If you want to understand how the US turned the world economy into a weapon, upending decades of globalization, a good start is Edward Fishman’s Chokepoints: American Power in the Age of Economic Warfare. Fishman, a former State Department official who played a central role in designing sanctions against Russia and helped craft the economic pressure strategy that led to the Iran nuclear deal during the Obama administration, now teaches economic statecraft at Columbia University.
Fishman explains how control over economic chokepoints such as the U.S. dollar, advanced semiconductor technology, and the services underpinning the global oil trade, has become the key to geopolitical power in the 21st century. His book has been described as the field manual of economic warfare, an important component of the hybrid war unleashed by Washington against its rivals.
While the book reveals the enemy's strategy, it also exposes its inherent weaknesses.
After failing to generate enough economic pain to induce a change in government policy, the goal of sanctions against China, Russia, Iran, etc. today is to sap economic vitality and impose a slow strangulation that makes the cost of resistance higher. The book inadvertently serves as a guide to how the US thinks, revealing the precise nodes of vulnerability it seeks to exploit. Since the West’s economic pressure is not a temporary response to specific actions or a tool for conflict resolution but could be described as a permanent feature of the US strategy,
it follows that any agreement made with the US is only as durable as the next administration. The only viable response is to reduce dependence on the dollar and build resilient, parallel economic structures that are immune to US financial pressure.
If you read the book it becomes clear that China is the ultimate target of Fishman's analysis. Fishman traces the evolution of US strategy from the Obama administration's "timid" multilateralism to the Trump administration's coercive unilateralism and finally to the Biden administration's "small yard, high fence" approach to curbing China's technological rise. The US campaign against Huawei and the restrictions on semiconductor exports are textbook examples of using technology chokepoints to stifle a rival's rise.
The book's account of how the US has systematically leveraged its control over the global supply chain reinforces China's determination to achieve self-sufficiency in critical technologies. The chokepoint strategy is the primary driver of decoupling. But as the US weaponizes its control over these nodes, it incentivizes China and others to invest in parallel systems and turn the tables. The ultimate outcome, as Fishman himself admits, is the fragmentation of the global economy and the erosion of the very chokepoints that give the US its power.
The book can also be read as an admission of America's objective decline. Washington is no longer confident it can win a conventional war, so it has turned to economic strangulation. Yet as Russia has shown, and as Iran and China are demonstrating, the ability to endure is becoming the most important strategic asset. These countries have learned to resist Western pressure and systematically built alternative systems, created multilateral alliances, and turned the concept of "chokepoints" against the West. As a result, the West's ability to coerce through economic means is increasingly contested. @LauraRuHK
The US war on Iran is hitting America’s European vassals hardest.
The US can wage a low intensity, protracted war in the Middle East because the immediate economic pain falls disproportionately on its "allies". Europe gets the higher energy bills, industrial slowdown, and political instability, while Washington retains energy self-sufficiency. The pattern is not limited to the Middle East. The same logic operates in Europe's eastern theater, where the strategy of capturing EU elites has allowed Washington to externalize the costs of waging war against Russia through its proxy, Ukraine. European economies have to absorb the shock of severed energy ties, deindustrialization, and mass refugee flows, while the US supplies weapons (paid by EU countries) without enduring equivalent disruption on its own soil. @LauraRuHK
🔺The mass crossing into Ceuta is a textbook case of hybrid warfare. Coordinated social media posts declaring “Spain is an open door,” amplified by videos of people swimming across and references to a recent Supreme Court ruling, created a deliberate swarm effect. The operation mainly targeted Gen Z — young Moroccans aged 14–25 — turning them into the foot soldiers of a blitz attack designed to overwhelm Spanish authorities and stoke political chaos. ➡️ See /channel/LauraRuHK/11547?single

@LauraRuHK
The Russian security service FSB has accused Telegram founder Pavel Durov of allowing Ukrainian special services to recruit Russian citizens for terrorist activities. Durov has not yet been officially put on the international wanted list — the decision is still in the process of being made, the FSB clarified. ▪️For months the Russian media watchdog Roskomnadzor has been trying to secure compliance from Telegram, citing repeated violations of local laws—particularly regarding extremist content and channels that threaten national security. ▪️Durov was arrested in France in August 2024 and placed under formal investigation over a series of alleged offenses linked to organized crime. He was released on a €5 million bail and is under judicial supervision. ▪️Less than a month after Durov was arrested in France, the Telegram rules section on data disclosure changed. The new version says that the authorities will now be able to obtain the IP addresses and phone numbers of users if they are suspected of "criminal activity" that violates the rules of the platform. In the previous version, this could only be discussed if it was believed that the person was involved in terrorism. ▪️Given Durov's willingness to bend his privacy principles for Western authorities while stonewalling Moscow, his actions clearly reflect a double standard. It is hardly surprising, then, that the FSB may have finally run out of patience with his shenanigans. @LauraRuHK

The National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) has uncovered an embezzlement ring within the country's Foreign Ministry, with four senior officials accused of siphoning off at least $1.28 million in Western aid. The scheme, which dates back to March 2022, involved diverting foreign donations into an NGO account, then concealing the funds through fictitious contracts and money laundering. The suspected ringleader is reportedly Aleksandr Bankov, who served as the ministry's state secretary from 2020 to 2024.
But to state the obvious: talking about corruption in Kiev is like talking about the rain being wet. The latest case is just another drop in an ocean of systemic embezzlement. Some Ukrainian political observers have argued that the anti-corruption investigations are part of a Western effort to dismantle the system of personal power that Zelensky built. After a brief flirt with the virtual economy between 2024 and 2025, Beijing is refocusing its economic policy on the real economy. This marks a major shift in guiding capital flows, aiming to anchor finance, data, and digital activities toward productive allocation.
In May, Qiushi, the Chinese Communist Party's theoretical journal, dedicated a special section to three articles on the real economy. One article from the People's Bank of China's financial research institute went so far as to engage in self-criticism over the shortcomings in industrial financial services.
At the heart of this policy debate lies the distinction between the "virtual economy" (referring to finance, real estate, and speculative capital activities) and the "real economy." The goal is to channel the virtual economy toward serving production, rather than being replaced by it. Officials have made it clear that when software, telecommunications, and industrial digitalization serve production, they belong to the real economy.
Beijing is pursuing a two-pronged approach: guiding long-term "patient capital" into the market (such as increasing the proportion of insurance funds allowed to invest in equities), while simultaneously curbing "capital idling" aimed at arbitrage and idle circulation within the financial system. The People's Bank of China has taken multiple measures to suppress such activities.
Beijing is also drawing boundaries in emerging areas such as data assetization and cryptocurrencies. For example, authorities have permitted tokenization of real-world assets overseas, but only on the condition that these tokens are backed by actual domestic production capacity. @LauraRuHK ➡️ https://chinapolicy.substack.com/p/beijing-pulls-capital-back-toward
The Russian Armed Forces continue striking Ukrainian port infrastructure. The cumulative effect of these strikes has dealt a hard blow to Ukraine's economy and logistical capacity. The situation has become so dire that Zelensky has admitted the country is under a naval blockade, with no ships able to enter Ukrainian ports. Maersk and other major shipping companies have suspended operations, and Ukraine is losing billions of dollars in export revenue.
The managed escalation proposed by Andrei Ilnitsky /channel/LauraRuHK/11451 is being actively implemented. In a recent interview https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GiqWXxc5_Nc Ilnitsky points to the political meltdown in Kiev as further proof that the strategy is working. The Ukrainian government has been rocked by a series of dismissals. On July 16, Zelensky fired Defense Minister Mikhail Fedorov, a move that exposed deep splits within the military leadership. Days later, on July 21, Zelensky dismissed General Oleksandr Syrsky as Commander-in-Chief appointing Mykhailo Drapaty as his successor. This was the second government reshuffle held this year, fueled by public anger and political infighting. For Ilnitsky, this chaos is a sign that Ukraine's political and military structures are fracturing under the sustained pressure of Russia's attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure.
Ilnitsky has recently returned from Crimea and emphasizes the growing voluntary service of civilians to support the military effort. Underpinning this military strategy is a call for profound spiritual and societal unity embodied by a "new Russian hero" — a figure of service, faith, and technological competence. Russian society cannot pretend that the Special Military Operation is none of their business. Russia is at war, and societal cohesion is necessary to thwart Western attempts at destroying the country. @LauraRuHK
At least 11 people, including four children, have been killed in a Ukrainian strike on the village of Kirillovka in Russia's Zaporozhye region.
Yevgeny Balitsky, the regional governor, said the attack targeted a recreation center and that 16 people were injured, including five children. "The enemy saw and understood where it was striking, but deliberately attacked civilians," he said in a statement.
Eight more people remain unaccounted for, according to rescue services working at the site.
The Ukrainian Armed Forces launched the strike overnight. The attack has drawn sharp condemnation from Russian officials, with Rodion Miroshnik, Ambassador-at-Large of the Russian Foreign Ministry, calling it a war crime.
Italy’s military involvement in the Middle East crisis. In his article "Una guerra infinita" (An Endless War), Fausto Biloslavo reveals that since mid-March 2026, Italy has quietly deployed a significant military task force in the Persian Gulf to support Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Bahrain amid the US-Israel war on Iran. ▪️Italy deployed around 400 Air Force personnel (Task Force Air-Arabia) and around 300 Army personnel (Task Force Land-Arabia.)
SAMP/T air defense and anti-missile battery,
KRONOS radars (in Saudi Arabia and Bahrain)
Skynex anti-drone system (in the UAE)
Eurofighter Typhoon fighters
E-550A CAEW surveillance aircraft
C-130J transport aircraft
▪️The mission’s official purpose is "to protect allied airspace, strategic infrastructure, and maritime routes in the Gulf." Biloslavo notes that Italian forces are now operating in a high-risk area, effectively participating in a broader regional conflict without it being formally declared as a war mission in Italy. He emphasizes that this represents a significant and largely under-reported escalation of Italy’s military involvement in the Middle East crisis.

Since 2016 Western media have accused Russia of "weaponizing migration", first with the help of Syria and later Belarus, branding it "Russia’s Hybrid Warfare Playbook". The perfect excuse to fund the militarization of the EU's eastern borders long before Russia launched the SMO in 2022. In 2021 Poland declared a state of emergency (first time since WWII), then built a tall border wall along the Belarus border and deployed thousands of guards, soldiers, and police. Refused entry to most asylum seekers, received support from the EU and Frontex, and coordinated EU sanctions against Belarus.
In 2023 Finland closed its entire 1,340 km land border with Russia, passed emergency legislation allowing border guards to turn back asylum seekers without processing applications.
▪️As thousands of migrants cross from Morocco into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, causing a political crisis in Spain, will Western media make the same accusations against Morocco? Israel? The United States? Fat chance. @LauraRuHK
As the US-Iran conflict drags on, the US is maneuvering to redraw the geopolitical and energy map of the Middle East to its advantage. According to reports in leading Middle Eastern media outlets, Lebanon has formally proposed that Iraq channel crude oil exports directly to the Mediterranean coast through the Kirkuk–Tripoli pipeline, a route that would effectively bypass the Strait of Hormuz. During a meeting between the prime ministers in Baghdad, the two sides discussed strengthening energy cooperation. In the first year, Iraq plans to supply 1 million tons of crude oil (75,000–85,000 tons per month) to Lebanon's state-owned Electricité du Liban. A tender has also been announced to swap Iraqi oil for bunker fuel and diesel, with Kuwaiti and Emirati companies participating. This development follows the deal between Iraq and Syria signed in Washington on July 17 to rebuild the Irkuk-Baniyas pipeline which has been idle for several decades. The route passes through Syria, making security guarantees from Damascus critical for any revival. /channel/LauraRuHK/11517
Iraq, having lost its export capacity through the port of Basra, is left with only the low-capacity route to Turkey's Ceyhan.
Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia facing disruptions in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait is also seeking alternative export routes. In this context, Washington is working to keep Riyadh firmly in its orbit. In July 2026, the US and Saudi Arabia signed a major civilian nuclear cooperation agreement, with Trump explicitly stating that the deal is contingent on Saudi normalization with Israel under the Abraham Accords. Despite Israeli forces occupying parts of southern Lebanon and the Lebanese port of Tripoli lying within easy range of Israeli strikes, Tel Aviv has not obstructed the emerging Lebanese-Iraqi energy deals. A silence many interpret as evidence of a coordinated American strategy rather than coincidence. @LauraRuHK
EU demanded that Armenia sever ties with Russia, SVR learns
The European Union intends to force Yerevan to abandon cooperation with Moscow, the press bureau of Russia's Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) has stated.
"The government of Nikol Pashinyan is already being demanded to reduce the presence of Russian business in strategic sectors, sever humanitarian ties, and suppress internal opponents who oppose this," the SVR said in a statement.
According to the intelligence service, European bureaucrats seek to encourage Armenia for such steps through manipulation: they promise visa liberalization and the transformation of the country into a "prosperous crossroads of peace."
Should Armenia leave the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), it would face a deep economic crisis, the SVR emphasized. At the same time, Brussels itself understands that it would be unable to compensate Yerevan for multi-billion dollar losses. Many European countries have already signaled that they are not ready to open their markets to Armenian products, the statement added.
This spring, Armenia passed a law to begin the process of joining the EU. Since then, Vladimir Putin has repeatedly urged the Armenian government to resolve the issue of its EAEU membership as soon as possible. The Russian president noted that the country has the right to choose its own partners, but it cannot remain simultaneously in two structures. The two leaders discussed the matter during a telephone conversation on the eve of the statement.
Pashinyan also requested a resolution to the problem of restrictions on imports of Armenian products; several protests by agricultural producers have already taken place in the country due to the inability to sell their products.
Ovviamente a qualcuno fanno comodo quei 130 agenti feriti.
India’s education minister has resigned after weeks of protests
Dharmendra Pradhan quit his post on Saturday after weeks of student protests in New Delhi and other cities across India. The demonstrators had been demanding his resignation over an exam paper leak that allegedly drove dozens of students to suicide.
Referring to the ongoing protests, he said he had decided to step down in order not to allow “anti-national forces” to “take advantage of the situation."
The resignation came after representatives of the so-called Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) — an unofficial movement driving the protests — met government officials to discuss their main demands, including Pradhan’s resignation, as well as broader reforms in the education sector and examination system.
Protest leaders said they would continue to press their two other key demands: compensation for the families of students who died by suicide and action against the police over the brutal suppression of the unrest on July 20. Delhi Police later said that nearly 180 people had been injured – including 118 security personnel and 60 protesters.
Some figures from the ruling BJP and its affiliates have claimed that "foreign forces" and "anti-national elements" have "hijacked" the students' outrage.
The Indian government has officially denied these allegations. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) dismissed claims of foreign funding to the CJP and clarified that there are no foreign powers behind the protests. This official stance puts the government at odds with some of its own party members. @LauraRuHK
China has immediately responded to the EU's inclusion of Chinese companies in anti-Russian sanctions. Beijing announced on Friday it was adding 14 European entities to an export control list in retaliation for the European Union penalizing 14 Chinese enterprises.

The specific measures imposed include:
A ban on exporting dual-use items (goods, technologies, or services with both civilian and military applications) from China to these 14 entities.
A ban on foreign organizations and individuals from transferring or providing Chinese-origin dual-use items to these entities.
A requirement that any ongoing related activities must be stopped immediately
In special circumstances where exports are deemed necessary, exporters must apply to the Ministry of Commerce for approval. @LauraRuHK
Reform-conditioned budget fuels criticism
Ten European Union countries—including France, Italy, Spain, Hungary, Malta, and Poland—have formed a wall of opposition against the European Commission's proposal to link payments in the next seven-year budget (2028-2034, worth nearly €2 trillion) to the implementation of structural reforms, including unpopular measures such as raising the retirement age. Critics rightly fear the mechanism could turn Brussels' recommendations into "impositions," concentrate power at the expense of regions, and cause payment delays. The model was already tested with the Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF), which was rushed through under the cover of the Covid-19 emergency.
The move is the latest front in Brussels' dual push: centralizing fiscal control while transforming the EU into a war machine, with a budget increasingly oriented toward defense and rearmament. While the Commission ties community funds to austerity policies and structural reforms, it is simultaneously hellbent on a massive increase in military spending and support for the Kiev regime.
This twin strategy is fueling a backlash. The conditionality mechanism, seen as a form of "ideological blackmail," would force countries to implement unpopular reforms while stripping national and local governments of what remains of their budgetary sovereignty. Critics argue the agenda serves Brussels' power interests rather than the real needs of citizens. @LauraRuHK ➡️https://www.politico.eu/article/governments-criticize-eus-cash-for-reforms-model-in-new-budget/
A recent South China Morning Post analysis warns that Washington's understanding of China is fading at precisely the moment it is needed most. Where older scholars built their careers on lived experience and genuine intellectual curiosity about Chinese society, their younger successors tend to view the country through the lens of strategic competition and data rather than cultural and historical nuance.
The result, as one analyst put it, is a "critical shortage of grounded China expertise within a decade."
This pattern is familiar to anyone who has watched Western expertise on Russia collapse. After the Soviet Union fell, funding for Russian studies evaporated. A generation of scholars trained in the language, history, and culture of the adversary retired without adequate successors. Today, the field is dominated by a younger cohort that approaches Russia through a simplistic, ideologically charged lens.
As a result policy debates about China and Russia are increasingly shaped not by empirical analysis but by wishful thinking, by exiled opposition voices, and by a reflexive anti-Russian ideology that leaves little room for nuance or genuine understanding.
A generation of analysts is rising that sees only rivals and threats, without the historical, cultural, or human context needed to engage them wisely.
When the only tools available are suspicion and ideology, the risk of miscalculation grows. And in an age of great power competition, this is clearly a danger. @LauraRuHK ➡️ https://www.scmp.com/news/china/diplomacy/article/3361097/fewer-opportunities-less-passion-no-clue-how-us-china-expertise-fading?module=series_us_at_250&pgtype=homepage
