Not like this!” | Photo by Alexander Hassenstein/Getty Images Who showed up well — or poorly — in the Bavarians’ latest cup exit? Never a dull DFB-Pokal night, is there?Bayern Munich vs. Bayer Leverkusen was not a showcase for quality but it did have lots of drama. As for Leverkusen, and red-hot coaching prospect Xabi Alonso...they probably needed this result. It has been a tough season. FC Bayern München v Bayer 04 Leverkusen - DFB Cup: Round of 16 Joshua Kimmich looks on in frustration after Bayern Munich suffer a 1-0 defeat to Bayer Leverkusen in the DFB Pokal round of 16 at the Allianz Arena. | Photo by Alexander Hassenstein/Getty Images The better team doesn’t always win but a loss is a loss nonetheless. Bayern Munich were eager to make a deep push into the DFB-Pokal for the first time since the 2019/2020 season — when they trumped Bayer Leverkusen 4-2 to win the competition. However, this time around it was Die Werkself that had the last laugh, ultimately sending Bayern Munich packing after a 1-0 triumph in the Round of 16 at the Allianz Arena. While the result is unchallengeable, Bayern midfielder Joshua Kimmich feels his side were hard done by, despite going one man down after Manuel Neuer’s 17th minute red card.“The better team doesn’t always win. Anyone who watched the game has to have sympathy for us and the way we played today,” Kimmich said after the match in comments captured by @iMiaSanMia. “Considering the opponent, today was our best performance of the season. The first title is gone, which hurts and is annoying. When I look at the results in the top games, it’s sobering. But I still think we are on the right path.” Kimmich may have a point as Bayern managed to dominate possession and outshoot Xabi Alonso’s Leverkusen while playing majority of the game with ten men. Although, possession means nothing if it doesn’t generate quality scoring chances, which in turn means nothing if you can’t put the ball in the back of the net. Neither of which Bayern were successful with against last season’s Bundesliga champions.A bitter loss to swallow for Bayern but as we’ve seen before with Kompany’s side, a tough defeat is often the catalyst for growth and improvement. Let us hope that’s the case once again. Looking for more thoughts and analysis on Bayern Munich’s shocking 1-0 loss to Bayer Leverkusen in the DFB-Pokal? Then you came to the right place. FC Bayern München v Bayer 04 Leverkusen - DFB Cup: Round of 16 Bayern Munich head coach, Vincent Kompany, addresses the press ahead of Bayern Munich’s DFB Poakl round of 16 clash against Bayer Leverkusen at the Allianz Arena. | Photo by S. Mellar/FC Bayern via Getty Images A small positive from a largely disappointing result. Bayern Munich has suffered yet another early DFB-Pokal exit, this time a 1-0 defeat in the round of 16 at the hands of defending Bundesliga champions and title rivals, Bayer Leverkusen. While being knocked out of a competition for the first time in the 2024/25 season is undoubtedly disappointing, Bayern manager Vincent Kompany still managed to find some positive takeaways from the game.“Of course it’s so bitter that we were eliminated,” Kompany said after the match in comments captured by @iMiaSanMia. “The red card influenced the game, but the boys did very well and showed character. I played in so many games with a man down and know how tough it is. We created chances with a man down but unfortunately couldn’t score. The fans gave us an extra push and were the extra man. We have to differentiate between the fact we’re out and the fact the boys did very well. I can’t blame anyone.”The result really did seem to hinge on Manuel Neuer’s red card, which is unfortunate. With all eleven players on the pitch, there could have been a very different result. Even without, Bayern had chances. The response from the players, despite being a man down, reflects a positive attitude from the players. A small, but welcome positive in the wake of a bitter result. One can only hope that Kompany and Bayern can continue to improve and make a deep run into next year’s Pokal. FC Bayern München v Paris Saint-Germain - UEFA Champions League 2024/25 League Phase MD5 Photo by Ulrik Pedersen/NurPhoto via Getty Images Bayern Munich are happy with Coman, but should they be? It has been reported by Sky Sport journalist Kerry Hau (via @iMiaSanMia) that Vincent Kompany and his staff are pleased with Kingsley Coman’s performances thus far this season. Bayern Munich might look to extend the French winger who was earlier believed to be a potential departure in January. It seems as though both parties are satisfactory with the arrangement and Coman plans to reassess the situation in the summer. Not everyone agrees with Coman’s performance this season though.Vincent Kompany and his staff are happy with Kingsley Coman's performances this season. Contract… pic.twitter.com/E6YmrjWehi— Bayern & Germany (@iMiaSanMia) December 2, 2024Vincent Kompany and his staff are happy with Kingsley Coman’s performances this season. After he was close to leaving the club last summer, the Frenchman is now happy under Kompany and is not planning a January move. Coman wants to reassess his situation in the summer. Contract runs until 2027.BFW AnalysisWhile Coman is a proven dribbler and progressive player, the statistics are clear — Coman is no better than the average winger at scoring or assisting. It isn’t always fair to be overly critical, but when a Bayern Munich winger (who plays with some of the best talent in the world each week) is proven to be contributing to less goals than the average winger across the Top 5 leagues, there is no more reason for patience. It is important to keep in mind that Coman has not registered a single goal contribution this season so far against a team in the top eight of the Bundesliga (as of Matchday 12). Some would say he is in form, considering he didn’t score a single goal against a top-half Bundesliga side last season. He did score in two matches, against Mainz 05 and Freiburg, respectively. This begs the question, should the Bayern Munich staff be happy with the French winger? Is he just cursed and unlucky to not score or assist more? Or does his movement with the ball give armor beyond necessary to otherwise poor play? Fans seem to either think he is the savior of Bayern Munich or its eternal curse.Looking for an extended breakdown of Bayern Munich’s DFB-Pokal showdown with Bayer Leverkusen? FC Bayern München v Bayer 04 Leverkusen - Bundesliga Photo by Christina Pahnke - sampics/Getty Images Revenge is a dish best served on a pitch. In his short yet successful tenure as manager at Bayer Leverkusen, Xabi Alonso has never lost to his former club, Bayern Munich. His counterpart, Vincent Kompany, has never been defeated by a German club during his managerial career.Bayern has only scored multiple goals once in its last five matches, but the defense has been stellar in keeping opponents off the board. Stuttgart is the only German club to shut out Leverkusen this season.Regardless of today’s result, an impressive streak or two will be broken. Prediction: Bayern Munich wins 2-1. CA Osasuna v Villarreal CF - La Liga EA Sports Photo by Juan Manuel Serrano Arce/Getty Images The Spaniard could be out for a long time... Bayern Munich recently loaned out Bryan Zaragoza, a massive Spanish talent who could potentially be a major addition to the Bayern squad, to Osasuna FC. However, a few months before his expected return to Munich, the Spaniard suffered an injury.According to a report captured by @iMiaSanMia, Zaragoza suffered a metatarsal fracture, that is, a fracture to a bone in the foot. The injury itself is not too serious, however, the club expects Zaragoza to be on the sidelines for a long time. The expected recovery time is around six-to-eight weeks, which is already very long, but most players recover from an injury like this in around three months. Considering that Osasuna is putting the effort to break into the European tournament spots on the La Liga table, this particular injury is definitely going to set them back. After recent comments from Bryan Zaragoza’s agent on Thomas Tuchel and the problems Bryan faced at Bayern, it’s almost as if it was a hit was ordered by the German coach (only kidding...maybe).Looking for an extended breakdown of Bayern Munich’s DFB-Pokal showdown with Bayer Leverkusen? FC Bayern München v Bayer 04 Leverkusen - DFB Cup: Round of 16 Photo by Daniel Kopatsch/Getty Images Just like that, the Bavarians are out. Die Folgen: Bayern’s 1-0 loss to Leverkusen (Bavarian Football Works)Bayern Munich’s DFB-Pokal season is over. After an untimely red card, Bayern Munich had to play more than 75% of the game down a man, which was less than ideal against a squad like Bayer Leverkusen (yes, even an injured and not-quite-as-good-as-last-season version of Die Werkself). Here are some quick hitters on Bayern Munich’s 1-0 defeat: As always, let’s take a look at the starting XI:
How we line-up for #FCBB04 #FCBayern #MiaSanMia | #DFBPokal pic.twitter.com/Gtbat06eRz— FC Bayern (@FCBayernEN) December 3, 2024This was...interesting. Without Thomas Müller, Serge Gnabry, or Mathy Tel as part of the XI, there were no clear candidate for the No. 9 position as everyone was discussing the lineup. Immediately, it looked as if Kompany was going to use a 4-2-2-2. However, before the match started, Kompany indicated that Michael Olise would be the No. 9. Odd, right? Anyway, it sort of functioned like a 4-2-4 as Bild had so kindly captured in a photo of Bayern Munich’s training plans from a few weeks back. Aside of the attacking group, everything else was as expected. Konrad Laimer over Raphaël Guerreiro and Sacha Boey at right-back might have surprised some after Laimer got torched by Borussia Dortmund’s Jamie Gittens for a goal on Saturday, but Boey has barely played and Guerreiro did not look great during his appearance at right-back. Much like we saw in the first meeting between the two teams, Bayern Munich was the aggressor and Bayer Leverkusen looked apprehensive and reluctant to engage. In the 11th minute, a really shaky sequence from Dayot Upamecano and Kim Min-jae landed ultimately with the ball on the foot of Florian Wirtz in shooting range, but the phenom could not hook his shot attempt in between the sticks and it went wide. Then in the 13th minute, Edmond Tapsoba definitely put a forearm to the face of Olise after an initial foul was called on him for hauling down the Bayern Munich attacker. The Bayer Leverkusen defender’s extra shove caught the attention of Upamecano, who came over to defend his teammate. Both Upamecano and Tabsoba were issued yellow cards. There seems to be a bit of animosity between the squads, which did heighten the intensity. Then...it happened. Manuel Neuer, after a stretch of solid play, got way too aggressive with a challenge just outside the box and threw a shoulder into Jeremie Frimpong that would have made Cooper DeJean proud. Unfortunately for Bayern Munich, it resulted in a red card and Daniel Peretz got thrown directly into the fire!To compensate, Leroy Sané was taken off in favor of Peretz and all of a sudden, whoever was playing striker did not matter much anymore. I know that no one wants to criticize a legend, but that very reckless and careless from Neuer. There was no other outcome that was going to happen except a red card. Surprisingly, Bayern Munich did fairly well playing down a man, but it felt like Bayer Leverkusen was just treading water in preparation for an all-out attacking assault in the second half. Funny enough, that never really happened — at least not consistently. You could really argue that Bayern Munich was the better team.In the second minute of added time for the first half, Goretzka threaded a perfect ball to Laimer who was streaking down the middle, but Granit Xhaka made an outstanding tackle on the ball to snuff out the threat. Later, Kim sent a header wide that he would absolutely like to have back. Xabi Alonso brought in Patrik Schick for Robert Andrich to start the second half. In playing up a man, Alonso knew he needed to ditch his striker-less system. In the 51st minute, Frimpong sent in a nice cutback-cross to Wirtz, who — again —sent his attempt wide. There was an interesting dynamic to the game in the second half, where Bayern Munich was more organized, focused, and energetic than Bayer Leverkusen.…
FC Bayern München v Bayer 04 Leverkusen - DFB Cup: Round of 16 Photo by Stefan Matzke - sampics/Getty Images The legendary keeper made a shocking error, and took full responsibility. Manuel Neuer has had a legendary career. High risks, hijinks, you name it — the OG sweeper-keeper redefined the position and has always gotten away with the impossible. Until now.In the first half of Bayern Munich’s 0-1 DFB-Pokal defeat to Bayer Leverkusen, Neuer made a critical error in judgment. Leverkusen had been testing Bayern with long balls since the opening whistle — using the pace of Jeremie Frimpong, in particular, to challenge Bayern’s back line. And when center-back Jonathan Tah lined up to lob another one over the top, Neuer decided to help his guys out.— FC Bayern (@miasanmia.bsky.social) 2024-12-03T20:05:36.925ZHe was never getting there in time, though. With his own teammates, Konrad Laimer and Dayot Upamecano already bracketing the Leverkusen speedster, Neuer lunged for a header and instead bundled broad-shouldered into Frimpong. It was a straight red — and the very first sending off of his career.“I didn’t try to hurt him, I tried to get the ball but didn’t get there in time,” Neuer explained after the match in comments captured by @iMiaSanMia. “I was hoping he would be in an offside position. I can’t change it now. It was a mistake and I have to accept it, unfortunately I have no other choice.”The mistake changed the course of the game — only 17 minutes old at that point. And with Bayern going down eventually in defeat, despite a brave fight back, the Bayern captain could only stand in front of the cameras afterward and take the heat upon himself.“It hurt us and I’m sorry,” he said.Manuel Neuer: "The red card decided the game. It hurts us and I'm sorry" [@MichelSchroeer] pic.twitter.com/9tncHHtLfT— Bayern & Germany (@iMiaSanMia) December 3, 2024“It’s definitely a big disappointment. It wasn’t easy after the red card. The boys tried everything and invested a lot, you can’t blame them. I apologized to the team,” he added.Bayern certainly did not make it easy for Leverkusen, and Neuer’s deputy, Daniel Peretz, had a solid performance in emergency relief. But for the veteran keeper, who built his career around backing himself to do the audacious and the outlandish, it was a cold hard lesson that he — even he — is not superhuman. But credit where credit is due. Neuer stepped up to the plate and took all the responsibility for the matter, taking to social media and talking to the media in the tense aftermath of a stinging defeat.Manuel Neuer on IG pic.twitter.com/2tg5Iw1AqD— Bayern & Germany (@iMiaSanMia) December 3, 2024And that is the stuff that real leaders are made of. ◆Looking for more thoughts and analysis on Bayern Munich’s shocking 1-0 loss to Bayer Leverkusen in the DFB-Pokal? FC Bayern München v Bayer 04 Leverkusen - DFB Cup: Round of 16 Photo by Alex Grimm/Getty Images Manuel Neuer’s early red card was too hard to overcome as Bayern Munich were eliminated in the DFB-Pokal. Bayern Munich yet again saw an early conclusion to their DFB-Pokal campaign. A trophy they have not won since the 2019-2020 season.Bayern Munich are desperate for a trophyAfter going trophyless in what seems like an eternity, Bayern Munich are down to just the Bundesliga and Champions League for possible trophies this season. Losing the Bundesliga last season and now the DFB-Pokal struggles are starting to add some serious pressure to the club.Shocker: Red cards make life difficultManuel Neuer’s early red card made life more difficult than necessary against Die Werkself. Going down to 10 men can be a challenge against any club, let alone Xabi Alonso’s side. Still, what an effort Bayern Munich put forth while down a man for so long. Clearly, something Vincent Kompany practiced with the team.Florian Wirtz is needed at Bayern MunichSince returning from almost a year injured in his early career, Wirtz has wasted no match without making his mark. The 21-year-old is undoubtedly one of the best talents of this generation and is proven to excel alongside Bayern’s Jamal Musiala. Outside of Musiala and Kane, the rest of the Bayern attack is simply not doing enough at the moment. If Bayern can only make one signing for the next three years, it should be him.No Kane, No PartyAs just stated, the attack is simply not doing enough. Without Musiala and Kane, fans can only imagine where Bayern Munich would be at the moment. It seems as though only a handful of players are Bayern quality at the moment. What did you think about the match? Let us know in the comments below!

FC Bayern München v Bayer 04 Leverkusen - DFB Cup: Round of 16 Photo by Alex Grimm/Getty Images The match turned ugly very quickly...and didn’t finish much better for the Bavarians. Jersey Swap: Jonathan TahTah was an imposing and imperious presence at the back for Leverkusen. With Germany national team coach Julian Nagelsmann — and maybe the Bayern Munich scouts — watching, Tah turned in a rock-solid performance, and he needed to. Bayern easily could have gotten on the scoreboard without his interventions, including on Jamal Musiala and Serge Gnabry in moments of real danger in the second half. Tah had every right to pump his chest and celebrate after every one of his stops.Long balls to test the spaces Bayern left behind were also a key part of the Leverkusen game plan, and Tah’s distribution stats — 10 long passes attempted, seven completed, per sofascore — stood out as well. And yes. He made that pass. The one that led to this: Neuer collides with Frimpong Photo by MICHAELA STACHE/AFP via Getty Images Der Kaiser: Daniel PeretzPeretz probably was not expecting to play today. Manuel Neuer, who had never been sent off in his entire career, had a moment of real madness in just the 17th minute — and the young Israeli keeper was thrust into action.Peretz was tested early by an aggressive Leverkusen press — and again by several moments where Die Werkself managed to get in behind the Bayern lines. Peretz stood up to the task, staying composed, making saves, and keeping his team in the game. His 32nd minute save on Jeremie Frimpong from close range showed his calm in a dire situation, and so did his second half long boot towards Serge Gnabry — made under duress — flashed his abilities in distribution, even if he is not by any stretch the OG sweeper-keeper GOAT.Does Bayern have something here? Well, Neuer is only suspended for the Pokal, which Bayern is now out of. But this was a nice showing for the backup keeper, who needs a lot more seasoning to take his next steps. Can Bayern get any loan interest in January?Fußballgott: Konrad LaimerWhat a beast. Laimer has a motor that don’t quit and Bayern needed all of that, especially after Manuel Neuer got himself sent off.Laimer had the battle of the night against Leverkusen speedster Jeremie Frimpong, whom Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso shifted from the right to the left flank early in the match to try to exploit him. But the Austrian more than held his own in what quickly became a very physical contest.Going forward, Laimer was everywhere. Getting high up the pitch, playing teammates in behind, running into the box. The man was indefatigable, and his presence all over the pitch earns him a spot in the midfield awards. Two-way everything player today.Honorable mention: Aleksandar Pavlović. The youngster was subbed on at the 73rd minute mark, not really enough time to influence the game. But you could see the difference a second crisp distributor makes once he got on the ball. More of this soon, please!Der Bomber: Jamal MusialaBayern’s dynamo could not get on the scoresheet today but it was not for lack of trying. Musiala started the game having to wear multiple hats — attacking midfielder, second striker behind Michael Olise’s false nine, second No. 6 when he had to drop deep to assist build-up. That only compounded once Bayern went down to ten men, and Musiala did it all. Dribbling, driving, threading passes...unfortunately, with no glory to show for it.Still, Musiala registered three key passes and was constantly fouled. His energy and drive were key to Bayern maintaining their momentum going forward even with a numerical disadvantage.Coman was a good presence on that left flank. But the man needs to stop crossing to the moon.Meister of the Match: Joshua KimmichKimmich did his job, as he can always be counted on to do. The Bayern metronome, Kimmich’s role coordinating and quarterbacking the Bayern build-up became even more important once Neuer was out. Fortunately for Bayern, he did it exceptionally well and in the rare moments of lapses…

Borussia Dortmund v FC Bayern München - Bundesliga Photo by S. Mellar/FC Bayern via Getty Images Sané could possibly face punishment after the DFB review, which wouldn’t be the first time he’s been found guilty of something like this. Der Klassiker is a fixture in German football that never has its shortage of drama and this season’s first installment of the affair between Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich lived up to the billing. Goals from Jamie Gittens and Jamal Musiala saw the match end in a 1-1 draw at Signal Iduna Park, but there were plenty of talking points aside from the goals scored, including the 18 fouls committed and pair of yellow cards each side was shown.Bayern might have come away with a vital point after a spirited second-half fight back, but there could yet be punishment doled out for an incident involving Leroy Sané and Dortmund’s Pascal Groß. During the second half of play, there was an attacking sequence for Bayern during which Sané elbowed Groß as a result of the Dortmund midfielder marking him closely, jostling for position. Groß did not go down, but he did briefly hold his face after taking the hit from Sané.Per information from Bild (via @iMiaSanMia) a DFB control committee is now reviewing the incident from the match to determine if there will be any punishment sent in the direction of Sané. This is apparently a process that is taking place before the DFB would decide on if a thorough, comprehensive investigation is required to decide what retrospective punishment the player should receive. In the view of referee expert Thorsten Kinhöfer, VAR should have instructed the on-field officials to take a closer look at the incident during the match. He feels that if there was a more dramatic reaction from Groß, it would have prompted a closer look, which very well might have resulted in Sané being given his marching orders. “If Groß lets himself fall and holds his face, as most players do these days, it will probably be considered assault. Even if he doesn’t hit him fully - Sané swings, and that’s a blow. That then clearly goes in the direction of assault,” Kinhöfer explained to Bild (via t-online). He is rather confident from the video evidence that it was not a reflexive movement and reaction from Sané. Borussia Dortmund v FC Bayern München - Bundesliga Photo by Lukas Schulze/Bundesliga/Bundesliga Collection via Getty Images For Sané, if he does get retrospective punishment, it would not be the first time in recent memory this has happened. He was banned for several matches with the German national team after he shoved Austria’s Philipp Mwene to the ground in a 2-0 friendly loss in November 2023. Punishment for the incident in the Dortmund match could also mean that he does not play again until 2025 if the punishment does come in the form of match bans across the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal.
