Microplastics have been found in ultra-processed foods, like packaged snacks and bottled drinks.

They can get into food from plastic packaging and machines used during production.

Microplastics are found throughout the human body, including the brain.

Even in semen and other reproductive-related samples plastic can be found.

Scientists are still studying how microplastics enter the body, such as through food, water, and air.

Cold weather and frost make many vegetables sweeter by increasing their sugar.

Collards survive down to -9°C (15°F), beets down to -7°C (20°F), and both grow well if planted in late summer.

Frost may damage some leaves but helps roots taste better.

Cover plants with row covers if it gets colder than -7°C (20°F) to protect them.

The medieval Cistercian numerals, or "ciphers" in nineteenth-century parlance, were developed by the Cistercian monastic order in the early thirteenth century at about the time that Arabic numerals were introduced to northwestern Europe. They are more compact than Arabic or Roman numerals, with a single glyph able to indicate any integer from 1 to 9,999.

English, Hindi, Persian, Russian, and Spanish may sound very different, but they belong to the same broad language family: Indo-European.
Linguists believe these languages descended from a common ancestral language spoken thousands of years ago, often called Proto-Indo-European. Although no written records of this language have been discovered, researchers reconstruct parts of it by comparing vocabulary, grammar, and sound patterns across its descendants.
For example, English mother, Latin mater, and Sanskrit mātṛ share a historical linguistic connection. Over centuries, migration, geographical separation, and sound changes transformed related words into forms that can seem unrelated today. 🌍📜

The immortal jellyfish can reverse its life cycle, returning from its adult stage to an earlier developmental stage when stressed or injured.
Known scientifically as Turritopsis dohrnii, this tiny marine animal transforms its mature cells and reorganizes its body into a juvenile polyp. Under suitable conditions, the cycle can begin again, potentially allowing it to avoid death from old age.
However, it can still die from disease, predators, or other environmental threats. 🪼🔄

In 1986, British police used DNA profiling for the first time in a criminal investigation to help solve two murders.

Geneticist Alec Jeffreys developed the technique, which compares patterns in DNA to help distinguish individuals.

In the case, DNA evidence cleared an initial suspect and later helped identify Colin Pitchfork, who was convicted of the murders of two teenage girls:
Lynda Mann and Dawn Ashworth, in Leicestershire, England.

In the traditional courtship customs of the Wodaabe people of Niger and neighboring parts of the Sahel,
men take part in a festival called Gerewol, where elaborate appearance and dance play a role in attracting partners.

Men apply facial makeup, emphasize their eyes and teeth, and perform synchronized dances while women observe.

The festival is associated with courtship and social gatherings, although its meaning and practices vary across communities.

The striking makeup and expressive facial displays make Gerewol one of the more distinctive courtship traditions documented in West Africa. 🎭🌍

In 1859, the United States and Britain nearly went to war over a pig.

On June 15, an American farmer named Lyman Cutlar shot a pig belonging to the British-owned Hudson’s Bay Company after finding it eating potatoes on his land in the San Juan Islands.

The dispute escalated when British authorities threatened to arrest him, prompting American troops to arrive.

Both sides eventually sent military forces to the islands, but no soldiers were killed.

The only reported death in the original dispute was the pig.

The islands were finally awarded to the United States in 1872 through arbitration by German Emperor Wilhelm I.

In ancient Egypt, people believed that the heart held a person's memories, emotions, and moral character.

During the funerary ritual known as the Weighing of the Heart, the deceased's heart was weighed against the feather of Ma'at, the goddess associated with truth and justice.

According to Egyptian mythology, a balanced heart allowed the deceased to enter the afterlife.

An unbalanced heart could be devoured by Ammit, a creature with the head of a crocodile, the front of a lion, and the hindquarters of a hippopotamus.

Nightingale floors were used long ago in temples and palaces like Nijō Castle in Kyoto, Japan.

They made a squeaking sound when stepped on because nails rubbed against clamps under the floor.

This helped protect the buildings by warning people of intruders.

Unless you count old squeaky stairs, we don't use this security system anymore.

Franz Kafka, the author of The Metamorphosis, struggled to balance writing with his full-time job at an insurance company.

He often wrote late at night, sometimes working until the early hours of the morning.

In his diaries and letters, Kafka frequently expressed frustration with his writing and doubts about his literary work.

Before his death in 1924, he asked his friend Max Brod to destroy his unpublished manuscripts.

Brod refused, and several of Kafka's most famous works were published posthumously. 📚

During World War II, Poland's resistance operated an extensive underground press network under Nazi occupation.

Secret newspapers reported battlefield developments, exposed occupation policies, and circulated information that authorities sought to suppress.

One publication, Biuletyn Informacyjny (“Information Bulletin”), became a major newspaper of the Polish resistance.

By 1944, its circulation was estimated at around 42,000–43,000 copies, produced and distributed despite the risks of arrest and execution.

In parts of Tibet, a traditional funeral practice known as sky burial involves placing a deceased person's body at a designated site where vultures consume it. The practice is associated with Tibetan Buddhist beliefs about impermanence and the body's return to nature.

Funerals are often conducted by specialists, and the ceremonies follow local religious customs. The practice is shaped by Tibet's high-altitude environment, where wood can be scarce and the rocky ground makes burial difficult. 🏔

Wandjina cave drawings are sacred, ancient rock paintings created by the Indigenous peoples of the Kimberley region in Western Australia.

These striking, mouthless figures represent powerful cloud and rain spirits responsible for bringing the seasonal monsoon and maintaining life.

Historically dating back thousands of years, the monumental art is still traditionally repainted by Aboriginal custodians today to refresh its spiritual power and ensure the continuity of nature's cycles.

Fringe theorists and popular media (such as the TV show Ancient Aliens) often claim that the paintings depict extraterrestrial visitors.

In 1054, Christianity experienced a major split between the Church of Rome in the west and the Church of Constantinople in the east.

This event became known as the Great Schism.

The division developed over centuries of disagreements involving papal authority, theological differences, and church practices.

It formalized the separation between what became the Roman Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox Church, two major branches of Christianity that continue to exist today.

Have you ever felt your phone vibrate in your pocket, only to check it and find no notification?

This is known as phantom vibration syndrome. It describes the experience of mistakenly sensing that a phone is vibrating when it hasn't. Researchers have linked the phenomenon to how people become accustomed to checking their devices and interpreting ordinary bodily sensations as alerts.

It has been reported among frequent mobile phone users, including students and healthcare workers. 📱

Eating carrots can improve your night vision — but only to a point.

Carrots contain beta-carotene, which the body converts into vitamin A.

This vitamin is essential for producing rhodopsin, a light-sensitive pigment in the retina that helps the eyes function in low-light conditions.

However, eating extra carrots won't give someone with sufficient vitamin A unusually sharp night vision.

The popular belief was also amplified during World War II, when British authorities promoted stories about pilots' exceptional night vision to conceal the use of radar. 🥕👁

Have you ever felt embarrassed about something and assumed everyone noticed?

Psychologists call this the spotlight effect — our tendency to overestimate how much other people notice our appearance, mistakes, or behaviour.

In a 2000 experiment, researchers asked students to wear an embarrassing Barry Manilow T-shirt into a room of other students.

Those wearing the shirt estimated that far more people would notice it than actually did.

Most people are too occupied with their own thoughts to pay as much attention to us as we imagine.
