In the endless quest to reduce the wage bill at Bayern Munich, director of sport Max Eberl has finally begun his purge of the squad veterans whose earnings don’t match their contributions on the pitch. Thomas Müller (€20M salary) was unceremoniously shown the exit without so much as a low ball offer, although the club did a decent job on the farewell tour toward the end of the season. Leroy Sané (€15M salary) was offered a reasonable contract renewal but Bayern’s front office was outbid by Galatasaray.While the salaries are off the books, Bayern will need to find reinforcements in the summer transfer window.“With Leroy and Thomas leaving, we’ll have two fewer players in attack,” (via @iMiaSanMia). “We’ll see what that means for our transfer plans after the Club World Cup. Now it’s Club World Cup, the focus is fully here, and then we’ll see after [the tournament].”Regarding Sané (via @iMiaSanMia), Eberl reaffirmed that Bayern “...clearly said that we wanted to do it [contract extension], but under terms that we think are right. There’s this topic at FC Bayern that salary costs are too high. We made him an offer that we believe is correct. It’s normal that a player has another offer and accepts it, that’s legitimate. There’s no bad blood.”If Bayern advances deep into the Club World Cup, the club may not have the luxury of waiting until the squad returns to Germany to make a move. After missing out on Florian Wirtz, Bayern will need to be proactive in their hunt for a world class left winger.

Liga Of course, Bayern Munich’s U-23s sees players under the age of 23 line up to develop their game and hopefully grow to be of the quality to play for Die Rekordmeister. However, a team full of young players will lack leadership and experience. Germany allows U-23 teams to have three players above the age of 23 for this reason and Bayern usually takes advantage of those three slots.However, Bayern II (U-23) veteran and captain of the team Timo Kern, at the club since 2019, retired in the January of 2025. With him went a lot of experience and, though Kern’s absence cannot be attributed as the only reason for this, from January onwards Bayern II’s season entirely collapsed. Ergo, the Bavarians need a new experienced player to replace Kern.In comes winger David Heinz, with the club officially announcing the 27-year-old’s arrival from Alemannia Aachen on their website. Campus sporting director Markus Weinzierl confirmed him as the Kern replacement: “We lost veteran Timo Kern, a reliable goalscorer and assist provider, last winter. We wanted to fill this vacancy and found a suitable candidate in Anton Heinz. Anton was Alemannia’s top scorer in the year they were promoted [from the Regionalliga West] and also played a part in their survival. We are convinced that he is a great fit for us and that his experience and footballing qualities will give our young players more stability on the pitch. I am very pleased that we were able to recruit him for our Regionalliga team.” Heinz, meanwhile, had this to say: “My first jersey was for FC Bayern. So, it’s a dream come true for me. I’m proud to have signed here, and I’m incredibly excited about this new challenge.”BFW AnalysisFirst and foremost, this is the clearest sign of the club’s big push to get promoted next season yet. There have been multiple other signings this summer of over 20 players which strongly hinted at the club’s ambition, but this is the strongest yet. Clearly, the goal player development has diminished in importance next to the goal of getting promoted.Timo Kern played in a more attacking midfield role, while Heinz seems to be a winger. This is not a one to one positional replacement. It also makes the logjam on the wing position even more complicated. The team has seven other wingers in the squad, without counting possible call-ups from the U-19s such as Lennart Karl or Wisdom Mike, among many other names. Heinz will be the 8th winger option. Either there will be a significant amount of sales or loans, or there will be a lack of game time for the youngsters in the squad.

Bayern Munich’s loss to Inter Milan in the Champions League halted the club’s attempts at reaching the Finale Dahoam, named so due to Europe’s top footballing competition having been held in Munich this year. A close game saw the Italian team come out on top and end the Bavarians’ dream once and for all. Leon Goretzka started both legs of that tie. Speaking to German newspaper Welt am Sonntag, he admitted that the loss still vexed him: “It’s brutally difficult to reach a Champions League final. That doesn’t change if the final is played in your stadium; that doesn’t make it any more likely. Nevertheless, a lot would have been possible this season,” Goretzka lamented, as captured by @iMiaSanMia. “Small moments decided the outcome; as so often in recent years, the overall situation was somewhat against us at the crucial moment. We were missing key players. Things could have turned out differently. We played very well against Inter and deserved more. It’s incredibly frustrating. Nevertheless, I believe we’re on the right track.”Next season must be the season, then.

If Bayern Munich is eyeing a huge €130M payday this summer from transfer outgoings, as one report suggests, it may have to do without the sale of French winger Kingsley Coman.The 29-year-old has been a mainstay in the Bayern roster since the 2015/16 season, but was one of three highly-paid veterans in the same position group last season, alongside Leroy Sané and Serge Gnabry.While Sané is out already and Coman is rumored to be a prime sale candidate, nothing has materialized yet and it may not even happening. That’s from a Sky Germany report via journalist Kerry Hau, as captured by @iMiaSanMia:Both Kingsley Coman and FC Bayern are open to continuing together. The Frenchman feels very comfortable in the team and is not pushing for a move. At the moment, there are no concrete offers for Coman. According to a report from Sport Bild journalists Christian Falk and Tobi Altschäffl (as captured by @iMiaSanMia_GER), PSV Eindhoven would like to bring in Bayern Munich goalkeeper Daniel Peretz on loan, but is not offering enough of a fee for the Bavarians to push the deal over the finish line: Daniel Peretz’s loan is still on hold because PSV Eindhoven is offering too little, and Bayern is demanding too much for the loan. It’s clear that Peretz will be loaned out. He wants to go to PSV, but the clubs can’t yet agree. Peretz’s role figures to be non-existent next season with Manuel Neuer, Jonas Urbig, and Sven Ulreich already on Bayern Munich’s roster. David Ornstein of The Athletic has broken down what is going on between Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams, Bayern Munich, and FC Barcelona. X account @iMiaSanMia detailed Ornstein’s report, which has the Catalans as the clear leader in the race, while also providing a pathway for the Bavarians to still end up with the 22-year-old. As of now, though, it is clear — the two finalists for Williams at the moment are FC Barcelona and Bayern Munich: Despite Premier League sides being among his admirers, Barcelona and Bayern Munich are emerging as more plausible destinations if Nico Williams leaves Athletic Club. Arsenal and Chelsea have somewhat cooled their pursuit, and that increases the chances of others in the frame stepping up their interest.Barcelona are pushing hard and carry an appeal to Williams, especially given his close bond with their Lamine Yamal, plus Liverpool’s reluctance to do business for Luis Díaz — initially their preferred candidate. Barcelona already have Raphinha in this position and it is also complicated for them to register new squad members due to their financial health; however, they are trying to make it happen.FC Barcelona’s financial difficulties do not necessarily mean that the club cannot afford Williams (though, there is some doubt about how much financing would be needed), but “clearing enough room” could be an issue. To avoid having the same registration issues it faced last summer with Danio Olmo, Barca might have to sell multiple players (per The Athletic via @iMiaSanMia).Nico Williams wouldn’t be an easy deal from a financial perspective for Barcelona. They would need to arrange multiple departures from the current squad before being able to register a new player of Williams’ caliber. Per Ornstein, Bayern Munich has already made an offer and could up its proposal shortly: Bayern are believed to have conveyed an offer to the player, and a second may follow, as the German champions weigh up multiple options to strengthen in the wide attacking areas. Florian Wirtz of Bayer Leverkusen was their top target, but he has opted for Liverpool, while it is probable that Bradley Barcola — another liked by Bayern — will remain at Paris Saint-Germain. Former Bayern Munich and Germany great Lothar Matthäus thinks Harry Kane could be frustrated with the English national team and head coach Thomas Tuchel. “Harry Kane came away empty-handed in the 10-0 win. He may have recently scored England’s 1-0 goal against Andorra, but when he’s been with the national team, he always needs to be encouraged. At Bayern, fun, enjoyment, and attacking are the top priorities; at England, football isn’t even being worked on at the moment. It is sad to see (Editor’s Note: because of) how professional Kane is at his job,” Matthäus told Sky Sport (as captured by Goal). “He doesn’t seem particularly happy under current coach Tuchel — just as he was under his predecessor (Gareth) Southgate. His body language at Bayern is different than it is with the national team.”Now...it should be noted that Kane recently praised Tuchel and also that Matthäus has a history of feuding with Tuchel, so maybe the pundit is not the most unbiased source to give an opinion on the matter.That said, Tuchel did recently shred his squad to the media (where have we seen that before?), so it is conceivable that some players could already be growing weary of Tuchel. Who knows, but Kane will not have to worry about the Three Lions for a while and can put his focus on his role with Bayern Munich. Eberl takes umbrage with Min-jae assertions (@iMiaSanMia)It would seem kind of odd to deny that Bayern Munich playing Kim Min-jae while he was nursing an injury last season has played a role in why the big defender is still out and trying to get healthy, but board member for sport does not think that the club risked the player’s health. “Min-jae is struggling a bit with his Achilles tendon. It’s been said a lot that we risked his health. That’s never been the case - we’ve always had everything under control. Now he said he wanted to rest and get healthy. He will resume training in the next few days and join the squad. There’s competition with Kim, Upa (Dayot Upamecano), Jona (Jonathan Tah), Stani (Josip Stanišić) and Hiroki (Hiroki Itō) when he comes back. We’re very well equipped defensively. Min-jae should also fight,” said Eberl.Min-jae played injured for the majority of last season and it could be argued that much of the fault lies with him for continuing to push to go out there, even as Eric Dier was rarely used early in the season. As for who is responsible, it seems that the fault would be with both the player and club. As for fighting for a position, Min-jae has been rumored to want to be in a position where he is a starter, so it should be interesting to see what happens now that he is the third choice in a formation with two starting roles. It still feels like Min-jae could move on this summer if he can get healthy (which is a big question mark). Ter Stegen to stay put? (Foot Mercato)Marc-André ter Stegen was linked to Galatasaray over the weekend, but might not be going anywhere: According to “Partidazo de Cope”, the FC Barcelona goalkeeper will not be leaving Catalonia this summer. The Spanish media outlet claims that Ter Stegen does not intend to terminate his contract, and that Barça has not accepted any offers from the clubs mentioned in the European press. This further bogs down the situation for the German goalkeeper.Ter Stegen’s role as the German national team goalkeeper could suffer if he is not the starter for FC Barcelona. This could be an evolving situation to keep an eye on over the summer. Bayern Munich midfielder Gabriel Vidović has swapped one Rekordmeister for another after he signed permanently for Croatia’s Dinamo Zagreb.Sporting director Christoph Freund said (via FCBayern.com): “Gabriel Vidović learned his trade at our FC Bayern Campus and then continued to develop through our loan concept, accepting every challenge. Now is the right time for the next step in his career. We would like to thank him for his commitment and wish him continued success both on a sporting and personal level.” The 21-year old youngster made his debut for Bayern’s first team in 2022 against Arminia Bielefeld, but never really established himself afterwards. He went on loan to SBV Vitesse in the Netherlands and Mainz 05, and even to Zagreb in between those two spells. Now, the Croatian record champions are bringing in the starlet once more, this time to stay.During his time at Bayern, Vidović won three official titles — two Bundesliga championships and one Supercup. However, his crowning moment in a Bayern shirt did not come in an official match, but in a preseason game against Tottenham Hotspur last summer in Seoul. He scored the opener and helped Bayern to the coveted (?) Coupang Play Series title.Although Vidović is Croatian, he was born in Germany, Augsburg to be exact, so this move is not a traditional homecoming. However, he does have the honor of playing for the biggest clubs in both his home countries now, so there’s that.Vidović and Bayern will not have a reunion any time soon, though, as Zagreb will not be competing in the Champions League next season. Their second place finish in the league granted them a spot in the Europa League instead.

Since the arrival of Thomas Tuchel in 2023, Bayern Munich were hell bent on signing Portuguese midfielder, João Palhinha from Fulham FC. Despite a collapsed summer transfer in 2023, Die Rekordmeister eventually got their man the following season, however, may be regretting their decision. According to Sport Bild’s Tobi Altschäffl, Bayern passed up the opportunity to sign fellow countryman, João Neves, in favour of Palhinha (as captured by @iMiaSanMia): João Neves was offered to Bayern last summer. Former chief scout Markus Pilawa strongly advocated for the signing of Neves internally - but the club was very fixated on signing João Palhinha after his failed move the summer before, so the idea of João Neves was discardedMy initial thought was that Bayern did not have the funds to sign the young talent from Benfica, although, Neves joined PSG for around €58m, with add-ons rising up to €70m, not a great length off Palhinha’s transfer fee of €56m. If Bayern really did have the opportunity to land Neves over Palhinha, they will be slapping themselves in the face, especially considering Palhinha is one of the top candidates for sale just one year after he joined the club. Meanwhile, João Neves is proving himself to be one of the world’s brightest midfield talents.
