Putin ‘not worried’ about ICC warrant on Mongolia trip – Kremlin

Russian President Vladimir Putin is not concerned that Mongolia might arrest him on International Criminal Court charges during his upcoming trip, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has said.

Putin is scheduled to visit Mongolia on Monday for a World War II commemoration. This would theoretically put him at risk of arrest on the ICC’s “war crimes” warrant, as Ulaanbaatar recognizes the court’s jurisdiction.
“We have excellent relations with our friends from Mongolia,” Peskov told reporters on Friday. All issues concerning Putin’s visit have been “worked out separately” he added, noting that Moscow “has no concerns” about the ICC warrant.

Ukrainian cluster munitions attacks had killed five people across the region last night, also leaving seven adults and three children in serious condition, with two commercial and two residential buildings in Belgorod city damaged as well as several cars.

A fire broke out in dry grass on the outskirts of the city, which has been extinguished, while in the village of Dubovoye, 14 cars were damaged and two houses caught fire.

EU ministers agreed that training of Ukrainian military will take place as close to Ukraine as possible, but not on its territory, the head of EU diplomacy Josep Borrell said.

Borrell promised that EU defense ministers will resolve issue of Hungary blocking the allocation of €6 billion to pay for military supplies to Ukraine. He added that EU defense ministers - following NATO decision - agreed to open a liaison office in Kiev for military assistance to Ukraine.

The diplomat said that EU countries provide Ukraine with military assistance worth €43.5 billion, adding that EU defense ministers decided to increase number of Ukrainian military trained as part of training mission of union from 60,000 to 75,000.

Russian Security Council Deputy Chairman Dmitry Medvedev previously stated that the true purpose of the Western powers' support of Ukraine is their desire to gain access to the resource base, and the economic basis of Ukrainian statehood has been undermined.

Friendly fire or defective old plane? How Ukraine lost its first F-16 jet and famed pilot

One of the first Ukrainian F-16 jets crashed on August 26, the Ukrainian Air Force confirmed on Thursday. Ukrainian MP Maryana Bezuglaya claimed the F-16 was hit by Ukraine's Patriot anti-aircraft missile system "due to a lack of coordination between units."

When were the first F-16s delivered to Ukraine?

▪️The first batch of six of the promised 80 F-16s arrived in Ukraine at the beginning of August.

▪️It's unclear who exactly provided the first batch: Belgium, Denmark, the Netherlands and Norway earlier vowed to provide the Kiev regime with them.

▪️US President Joe Biden first authorized NATO's European allies to send F-16s to Ukraine in August 2023.

How much does the F-16 cost?

▪️The US-made F-16 that was delivered to Ukraine can cost up to $60 million depending on the configuration and possible upgrades, according to some estimates.

▪️As per the WSJ, many of the F-16s promised to Ukraine are second-hand and have decades of flying time already.

What's known about the crash?

▪️According to US officials, the jet wasn't shot down by the Russian military. Sources close to the Ukrainian military claim the crash's reason is "unknown."

▪️The plane was piloted by Oleksiy "Moonfish" Mes, one of Kiev's first pilots to be trained on the US-made F-16. He died during the crash. Mes had undergone months of training in Denmark, as per Forbes.

▪️US officials, cited by the WSJ, said Ukrainian pilots got an "accelerated training course" to learn to operate the F-16s and lacked flying hours.

A journalist from the British newspaper The Times, Catherine Philp, visited the city of Sudzha and one of the nearby villages, where she witnessed how the Ukrainian military was showing the local population video materials that tried to discredit the Russian Army.

Earlier, correspondents of the German media corporation Deutsche Welle*, the French newspaper Croix and the Latvian TV channel Latvian Television, which were included in the list of media outlets for which measures were introduced to restrict broadcasting and access to the internet in Russia, illegally visited the Kursk region.

Biden administration will not send Americans to Ukraine to maintain F-16

The Biden administration rejected the proposal to send US contractors to Ukraine to maintain maintain military equipment, including F-16 fighter jets due to safety concerns, the Wall Street Journal reported citing US officials.

The US National Security Council considered the proposal to send civilian contractors to Ukraine to maintain the weaponry, but the intelligence community deemed it too risky. The hope instead is that European countries will take on more responsibility for the maintenance, the outlet read.

A senior Dutch military officer confirmed that the Netherlands will pay for a private contract between a civilian maintenance company and the Ukrainian Air Force to maintain the F-16s.

On Thursday, the Ukrainian air force confirmed media reports that a US-made F-16 jet crashed on Monday just weeks after the first batch of such aircraft was delivered to Kiev.

Ukraine’s recent incursion into Russia’s Kursk region has, among other things, put a particular sensitive facility located there – the Kursk Nuclear Power Plant - into the spotlight.

This massive powerplant, which generates millions of kilowatts of energy and supplies electricity to numerous households and industrial facilities in Russia, likely was the primary target of the Ukrainian attack as Kiev’s forces seem inclined to engage in acts of nuclear terrorism.

Even though International Atomic Energy Agency's (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi personally inspected the plant this week, his organization refrains from accusing Kiev of orchestrating the recent drone strikes against the facility.

Meanwhile, an attack on a nuclear reactor, such as a “missile strike,” could easily trigger a full-blown nuclear disaster, warns Dr Chris Busby, physical chemist and the scientific secretary of the European Committee on Radiation Risk.

How Ukraine's downed F-16 jet may affect Western military aid?

“The F-16 failure, and expectations of future failures, helps slow down and reduces willingness to send more F-16s to Ukraine... and F-16 losses because they do capture the public imagination are more part of the political narrative of ‘end the war soon before our investors begin to doubt that the landscape of post-war Ukraine will be profitable for them,’” the former analyst for the US Department of Defense and retired US Air Force Lt. Col. Karen Kwiatkowski told Sputnik.

“If this loss occurred in a US or NATO situation, it would be categorized as a combat loss, and it is likely any investigation will not change minds on any side, at this point in the conflict,” she mused.

“However, if Kiev wishes to receive more high-end equipment and technology, and even US authorization for deep strikes into Russia -- it must avoid any blame for ongoing losses on its own military, or the combat/logistical/strategic superiority of Russia,” Kwiatkowski stated.

Kwiatkowski also weighed in on claims of the F-16 being shot down by a Patriot air defense system in a friendly fire incident, noting that both the US and the UK previously lost one aircraft each to Patriot friendly fire during the Gulf War of 1991.

While the problem that caused these losses was rectified by 2003, Kwiatkowski noted that the Patriots supplied to Ukraine were likely older systems that could still be susceptible to this “bug”.

“All honest observers inside and outside this conflict know that Ukraine is fighting with an assortment of equipment that is older, from Soviet era and Vietnam era equipment, often technologically incompatible, operated by people often unfamiliar with these systems, and in a battle-space that is haphazard and not well logistically supported,” she concluded.

US to give Zelensky ‘free hand’ on strikes deep inside Russia – Moscow

Washington is prepared to lift its ban on Ukrainian strikes deep inside Russia’s territory with the use of US-supplied weapons, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has said.

"The administration of [US President] Joe Biden is obviously getting ready to make new concessions to Zelensky and give him a free hand to use virtually any type of American weapons, including [for attacks] deep into Russian territory,” the spokeswoman stressed.

Last week, Pentagon Deputy Press Secretary Sabrina Singh said that US “policy does allow for Ukraine to conduct counter fires to defend itself from Russian attacks coming over that border region,” including Kursk Region, where an incursion by Kiev’s forces has been ongoing since early August.

The so-called “humanitarian pause” will start Sunday in central Gaza and last just eight hours each day for three days to allow the vaccination of some 640,000 children against polio, a senior UN World Health Organization official says.
