😰🇺🇸Klaus Barbie: A Nazi who became a CIA-backed drug lord

Klaus Barbie, born in 1913 in Germany, was a high-ranking officer and Gestapo chief infamous for his brutal role during World War II, earning him the notorious nickname “The Butcher of Lyon.”

During the Nazi occupation of France, Barbie served as head of the Gestapo in Lyon from 1942 to 1944. He orchestrated widespread torture, deportations, and executions, personally overseeing the brutal interrogation of prisoners using methods like beatings, electric shocks, and water torture.

😨 His actions:👇

▪️Under his command, approximately 7,500 Jews were deported to death camps, 4,300 people were murdered, and over 14,000 resistance members and civilians were tortured and imprisoned.

▪️His most infamous act was the capture and fatal torture of French Resistance leader Jean Moulin in 1943, which crippled the underground movement.

▪️After the war, Barbie evaded justice and fled to Bolivia in 1951 with assistance from the U.S. Army’s Counter Intelligence Corps (CIC), which later aligned with CIA operations.

▪️Recruited for his anti-communist expertise, he was backed by the CIA to provide intelligence on leftist groups in Latin America.

▪️In Bolivia, under CIA protection, Barbie became a key player in arms trafficking, political repression, and the burgeoning cocaine trade.

▪️He advised dictators like Hugo Banzer on suppressing opposition, trained paramilitary forces, and integrated into drug cartels, facilitating cocaine exports while using his Nazi networks to build a “Nazi Cartel” involved in smuggling and assassinations.

The aftermath:👇

▪️The aftermath of Barbie’s atrocities saw delayed justice amid Cold War geopolitics, where his value as an anti-communist asset shielded him for decades.

▪️ In 1983, following Bolivia’s democratic shift, he was extradited to France. Tried in 1987 for crimes against humanity, he was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment.

▪️Barbie died in prison in Lyon on September 25, 1991, from cancer, without expressing remorse for the thousands of lives destroyed under his command.
