Troops arrive at the border to help with enforcement despite fewer migrant crossings

Apart from the thrum of traffic, it's a quiet afternoon in this town of roughly 6,000 along the southwest border where the Trump administration has deployed some 10,000 active-duty soldiers – a move that's part of the president's campaign promise to stop irregular crossings into the United States.

Presidio is in the Big Bend sector of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection – a stretch covering more than 500 miles of the Rio Grande, including a handful of other small towns and a national park too. Throughout this area, the Trump administration recently announced the deployment of some 500 active-duty soldiers. The Army says that these soldiers won't be arresting people suspected of being in the U.S. illegally, and instead, will offer "logistical support" to Border Patrol agents.

Authorities arrest suspect after fire at Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro's home

A man named Cody Balmer, 38, was taken into custody in connection with a suspected arson attack on Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro’s residence in Harrisburg, just hours after the family celebrated the start of Passover. No injuries were reported, and both Shapiro’s family and another family in the home were safely evacuated. Authorities plan to charge Balmer with serious offenses including attempted murder, terrorism, aggravated arson, and assault. Shapiro called the attack an assault not just on his family, but on the entire Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

US architects of original Iran nuclear deal say changed world poses challenges for talks

US officials are preparing for a meeting aimed at formulating a new nuclear deal with Iran, but those involved in structuring the previous agreement say the situation is fundamentally different from the first time talks took place.
In 2018, during his first term in office, President Donald Trump withdrew the US from a deal struck by former president Barack Obama's administration and world powers, which put limits on Iran's nuclear programme in exchange for sanctions relief. But shortly after returning to the White House this year, Mr Trump announced he had reached out to Iranian leadership about a new deal.

Smartphones and computers are now spared from Trump's reciprocal tariffs

The Trump administration has amended its list of imports that will be affected by sweeping global tariffs in order to exempt certain electronics, including smartphones and computers.

The updated guidance was published Friday night by U.S. Customs and Border Protection. The exemption will apply to President Trump's steep "reciprocal tariffs" imposed across dozens of countries, which have since been paused until early July as well as the 145% levies currently in place on China. That was the only country excluded from the reciprocal tariff pause. The exemption is effective for products that entered the U.S. or left warehouses starting on April 5. The White House issued a presidential memo about the exemption on Saturday.

Beijing slaps 125% tariffs on U.S. goods in latest U.S.-China trade escalation

China retaliated Friday to higher U.S. tariffs, slapping 125% levies on U.S. goods, but signaled it would apply no further measures in the future.

"If the U.S. continues to increase tariffs on Chinese exports, China will not respond," China's Ministry of Finance said in a statement announcing the new levies, in a sign that Chinese authorities see no real upside to any further tit-for-tat measures beyond these. "Given the current level of tariffs, U.S. goods exported to China are no longer market-viable," the statement added by way of explanation.

Suspect arrested after fire at Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro's residence, police say

Pennsylvania State Police say Cody Balmer, 38, has been arrested in connection with an early morning fire at the home of Gov. Josh Shapiro.

Balmer, who has not been charged, allegedly jumped the fence outside the Governor's Residence in Harrisburg, "actively evaded troopers" who were searching for him and broke into the residence, where he set the fire before fleeing. Pennsylvania State Police Lt. Col. George Bivens disclosed this information during a press conference Sunday afternoon.

Intellectually disabled teen shot by Idaho police dies after being removed from life support

An autistic, nonverbal teenage boy who was shot repeatedly by Idaho police from the other side of a chain link fence while he was holding a knife died Saturday after being removed from life support, his family said.

Victor Perez, 17, who also had cerebral palsy, had been in a coma since the April 5 shooting, and tests Friday showed that he had no brain activity, his aunt, Ana Vazquez, told The Associated Press. He had undergone several surgeries, with doctors removing nine bullets and amputating his leg. Police in the southwest Idaho city of Pocatello responded to a 911 call reporting that an apparently intoxicated man with a knife was chasing someone in a yard. It turned out to be Perez, who was not intoxicated but walked with a staggered gait due to his disabilities, Vazquez said. His family members had been trying to get the large kitchen knife away from him.

Federal judge orders USDA to unfreeze funds to Maine

A federal judge ordered the Trump administration to unfreeze federal funding that was allocated to Maine from the U.S. Department of Agriculture — funds that had been withheld following President Trump's clash with Maine Gov. Janet Mills over the issue of transgender athletes.

Pig kidney transplant fails after patient rejection

The world's longest-lasting pig organ transplant has failed, doctors announced Friday. Towana Looney, 53, of Gadsden, Ala., had her pig kidney removed on April 4, after her body rejected the genetically modified organ, according to NYU Langone Health in New York. The pig organ transplant, a landmark in the quest to develop alternatives to scarce human organs for transplantation, took place Nov. 25, 2024.

The kidney was still working well, but appeared to have been rejected because Looney had to reduce her antirejection medication due to an infection, according to the hospital. "Towana Looney's genetically engineered pig kidney functioned well for over four months, and she was able to enjoy life without dialysis for the first time in nine years," Dr. Robert Montgomery of NYU Langone Health, who performed the operation, said in a statement.
