A Montreal program is saving people from homelessness — with the help of a cash 'boost'

A program run by a Montreal-based charity is trying to help Canadians avoid homelessness at an average cost of $11,000 per person. That's money well spent, according to Samuel Watts. "What we're doing is we're trying to capture and accompany people before they end up in the depths of homelessness," said Watts, CEO of Welcome Hall Mission.

The program, called Rapid Entry to Housing, is focused on helping Montrealers who need what Watts called a cash "boost" to get them into a home and avoid homelessness.

Pro-Palestinian student protesters set up camp at U of T

Pro-Palestinian protesters moved onto a greenspace in the heart of the University of Toronto's downtown campus Thursday, as the Israel-Hamas war nears its seven-month mark.

The group erected dozens of tents overnight in the recently renovated King's College Circle. The area was previously fenced off in anticipation of convocation ceremonies set to take place in about a month, according to the university.

The move comes as students at universities throughout North America have established their own protest encampments to demand an end to the ongoing war in Gaza.

In a statement, student protestors at U of T said they are calling on the post-secondary institution to reveal a complete list of its endowment's investments and divest from assets that "sustain Israeli apartheid, occupation and illegal settlement of Palestine." They also demanded the school cut ties with Israeli academic institutions that operate within the occupied West Bank.

Police begin searching Saskatoon landfill in case of woman missing since 2020

Police have initiated a search of the Saskatoon landfill as part of the investigation into the 2020 disappearance of 22-year-old Mackenzie Lee Trottier. The search is expected to last up to 33 days and will focus on a specific area of the landfill. Excavators have cleared the "overburden" above the designated search area, approximately 930 cubic meters in total. Police obtained GPS tracking coordinates from garbage trucks involved in the investigation, allowing them to identify a "layer of interest" for investigation. Teams of 14 officers, along with specially trained dogs for finding human remains, will work diligently to sift through the landfill items in the designated area. The process is described as meticulous and emotionally draining. Mackenzie Trottier's father expressed the difficulty of the situation, emphasizing the emotional toll and extensive effort involved in the search.

Woman acquitted of historical sex offence against teen stepson

An Ontario woman has been acquitted of a sex crime against her teen stepson in Ottawa 40 years ago because the judge couldn't be sure that Canadians in the 1980s would have found it criminally immoral.

It's a rare case because a woman stands accused, leaving the judge in a tough spot with little case law to lean on, according to a law professor who specializes in sexual offences.

Infant, grandparents among 4 killed in Highway 401 crash

Two grandparents and their infant grandchild were among four people killed in a fiery crash east of Toronto on Monday, after police pursued a robbery suspect driving the wrong way on Highway 401, Ontario's police watchdog says.

Monica Hudon, spokesperson for the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), said the robbery suspect was also killed in the collision, which involved at least six vehicles.

All four people were pronounced dead at the scene on Highway 401 in Whitby, about 50 kilometres east of Toronto, Hudon said. Another person was taken to hospital with significant injuries, she added.

The pursuit began at an LCBO location in nearby Clarington, when an off-duty officer reported an attempted theft to Durham Regional Police at around 7:50 p.m. ET.

Pro-Palestinian encampment on McGill campus grows on 3rd day

University officials at McGill University reported a significant increase in the number of tents at a pro-Palestinian encampment on campus, with the encampment tripling in size since Saturday. The protesters, who set up approximately 20 tents, aim to stay on the university's lower field indefinitely as part of a movement urging universities to divest from companies with ties to Israel. McGill officials stated that many of the protesters are not members of the university community and alleged that some engaged in antisemitic language and intimidating behavior, prompting condemnation and an investigation. Despite the allegations, protesters, including McGill students and supporters from other universities, maintain their presence to voice their opposition to investments in companies involved in weapon manufacturing for Israel. The protest has been described as peaceful, with support from various groups, although concerns about increased police presence on campus have been raised.

'I'm not alone': Sixties Scoop survivors gather in Winnipeg to reconnect, heal

It's been a lifetime since Leticia Racine was taken from her home and placed into foster care, but she still remembers what it felt like to not know where she belonged.

"It was about identity, I didn't know who I was," said Racine, who was born in Portage la Prairie, Man., in 1976 and was taken into foster care six weeks later.

Racine was among hundreds of Sixties Scoop survivors who attended a Winnipeg conference on Sunday to share their stories, reconnect with their communities and access support.

The event, hosted by the Southern Chiefs' Organization and the Anish Corporation — which promotes health, wellness and emotional support for Indigenous peoples — is welcoming survivors from across Canada and from the U.S.

Rare Ojibwe spirit horse birth sparks excitement at Canadian farm

An Ottawa farm is celebrating a rare event: a second foal has been born at the Mädahòki Farm, expanding the farm's herd of rare Ojibwe spirit horses.

Most horse breeds register tens of thousands or even a hundred thousand new births a year, but the Ojibwe Horse Society gets excited if there are a dozen foals born in a year. It's estimated fewer than 200 of the ponies exist across the world today, following a dramatic decline in the 1970s.

Alberta wants more hydrogen vehicles. Experts say fuel infrastructure needs to come with them

Companies are interested in hydrogen as a way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in commercial transportation, but there are still challenges to overcome before more vehicles can hit the roads in Alberta. Currently, Edmonton and Strathcona County have one hydrogen bus each as part of a pilot project, and a hydrogen fuel cell electric truck has completed a test run between Edmonton and Calgary. However, industry officials say there is still work to be done to convince big companies to adopt hydrogen for their fleets. They want assurance that there are mechanics, infrastructure, and fuel supply available to support their vehicles in the region.

Plans for $2.4B carbon capture and storage project near Edmonton have been cancelled

Capital Power has abandoned its plans for a $2.4-billion carbon capture and storage project at its Genesee power plant due to financial impracticality, adding to a series of unsuccessful carbon capture ventures. This highlights doubts about the technology despite significant government investment. Federal Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault emphasized that while carbon capture remains a viable emissions reduction method, it is not a panacea for climate change. He urged industry to invest more in these projects, stressing that the government cannot fully fund all of them. Alberta Utilities Minister Nathan Neudorf expressed disappointment in the federal government's lack of support for carbon capture initiatives, emphasizing the need for realistic pathways to meet emissions targets. Capital Power, committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2045, stated that although the Genesee project was technically feasible, it was not economically viable. CEO Avik Dey suggested that advancements in technology and cost reduction could make such projects feasible in the future. Alberta's electricity grid, heavily reliant on natural gas, may require a combination of renewables, small modular nuclear reactors, and carbon capture to reduce emissions. In January, Capital Power announced plans to explore small modular nuclear reactor development with Ontario Power Generation to power Alberta's grid.

Poilievre hints to police he would use notwithstanding clause to change laws

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre has expressed his intention to use "whatever tools the Constitution allows" to enact stricter criminal laws if his party wins the next government. He addressed the Canadian Police Association, promising measures like tougher bail requirements and restrictions on convicted murderers transferring out of maximum security prisons, claiming all proposals are constitutional and would be made so using available tools. Although not explicitly stated, Poilievre's past remarks suggest he may use the notwithstanding clause to overturn Supreme Court decisions, such as one regarding parole ineligibility for multiple first-degree murderers. This clause allows Canadian parliaments to override certain portions of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms for five-year terms without judicial review.

Manitoba war vet's request for D-DAY licence plate twice rejected by MPI before finally getting OK'd

Timothy Yakabowich sought to obtain a personalized "D-DAY" license plate as a tribute to his father, a WWII veteran who served on Juno Beach during the invasion on June 6, 1944. Despite his intentions to honor his father and commemorate veterans, Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI) initially denied his request twice, citing concerns of the plate being considered violent or political. However, after a battle with MPI, Yakabowich's application was finally approved this week. Yakabowich, a retired veteran himself, expressed his desire for the plate to recognize both past and current veterans, as well as to pay homage to his father's involvement in the operation.

B.C. man captures video of 2 bear cubs waking from winter slumber

A winter walk paid off months later for a Prince George, B.C., family who captured footage of a family of bears waking up from hibernation.

Serge Wolf lives on a rural property with his wife and two children in the north-central B.C. city, about 500 kilometres north of Vancouver.

Wolf and his family were hiking through the woods in January when his four-year-old daughter noticed a hole in the ground.

"I thought immediately, well, it has to be a den," Wolf said.

His suspicions were confirmed when he heard a slight whining noise coming from inside, prompting him to think that "those must be cubs."
