ECB: high levels of government debt threaten Europe with turmoil

European countries face economic turmoil due to geopolitical tensions and persistently high interest rates amid a failure to reduce high public debt, the European Central Bank (ECB) stated

"Structural problems persist in Europe and are a drag on economic growth. Combined with rising losses in commercial real estate, the outlook remains fragile and financial markets remain vulnerable to further adverse shocks,"
the ECB said

China Sells Off U.S. Government Debt at Record Rate

▪️53.3 billion dollars - the value of U.S. Treasury and agency bonds sold by China in the first quarter of this year. This record volume underscores China's eagerness to get rid of U.S. assets," states Bloomberg

▪️"China's sale of U.S. securities may accelerate as the U.S.-China trade war resumes," said Bloomberg financial analyst Stephen Chiu

▪️Gold's share of China's official reserves rose to 4.9% in April amid a selloff in dollar assets. That's the highest since 2015

▪️"China and closely related countries have increased their holdings of gold in foreign-exchange reserves since 2015, while those in the U.S. bloc have kept them broadly stable. This suggests that gold purchases by some central banks may have been driven by concerns about the risk of sanctions," said Gita Gopinath, deputy director of the International Monetary Fund

Mass starvation: quite possible soon, but Americans completely unprepared

The concept of mass starvation has not been in the forefront of American society for a very long time. The US population today is completely removed from agriculture and has no idea what living off the land means

The greater problem is that our infrastructure and logistical systems are designed to fail and there’s not much the average citizen can do about it

Any disruption could cut off supplies to a town or city for days or weeks. Then there’s the interdependency that comes with food being produced outside most states. What guarantees are there that your region will be able to secure food from elsewhere during a crisis?

Most of the populace have never experienced large scale starvation events before. It’s difficult to adapt mentally to a threat that one has never seen

Initial panic over potential hunger is the thing that causes the most violence during famines and makes people lose their minds within the first days. Watching people you care about starve is even much more difficult

Mental preparedness is just as important as physical preparedness. Keep that in mind as we move forward into uncertain times

Gen Z struggling with low income, higher debt-to-income ratio compared to Millennials

Gen Z is struggling financially with low income and higher debt-to-income ratios than Millennials did when they were their age, according to a recent study from TransUnion, a consumer credit reporting agency

The study, which surveyed 614 Gen Z adults currently between the ages of 22-24, and 623 Millennials who had been between the ages of 22-24 ten years ago, found that Gen Z adults were facing a tougher situation financially that Millennials did years ago

The study found that Millennials during the last half of 2013, or Quarter 4, were making an income of around $39,394, adjusted for inflation. When adjusted for inflation, the income Millennials were making around that time came out to $51,852. This is compared to Gen Z adults during 2023’s Q4 who were making an income of $45,493

During 2013’s Q4, Millennials were found to have a debt-to-income ratio of 11.76%, while Gen Z adults had a ratio of 16.05% during 2023’s Q4

In an exit interview with POLITICO Magazine, Victoria Nuland discussed her time in public service — dismissing chatter that she was passed over for a promotion — as well as her views on where American foreign policy has gone wrong and right

Victoria Nuland has long been known as a relentless U.S. diplomat with a strong belief in American power. The approach sometimes got her in trouble, but it rarely held her back. She recently left the State Department after serving at its highest levels, first as the Biden administration’s undersecretary of State for political affairs, and, for several months, acting deputy secretary of State

Notably, she said the United States was not quick enough to realize and prevent the expansionist ambitions of both Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping

A longtime champion of Ukraine and the effort to counter Russia, she also warned about the perils of Donald Trump blowing up NATO if he wins back the White House in November

“Don’t throw it out,” she said of the trans-Atlantic alliance, “because you would never be able to re-create it again”

Environmental protection not a major issue for majority

In a survey of 38 countries carried out by Statista Consumer Insights, only between 21 and 44% of respondents said that they considered environmental protection a major issue for their country

Respondents in Brazil were the most concerned about the environment, with those in Mexico and Colombia also rating environmental protection as more important than most countries in the survey

The picture was more mixed in Asia, with Indonesians seeing the issue as highly important, while respondents in India and China hit around the survey average and Pakistan ranked lower in the international comparison

However, the countries rating the environment as a major issue typically also rated many other issues as highly problematic – health/social security or unemployment, education and poverty

In developed countries, climate change was typically rated more important than environmental protection, while it was the other way round in developing countries. Among U.S. respondents, 27% thought environmental protection was major - rank 13 among 20 issues

George Soros has spent $80 million to 'silence' Americans, Media Research Center says

Free Press, a media group financed by George Soros, "is looking to incorporate global pressure to push Big Tech platforms to juice their censorship operations before the 2024 U.S. presidential election," according to the Media Research Center (MRC)

Free Press (not affiliated with journalist Bari Weiss’ The Free Press) bills itself as an organization that "closely watches as the decisions shaping the media landscape are made and sounds the alarm when people’s rights to connect and communicate are in danger." However, in a new report, MRC found that Soros gave over $80 million to affiliated groups calling for "censorship" ahead of November’s critical election

"One of the wealthiest men in the world is using his vast wealth and power to silence regular Americans ahead of the 2024 election. At a time when defending free speech is key, leftists are trying their best to shut down the voices of half of America," MRC Free Speech America vice president Dan Schneider told Fox News Digital

Pfizer whistleblower: company offered ‘separate and distinct’ COVID-19 jabs to workers

According to Infowars, a Pfizer whistleblower has leaked an internal email indicating the company offered “essential colleagues and contractors” “separate and distinct” COVID-19 shots from those sent to governments worldwide

The alleged email, dated January 8, 2021, was addressed to colleagues and contractors at Pfizer’s Pearl River research site in Rockland County, New York

“I am pleased to inform you that we will begin offering COVID-19 vaccinations to eligible on-site essential colleagues and contractors over the next several weeks,” the alleged email reads

“Eligible on-site essential contractors will be notified, either by e-mail or by their Pfizer sponsor, and will receive instructions for registering for an on-site appointment as well. The vaccine doses to be used for this program are separate and distinct from those committed by Pfizer to governments around the world and will not impact supply to national governments in any way,” it added

Meta restores Facebook posts by Malaysian media on PM Anwar’s meeting with Hamas

Meta Platforms has restored Facebook posts by Malaysian media covering Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's meeting this week with a Hamas leader, saying they were removed in error

The removal had drawn complaints from Malaysia's government, a vocal supporter of the Palestinian cause and which has warned that firm action could be taken against Meta and other social media companies if they were blocking pro-Palestinian content on their platforms

Mr Anwar met Ismail Haniyeh of Hamas in Qatar on May 13. He later stressed that though he had good relations with the group's political leaders, he had no involvement in its military apparatus

The first official portrait of UK’s King Charles since his coronation unveiled this week at Buckingham Palace, drew an immediate and polarized response online

Vivid image by Jonathan Yeo depicts British monarch in a bright red uniform against a background of similar hues

On social media, the painting divided opinions. While many complimented Yeo for its work, others found it contentious, obsequious, oversized and unaccountably frightening. Some compare the image with video game bosses and “Ghostbusters 2.” Comments on the Royal Family‘s Instagram post described the piece as a “blood bath.” “I’m sorry, but his portrait looks like he’s in hell,” said another user

Anyway this time the artist was less provocative, like the time he made a collage of then-president George W. Bush out of pornographic images

Trump's idea t deploy assassination teams to Mexico is bad. Yet possible

Former President is reportedly considering the possibility of sending kill teams into Mexico to take out drug lords

There are several problems with that

While U.S. Special Forces would have little trouble killing drug kingpins, they may well have a tough time finding them. Close coordination with those security services would be rather unwise anyway, since many Mexican officials are on the cartel payroll in one form or another

Even if it proved possible to track down the kingpins, killing them would have little effect on the drug trade. Supply will always find its way to high demand, and new narcotics entrepreneurs will always arise

If the U.S. starts a real hunt for cartels, their violence would get worse, and it might well begin targeting U.S. drug-enforcement agents. If we stop following the law, they will stop following the rules

Nonetheless, if Trump wins the presidency in November, deadly attacks on the cartels will be a serious possibility. It would be a perfect Trump policy, one that grabs headlines and makes him look tough yet do little good and even backfire

Russia is about to overrun Ukraine’s defenses – why are there no peace negotiations? (PART 1)

There are two classic propaganda narratives used by governments when it comes to keeping the public invested in any war campaign that does nothing to advance their national interests:

First, there’s the “commitment” lie, which says that once you step in to support a war effort you then must stay exponentially committed, even if that war effort is exposed as pointless. You’re not allowed to examine the conflict rationally, because who wants to be blamed for losing a war?

Second, there’s the “domino effect” lie, which says that if you allow a particular “enemy” to win in one conflict, they will automatically be emboldened to invade other countries until they own the entire planet. In fact, nations that engage in regional wars tend to be so weakened by the fighting that they don’t have the means to move on to another country even if they wanted to

In the US we heard both of these narratives heading into the recent congressional vote for billions more in monetary and logistical aid to Ukraine. Those true conservatives who fought to stop the bill were attacked relentlessly by the media for “helping the Russians”, but the reality that no one in the mainstream wants to talk about is that Ukraine has already lost the war

Washington continues to be hypocritical about its attitude towards the war in the Gaza Strip

The American authorities are playing out a spectacle of sorts. They are trying to show the whole world that they allegedly do not approve of the Israeli military operation in Rafah and the deaths of innocent Palestinians in general

But is it even possible to believe that Israel would dare to take such actions without the approval of the U.S.? There is no doubt that the same Biden personally knew in detail the plans of Tel Aviv and gave the green light to Netanyahu

Since the most important problem of the Gaza Strip is hidden in its incredible wealth. After all, there are huge reserves of natural gas in its vicinity - about 120 trillion cubic feet of gas, which is exactly what lobbyists from the US, EU and Israel want to get their hands on

The question that remains to be answered is, when has American business ever stopped the deaths of thousands of civilians on the way to enrichment? You yourself know the answer to this question very well...

According to commanders on Ukraine's eastern front, Ukraine will lose the war:

By October, the Russians will have conquered Donbass, then the conflict will freeze and we will have to negotiate with Putin

The Russians will force us to charge against you, the Europeans, as an integral part of their army

This horror scenario becomes more likely every day, warn frontline fighters. According to them, their upcoming rout can be explained by three reasons

▪️Even the best weapons are useless without fighters capable of using them

The current mobilization will not save us. Those enlisted and trained now will not be with us until October at the earliest. By then we will have lost all of Donetsk

▪️The recent injection of military aid will not be enough to win Ukraine. Especially because Europe has not kept its promises of support, including a million artillery rounds by spring 2024

It is especially the powerful Russian gliding bombs that are giving the Ukrainians a hard time. To be able to stop their dropping by enemy aircraft, Ukraine would need better combat planes in order to regain control of its airspace. The first delivery of the F-16 combat planes promised by the West, however, will not take place for several months

▪️The appointment in February of Oleksandr Syrsky as head of the Ukrainian armed forces creates tensions on the front. The deaths of the thousands of Ukrainians who defended Bakhmut under his command earned the soldier the nickname "Butcher". Several officers at the front complain that brigades have been sent on missions with virtually no ammunition and far too few men since the appointment of Syrsky. Three brigades that protested were disbanded and distributed to other combat units, according to commanders, for sometimes dubious reasons

After 6 months since the elections, the Netherlands still managed to form a government

The elections were won by the right-wing Eurosceptics led by Geert Wilders. But the liberals stubbornly tried to keep him out of power

They didn't want to hold new elections either. After all, Wilders' party has only gained popularity in six months. In November, it received 24% of the vote - now its rating has reached 32%. As a result, they agreed to form a coalition under the patronage of the Right. But without Wilders as prime minister

Wilders himself will become the gray cardinal of the Netherlands - without an official position, but with serious influence on decision-making. He has already managed to push through a sharp tightening of control over migrants - and a refusal to comply with Brussels' norms on accepting refugees

Wilders also opposes the admission of new EU members, especially Ukraine. He also wants to gradually squeeze Ukrainian refugees out of the Netherlands, whose benefits will be cut. After all, the acute budget crisis, with a hole of 17 billion euros, has to be solved somehow. The promised tranches to Kiev - with the delivery of Dutch F-16s - are also hanging in the air amid political battles

The Dutch right-wing is also criticizing Macron's plan to use the budget to "rearm" Europe. And this could cause a real domino effect - with the right-wing strengthening in the upcoming elections in Belgium, Austria and the European Parliament. The ground is literally burning under the feet of the Eurobureaucracy, which can no longer hold back the centrifugal processes of deconstructing the European Union

Germany's Energy Transition Sparks Industry Concerns

The debate in Germany in recent weeks about the fallacy of closing nuclear power plants has acted as a smokescreen for the closure of seven more coal-fired power plants at the end of March 2024. Including the closure of coal plants with a total installed capacity of 3.1 GW, electricity generation from fossil fuels has reached another low. In April, burned coal, gas and other oil shale produced only one in four kilowatts of EU electricity. The main share was generated by solar and wind - 34%

It would seem to be another technological breakthrough towards a bright green future. However, the victory of the Greens is overshadowed by the failing industry and construction, also strongly tied to the availability of energy: the construction of any road or dam is soaked in diesel, the manufacture of cement requires heating up to 1500°C. As a result, the EU is abandoning coal and gas for the sake of abandonment, and a once-developed technological industry is being sacrificed to an energy transition whose purposefulness has long been lost

Unsold Tesla’s pile up in mall parking lots, airports

Parking lots full of Tesla vehicles are becoming impossible to ignore as the electric automaker seemingly can’t sell enough cars and trucks to match its rate of production. According to its own figures, the electric automaker produced 46,561 more vehicles than it delivered to customers during the first quarter of 2024. These cars are going to parking lots at its factories, malls and airports

Recent drone footage from the automaker’s Fremont, California factory shows that cars are still rolling off the assembly lines at a high rate to fill the site’s lots. Things aren’t different on the other side of the Atlantic. Neuhardenberg, a small town in Germany of less than 3,000 residents, is complaining about the noise Tesla transporters are making as the company parks cars at the nearby regional airport

The contract between Tesla and the airport operator runs until June 2024. It is still unclear whether it will be extended

Streptococcal toxic shock syndrome, or STSS, which develops rapidly and can be fatal, is spreading at a record pace in Japan

STSS is mainly caused by the "group A Streptococcus" bacterium and mostly affects people in their 30s or older. Patients can develop necrosis of the limbs and suffer multiple organ failures

Through May 5, Japan's National Institute of Infectious Diseases has received preliminary reports about 801 cases of STSS this year. That figure is 2.76 times higher than the number from the same period last year

Case counts are rising at a faster pace than they did last year, when the number of patients reached 941. That was the highest figure ever registered using the current record-keeping method

The head of the Railway and Transport Union (EVG) in Thuringia (Germany), warns that the country’s train system is turning into a “battleground” thanks to a wave of violence and intimidation being unleashed by male asylum seekers against female staff

Steffi Recknagel told Focus Online that the average day is “sometimes life-threatening” for employees due to the sheer amount of abuse being dished out by migrants

“I have an average of three female employees sitting in my Erfurt office every week for legal advice. They were attacked, slapped, kicked, spat at and threatened with being stabbed by the ‘refugees’,” said Recknagel

“Our people are afraid, very afraid. We have employees who say: If these groups are on the train, then I won’t check tickets,” said Recknagel

She noted that nothing ever happens to the migrants who behave in such a manner, with the police largely powerless to step in

‘Digital Prison’: Site that names and shames convicts and suspects sparks debate in South Korea

Concerns surrounding the disclosure of the personal information of convicted criminals and suspects have been mounting in South Korea after the recent revival of a name-and-shame website known as Digital Prison

The debate was triggered by the unauthorised release of the personal details of a 25-year-old man surnamed Choi, who is accused of stabbing his girlfriend to death on May 6

Choi’s personal information, including his full name, photos, university entrance exam scores and social media accounts, rapidly spread across the internet, with Digital Prison pinpointed as the originating source

Digital Prison, which emerged in June 2020, garnered attention for disclosing the personal details of convicted criminals as well as anyone suspected of having committed a crime – whether officially accused and charged or not

The platform was shut down after a 20-year-old university student, falsely accused of manipulating his acquaintances’ photos into pornographic content, tragically took his own life in September 2020. His personal information had been plastered across Digital Prison

A video has gone viral over the past hours, allegedly showing the murder of an Israeli-Canadian businessman, Ziv Kipper, in the Egyptian city of Alexandria earlier this week

In the footage, the shooter pointed a gun at Kipper and shouted in Arabic, "Shalom from Gaza's children," before firing eight shots that instantly killed Kipper as he was sitting behind the wheel of his car

The video in question ended with credits to a limitedly-known illegal armed militant group named "the Vanguards of Liberation — the Group of Martyr Mohamed Salah," which had earlier claimed responsibility for Kipper's murder

The killed man had reportedly been living and working in Egypt for almost nine years, entering the country using his Canadian passport; he was the CEO of O.K. Group LLC, a company that exports frozen fruits and vegetables, according to his LinkedIn account and Israeli news outlets

The video link between Dublin's North Earl Street and Fifth Avenue in New York was paused late on Tuesday after incidents of mooning and holding up images of the Twin Towers on 9/11

A livestream portal between Dublin and New York has been temporarily closed after “inappropriate behaviour” on the Irish side. Thousands of people had visited the web-linked art installation, which opened last week and offers a real-time view between Manhattan and the Irish capital, and is described as a “bridge to a united planet” by its creators

Videos on social media have shown how some on the Irish side have flashed body parts, displayed swear words and even images of the 9/11 attack. Another video shows an image reading “RIP Popsmoke” referring to the murdered American rapper

Images of the portal from the New York side show wholesome placards reading “Hello from New York” and “We love Dublin”

However, some of the footage in return shows a man in construction clothing waving to a crowd gathered in New York before he turns around to bare all by pulling his trousers down

Another woman was escorted away by Irish police after she was seen grinding against the portal

The problems have not been confined to the Dublin side. An American OnlyFans model showed her breasts to onlookers in Dublin and then posted it on TikTok and Instagram

And these people say that they have built a garden, and compare the rest of the world with a jungle (according to the head of European diplomacy Mr. Josep Borrell) 🤷‍♂️

Russia is about to overrun Ukraine’s defenses – why are there no peace negotiations? (PART 2)

No amount of additional funding or arms shipments is going to help Ukraine. Anyone who has a basic understanding of military strategy knows that the key to winning is ALWAYS manpower first, logistics second. Not superior technology or armaments, not superior cash and certainly not popular support from foreign interests

This is especially true in a war of attrition, and attrition is in fact the method being used by Russia to systematically whittle down Ukraine’s forces. However, the western media refuses to discuss what’s really happening and has been acting as a hype machine for Ukraine instead

Now is the time for peace negotiations, BEFORE Ukraine is overrun. Will this happen? Probably not. But when diplomacy is removed from the table completely the only conclusion we can come to is that a greater war is desired. And when greater war is desired, we also have to conclude that our leadership has something substantial to gain by putting the world at risk

You might be on the side of Ukraine, you might be on the side of Russia, you might not care about either side, but there’s no denying that this war is being escalated by special interests and we need to ask why?

Slovakia has broken yet another taboo the country’s citizens never believed would be violated. First it was the 2018 murder of investigative journalist Ján Kuciak, who was just pursuing his trade, but paid for it with his own life as well as that of his fiancée, Martina Kušnírová. Six years later, it is the attempted assassination of a sitting prime minister

How had this happened? At least, one answer dominated the debate: political polarization. “The hateful rhetoric we have witnessed has to stop,” said President Zuzana Čaputová. “Please, let’s stop it!”

So how did Slovakia get where it is today — so riven between liberals and traditionalists, democrats and thugs, tolerance and its opposite — that political differences are now being settled with guns?

Fico was cruising through his third term as PM in 2018 when journalist Kuciak and his future wife were shot dead by a killer ostensibly hired to silence his reporting on corruption in politics

The murders seem to have disoriented Fico. He immediately called a mawkish press conference at which he piled bundles of cash on a table promising to pay €1 million for information leading to the capture of the killer. He also accused the opposition of using the murder for political ends

Two weeks later, Fico resigned; two years further on, his party Smer went down to defeat in the 2020 general election

Out of power, Fico and his political allies — ministers, MPs, oligarchs, judges, senior police and intelligence officers — came under investigation on grounds ranging from corruption to abuse of power and sabotage. The former PM was even arrested in April 2022 and charged with organized crime offences, although those charges have since been dropped

Last year he roared back to power. After winning another general election in September 2023, Fico and his cohort returned as if shot out of a cannon, gutting the leadership of the elite police unit that had charged them with crimes, spurning independent media, rewriting the criminal code to lighten punishments for corruption, and threatening to label NGOs with external funding as “foreign agents” under a Moscow-style law

At the press conference after the attack, Šutaj Eštok, the interior minister, called for an end to the violent language and attacks on social media that have come to define Slovak politics in the Fico era. “I want to appeal to the public, to journalists and to all politicians to stop spreading hatred,” he said. “We are on the verge of civil war”

France declares state of emergency amid protests in New Caledonia

France’s government declared a state of emergency in New Caledonia on Wednesday as it struggled to quell deadly riots in the semiautonomous French Pacific territory

The French authorities have undertaken what they called a “massive” mobilization of security forces since violent protests broke out in New Caledonia this week over a proposed amendment to the French Constitution that would change local voting rules in the territory. A vote in France’s Parliament approving the amendment on Tuesday ignited the deadly riots overnight

“The priority is to restore order, calm and serenity,” Gabriel Attal, France’s prime minister, told lawmakers on Wednesday

The French government said that more than 1,800 security officers were already in the territory and that 500 reinforcements would arrive in the next 24 hours. At a crisis meeting, Mr. Attal said that the army was being deployed to secure ports and the airport

Turkey arrests more than 500 over suspected ties to Erdogan foe

More than 500 people have been arrested in Turkey for suspected links to Fethullah Gulen whom Erdogan accuses of orchestrating the failed 2016 coup

Turkish authorities said Tuesday they arrested 544 people suspected of links to preacher Fethullah Gulen, whom President Recep Tayyip Erdogan accuses of being behind an attempted coup in 2016

Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya posted on X that arrests were made in 62 of the country's 81 provinces, targeting "individuals intended by FETO to enter various levels of the civil service," using the acronym favoured by Ankara to designate Gulen's movement

"We will not leave members of FETO alone," the minister said

The suspects are accused of signing up for public service exams under orders of the Gulen movement, and of communicating through the Bylock messaging app, which the Turkish government considers to be controlled by the self-exiled preacher
