🇬🇧 Titan’s haze captured in Cassini photo

n this image separate and distinct layers of haze can clearly be seen in the upper atmosphere of the only moon in our solar system to have an appreciable atmosphere. Titan is also the ringed planet’s largest natural satellite.

Titan is, in some ways, like a young Earth. However, whereas our world (now) has a Nitrogen-Oxygen atmosphere, Titan has a Nitrogen-Methane atmosphere.

This natural-color image is how one would see the moon should they be in orbit above the world in a spacecraft and was taken on March 31, 2005. Cassini snapped the picture from an altitude of some 20,556 miles (33,083 kilometers). It was taken looking toward Titan’s north pole from the night side of Titan.

A sliver of the moon’s sunlit side can be seen in this image (to the right).

🇬🇧 Life Is Possible On Trappist-1 Exoplanets

In all the cosmos there is only one planet known to harbor life. While Earth is special to us, there are countless similar worlds orbiting other stars. Since life arose early in Earth's history, it seems likely that life could arise on other potentially habitable planets. But as we learn of both exoplanets and the history of life on Earth, we've found that things are a bit more complicated.
In astronomy, "potentially habitable" simply means that the orbit of an exoplanet places it in a particular range of distance from its star. Close enough that its water wouldn't deep freeze into a perpetual solid, and far enough away that its water doesn't boil away leaving a dry husk of a world. Earth, as you would expect, lies within the habitable zone of the Sun.

But there are other things that make Earth so friendly to life. For one, our Sun is a stable main sequence star, so Earth has received a steady source of light and heat for billions of years. Earth also has a large moon, and the gravitational tug between the Earth and Moon creates tidal heating in Earth's interior, producing volcanoes and other geologic activity that can bring rich material from the interior to Earth's surface. In the outer solar system, the large moons of Jupiter experience similar tidal forces, warming their water to a liquid underneath their surface. Moons such as Europa might harbor life because of this tidal heating.

Em todo o universo, só existe um planeta conhecido capaz de abrigar a vida. Enquanto a Terra é especial para nós, existe um número incontável de mundos similares orbitando outras estrelas. Já que a vida emergiu no início da história da Terra, parece provável que a vida pudesse emergir também em outros planetas potencialmente habitáveis. Mas como nós aprendemos tanto com os exoplanetas como com a própria história da vida na Terra, as coisas são um pouco mais complicadas que isso. Em astronomia, “potencialmente habitável”, simplesmente significa que a órbita de um exoplaneta está numa distância particular da sua estrela. Perto o suficiente para que a água não congele, e longe o suficiente para que a água não evapore. A Terra, obviamente se encontra bem no meio da chamada zona habitável do Sol.

Mas existem outras coisas que fazem com que a Terra seja amigável para a vida. Por exemplo, o nosso Sol, é uma estrela estável que está na sequência principal, assim a Terra tem uma fonte de luz e calor constante por bilhões de anos. 🇬🇧 Jupiter’s Stormy North

This color-enhanced image was taken on Dec. 16, 2017 at 9:47 a.m. PST (12:47 p.m. EST), as Juno performed its tenth close flyby of Jupiter. At the time the image was taken, the spacecraft was about 5,600 miles (8,787 kilometers) from the tops of the clouds of the planet at a latitude of 38.4 degrees north.
Citizen scientist Björn Jónsson processed this image using data from the JunoCam imager. This image has been processed from the raw JunoCam framelets by removing the effects of global illumination. Jónsson then increased the contrast and color and sharpened smallscale features. The image has also been cropped.

While at first glance the view may appear to be in Jupiter’s south, the raw source images were obtained when Juno was above the planet’s northern hemisphere looking south, potentially causing a sense of disorientation to the viewer. The geometry of the scene can be explored using the time of the image and the Juno mission module of NASA’s Eyes on the Solar System.

🇧🇷 As Tempestades da Região Norte de Júpiter

Essa imagem que teve suas cores realçadas, foi feita no dia 16 de Dezembro de 2017, às 15:47, hora de Brasília, quando a sonda Juno realizava seu décimo sobrevoo por Júpiter. No momento da imagem, a sonda estava a 8787 quilômetros de distância do topo das nuvens do planeta na latitude de 38.4 graus norte. A imagem mostra o cinturão polar norte de Júpiter.
O cientista cidadão Björn Jónsson processou essa imagem usando dados obtidos pela JunoCam. Essa imagem foi processada a partir dos frames brutos da JunoCam removendo os efeitos de iluminação global. Jónsson então aumentou o contraste e a cor de feições de pequena escala. A imagem também foi cropada.

Num primeiro olhar, a imagem parece ser do sul de Júpiter, as imagens brutas foram obtidas quando a sonda estava sobre o hemisfério norte do planeta, olhando para o sul, potencilamente causando o sentido de desorientação de quem está observando. A geometria da cena pode ser explorada usando o momento em que a imagem foi feita e onde estava a sonda Juno, usando para isso o aplicativo da NASA, chamado de Eyes on the Solar System.

🇬🇧 Black Hole Spin Turns-up the Radio

Astronomers just found a new way to turn up the radio: never mind spinning the volume dial, try spinning a supermassive black hole!
The songs we hear playing on the radio are actually sound waves travelling from the device to our ears. But they are sent to the device by “radio waves”. Radio waves are a type of light that your eyes can’t see, not a type of sound.
Radio waves send music, pictures and data invisibly through the air. This is happening around us all the time, in thousands of different ways. Mobile phones, Wi-Fi hotspots and thousands of other wireless technologies, all use radio waves to communicate.

In the artist’s drawing above, a supermassive black hole is swallowing material. Before disappearing forever, the material from the star is accelerated to very high speeds around the black hole. This fast-moving material shoots out huge beams of radio waves into space.

Os astrónomos acabam de descobrir uma nova forma de subir o volume do rádio: nada de rodar o botão - em vez disso, põe-se um buraco negro supermaciço a girar!
As músicas que ouvimos na rádio são na realidade ondas sonoras que viajam do aparelho até aos nossos ouvidos. Mas chegam ao aparelho graças a ondas de rádio. Estas são um tipo de luz (radiação) que os nossos olhos não conseguem captar, e não um tipo de som.

Na ilustração artística vemos um buraco negro supermaciço a consumir uma estrela. Antes de desaparecer para sempre, a matéria estelar é acelerada até altíssimas velocidades em torno do buraco negro. Este material em rápido movimento dispara enormes feixes de ondas de rádio para o espaço. Mas nem todos os buracos negros supermaciços emitem a mesma quantidade de ondas de rádio. 🇬🇧 The long and short of it: Iron-rich stars host shorter-period planets

Astronomers with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) have learned that the chemical composition of a star can exert unexpected influence on its planetary system — a discovery made possible by an ongoing SDSS survey of stars seen by NASA’s Kepler spacecraft, and one that promises to expand our understanding of how extrasolar planets form and evolve.

The team presented their results today at the American Astronomical Society (AAS) meeting in National Harbor, Maryland. Using SDSS data, they found that stars with higher concentrations of iron tend to host planets that orbit quite close to their host star — often with orbital periods of less than about eight days — while stars with less iron tend to host planets with longer periods that are more distant from their host star. 🇧🇷 Estrelas ricas em ferro hospedam planetas de período mais curto

Os astrónomos descobriram que a composição química de uma estrela pode exercer uma influência inesperada no seu sistema planetário. A descoberta foi possível graças ao levantamento astronómico contínuo SDSS (Sloan Digital Sky Survey) das estrelas observadas pela missão Kepler, da NASA, levantamento que promete levar mais longe o nosso conhecimento sobre a formação e evolução dos planetas extrassolares.

Usando dados do SDSS, a equipa descobriu que as estrelas com maiores concentrações de ferro tendem a hospedar planetas que as orbitam bastante perto – muitas vezes com períodos orbitais inferiores a oito dias; por outro lado, as estrelas com menos ferro tendem a hospedar planetas com períodos mais longos e com órbitas mais distantes. Uma investigação mais aprofundada sobre este efeito pode ajudar a compreender toda uma variedade de sistemas planetários extrassolares na Galáxia, e lançar alguma luz sobre o posicionamento dos planetas nesses sistemas.

🇬🇧 Clouds in the LMC

An alluring sight in southern skies, the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) is seen in this deep and detailed telescopic mosaic. Recorded with broadband and narrowband filters, the scene spans some 5 degrees or 10 full moons. The narrowband filters are designed to transmit only light emitted by hydrogen, and oxygen atoms. Ionized by energetic starlight, the atoms emit their characteristic light as electrons are recaptured and the atoms transition to a lower energy state. As a result, in this image the LMC seems covered with its own clouds of ionized gas surrounding its massive, young stars. Sculpted by the strong stellar winds and ultraviolet radiation, the glowing clouds, dominated by emission from hydrogen, are known as H II (ionized hydrogen) regions. Itself composed of many overlapping H II regions, the Tarantula Nebula is the large star forming region at the left. The largest satellite of our Milky Way Galaxy, the LMC is about 15,000 light-years across and lies a mere 160,000 light-years away toward the constellation Dorado.

🇧🇷 As nuvens de Hidrogênio ionizado da grande nuvem de Magalhães

A imagem abaixo mostra uma visão fascinante do céu do hemisfério sul do planeta Terra, com a Grande Nuvem de Magalhães, ou LMC, sendo mostrada num belo mosaico obtido através de imagens feitas por um telescópio. Para criar esse mosaico foram usadas imagens obtidas com filtros de banda larga e estreita e o mosaico final se espalha por cerca de 5 graus, o equivalente 10 Luas Cheias. Os filtros de banda estreita são desenhados para transmitir somente a luz emitida pelos átomos de hidrogênio e oxigênio. Os átomos são ionizados pela luz energética das estrelas e emitem sua luz característica à medida que os elétrons são recapturados e os átomos são então transpostos para um estado de menor energia. Como resultado de todo esse processo, nessa imagem da LMC é possível ver muitas nuvens de gás ionizado ao redor de estrelas jovens e massivas. Esculpidas pelos fortes ventos estelares e pela radiação ultravioleta, as nuvens brilhantes, são dominadas pela emissão de hidrogênio, conhecido como regiões H II, de hidrogênio ionizado. Composta por muitas regiões H II sobrepostas, a Nebulosa da Tarântula é a grande região de formação de estrelas observada na parte esquerda da imagem. Considerada a maior galáxia satélite da Via Láctea, a LMC, tem cerca de 15 mil anos-luz de diâmetro e localiza-se a cerca de 160 mil anos-luz de distância da Terra, na direção da constelação de Dorado.

🇬🇧 Famous Fornax Galaxy

Fornax A is a galaxy with a very active black hole in its core that is spraying radio waves out into enormous jets. Here, the white glow in the center is the visible galaxy NGC 1316 that you can see through the constellation of Fornax. Notice the wee spiral galaxy above it? These two galaxies are merging, and as gas and dust are stripped out of the small galaxy and poured into the center of NGC 1316, the black hole nestled there spins it up. How do we know this? The huge radio lobes to either side of this merger are the telltale signs that a black hole is being fed more than it can handle. These are the billowing ends of powerful jets shooting out spun-up, escaped material far into space.

🇧🇷 A Famosa Galáxia Fornax A

Fornax A é uma galáxia que tem no seu centro um buraco negro muito ativo que está expelindo ondas de rádio através de poderosos e enormes jatos. Nessa imagem, o brilho branco que se vê no centro é a galáxia visível NGC 1316, que você pode ver na constelação de Fornax. Note que logo acima dela tem uma pequena galáxia espiral. Essas duas galáxias estão em processo de fusão, e o gás e a poeira da pequena galáxia está sendo arrancado e alimentando o centro da NGC 1316, ou seja, alimentando o seu buraco negro central. E como sabemos disso? Sabemos disso, porque nas ondas de radio é possível ver os enormes lóbulos um de cada lado das galáxias em fusão, esses lóbulos em ondas de rádio são sinais de que o buraco negro central da NGC 1316 está sendo alimentado de forma constante. Os lóbulos são as partes terminais dos jatos de material que está sendo expelido pela galáxia. Devido à presença desses enormes lóbulos de ondas de rádio, a NGC 1316, também conhecida como Fornax A, é uma galáxia lenticular e é classificada como uma rádio galáxia. Ela está localizada a aproximadamente 70 milhões de anos-luz de distância da Terra, e a galáxia menor que está sendo fundida com ela é a NGC 1317.
