If you have followed my prognostication travails in the Weekend Warm-up, you know I am essentially Charlie Brown...Hoffenheim is Lucy...and my picks are the football. There was a lot of faith put in Hoffenheim this season, but they have vastly underachieved. Now, with this game being virtually meaningless for both teams (barring a complete destruction by six goals or more by Bayern Munich, which could jeopardize Hoffenheim’s safe status in the Bundesliga), each squad just wants to get out of this one healthy. It just feels like Bayern Munich is going to play with a purpose for at least a bit and put a beating on the home side. Eric Dier is departing Bayern Munich this summer after just one-and-a-half seasons playing for the German Rekordmeister. But the former Tottenham Hotspur man and England international has made a lasting impression in his short time in Bavaria.That goes both ways, too. In an interview for club magazine Säbener 51 in March, Dier discussed which of his soon-to-be-former Bayern teammates stood out to him the most.“Oh, I could list them all,” Dier answered in comments captured by @iMiaSanMia. “Joshua Kimmich didn’t surprise me because I already knew about him, but it’s impressive to see him every day — his consistency, his attitude, his preparation and the way he works in every training session. The same goes for Thomas Müller. He embodies the club in a unique way. He conveys what Bayern Munich means through his behavior, his training work and his games. It’s great for every new player to have someone like him to look up to. You immediately understand what Bayern is all about. “And then there’s Manuel Neuer. He really surprised me — not because of his quality, of course I was aware of that, but because he is much calmer than I would’ve expected. He radiates an incredible calmness. But do you know what fascinates me most about him? His passion for training. He’s 38 years old and has won everything, really everything, but his love of football and his ambition are undiminished. That also explains why he’s still playing at this level. For me, he’s the best goalkeeper I’ve ever seen. And when you see him in training, you understand why. It has been said a lot, but Vincent Kompany has been an easy fit at Bayern Munich.The former Manchester City player and Belgian international has taken to Bavaria like a fish to water. Despite not being one of the hottest names on the coaching market at the time, his appointment in retrospect looks like an obvious pairing.And that is no accident.“When I became head coach in Munich, it was something very familiar to me,” Kompany said in comments captured by FIFA.com earlier this year (via @iMiaSanMia). “I didn’t come into an environment where I felt like a stranger, but one where I had grown up and whose challenges I understood. Although it’s an international club and really very advanced in terms of branding and commercialization, FC Bayern remains a very, very traditional club. I think that’s what makes the club so special. They have clear values and are very committed to them.”It isn’t just the culture off the field but also the style on it that suits Kompany so well.“What I like, not only as coach of Bayern Munich, but what I have also experienced as an opponent, is when you are a visiting team facing the great Bayern teams of the past, you can’t get any space to breathe,” Kompany continued. “I’m not saying that we [already] are, but that has to be our goal.”A Bundesliga title in convincing fashion, and a Champions League quarterfinals appearance. I understand the discussion, but it’s impossible to assess the whole thing because our defense never really played together. Hiroki and Phonzy won’t be at the Club World Cup either. Today is — allegedly — the day for Leroy Sané to make his decision on whether or not he will accept Bayern Munich’s offer per Tz’s Philipp Kessler and Mano Bonke (via @iMiaSanMia): The deadline that Bayern had set for Leroy Sané, whether to take the club’s current offer or to leave, expires today. Sky Sport journalist Florian Plettenberg reiterated that Bayern Munich is not likely to change its offer and also mentioned that Arsenal FC is back in the race for the German international: FC Bayern are sticking to their offer for Leroy #Sané: around €10 million fixed plus €5.5 million in bonuses, as revealed — ideally with no signing fee and a contract running until 2028.Max Eberl wants clarity by or just after the weekend: “Leroy and his agency know what we want and they know the conditions. We hope he decides for us.”⚠️ Arsenal are back in the race. Bayern Munich is the Bundesliga champion in a season where some fans are feeling satisfied, while others...not so much. Let’s take a look at the best and worst things that happened during the 2024/25 campaign: The GoodA Bundesliga title: The goal for this season was singular — win the Bundesliga. Mission accomplished. Michael Olise was a smash hit: Bayern Munich desperately needed a wing to own the position and Olise was extremely good all season. At a time where Leroy Sané, Serge Gnabry, and Kingsley Coman could not consistently perform, Olise set the standard for success. Max Eberl and his team deserve a lot of credit for this move.Vincent Kompany got the job done: There was a lot of skepticism over the hiring of the ex-Burnley coach, but the Belgian showed he has the chops to handle the job. It was not perfect and there were plenty of decisions that were rightfully questioned, but Kompany proved he was up to the task. Now...can he improve?Key contract extensions got done: Max Eberl and the front office group wrapped up Joshua Kimmich, Jamal Musiala, Manuel Neuer, and Alphonso Davies. None of those deals were an easy task and the front front office has taken some criticism for not bring able to lower salaries, but the job got done. The acquisition of Jonas Urbig: Finally — after a couple attempts — Bayern Munich might actually have a worthy successor to Neuer. Urbig was very, very good in filling for Neuer and while he did have a few “teachable moments”, he showed that he has the natural talent and instincts to be “the next one” at Bayern Munich. Now, it is up to the youngster to keep that upward trajectory going.Müller’s send off: If the club did anything right this season, it was the presentation and atmosphere built for Müller’s final game at the Allianz Arena. The crowd was sensational, the ceremony was on-point, and the entire team realized just how big the moment was. Aces all around.The BadInjuries still hammered Bayern Munich: Bayern Munich just cannot avoid the wrath of the injury gods. Harry Kane, Jamal Musiala, Josip Stanišić, Aleksandar Pavlović, Kingsley Coman, Sacha Boey, João Palhinha, Hiroki Itō, Manuel Neuer, Daniel Peretz, and Sven Ulreich (though his situation is still unknown as to why he missed so much time) all missed significant time, while Kim Min-jae played injury for the majority of the season. Maybe this is the norm at Bayern Munich, but it still stings. The lack of rotation: Kompany’s refusal to use Eric Dier early in the season led to Dayot Upamecano and Min-jae both wearing down again. Min-jae even played most of the season with Achilles tendinitis, which hampered his performances.The lack of young players integrated into the squad: Kompany became the latest Bayern Munich to struggle with ways to integrate young talent. Manuel Neuer’s injuries opened up some time for the young goalkeepers, but otherwise, it was slim pickings.Sacha Boey: At a time where Bayern Munich desperately needed a right-back, Boey was either hurt or underperformed — so much so that Kompany leaned on central midfielder Konrad Laimer to man the position. A questionable (and expensive) transfer to everyone except Christoph Freund, Boey has just never found his footing at Bayern Munich and will at least be shopped around this summer.The Champions League: Bayern Munich had its moments in the UCL, but was just not good enough against some of its top-tier competitors (and even some of the lesser squads, too). While it — overall — was not horrible, it felt like Kompany was not flexible enough to adjust. The end result — for this season — was...fine, but it was more concerning with how the squad looked at times during the competition. The UglyThe handling of Müller: At one point everyone thought Müller was getting a one-year contract extension (including Müller and Eberl), but “the club” changed its tune at the last minute and…

Bayern Munich youngster Felipe Chávez is drawing a lot of interest on the market and was involved in first team training on Friday. While the young Peruvian will not dress against Hoffenheim, his inclusion in training was another feather in his cap: Felipe Chávez (18) was involved in first team training yesterday and today as a reward for his strong performances for the youth teams this season. Chávez still won’t be in the squad against Hoffenheim tomorrow, but the fact he’s now training with the first team suggests that he’s getting closer. Chávez’s contract expires at the end of the season. Several Bundesliga clubs have already expressed interest in him.It seems as if Chávez is the latest in a long line of attacking midfield-type players who have emerged from the academy. While eventually making it to the first team has proven to be a tall task for many of those players, Chávez seems more than willing to throw his hat in the ring to be the next academy player to breakthrough to the senior squad. Say it ain’t so because it might not matter anyway (CaughtOffside)Sport Bild journalist Christian Falk is reporting that Liverpool FC might be taking a run at trying to jump ahead of Manchester City in the race for Bayern Munich transfer target and Bayer Leverkusen attacking midfielder Florian Wirtz: Liverpool may consider their hopes of beating FC Bayern to Florian Wirtz a little slim. Still, they can take comfort from the fact that they are considered ahead of domestic rivals Manchester City. That’s despite Pep Guardiola having made personal overtures to Wirtz ahead of the summer window.Even with that, Falk says that both Liverpool and Manchester City are both still longshots behind Bayern Munich: It’s probably best to categorise Liverpool’s chances of winning the race for the German international as unlikely at best. Indeed, despite evident interest from the Premier League in Florian Wirtz, Christian Falk now reports that Bayern Munich are ‘optimistic’ of completing the signing.“We have already reported that Manchester City have made an offer for the German,” the head of football at BILD exclusively informed CaughtOffside. “Apparently, however, there has also been a meeting with Liverpool FC. As things stand, Liverpool are further ahead than Man City in the poker. But, the truth is: FC Bayern are still optimistic that they will get their dream player. Either this summer or in 2026, as his contract runs until 2027.”As for how much it will cost to get Wirtz, even Falk has some doubt that Bayern Munich’s rumored offer will be close to enough to get the Germany international: Bayern are understood to be preparing an opening bid in the region of €100m [£84.6m]. However, it remains to be seen whether this will touch the sides for Bayer Leverkusen. Given the scale of interest, the former Bundesliga champions are well within their rights to get a fee closer to their preferred asking price of €150m [£126.3m].On their podcast, Falk and his colleague, Tobi Altschäffl, indicated that Bayern Munich is “very, very certain” that the club will get Wirtz (via @iMiaSanMia). Bayern Munich won the Bundesliga this year with a 11 point lead over Bayer 04 Leverkusen. The latter clinched the double last year — the Bundesliga and the DFB Pokal; the league was on won with a 18 point lead over the Bavarians. Die Werkself’s journey to the double was almost movie-like and came after years of being titled “Neverkusen” by pundits and fans. The team also reached the Europa League final against Atalanta, and despite losing 3-0, they managed to win the hearts of several fans across the globe. A key player in Leverkusen’s dream season was Granit Xhaka. The former Gladbach and Arsenal FC man was signed for a five-year deal in the summer of 2023. He was a man reborn under manager Xabi Alonso — leading the team with his expertise and skillsets. His singular goal won them the Pokal against FC Kaiserslautern.Despite Xhaka and Leverkusen’s valiant efforts, they could not win the league — Bayern under Vincent Kompany came out of their rut and put up a strong fight to win the league. Speaking to DAZN, the Swiss captain congratulated the Bavarians for the well-deserved win. “Congratulations to Bayern, they’ve had an outstanding season,” he said, as transcribed by @iMiaSanMia. “We tried until the end, but unfortunately it wasn’t enough. We conceded stupid goals and dropped too many points against opponents we really should have beaten.“We’ll definitely be back on the attack next season.”It remains to be seen how Leverkusen will handle the loss of Xabi Alonso, who has made the move to his former club Real Madrid. Without Alonso at the helm, and the upcoming transfer of Florian Wirtz, Leverkusen will be punted into a difficult period of transition. But one can only wish them the best in their pursuits.

Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany has had a great first season in Bavaria and is looking forward to give the Bundesliga season a proper ending. “It’s about (Hoffenheim)’s battle to stay up, but in reality they score a huge amount of goals. They’re not an opponent who sit back. They have ways of hurting opponents on the ball. I’ve seen very few games where opponents have managed to get to grips with Hoffenheim’s attack. Things obviously look different in the table. We’ve won the title with lots of hard work and can’t give any opponents the gift of allowing them a good afternoon against us,” Kompany said (via @iMiaSanMia). “If everything goes well, everyone who was there last week is available tomorrow.”Kompany was asked about the Ibiza trip this week for some of his players and the manager said it was a non-issue. “It was a topic for you, not for me. For me, the topic was Hoffenheim and the match preparation. We had a lot of time to prepare well. We had a good week. The fact that Bayern Munich is being talked about is part of it, we accept that.” Kompany said. As for what the next few weeks will look like, Kompany talked through it.“Some of the guys will be going to the national team. The few who aren’t going to the national team will get two weeks off. We’ll be together again on June 5th. It will be a small group. Then on June 10th, we’ll fly to the US. But not everyone will be there at first. Everyone has their own schedule, and they’ll have to do a bit of training during those two weeks. But we also want it to be a vacation. We’re looking forward to the next competition,” Kompany said. One of the many reports that broke this week included a very tall task for Bayern Munich board member for sport Max Eberl.The report indicated that Eberl would need to raise €100 million in sales this summer to help fund some of the club’s moves. Players like Leon Goretzka, Serge Gnabry, and Kingsley Coman are primary figures for the club to sell, but might not want to leave. Sure, Kim MIn-jae could be sold if the club signs Jonathan Tah on a free transfer, but it is tough to envision who else might command a hefty fee. Maybe the club could sell João Palhinha or Raphaël Guerreiro, but getting to nine figures might be tough. FC Heidenheim 1846 - Bundesliga Photo by Maja Hitij/Getty Images Frank Schmidt doesn’t think Bayern’s Ibiza celebrations will affect how they perform against Hoffenheim this weekend. Bayern Munich technically clinched the Bundesliga title in what’s been dubbed as “sofameister” fashion after Bayer Leverkusen failed to beat SC Freiburg on the same weekend Bayern drew RB Leipzig 3-3. Bayern was on the verge of clinching the title via their own action, but a late, late equalizer from Leipzig’s Yussuf Poulsen spoiled the party at the RedBull Arena and forced Bayern to wait 24 hours to officially start celebrating. The Bayern squad officially celebrated the title at the Allianz Arena after their 2-0 win over Borussia Mönchengladbach in what was also a momentous occasion with it being the final match at “Dahoam” for Thomas Müller. After said win and celebrations, several members of the squad jetted off to Ibiza for two and a half days for some continued celebrations after the short trip had been delayed by a week. The trip was not taken well by Mainz sporting director Christian Heidl and BILD expert Marcel Reif, who both felt a certain level of disrespect was shown to the rest of the league with Bayern’s players going off on a mini-celebration trip.Despite the Bundesliga relegation ramifications that Bayern’s final Bundesliga match of the season has against TSG Hoffenheim, Heidenheim manager Frank Schmidt is okay with the sentiment of several of Bayern’s players having gone away for a few days. “I’m completely relaxed about that. What we can influence is our performance, our result against Werder Bremen. After that if we win, we’ll see what happens in Hoffenheim. The focus is already so big on Bayern. This is FC Bayern, they’ve never given anything away. They won’t give anything away. They’ll give their best performance, just as we have to do,” Schmidt explained, giving credit to Bayern’s professionalism (Sport.de via @iMiaSanMia). In the Bundesliga table, Heidenheim are currently in 16th place; the relegation playoff spot, while Hoffenheim is right above them in 15th place — just three points ahead of them to be precise. If Bayern takes care of Hoffenheim by a considerable margin and Heidenheim beats Werder Bremen on the final match day, with a significant goal difference swing, there’s a chance Heidenheim could leapfrog Hoffenheim out of the relegation zone, which is why there was some criticism for some of Bayern’s stars having the trip to Ibiza, giving off the impression that they’re already in holiday mode ahead of the FIFA Club World Cup preparations. Regardless of the Bundesliga relegation ramifications this weekend, Bayern will have motivation of their own. They can’t finish any higher than 82 points, but if they are able to score five goals, they’ll have reached a century of goals for the season and would also better their points tally from the past four seasons, equaling their tally of 82 points from the famous Sextuple season of 2019/20 under (mostly) Hansi Flick.
