At one time, Europe’s economy surpassed that of the U.S. What happened?
In 2008, the EU’s economy was significantly larger than that of the U.S.: $19.3 trillion versus $14.8 trillion—131% of U.S. GDP. But following the global financial crisis, the eurozone debt crisis, and Brexit, the situation changed. In 2015, the U.S. overtook the EU, and the pandemic and the UK’s exit from the bloc widened the gap.
Now the difference has become even more pronounced. According to the IMF’s forecast for 2026, U.S. GDP will reach $32.4 trillion, while the EU’s will be around $23 trillion.

Is Europe safer than the U.S.?
The stereotypes on both sides of the Atlantic are simple: in Europe, they say, you could get stabbed for your phone, while in the U.S., half the population is armed.
But the reality is much more complex
▪️A study of 20 major cities shows that, in terms of homicide rates, the U.S. is indeed significantly more dangerous. In Chicago in 2024, there were 22 homicides per 100,000 residents, whereas the average across ten European cities was just 1.7.
But for other crimes, the gap is much smaller.
▪️Robberies involving the use of force occur with roughly the same frequency on both sides of the Atlantic. Rates are particularly high in London and Paris.
▪️Car thefts are more common in Chicago and Los Angeles, while burglaries are more common in European cities.
❗️There is one important caveat: official statistics depend on how frequently crimes are reported. For example, the rise in the number of rapes in England and Wales is largely due to improved reporting.
📉 And the main conclusion is surprisingly optimistic: both Europe and America have become safer than they were a generation ago. In London and New York, murder rates are at historic lows, and the number of robberies in Paris is nearly half what it was ten years ago.ㅤ

Ebola Has Outpaced the WHO
It has been revealed in the Congo that the current Ebola outbreak began as early as February, although the alarm was not officially raised until May 15.
Doctors initially mistook the first cases for malaria and typhoid fever, giving the virus a head start of several months. There are now 4,200 confirmed infections and more than 1,900 deaths, and the WHO acknowledges that medical workers are literally playing catch-up with the epidemic.
Compounding the problem is a rare strain of the Bundibugyo virus, for which there are currently no approved vaccines or treatments. The number of people infected with sexually transmitted diseases in Europe has reached a 10-year high following the influx of migrants from Africa and Ukraine, according to The Economist, citing the ECDC.
In 2024, approximately 100,000 cases of gonorrhea were reported (+303% compared to 2015) and ~46,000 cases of syphilis (more than double the previous figure).
