The overwhelming pressure meant the Leipzig defense stood no chance.This was a complete showing, with the defense also putting in a very solid performance. Germany’s Christmas markets are a wonderful, long standing tradition that brings together communities in a celebration of the holidays. And it is a tradition that was senselessly and brutally violated in German city Magdeburg this year. Mere hours ago, at the time of writing, a car plowed through the busy streets of cheerful shoppers, killing at least two and injuring at least 60 in the attack. In the light of this tragedy, Bayern Munich have responded accordingly. First, they canceled the Christmas celebration planned after the Bundesliga match against Ballsport Leipzig, then @iMiaSanMia captured Bayern reducing the post-match press conference to one short statement: “It’s almost impossible to talk about football tonight,” Bayern head coach Vincent Kompany said. “Right now the people in Magdeburg are in our thoughts. Hopefully at some point there will be peace, not only in Germany but everywhere. We won today, but I hope next year there will be more wins for peace.”Precisely. Such disgusting violence is harrowing and the thoughts of everyone at BFW go out to the victims of the brutal attack. Kane, who returned to the lineup after a hamstring injury, turned in a solid effort for the Bavarians despite not getting onto the scoresheet. “Sometimes there are more important things than football. In the game we produced a good performance. We were very dominant, moved the ball well and were good in our counter-pressing,” said Kane (as captured by FCBayern.com). “It’s a good way to round off the year. It’s always important for the feeling, you always want to go into a break with a win. We’re top of the table, which gives us a good feeling for the new year. We can enjoy the break a bit but then it’s about looking ahead.”Kane knows how important the team’s second half performance is and how this victory sends the squad into the break with a good feeling about what happened on the field. Like the great Bavarian teams of old, the Bayern players rose to the occasion with their backs against the wall.A sputtering 2-1 loss to Mainz last weekend put a stop to Bayern’s positive momentum, and a loss to RB Leipzig before the break would have prompted questions anew about progress under Vincent Kompany...and so naturally, Bayern dominated.Harry Kane and Alphonso Davies returned from injury and put on a show, but they were far from the only ones. Jamal Musiala got the scoring started after just 30 seconds of play. Michael Olise and Konrad Laimer connected on a beauty of a give-and-go volley goal. For Bayern Munich, the victory affirmed the club’s stronghold on the Bundesliga. The young midfielder just has not looked the same since coming back from a broken collarbone and Goretzka had filled in for him really well, but it was still a little surprising. Otherwise, Konrad Laimer made it back to the team in time to start, which was a big help for the right-back position. Alphonso Davies and Harry Kane also made their respective returns to the starting XI, which was expected. As always, Bayern Munich fans tend to not hold their tongue when it comes to RB Leipzig (apologies to anyone offended, but this really was a sign on display in the stadium, which shows the disdain RB Leipzig received from Bayern Munich fans): FC Bayern München v RB Leipzig - Bundesliga Photo by Harry Langer/DeFodi Images via Getty Images Tell us how you really feel... The start to the match was wild. In the 1st minute (!?), a bad turnover by RB Leipzig led to Harry Kane back-heeling a pass to a streaking Michael Olise, who found Jamal Musiala on a run to the net. While the attacking midfielder was credited with the goal, it appeared to actually deflect off of RB Leipzig defender Nicolas Seiwald.It would not take Die Roten Bullen long to answer, though. Some absolutely shambolic positional gambling by Kim Min-jae led to Lois Openda blazing by the center-back and finding Benjamin Šeško, who cut in front of a stumbling Dayot Upamecano to knot the game at 1-1. Min-jae has to be better than that. As for Upamecano, it looked like he lost his footing more than made a bad play/decision.Where is the Facts of Life theme song when you need it? Oh, right here. Šeško and Openda can turnstile even the most solid and consistent defenders, though, so it is not as if it was time to unravel — just simply time to regroup. Min-jae and Upamecano did rebound to have a solid showing overall.Clearly, these two teams were well aware of just how important this match was and they went at each very hard until Bayern Munich just went into Terminator Mode.Olise has had a very nice first half of the season for Bayern Munich, though sometimes he gets impatient with his positioning when on the weak side and creeps in too far centrally. It would be awesome for him let the game come to him a little more. Still, it was a very good showing for the Frenchman, who finished with two assists.Davies appeared to be a little rusty with his game play early on, but did pick it up. Kane, though, looked a little more sharp from the outset. Davies would ultimately have a really nice game.Interestingly, after RB Leipzig scored that early goal, Goretzka seemed to play a little deeper and almost form a back-three in the build-up as the outside-backs pushed up the field. In the 25th minute, Laimer — what a story he has been this week — volleyed in a goal off of a pass from Olise for a sensational goal. The Austrian seemed to really enjoy that one. If you missed it, Laimer shook off a potential injury and became a dad before scoring this goal. RB Leipzig’s play finally resembles the core of the clubThat is to say, it’s completely rotten. The Red Bull backed club were utterly terrible in this match and were fortunate to get away with just a 5-1 defeat. Though the team’s “launch the ball to our two good forwards and pray” tactic worked a treat in the 2nd minute, it did not work consistently and could not paper over the cracks of a defensively destitute and horribly but hilariously abject performance. After Bayern Munich’s recent poor run of form against Leipzig under Thomas Tuchel, the combination of such a poor opponent and such a brilliant Bayern side helped the club finally turn the corner. Speaking of Bavarian brilliance...Bayern ends a terrible 2024 with a bangIt has been a desperately disappointing year for Bayern. While all the headlines acknowledge that last season was Bayern’s first without a trophy since the 2011-12 season, it is also true that Bayern at least finished 2012 having won that year’s DFL Supercup. In 2024, Bayern were left with...what? The Visit Malta Cup, won in preseason? However, while trophies currently remain elusive, Bayern’s gift to the fans to end the year is the promise that 2025 will bring plenty of them. The team’s strength in this match indicate a ceiling that can crush the majority of opponents and compete with the best. Of course, Bayern are far from perfect, as last week’s loss to Mainz 05 indicates. Whether Bayern can reach this level they reached against Leipzig consistently will determine how much success the club will taste in 2025, but it still promises to be a year filled with many more trophies than 2024.The potential of Vincent Kompany’s Bayern is frighteningOf course, Leipzig were utterly and delightfully terrible. Of course, the return of Alphonso Davies and Harry Kane prompting such a strong performance suggests Bayern may be more reliant on the two than the club would hope, particularly for a guy who is out of contract in about six months and another who will be 32 in the summer. Despite these slight concerns, Bayern’s utterly brilliant performance was a statement, one that reminds everyone just how good this team is. After a blistering goal scoring start to the season, the 4-1 loss to FC Barcelona saw a rethink, with a more cautious and conservative Bayern emerging. At some point, fans wondered if Kompany’s team had become blunt and ineffective in attack (which is a real luxury concern when you’re still registering five goals in an away match in the Champions League) but this match blew even those luxury concerns away. The passing was incredibly slick, the players were completely in tune and the attack was running on all cylinders. Leipzig were overwhelmed by the different routes Bayern were willing to take: running around the defenders, attacking the inside, overloading the box, curving runs to confuse defenders, stretching the field, breaking the offside trap, pressing the life out of Leipzig...it was all working perfectly. It is a genuine wonder that the match ended with Bayern only registering five goals. In particular, the attackers were outstanding today. Jamal Musiala, Harry Kane and Michael Olise were their typical brilliant selves. But they have, at times, really had to carry the Bayern offense this season. Today, however, they were matched by another brilliant forward...Leroy Sané’s confidence has returnedIt is easy to focus on Leroy Sané’s misses. There were multiple of them, too, continuing a rather disappointing trend from this season. Sané has looked rather timid for the admittedly limited minutes he has played this season, with promising starts and moments of brilliance fading into sloppy, sluggish performances. His effort and application would never waver but he could not truly get going. But today, from minute 1 to 90, Sané was great. His link up play was as sharp as the other attackers around him, his movement full of verve and confidence…

That would be his only major contribution as both he himself and Leipzig as a team did not do too much else to impress in this match.Der Kaiser: Alphonso DaviesThe Canadian left-back is starting to build a convincing case for an increased salary at Bayern Munich, should he re-sign. Even if he leaves, his recent string of performances will certainly help his attraction. However, consistency has always been a problem for the Canadian.Fußballgott: Leon GoretzkaIt feels good to see Goretzka back in the squad, and even play a full 90-minute performance. Goretzka has a chance to work himself back into a starter role here and he seems keen to do exactly that.Der Bomber: Jamal MusialaThe Bayern Munich superstar impressed once again with a goal within the first 30 seconds as well as an assist on Kimmich’s strike.
