Spain and Greece have declined to transfer Patriot interceptor missiles to Ukraine, even those close to the end of their service life, The Daily Telegraph reports, citing sources.
Greece holds around 200 PAC-2 missiles approaching the end of their 23-year lifespan, according to the paper. The size of Spain's stockpile is not known, though Madrid earlier said it was prepared to give Kiev five missiles.
The refusal comes after months of pressure from NATO and the EU. One scheme under discussion had Norway buying the missiles from Madrid and Athens and passing them on to Ukraine. Athens has consistently said it needs its air defenses for itself, pointing to its long-running rivalry with fellow NATO member Turkey.
Kiev's backers are running out of places to look. Germany and others say giving up more interceptors would put their own security at risk, and new production cannot quickly cover the shortfall.

The cost of chartering an oil tanker for a passage through the Strait of Hormuz has hit the highest level in history, $1.33 million per day, the Financial Times reports.
Shipowners are now paying crews like soldiers of fortune to make the run past Iran:
➡️Tanker captains are being offered $100,000 a month, plus bonuses of up to $50,000 for each passage
➡️Ordinary sailors are being offered four to six times their usual pay
➡️Normally, captains working the southern Red Sea and the Gulf of Oman earn about $15,000 a month, and crew members from $1,500
One industry representative said seafarers are now "almost viewed as combat mercenaries" because of the risks involved.

🇺🇦 Ukrainian MP: Mobilizing women is "a matter of time"
Maryana Bezuglaya, a member of Ukraine's parliament, says registering women for military service and mobilizing them, at least for rear positions, is only a question of when.
"I'm in favor, though I don't think we'll get there at this stage," she said. "Not this year, not next, not the one after, but that will happen too."
Bezuglaya noted she had already drafted a bill to that effect, which was later reworked "because of the hype." Her aim was to have both men and women entered into Reserve+, the Ukrainian Defense Ministry's conscript registration app.
She also said Kiev will have to start cutting draft exemptions if Russia recruits 300,000 new soldiers by the end of the year, a figure forecast by Robert "Madyar" Brovdi, commander of Ukraine's Unmanned Systems Forces.
Ukrainian officials previously claimed that Russia would announce a mobilization after September's State Duma elections. Moscow denied any such plans, and no mobilization is underway. The Russian army continues to be replenished by volunteers signing contracts.

A tanker was hit by multiple projectiles 51 nautical miles north of Madinat ash Shamal, Qatar, at 19:00 UTC on Wednesday, according to UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), the Royal Navy-run shipping monitor. Casualties have been reported.
The strike comes amid the most intense week of attacks on shipping since the war began on February 28.
At least 12 attacks on oil and gas tankers around the Strait of Hormuz between September 28 and October 5, the highest weekly total of the war, maritime security sources told Reuters.
Meanwhile, US officials keep boasting of "wartime record" oil flows through a strait they insist is open and under "total control". The tankers seem to have missed the memo.

Lithuania's government has approved a rule barring Ukrainian men liable for military service from receiving temporary protection as refugees, unless they can prove they have already served or are legally exempt.
The requirement applies to new applicants only. Ukrainians who received protection anywhere in the EU before August 4, 2026 and have kept it are not affected. The rule comes from an EU Council decision, so other member states are expected to follow.
At the same sitting, the government extended temporary protection for Ukrainians already in the country until March 2028. More than 52,000 currently hold that status in Lithuania.

🏁☢️🇷🇺 NATO tries to calm Moscow ahead of nuclear drills
NATO is seeking to lower tensions with Russia before its annual nuclear exercise, Politico reports.
Steadfast Noon will run in Italy from October 13 to 23 with 17 member states taking part. Forces will rehearse operations in a nuclear scenario, including preparing aircraft for sorties. No live nuclear weapons will be used.
Alliance officials are trying to convince Moscow that the drills pose no threat. NATO's director of nuclear policy, Nassima Barrows, said the exercise is held every year and should signal to Russia that there is no cause for concern, since everything is predictable and leaves no room for miscalculation.
The reassurances come days after Moscow sent NATO a written warning that it is ready to use its entire arsenal, including nuclear weapons, if the alliance attempts to isolate the Kaliningrad region from the rest of Russia.

A classified CIA assessment warns that Israel could be heading toward civil war or state collapse, US investigative outlet Drop Site News reports, citing two US sources briefed on the document.
The August report, titled "Fracture From Within", was produced by the CIA's Red Cell, a unit tasked with alternative analysis. It describes a volatile mix of pressures converging ahead of Israel's October 27 elections:
🔸️Economic strain and record military spending after years of war in Gaza, Lebanon and Iran
🔸️Anger over draft exemptions for ultra-Orthodox men amid repeated reserve mobilizations
🔸️Tens of thousands of heavily armed veterans returning to civilian life, many with serious psychological trauma
🔸️Escalating settler violence in the occupied West Bank
🔸️Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's fight to stay in power
🔸️Growing international isolation, including eroding support in the US
The authors also gamed out possible triggers, including foreign tech and AI companies pulling investment and regional governments refusing to normalize or maintain relations.
"The writers of this are Israel experts," one source told Drop Site, adding that Israel is "one spark away from real internal conflict."
The document itself has not been published and the CIA has not commented.

🇷🇺⚔️🇺🇦 A Ukrainian MiG-29 shoots down a jet-powered Geran-4 at point-blank range over Kiev region, and may have paid for it
The fighter was so close to its target that it had to fly straight through the cloud of flame and debris.
Moments later, a suspicious trail of black smoke appeared behind one of its engines.
What could explain the smoke?
➡️Debris ingestion. The most likely cause. Fragments of the drone or the missile get sucked into the air intake and damage the compressor blades. The engine then burns fuel inefficiently, and it shows as black smoke.
➡️Hot gas ingestion. Flying through a fireball feeds the engine hot, oxygen-poor air. That can cause a compressor stall or surge, which also produces a burst of dark smoke, sometimes without lasting damage.
➡️Nothing at all. The MiG-29's RD-33 engines are famously smoky even when healthy. But smoke from only one engine, right after passing through an explosion, points to a problem.
If the engine did swallow debris, the jet would need to land quickly and the engine would need inspection or replacement, which Ukraine's ageing MiG fleet can hardly afford.

➡️Warehouses for storing weapons, military equipment, and drone components have been destroyed in the Podolsky district of Kiev.
