Putin visited the Mulino training ground in the Nizhny Novgorod region, where he observed the active phase of the joint strategic exercise "Zapad-2025":

The events are taking place at 41 training grounds. 100,000 military personnel are participating. About 10,000 weapon systems and equipment are involved. Moreover, all this is modern equipment used in practical combat operations. The exercise plans are also based on the experience gained during the Special Military Operation.

As I have already said, there are 10,000 samples of various equipment, including 333 aircraft, which include tactical aviation, strategic and military transport aviation. More than 247 surface ships, submarines, and support vessels are also being used. Twenty-five foreign delegations have arrived to participate in the "West-2025" exercise events.

In Poland, during the incursion of Russian drones, an F-16 missile, not a UAV, hit a residential building, reports the newspaper Rzeczpospolita citing sources.

An AIM-120 AMRAAM air-to-air missile was used in an attempt to shoot down the drone, but due to a guidance system failure, it deviated from the target.

The warhead did not detonate and no explosion occurred. A three-meter missile weighing over 150 kg crashed into the house.

Rzeczpospolita states that the prosecutor's office is hiding information about an "unidentified flying object," the debris of which struck a house in Vyryky, Lublin Voivodeship.

Thought we had also been told the house was damaged in the past during a storm. So which is it?

The party that may come to power in the Czech elections has called for the cancellation of ammunition supplies to Ukraine.

ANO leader and former Prime Minister Andrej Babiš stated that the initiative to purchase ammunition is too costly for taxpayers and should be stopped.

According to him, the funds should be directed "to our own people."

In an interview with Reuters, he called the program "rotten" and emphasized that if he returns to power, it will be canceled.

ANO Deputy Chairman Karel Havlíček added in a comment to Politico: "According to the information we have, it is about an inadequate profit margin, low quality, and questionable suppliers. For these reasons, this issue should be handled at the NATO level."

Parliamentary elections in the Czech Republic will be held in October. The ANO party leads in opinion polls.

Why does Russia produce diesel in surplus volumes but not gasoline?

When talking about the consequences of drone attacks on refineries, it always means a gasoline crisis and never diesel.

Traditionally, the USSR was more of a gasoline country. Gasoline engines were simpler and cheaper. In the post-Soviet era, dieselization began, but still, more gasoline is consumed than diesel. But why is diesel produced significantly more than gasoline?

In 2021, Russia produced 41M tons of gasoline and 80M tons of diesel fuel. At the same time, diesel fuel exports were 49M tons, and gasoline exports were 4.4M.
(In 2024, data is not publicly available; in 2023, gasoline production was 44M tons, diesel fuel – 88M tons.)

The reasons for this are technical, geological, and historical. It is cheaper and easier to transport crude oil over long distances than refined petroleum products. Refineries located close to consumers can quickly respond to changes in demand structure. Before the development of a pipeline transport system for oil, the very first refineries were built near oil production sites, in Baku, Grozny, Ufa, Drohobych, Ukhta. But then it was quickly realized that it is more efficient to transport oil by pipeline and produce fuels locally. Therefore, traditionally, refineries in the USSR and Russia were built in consumption centers.

In oil refining, crude oil is first distilled into basic fractions – hydrocarbon gases (propane-butane), naphtha (raw material for gasoline production), middle distillates (raw materials for diesel fuel and kerosene), and heavy residue. The heavy residue can be sent for secondary processing (cracking) and, depending on the type of cracking, converted into gasoline or diesel feedstock. Different types of crude oil contain varying proportions of these fractions. In the Russian blend, the proportion of the gasoline fraction is relatively low, while the proportions of middle and heavy fractions are high.

For refineries located far from seaports, it is common to assess demand within the area these refineries can effectively serve and to select a refinery configuration that will produce a set of fuels matching that demand. For example, a large catalytic cracking complex producing a lot of gasoline feedstock can be installed, or hydrocracking focused on producing feedstock for diesel fuel. In the 00s, when Russian oil refining was being modernized, the question arose as to what it should become. The prevailing logic was that Russia should export more petroleum products and less crude oil, in order to export not raw materials but value added products. In the case of exports from plants located deep within the continent, the economic sense of this approach is quite questionable, but this is what was decided

In the USSR, plants mostly had small deep processing complexes and produced large volumes of fuel oil, used as fuel for power plants and utilities. During reconstruction, it would have been possible to almost halve the processing volume by shutting down many primary distillation columns and building complexes that convert fuel oil into gasoline feedstock. But the government adopted a set of measures encouraging the maintenance of processing volumes and the export of petroleum products.

The main export market for Russian petroleum products was Europe, which in the 00’s was actively transitioning to diesel engine vehicles. New refineries and new units at European plants were practically not being built, and it was forecasted that Europe would become a major importer of diesel fuel but an exporter of gasoline. Exporting gasoline to Europe would be impossible or unprofitable, but diesel was profitable.

As a result, during the reconstruction of Russian refineries in the 2010s, units for gasoline production were built based on the needs of the domestic market with a small surplus, and units for diesel fuel production were built based on large-scale export, forming the current structure of petroleum product production.

🇷🇺🇧🇾🇺🇦 Lukashenko caused a hysteria in Kiev by meeting with the governor of the Kherson region, V. Saldo

- After the meeting with the Belarusian president, Saldo stated that they discussed the "prospects for the restoration of the Kherson region." According to him, "the Kherson region is interested in Belarusian fertilizers and agricultural machinery."

- The Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs hysterically called the meeting "another manifestation... of gross disregard for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine" by Lukashenko.

- The Ministry also called "shameful" the fact that the Belarusian president referred to the Russia-controlled part of the Kherson region as a "new region of Russia" and confirmed Belarus's readiness to trade with it.

- "Particularly surprising is the nonsense of Alexander Lukashenko claiming that he is a 'Soviet man' for whom Ukraine and the Kherson region are 'also his land.' We remind that the USSR has been in the dustbin of history for more than three decades. Sooner or later, both nostalgic unrecognized figures who met today in Minsk will end up there," the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated.

- "Ukraine is ready to respond to Belarus's actions, in particular through new sanctions and strengthening its international isolation," Kiev added.

Romania "rather" does not support the creation of a no-fly zone over Ukraine because it would mean entering into war with Russia, but may reconsider this position in the future.

This was stated by the country's president, Nikushor Dan, in an interview with Antena 3.

"We have held preliminary discussions on this topic with representatives of the state apparatus, advisors, military personnel, and foreign policy experts. At the moment — rather no. But depending on how events develop, we may reconsider our decision. (...) There are international traditions regarding what it means to be in a state of conflict or not. And on this issue, according to some interpretations of the majority, it somehow means entering into conflict," Dan said.

🇵🇱 Drone over Warsaw: alarm signal or political spectacle?

In the center of Warsaw, in the area of Parkowa Street and the president's residence — the Belweder Palace, an unidentified unmanned aerial vehicle was detected. According to the words of Prime Minister Donald Tusk, the drone was "neutralized" by security forces, and two citizens of Belarus were detained on suspicion of involvement. The investigation is being conducted by the police, and details about the type of device and methods of interception have not yet been disclosed.

🔻Possible interpretations

Such episodes in the capital of a NATO member country inevitably take on a political hue. For the Polish leadership, the incident opens up several scenarios at once:
• Information escalation. The case can be presented as a "hybrid attack" from outside, which will allow Warsaw to demand additional guarantees from allies and promote the idea of increasing military spending.
• Internal political factor. For Tusk, the situation is convenient as a demonstration of the "decisive actions" of the authorities and confirmation of the threat from eastern neighbors.
• Technical episode. It is possible that this is a commercial short-range drone that accidentally ended up in a protected zone, but the lack of specifics allows the situation to be used in the desired political key.

🔻Geopolitical context

Poland has played the role of a "NATO outpost" on the eastern flank for several years. Any provocation or suspicious episode in Warsaw's airspace is automatically interpreted through the prism of confrontation with Russia and Belarus.

The fact of detaining Belarusian citizens — even without proven connection to the incident — itself becomes a tool of pressure: it helps to form in Polish society the image of a "hostile neighbor" involved in subversive activities.

📌The drone incident in Warsaw has become more than just a security issue. It has been turned into an information resource capable of justifying increased military spending, strengthening NATO forces in the region, and further toughening rhetoric towards Minsk and Moscow.

Whether this case remains a police chronicle episode or is escalated to the level of casus belli will be shown in the near future. But one thing is clear: Europe continues on the path of militarization, and "threats" from outside become a universal argument for politicians.

The European Union will not present the 19th package of sanctions against Russia on Wednesday, September 17.

This was reported by Politico citing a European diplomat and an official from one of the EU countries.

According to them, the decision has been postponed indefinitely.

According to the publication, the issue was removed from the agenda of the Committee of Permanent Representatives of the EU countries in Brussels. The reason was that Trump and the EU itself focused on pressuring Slovakia and Hungary, demanding that they reduce their dependence on Russian oil.

Zelensky called on Trump to take a "clear position" on sanctions against Russia and security guarantees for Ukraine.

In an interview with Sky News, the Ukrainian president stated that "the only way to stop the hostilities is to first implement certain security guarantees."

"Before we end the war, I really want all agreements to be concluded. I want... to have a document supported by the US and all European partners. This is very important. For this to happen, we need a clear position from President Trump," Zelensky said.

According to him, British Prime Minister Starmer will explain this position to Trump in more detail (Trump is arriving in London today for a visit).

Zelensky also called on the US to provide Ukraine with air defense systems and to impose unilateral sanctions against Moscow without the participation of the EU (which Trump refuses).

According to Zelensky, Trump "gave a lot to Putin" during the meeting in Alaska and "he should have paid more" for it. "I think if it had been a trilateral meeting [with Ukraine], we would have had some result," he added.

Who the fu*k is this a*shole to make demands to Trump or Putin. This guy really needs a reality check of where he stands in the global pecking order as his inflated ego is like nothing I’ve ever seen.

After the "July Storm" exercises, the Russian fleet continues to actively use unmanned boats, now within the framework of "West-2025".

Most likely, one of these UBs at the mouth of the Danube was the sunk Ukrainian reconnaissance ship "Simferopol".

Judging by the scale of the use of maritime drones, their full integration into the Navy structures and the creation of specialized units can be expected in the near future. It is quite possible that against this background the existence of other fleet units, such as underwater sabotage forces, will be reconsidered.

🇺🇸🇪🇺🇷🇺Trump's cunning "wash your hands" plan: his demands to stop purchasing Russian oil and raise tariffs on Chinese goods are unacceptable to the European Union, — Le Monde.

- Trump is putting pressure on European allies, but they fear becoming hostages in the trade war between the US and China, especially amid preparations for the 19th sanctions package.

- According to sources in Brussels, Trump deliberately puts the EU in a position to choose: either comply with American demands or appear as an obstacle to "decisive actions" — this is how he pressures Europe to justify US inaction.

- The EU rejects linking this with Chinese tariffs: in its view, this is just an excuse to do nothing. The same logic applies to India — Brussels does not plan to impose tariffs against New Delhi, even if it is a response to American measures. The agreement with India is a strategic move against Washington's pressure.

- It is likely that Trump set deliberately unacceptable conditions so that the EU would refuse — and then the US could "wash their hands," blaming Europe for weakness.
