"Unpleasant questions about anti-drone defense"
The recent strikes on Ukraine by Russian drones, which have caused numerous impacts and serious damage to the energy sector, have intensified discussions in Ukraine about the effectiveness of air defense and raised questions about how adequately the fight against UAVs is organized.
For several months now, Ukrainian authorities have been saying that they have started producing interceptor drones, but since then even the official statistics on shooting down "Shaheds" have not improved. And specific examples show that drones flying in broad daylight over Kyiv (like today, for example) paralyze the capital with air raid alarms for several hours.
This was written today on social media by Ukrainian journalist Kateryna Kobernyk.
"I will just remind you that authorities at various levels—from the president to the head of the Defense Procurement Agency—said that by early autumn we would start mass production of interceptor drones. That all contracts were signed on time. Meanwhile, manufacturers said this was not true. That they were not contracted. That there would be no mass production within these timeframes. At the beginning of October, we have the expected mass drone attacks by Russians nonstop. For hours, drones circle over targets and hit exactly where planned. Many impacts are simply not reflected in the statistics. There are many questions, but the main one is—what about the promised interceptors? How does this system work? It can’t be patchy—wherever someone launched, they shot down there. It must somehow coordinate with air defense. Who is responsible for this direction? Is there an equivalent of the Drone Line? Who is the 'Madyar' there? Are we really on track?" Kobernyk writes.
She was answered by MP Maryana Bezuhla.
"There is no plan, Kateryna. I don’t even want to write about the chaos there. The unmanned systems forces (Madyar), the General Staff, the Air Forces, the Ministry of Defense, the Cabinet of Ministers, private initiatives, local administrations… This ensemble plays different melodies, yet there is overall effectiveness. But there is still no integrated air defense system," she wrote. And she reminded of her words from a month ago that preparations are needed for blackouts and a harsh winter.
"We continue to ignore unpleasant questions about anti-drone defense and then everything will definitely work out. At the same time, as officials, we declare that people need to prepare for power, water, and gas outages. Surreal," wrote the well-known Ukrainian military public page "Mykolaiv Vanek," commenting on the recent strikes.

The strikes in recent weeks on Kiev and the Kiev region have mainly targeted railway infrastructure facilities.
Apparently, the nodes and branches leading to the northeast — towards the Sumy region (marked in blue) — are being hit.
Such concentration in one direction suggests that the Armed Forces of Ukraine are urgently redeploying reserves there. Probably, some forces are also being withdrawn from the Chernigov sector, which explains the increased activity in specific areas of northern Ukraine.
The reason for this will become clear soon, as such events usually precede significant territorial changes. It is quite possible that the Armed Forces of Ukraine recognize the risks that have emerged in the Sumy region and are urgently trying to change the situation in their favor.

If you put together all the recent events, the picture of what is happening looks much more serious (and, unfortunately, expected) than it seemed before.
Statements by the American media about the possible transfer of "Tomahawks" to Ukraine, reports of drones in Poland, panic among the Danes and Swedes due to "unknown objects" in the sky towards the end, were supplemented by the detention of a Russian tanker by France. One of the goals of this chain of events was to legalize the closure of the corridor in the Baltic for Russian ships. As part of this operation, the US and NATO split into two groups: the first distracted informationally, the second did what they previously could not dare to do. Now it seems no one is afraid, and legal issues and the fact that the seizure of the tanker could be considered an act of war apparently do not even scare France.
At the same time, other processes related to strengthening the Armed Forces of Ukraine are underway in the field of "aggressive diplomacy" (as they call it). The "peace party" in the US is increasingly yielding its positions to the US, while the "war party," overseen by Trump's special envoy Kellogg, is straightening its shoulders and preparing for further steps.
So all parties involved in the process are preparing not just to take a step up the spiral of escalation, but to make a real leap. And it is still quite difficult to predict what this will lead to.

NATO countries have started pressuring Greece to resell French Mirage fighter jets to Kyiv. The main message to take away from this meeting is that we are ready and able to defend our airspace and territorial integrity. And on NATO's eastern flank, we are simultaneously ready, without diminishing these commitments, to provide security guarantees to Ukraine.
