Bayern Munich president Herbert Hainer dismissed critics of Bayern’s big game performance this season.The Bavarians are leading the league and in position to qualify for the next round of the Champions League, but there are holes in the resume if you look closer. Still, that is not worrying the Bayern bosses at the moment.“I don’t want to look at it that way,” Hainer said in an interview published December 5 in Tz München (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “We played an excellent game in Dortmund, for example, and now against Leverkusen, just like we did against them in the league, we won 4-0 against Stuttgart and beat Paris. We’ll win a lot more games — even a lot of so-called big games. We also have to save something for the spring, when we’re in the decisive phase of the season.”That is a fair point — better to hit one’s stride in the spring than peak too early in the fall. CRAZY START AT THE ALLIANZ ARENA! 😵💫
Germany v Hungary: Group A - UEFA EURO 2024 Munich and Stuttgart were named as the host cities should Germany advance to the next round. Germany was in euphoria in the summer of 2024. Julian Nagelsmann had the nations rallying around an exciting team filled with a mix of legendary leaders such as Toni Kroos as well as young superstars in Jamal Musiala and Florian Wirtz. Unfortunately, that euphoria came to an early end as they were controversially eliminated by Spain in Stuttgart.Now Stuttgart has the opportunity to redeem itself for Germany as Munich and Stuttgart have been named the official host cities for the Nations League Final Four should Germany advance past Italy in the quarterfinals during March.On the other hand, Italy will host these matches if they advance past Germany in Turin. The DFB stated they want to keep the excitement around football continuing and what a great opportunity this will be for the nation. A very likely finals matchup could be Germany vs Spain and what a match that would be.It is not yet said which stadium will host which matches, but presumably, Munich would host Germany vs the winner of Portugal and Denmark, while Stuttgart should receive the winner of Spain vs Netherlands against the winner of France vs Croatia. Munich would also likely host the finals, whereas Stuttgart would host the third-place game. However, none of this has been confirmed at the moment.How important would a Nations League be for Germany? The team’s performance is as good as any nation at the moment, yet betting companies still see Germany as a slight outsider for the 2026 FIFA World Cup behind the main favorites of Brazil, France, Spain, and England. For the better part of the last year, Bayern Munich star left-back Alphonso Davies has been very closely linked to Real Madrid, but those rumors have cooled in recent weeks in favor of whispers that the Canadian would re-up with the Bavarians. In the middle of all of that, Manchester United threw its hat into the ring, but did not appear to make much serious headway. Now, though, there could be another serious contender to land Davies, a free agent this summer — Liverpool FC. Sport Bild’s Christian Falk, in his work for CaughtOffside, detailed the story: Manchester United and Real Madrid could have some competition on their hands in their respective bids to sign Bayern Munich left-back Alphonso Davies. Los Blancos can currently call upon Ferland Mendy and Fran Garcia in the role, though one could reasonably argue the Canadian would represent an improvement on both options.Over at Old Trafford, there can be no arguments brooked when comparing the 24-year-old to Tyrell Malacia, whilst the talented Luke Shaw is too frequently injured to be considered a reliable force. Yet there is some debate over whether Manchester would be Davies’ preferred destination.With Liverpool also potentially keen on bolstering the left-back position, bearing in mind Andy Robertson’s recent struggles on the pitch, a potential move for the fullback is looking complicated.Falk went further with it than just a careless whisper: Alphonso Davies is open to a potential transfer away from Bayern Munich. He’s not 100% fixed on Manchester United or Real Madrid. I heard that talks with Bayern, at the moment, are on ice until January. His agent, Nick Huoseh, will talk with any interested top club in the new year. When Huoseh is on his tour of England, Liverpool could get a meeting with him. It would be a good club for Davies, of course, given they play a style of football that would suit him. Liverpool, naturally, have a chance.I think Manchester United and Real Madrid are more concrete by comparison at this point in time. Bayern are also applying pressure to sign him up to a new contract. They’re still hopeful about making this work. So, Liverpool are still in the race, if they want him. Who would have thought that the perception of Bayern Munich’s first half of the season could hinge on one singular match against RB Leipzig?In reality, Bayern Munich has had a very strong start to the campaign and also to the club’s tenure under the direction of head coach Vincent Kompany. Bayern Munich sits in first place of the Bundesliga and is in a good position in the Champions League with two “League Phase” matches left to play. Sure, there was the DFB-Pokal debacle against Bayer Leverkusen, but for the most part, things have been really good: FC Bayern Munich Training Session Photo by S. Bundesliga: 10-3-1Champions League: 4-0-2DFB-Pokal: 2-0-1Overall: 16-3-4That is not too shabby, but how Bayern Munich gotten to this point was not always filled with dominant or even complete performances. There is also the harsh reality that club is a definite period of transition with players like Thomas Müller and Manuel Neuer potentially being their last season or two at the club. How Bayern Munich eventually replaces those veterans, while also turning over several other rosters spots currently occupied by other established players has some fans uneasy, which has affected the way the might look or feel about how the first half of the season has played out. While the focus should on the present, many fans cannot help, but keep one eye on the future. Regardless, Bayern Munich has been good. Very good. Great? Let’s not get too far ahead of things just yet. There is still vast potential with this team and it is still considered to be the frontrunner in the Bundesliga and a serious (but not necessarily top) contender in the Champions League. That said, Bayern Munich has much to prove in the second half of the season — including its ability to consistent perform against the best competition. RB Leipzig should give Bayern Munich another chance to prove its mettle in that respect. It has been a good run, but the next 90 minutes could determine how people ultimately feel about the last three-and-a-half months. Is a banged up Bayern Munich team going to be up to the task of sending itself — and its fanbase — into the next few weeks on a good note?It should, but RB Leipzig will not go down easily — and maybe that is exactly why this particular fixture is important to so many. Thomas Tuchel’s appointment to the English national team made a lot of sense, even after the coach was unceremoniously dumped by Bayern Munich after last season. Noted pundit Didi Hamann just wants fans of the Three Lions to give Tuchel a chance. “I think England and the media need to give Thomas Tuchel a chance. Quite a few ex-players have complained that he’s not an English manager, but football is a results-based business, if Tuchel wins then no one will be complaining. Germany and England probably is the biggest international rivalry, but I think you need to give Tuchel a chance,” Hamann told Flashscore. “In eight years, our international team has not been progressing well and I was close to accepting the fact we needed a foreign manager to come in, someone who can have a perspective of the situation from the outside. I wouldn’t have been opposed to having an England or foreign manager, if they’re better than Germany’s managers, then it’s a no-brainer. “If Germany were to hire someone it would be someone who has been hugely successful, someone who has won multiple titles so right now it’s hard to put an English name to that. If (Julian) Nagelsmann were to leave then I would imagine (Jürgen) Klopp is highly likely to be the first port of call.”With the World Cup a year-and-a-half away, Tuchel has time to sort through his squad, but will have to start forging those bonds and installing his systems as soon as possible if he wants to have any chance of having fans entertaining thoughts like, “It’s coming home” once again.

Lace ‘em up!).With Sacha Boey and Josip Stanišić already ruled out for Friday’s Bundesliga match against RB Leipzig, Laimer missed training on Tuesday, practiced on Wednesday, and was out again on Thursday — this time, though, it had nothing to do with an injury. Instead, Laimer did not train because his wife was set to give birth per Bild (via @iMiaSanMia):Konrad Laimer did not train with the team today as his wife Ines-Sarah is about to give birth to their first child. It’s currently unclear whether Laimer will be available against Leipzig tomorrow. If Laimer misses the game, Raphaël Guerreiro could fill in at right-back, while Alphonso Davies takes the reins at left-back. However, Vincent Kompany did not commit to starting Davies yet (though it is expected the Canadian will get the nod). Who’s left? Well, if things really go south with Davies, Adam Aznou better limber up. Bayern Munich took a step back last weekend in a 2-1 loss to Mainz 05, which put a lot of emphasis on this Friday’s final match before the Winterpause, which is against RB Leipzig.Not exactly a great scenario for the Bavarians, but CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen is ready to turn the page on what could be a “decisive moment” for the season per Joshua Kimmich. “We didn’t play well in Mainz, we’re all aware of that. Joshua Kimmich put it accurately that we need to take the situation seriously and sharpen up. The last game of the year is important, we want to finish the year properly, in other words: beat Leipzig,” Dreesen told Tz’s Hanna Raif (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “It’s an important moment because we obviously want to defend our lead at the top. That includes making it clear to the competition that they cannot catch us. We had eight injured players in Mainz, but we are not complaining, FC Bayern never did that. We definitely had enough quality on the pitch to win the game.”RB Leipzig will present a significant challenge to Bayern Munich and could be playing with a purpose given how Marco Rose’s job could be in jeopardy.High stakes for everyone it seems...
