IELTS Speaking cue card

Describe a place that you would like to travel to.

You should say:

where you would like to go
how you would go there
who you would go with
and explain why you would like to go to this place.

Sample answer

I’m going to tell you about why I’d like to visit New Orleans – that’s my dream holiday destination. I’ve travelled quite a lot and visited many countries but I’ve never been to the States and I really do want to go there one day.

I’m not quite sure how I would go there. I guess I’d have to fly but it’s also possible I suppose that I might do a grand tour of the US. Fly into one of the major cities like LA or New York and cross the country on the Greyhound buses and see something of the interior. I’ve always thought that travelling by coach is a more interesting way to travel as you get to see so much more and don’t spend all your time in city centres and airports. I guess that’s particularly true in the States with their great Highway system – route 66 and all that. Why New Orleans? Well, I’m a huge fan of jazz and that’s where it all started and I’d love to visit some of the old bars where the greats used to play. I also understand that it’s a really lively place with a very active street culture and those are the sorts of places I like to go. The only downside I suppose is that it was devastated of course by Hurricane Katrina and I know it’s still suffering. I’d probably choose to travel by myself. I’m a very bad tourist and don’t enjoy being in groups at all. I much prefer to do my own thing and get off the beaten track and just wander around getting the feel for the place I’m in. I do enjoy museums and so forth but I think that you can learn as much by sitting in a cafe watching the world go by. It’s easier to do that on your own I think.

California advises against keeping your phone in your pocket. Whether or not anyone accepts the advice is another matter.

The jury is still out on whether or not cellphone radiation is bad for you, but California's Department of Public Health isn't taking any chances. The agency just issued an advisory that suggests residents should take steps to limit their exposure to cellphones. The notice recommends avoiding phone use when unnecessary, particularly when the cell signal is likely to kick into overdrive (such as when you're in a weak coverage area or streaming video). It also advises keeping your handset away from your body -- CDPH Director Dr. Karen Smith even suggests "not keeping your phone in your pocket."

A hugely popular Reddit thread reveals the words non-native (and sometimes even native) English-speakers struggle to say

“Worcestershire”. “Choir”. “Sixth”. For some, these words may seem relatively normal and everyday – but to others, they represent an unrivalled linguistic challenge.

For almost two weeks, users of the online social platform reddit have been submitting what they consider to be “the hardest English word to pronounce”.

After more than 5,000 submissions, the message thread has become a fount of difficult vocabulary, with users from across the world sharing their favourites and personal experiences.

نظرات بابک در خصوص آزمون امروز 6 ژانویه 2018

اول که سطح هردو نزدیک به آزمون های کتاب ۱۱ و ۱۲ کمبریج بود. به نظرم reading پارت سخت تر امتحان بود. مخصوصا passage 3 .

پارت اول listening چیز خاصی نداشت. یک دختر می خواست توی یک course شرکت کنه. داشت سابقه خوشو می گفت. تاریخ داشت.postal code هم داشت. پارت بعدی تکمیل جدول بود‌. که نیاز به زمان و مکان اشاره شده داشت.

توی section 2 مسئول یک travel agency در حال توضیح شرایط برای new recruiters بود. با چند گزینه ای کوتاه شروع می شد. تکمیل جدول و ادامه ۳تا جای خالی‌.

سخت ترین پارت section 3 بود. ۵ تا چند گزینه ای طولانی و ۵ تا هم matching بود. موضوع هم بین ۲ نفر که می خواستن با هم lecture بدن بود.
در آخر section که کلا جای خالی بود. راجع به تاریخچه کیف صحبت کرد. نسبتا آسون بود.

توی reading من ۵ مین اضافه آوردم. ۲تای اول که آسون بود رو توی ۳۰ مین زدم. ۲۵ مین هم سومی.
موضوع اولی magnetic therapy بود. تاریخچه و یک case study و arguement که وجود داره.
اولین سوال matching headings بود. ۲تا پارت mentioned detail بود و فکر کنم با یک چند گزینه ای واسه جمع بندی کل.

موضوع دومی people-centered management بود. ۲تا نمونه هم اورده بود.
۲ پارت سوالات هم باید می گفتیم این info کجا بوده یا چه شخصی گفته. پارت ۳ هم جا خالی از مثال دوم بود.

آخرین موضوع راجع به بحث ریسک و سود تکنولوژی جدید بود. من خوب نزدم. True false سخت بود.
پارت بعدی هم جای خالی بود و در آخر یک چند گزینه ای جمع بندی.

Ideas – don’t try and show off too much

A reason why fluency may suffer is that you pause a lot to try and find good ideas to show off and impress the examiner. This is just to misunderstand the IELTS process – it’s a test of language and not ideas – all the examiner is listening for is how well you can use the language – not how much you know.

Ex-mobile phone industry executive gets five years for text message scam


A former mobile phone industry executive was sentenced to five years in prison on Friday after he was found guilty of defrauding cellphone customers by charging them millions of dollars for unwanted text messages.

Fraser Thompson, 36, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Katherine Forrest in Manhattan, prosecutors announced. A lawyer for Thompson, a former senior vice president at text message marketing company Mobile Messenger, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Speaking test

Speaking too fast (also known as a 'rapid speech rate') can certainly affect your score. If you speak too fast you could make it hard for the examiner to hear the pronunciation features of English (stress, rhythm and intonation) and you can actually make words difficult to understand, especially words with long vowel sounds.

Remember, the speaking test is not a race, and there is really no benefit by speaking too fast.

HOW TO THINK OF IDEAS FOR IELTS WRITING TASK 2

One of the biggest fears students have is opening up the writing paper, looking at task 2 and having no ideas. Idea generation in IELTS writing task 2 is something students worry a lot about, but it doesn’t have to be that way.

The reason for this fear is natural, but there are easy solutions.

Fortunately, most questions will be on familiar topics that most people have an opinion on, such as health, education and the environment. Remember this is a language test not a general knowledge test.

Do my ideas have to be entertaining?

Many students also worry that their ideas are not interesting enough or they are too boring. The examiner is not looking for you to entertain her. They are looking for you to demonstrate an ability to write an essay in English supported by evidence and relevant examples. There are no extra points for interesting ideas. What the ideas must be is relevant to the question being asked.

You can have the most boring ideas in the world and still get a band score 9, as long as your ideas are relevant.

This may seem illogical to some people who have already been to university and know that your ideas should be both relevant and interesting. Stop thinking about how you write at university level, this is an IELTS exam, not a university essay. Give the IELTS examiners what they want and nothing else.

Did you know: reading news headlines is a good way to learn the English language. News headlines help you understand what is going on around you.

Headlines are short and easy to understand. They are often accompanied by a picture that tells you more about the story.
Take a look at the headline of this article:

Learn English: Climate in the news.

If you are not sure about the meaning of the word ‘climate’ you can look at the picture and guess that it is about the Earth and the weather.

You can browse news websites and read headlines on your mobile phone while you are travelling to and from work or school. Once you feel that you are able to understand the headlines, you can start reading the articles and building your vocabulary.

Crime scene drones

Few would argue with the fact that understanding the crime scene is key to solving any offence. This usually requires a crime scene investigator to take extensive photographs, which can be a lengthy process that risks contamination and even the destruction of evidence. By sending in a drone, however, the entire scene can be photographed without disturbance in just 15 minutes. These images can then be used to build up a three-dimensional model of the scene, which can be examined back at police headquarters immediately and even submitted in court as evidence. High-resolution photography of fingerprints can be quickly uploaded to databases and compared with police records. This could potentially identify a criminal
without officers having to step foot onto the scene.
