CSIS to probe B.C. office after allegations of rape, harassment and toxic workplace
Canada's spy agency, the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS), has initiated a workplace assessment of its British Columbia office following serious allegations of sexual assault and harassment raised by whistleblowers. The allegations involve a senior officer who has been implicated, and the individual has been removed from the workplace. The whistleblowers claim instances of sexual assault, including rape, by the senior colleague, with one officer reporting nine incidents between 2019 and 2020. Despite warnings, a second officer alleges being sexually assaulted by the same individual. The investigation was brought to light by The Canadian Press.‼️
CSIS Director David Vigneault states that accusations of a "toxic workplace" in the British Columbia office cannot be taken lightly. A Workplace Climate Assessment will be conducted to address potential barriers to a safe, healthy, and respectful workplace. The agency initiated a third-party investigation promptly upon learning about the allegations. Vigneault acknowledges the existence of a culture that allowed inappropriate behaviors to fester for too long. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau expresses deep concern over the "devastating" and "unacceptable" allegations, and his government is directly following up on the matter.😥

Former Regina junior hockey coach Bernard 'Bernie' Lynch found guilty of sexual assault, assault
Former Regina Pats coach, Bernard 'Bernie' Lynch, has been found guilty of historical sexual assault and assault. The verdict, delivered by Justice Peter T. Bergbusch, indicates that Lynch inappropriately touched and struck a 17-year-old player in August 1988 while serving as an assistant coach. 👨⚖️
Despite Lynch's pleas of not guilty, the court found the complainant's testimony consistent and truthful. The incident occurred during a hockey school, where Lynch allegedly pressured the teen into inappropriate activities. Lynch's defense argued lack of corroboration and questioned the logic of the complainant's testimony. 🏒
The complainant reported the assault decades later, prompted by news stories about similar accusations against Lynch, aiming to prevent further harm under his care.

Canadian Hospital Patients Face Growing Rates of Harm: Study
A new report reveals that the rate of harm to hospital patients in the Canadian health-care system is on the rise, with 1 in 17 patients experiencing harm during their hospital stay in 2022–23, according to research by the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI).
CIHI's Hospital Harm report, released on October 19, focuses on harm inflicted on patients that could potentially be prevented by implementing well-established evidence-informed practices. The research indicates that the rate of harm to hospital patients has increased in tandem with higher rates of staff absenteeism, overtime, and the use of agency staff. This rate rose to 6 percent in 2021–22 and 2022–23 from 5.9 percent in 2020–21, following a period of stability between 5.3 percent and 5.4 percent since 2014.

Legault defends tuition hike for out-of-province students as means to protect French
Premier Legault is increasing tuition fees for out-of-province students in Quebec to protect the French language. He clarifies it's not aimed at anglophones, but rather a step for language preservation. Tuition for new out-of-province Canadian students will double next year, rising from $9,000 to over $17,000. International students will pay a minimum of $20,000 annually. This move is intended to balance funding between English and French universities. Legault's goal is to equitably distribute funds among French-language universities, countering the higher tuition revenue of Montreal's English universities, Concordia and McGill.

Oil revenues, taxes nudge up Alberta's projected surplus to $5.5B
The province of Alberta is expecting a surplus of $5.5 billion this year, attributed to higher-than-expected revenue from income taxes and non-renewable resource revenues. In response, the government has decided to end the complete waiver of the provincial fuel tax as of January 1, 2024. Notably, a key election commitment from the United Conservative Party government was absent from the financial forecast.👀

Chinese jets make 'dangerous and reckless' intercept of Canadian surveillance flight: Blair
A Canadian surveillance flight, part of efforts to enforce North Korea sanctions, was intercepted by Chinese fighter jets over the East China Sea. The Defence Minister of Canada, Bill Blair, criticized the encounter, describing it as unprofessional and unsafe, putting their aircraft and mission at risk. The interception involved Chinese warplanes coming within five meters of the Canadian Aurora aircraft and launching flares. Canada periodically deploys military assets to conduct surveillance operations to identify maritime sanctions evasion activities. This interception is not an isolated incident, as Canadian Auroras have been intercepted by the Chinese military multiple times during Operation NEON. Canada's surveillance mission involves aircraft and naval assets and is active until November 2023. Blair emphasized the importance of addressing such behaviors with the People's Republic of China.🛩
