IELTS Grammar

Comparing with ‘as … as’

You’ll have lots of opportunities to compare and contrast things in your IELTS Speaking exam: perhaps describing the differences between family members or comparing one place with another. And there are many different ways of making comparisons in English. In this lesson we’ll look at using ‘as … as’.

Uses
a) We use ‘as … as’ with an adverb or an adjective to make an equal or unequal comparison:

❇️ Living in the UK has been as enjoyable as I’d expected.
❇️ My brother and I both play the piano, but I don’t play as well as he does.

b) You often find ‘as … as’ used with ‘much’ or ‘many’ (sometimes with a noun) to express amounts or quantities:

❇️ Since I’ve started to work part-time I’m not earning as much (money) as I used to.
❇️ I like my language school because classes don’t have as many students as in other places I’ve studied.

c) You can modify ‘as … as’ with adverbs like ‘almost’, ‘nearly’, ‘not quite’ and ‘nowhere near’.
If the difference between the two items is only slight, we can use ‘almost’, ‘nearly’ or ‘not quite’.

❇️ Speaking online on Skype is almost as good as being face-to-face with the person.
❇️ I thought things would be cheaper in this country, but they are nearly as expensive as where I come from.
❇️ My exam results were not quite as good as I was hoping for.

To emphasize the difference between two things you can use ‘not nearly’ or ‘nowhere near’ with ‘as … as’.

❇️ I’ve seen the film, but it was not nearly as good as the book.
❇️ Winter in Australia is nowhere near as cold as where I come from.

Sitting in the terminal building waiting to be called for our flight is a regular occurrence for most of us — but what's really going on out there on the ramp while we're inside staring at our phones?

The jet that will carry you to your destination has likely just arrived from somewhere else. When it lands, it'll undergo a turnaround, changing from an arriving to a departing flight.
There are vehicles and people on the ramp, ready to get your flight back in the air quickly — after all, a plane doesn't make money sitting on the ground.

What type of leisure activities are popular in your country?

Answer:

Well, the leisure and recreational activities in my country greatly vary based on the age group, economic and employment status, gender and location of people. However, watching TV, surfing the internet, walking in the park, reading daily newspapers and participating in sports like cricket and football are some very common pasttime activities of the people in my country.

To be more specific, teenagers and young people mostly like to watch TV programmes, use the internet and social networking sites like Facebook, play online games, sometimes collect stamps, and play outdoor games and sports, while adults watch TV, walk in the park and read newspapers. The choice of hobbies and leisure activities are quite different among the city-dwellers and villagers. For instance, a teenage boy in a city would mostly play a video game or chat with friends online in his free time, a teenager in a rural area, on the contrary, would be busy fishing or playing outdoor games.

Why it is important for people to have leisure activities?

Answer:

I believe that leisure activities are quite important for us as these activities often define who we are, what we like and how we chose to spend our time. Furthermore, these activities refresh our mind, motivate us and help us reinvent ourselves. For instance, one of my cousins started taking painting classes as his hobby a few years back. Initially, it was a simple past time activity he was passionate about. Later on, he found that he had a great potential in painting and now he is a full-time artist. This is a real life example of how a simple leisure activity can help us re-explore our hidden talent and passion.

Human, physically and psychologically, is not prepared to stay idle all day long. They need a perfect schedule for working, relaxing, and enjoying their free time. Thus, leisure activities help us enjoy our time, get refreshed, relax, and get recharged for working more. Interestingly, people who work very hard need more enjoyable free time activities. Otherwise, they will suffer from fatigue and get distracted soon.

Describe something electronic that you couldn’t live without.

You should say:
– what it is
– what functions it has

– how you got it
and explain why it is so vital.

Sample answer:

I would like to tell you about my iPad which is an electronic device I absolutely couldn’t live without. First of all, I’m sure you are familiar with an iPad. It’s an Apple product. This one is a couple of generations old but still works fine.

It was expensive when I bought it, roughly 500 bucks. I’ve had it for over 3 years and I truly couldn’t live without it. I use it for almost everything. For example, I surf the internet with it. It logs on quickly and because of all the APP functions you can access everything with just a simple click, like youtube or gmail.
Besides surfing the net, I can also check out Youtube videos and really learn a bunch of studs from the tutorials. Sure a lot of people play games with it but gaming isn’t my cup of tea.
I use it more for organizational stuff when it comes to work. For instance, I keep my contact list for clients on my iPad. Plus, I really keep my schedule updated in the calendar app for all my meetings and deadlines I must watch out for.

I especially use my iPad for taking pics and videos. I know it's a bit strange to use an iPad as a camera but it works wonders for me and I’m just used to it even though I feel it can be weird.

I bought it a couple years ago at the official Apple Store. When I first purchased it I had no idea of its features.

Do my ideas have to be entertaining?

Many students worry that their ideas are not interesting enough or they are too boring. The examiner is not looking for you to entertain her. They are looking for you to demonstrate an ability to write an essay in English supported by evidence and relevant examples. There are no extra points for interesting ideas. What the ideas must be is relevant to the question being asked.

You can have the most boring ideas in the world and still get a band score 9, as long as your ideas are relevant. This may seem illogical to some people who have already been to university and know that your ideas should be both relevant and interesting. Stop thinking about how you write at university level, this is an IELTS exam, not a university essay. Give the IELTS examiners what they want and nothing else.

Snapshot facial Reconstruction

Various methods for facial reconstruction have existed for decades, but none are as impressive as Snapshot DNA phenotyping. This technique can be used in the absence of photographic or video evidence, and can create a prediction of what a suspect’s face looks like just using a sample of their DNA. It determines skin, hair and eye colour, as well as face shape and detailed biogeopraphic ancestry.

When the police have nothing else to go on this information is invaluable, and can quickly narrow down a list of suspects. Hopefully, as our understanding of DNA improves it will be possible to pick out further characteristics, which will allow even more detailed facial reconstructions to be created.

IELTS Speaking question

“What type of weather do you enjoy most?”

It’s hard to say because I like all seasons but I would say summer would have to be my all-time favorite. You know, the summer is just great. There are so many things to do outside, you can be near the water, yes…if it’s too hot, it’s better to hang out at the beach. I really love the beach and watersports like surfing. So, yeah, if I had to choose one, it would be summer for sure.

Many IELTS students worry too much about using high level vocabulary for the speaking test. However, you are not expected to use academic vocabulary for this part of the test. You should only use vocabulary that you are very comfortable with. Do not try practicing new vocabulary during your IELTS test.

Overthinking about vocabulary causes a lot of students to make mistakes, feel stressed out, and to say "uhhh" and "ummm" too much.

What you should focus on is avoiding common words and phrases, such as:

I like
I think
For example

Although it's OK to sometimes use these words/phrases, you should use a bit of variety when you're speaking so that you won't sound like a boring robot.

Writing, Task 2

The tendency for human beings to copy others can be shown in the poplarity of fashion in clothes and other consumer goods.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Many individuals hold the view that humans tend to replicate each other through fashionable clothes they put on and commodities that they harness. In my opinion, I completely agree with this perspective.

It is true that more and more ordinary people have been pursuing the same clothing styles which are considered as the most popular ones. The prime example of this tendency could be observed in most social events in Vietnam, where celebrities are inclined to dress up trendy and elagant outfits, which are advertised by globally influential fashion icons or from fashion shows like Paris fashion week. Putting on these luxurious clothes could make them more confident, showing their socioeconomic status. Another example could be seen in daily life. Most inhabitants, particularly the younger generation, often go for the garments that are novel and popular. Some even copy the style of their idols such as Son Tung MTP, one of the most renowned singers in Vietnam, whose fashion style is regarded as freshed and elagant.

@ieltsriasati

Besides copying other's clothing styles, people in the present days also emulate each other via consumer goods. It is the case that prior to coming to a certain grocery or electrical store to purchase their necessary items, consumers tend to ask others for advice whether these products are well-made and they would pick out these if their advisers agree. This trend could be seen in all kinds of products, ranging from food items to electronic gadgets. To illustrate, buyers would head for an iPhone if some of their friends are using it and hailing it as an excellant smartphone.

In conclusion, I strongly advocate that people nowadays are replicating each other, especially in terms of trendy clothes and commodities.

Speaking Cue Card:

Describe an item of technology you have that is very important.

You should say:

what the technology is
when you got it
how often you use it

and say how different your daily life would be without it.

Sample answer:

I don’t have many gadgets … just a computer … a laptop and my mobile phone, but I’ll talk about my computer as it’s so useful … it’s funny really. Years ago I was still learning to use computers, how to use email, send attachments and how to access websites. Then I decided to do a digital editing course for video and photography and so I bought this laptop when I started the course. My husband had a desktop PC, but it was very slow so I decided to upgrade to a powerful one because we do a lot of video editing on the course. It’s a high-spec laptop … very fast, with the latest operating system, it boots up really quickly and it’s fun to use so it makes working a pleasure. I’ve become a competent computer user now … if I didn’t have it, I daresay I’d have to spend more time at college using their computers … but on the positive side I suppose I’d read a lot more if I didn’t have it. I probably waste a lot of time surfing the web.

Some and any

Some and any are extremely useful and frequent words in English, but they are also the source of many learner errors. This post looks at how to use them correctly.

The first thing to remember is that we only use some and any directly before either a plural noun or an uncountable noun:

✅We bought some clothes.

✅Do you have any milk?

Do not use some or any with a singular countable noun:

✅Would you like some piece of cake?
