'Chilling effect': People expressing pro-Palestinian views censured, suspended from work and school

Restaurant staff losing their jobs for cheering on a pro-Palestinian protest. A Palestinian Canadian journalist fired for her social media posts calling for a freepalestine. Medical residents flagged to potential hiring committees for their support of Palestinians.

These are just some of the many instances across Canada in which employees and students have faced firings, suspensions or calls for them to not be hired based on their publicly stated political stance on the Israel-Hamas war. It's a trend that has been reported not just in Canada but also in the U.S. and Europe, and across various industries, including media, law, health care and the service sector.

Air Canada fined $97.5K for failing to assist passenger in wheelchair

The Canadian Transportation Agency has imposed a $97,500 fine on Air Canada for multiple violations of the Accessible Transportation for Persons with Disabilities Regulations. The fine stems from an incident in which a passenger with spastic cerebral palsy, who uses a motorized wheelchair, was forced to drag himself off a plane in Las Vegas without assistance. The incident was widely criticized, and Air Canada CEO Michael Rousseau issued an apology, promising internal changes and improvements in how the airline treats passengers with disabilities. The CTA ordered the fine after its investigation into the incident and previous violations by the airline.

Norval Morrisseau fraud case highlights why it's so hard to catch art criminals in Canada 🖼

A recent court case in Thunder Bay, Ontario, resulted in the leader of the Norval Morrisseau fraud ring, Gary Lamont, being sentenced to five years in prison for orchestrating a large-scale art fraud operation. Lamont oversaw the production and distribution of hundreds of forged artworks falsely attributed to Anishinaabe artist Norval Morrisseau. Art-related fraud is challenging to investigate, and the case underscores the rarity of significant sentences for art criminals.

While the Morrisseau case was prosecuted through the Ontario Serious Fraud Office, dedicated art crime investigative teams in Canada are rare. Art crime is estimated to amount to $6 billion to $8 billion annually globally, and there are calls for a national art crime unit in Canada to address the challenges posed by art-related fraud.

British Columbians will no longer be given single-use plastic cutlery and bags 🍴

British Columbians will no longer be given single-use plastic cutlery and bags as of Wednesday. New regulations mean that wooden forks, knives and spoons are now only available on request, along with drink lids, straws, condiments and napkins. Straws are largely prohibited, with a limited exemption for those who need them for accessibility reasons.

It's all part of the province's single-use plastics ban, some of which went into effect on Dec. 20, aligning with federal regulations that went into effect on the same day.

Toyota recalls more than 100K vehicles in Canada over airbag issues

Toyota Canada is recalling over 100,000 vehicles, including Toyota and Lexus models from 2020 to 2022, due to issues with the front passenger airbags. The recall is related to problems with the Occupant Classification System (OCS) sensors in the front passenger seats, which may short circuit, leading to the airbag not deploying in an accident. Toyota will inspect and, if necessary, replace the OCS sensors at no cost to owners. In a separate recall, Toyota is recalling 3,812 Corolla Cross vehicles from 2022 and 2023 due to a manufacturing error in the instrument panel affecting the front passenger airbag. Owners will be notified by mid-February 2024, and affected vehicles will be inspected and repaired at no cost.

B.C. sees record stretch of people moving out-of-province — and many are headed to Alberta

British Columbia (B.C.) is experiencing its largest period of interprovincial migration losses in two decades, with over 12,800 people relocating to other Canadian provinces since July 2022, according to Statistics Canada. This marks the first time in ten years that B.C. has seen 15 consecutive months of more people leaving the province than arriving, and many are moving to Alberta. In the July to September 2023 quarter alone, B.C. lost a net of 4,634 people to other provinces, the second-largest quarterly dip since 2004. Despite these losses, B.C. set a record for migration last quarter, adding 151,437 people to its population, largely driven by international immigrants. The province's interprovincial migration performance ranks second only to Ontario, and Alberta has been the primary beneficiary of B.C.'s losses, recording gains for five consecutive quarters.

All new cars, SUVs, light trucks sold by 2035 must be zero-emission vehicles

Canada has released final regulations requiring all passenger cars, SUVs, crossovers, and light trucks sold by 2035 to be zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs). The new rules, called the Electric Vehicle Availability Standard, aim to ensure the availability of ZEVs in the market and reduce wait times for electric vehicles. Interim targets include making ZEVs constitute at least 20% of all car sales by 2026 and at least 60% by 2030. In the third quarter of 2023, electric vehicles represented 12.1% of new vehicle sales, according to industry officials.

Ottawa police's Rideau Centre hub may not open to public until at least 2025 👮‍♂️

Earlier this year, the OPS announced its future "neighbourhood operations centre" would give officers a space to meet and collaborate with community groups. The 3,000-square-foot facility will be located in the Rideau Centre.

According to a report presented Monday at the Ottawa Police Services Board (OPSB), the OPS will take possession of the space in March 2024, with a target of being fully operational by spring 2024. But the facility won't be open to the public for at least 12 to 18 months after that, police chief Eric Stubbs told media ahead of the board meeting.

Bannerman Park's biggest tent city happened 131 years ago in the wake of a stunning fire

In the aftermath of the Great Fire of 1892 in St. John's, Newfoundland, a tent city emerged in Bannerman Park to provide temporary shelter for the thousands of people left homeless. The fire, exacerbated by a series of errors and unfortunate conditions, destroyed two-thirds of the city, leaving nearly 11,000 residents without homes. The displaced individuals sought refuge in Bannerman Park and other open spaces on the outskirts of the city. Although the tent city provided immediate relief, authorities worked to address the housing crisis by implementing long-term solutions. Today, a tent city has once again appeared in Bannerman Park, drawing attention to contemporary homelessness and housing challenges.

This B.C. MP is taking a 4,500-km train ride to try and improve passenger rail in Canada

NDP transportation critic and MP Nathan Cullen plans to embark on a series of train rides from Toronto to Smithers, B.C., to build support for the Rail Passenger Priority Act. The proposed legislation aims to give passenger trains priority over cargo trains on the same rail line, reversing the current situation where passenger trains often face delays.

The bill seeks to amend the Canada Transportation Act and addresses the challenges of Via Rail renting track time from freight companies, causing disruptions, especially in regions with increased train traffic, like Bachrach's riding connecting Prince Rupert and Smithers.

Women's groups dismayed that officer who threatened to kill ex was demoted, not fired

Ottawa police officer Const. Yourik Brisebois, who threatened to kill his ex and brandished a knife during a 2020 domestic dispute, has been demoted for two years. The demotion follows his guilty plea to two counts of discreditable conduct under the Police Services Act. Some women's advocacy groups express disappointment with the demotion, arguing that Brisebois should have been dismissed from the force, and call for a review of cases he worked on. Community groups are seeking a meeting with Ottawa police Chief Eric Stubbs to discuss the case and address concerns about how the force handles intimate partner violence.

Pair charged with 1st-degree murder after body found in river

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) say they've charged two people with first-degree murder in connection to the death of Rose Kerwin, whose body was found in a river near Pakenham, Ont., in November.

The 50-year-old was reported missing on Nov. 13, a day after a body was found in the Mississippi River. Police identified the body as Kerwin's and deemed her death suspicious at the time. In a news release Tuesday, OPP said they've charged 56-year-old Marcel Lapensee from Carleton Place, Ont., and 23-year-old Samantha Osborne from Iroquois, Ont., with first-degree murder in connection to Kerwin's death.

Parking trends shift gears because of pandemic 🅿️

Parking trends in Ottawa have shifted following the pandemic with demand exceeding supply three days a week and empty spaces being reserved for monthly pass holders, who don't always show up. Data from the City Hall parking lot in September and October shows spaces are practically full, but only on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

A number of factors drive the mid-week parking crunch including the fact Ottawa's largest employer — the federal government — now mandates employees back to the office, but only for part of the week.

Statistics Canada reports record population growth, more than 430,000 in Q3

Canada's population experienced exceptional growth, surpassing 430,000 during the third quarter—the highest quarterly increase since 1957. According to Statistics Canada's October 1 estimates, the total population now exceeds 40.5 million. The growth in the first nine months of 2023 has already exceeded the total growth in any previous full year, including the record set in 2022. This remarkable increase is attributed to international migration, with approximately 313,000 non-permanent residents, including work and study permit-holders and refugee claimants, arriving in the country from July to September.

Judge orders slow down of Edmonton homeless camp removals

In Edmonton, a court battle regarding the dismantling of homeless encampments concluded with an agreement that allows for a slower removal process. The Court of King's Bench Justice Kent Davidson granted an interim injunction with conditions for removing encampments at eight sites in central Edmonton. The agreement was reached among lawyers for the Edmonton Police Service, the City of Edmonton, and the Coalition for Justice and Human Rights, an advocacy group for people living in tents in the city. While the encampments will still be dismantled, the new parameters aim to slow down the process, providing some relief to those affected. The Coalition for Justice and Human Rights filed an emergency application to address the removal plan, which initially targeted between 118 to 135 makeshift shelters deemed high risk by the Edmonton Police Service. The decision sparked backlash from social agencies, activists, and politicians, leading to protests outside the Edmonton Law Courts.

Adele Sorella found not guilty in 3rd trial for deaths of 2 daughters 👨‍⚖️

A Quebec Superior Court judge has acquitted Adele Sorella of killing her two daughters in 2009, marking her third trial. The previous convictions were overturned due to claimed errors in jury instructions. The case involved sensational details, including the discovery of the girls' bodies and Sorella's car crash.

Defense argued Sorella was in a dissociative state during the deaths. The absence of direct evidence linking her to the deaths was a key defense point, countering prosecutors' claim of her using a hyperbaric chamber to suffocate the girls. This trial was expedited without a jury, presenting testimony from the second trial.
