Ireland will inaugurate its new President, Catherine Connolly, today

She is the second Irish president in a row to have been a member of the Legion of Mary, the lay Catholic organisation that is the most successful Irish organisation ever, bigger than the GAA

Connolly credits the Legion with teaching her valuable lessons on life as she delivered meals to older people in need with them when she was younger

Her predecessor, Michael D Higgins, was also involved with the Legion

The Orange Order has released the text of the angry letter that they wrote to King Charles III in response to him praying with Pope Leo XIV

They refer to the pope as 'Robert Francis Prevost, current Pope Leo and Bishop of the Roman Catholic Church' and go on to slam Charles for 'appeasement of Islam' and for entertaining Rome and its 'heretical priests' and say that his actions resemble those of a 'weak king'

'We must see life in its true light,
It is an instant between two eternities.

On Veterans Day, we remember the most decorated chaplain in US history

An Irishman named Father Francis Duffy, the statue of whom stands proudly in the middle of Times Square in New York

Duffy was born in Ontario, Canada in 1871 to Patrick and Mary Duffy

His grandparents had hailed from Monaghan and Roscommon and had left Ireland during the mass starvation of the 1840s and 1850s

Duffy studied at Saint Joseph's Seminary in New York

He was an accomplished student, teacher and priest, earning a doctorate from the Catholic University of America and founding a parish in the Bronx

His later involvement in the armed forces would define his priesthood

When World War I broke out, Duffy was chaplain for the Irish American Fighting 69th Brigade, composed of men from the Bronx

Duffy was revered by the men, he accompanied them with hearing confessions and administering Last Rites

Fr. Duffy was more than just a chaplain

He was beside them in the trenches with the men and was amongst them as they fought and in many cases, died

General Douglas McArthur once said that Duffy was considered for the role of commander

Fr. Duffy was known for hosting long confession lines at the trenches and for recovering bodies from No Man's Land

Following his military career, Duffy helped politician Al Smith

Al Smith was the first Catholic to be nominated for President and was subjected to horrific anti Catholicism and anti Irish racism

Smith pointed out Duffy's patriotism to critics of Catholicism

25,000 people attended his funeral in 1932

He was described as 'a priest, a scholar, a soldier. His name had become a household word, because of the nobility of his life and the valor of his deeds. Thousands looked up to him and he was venerated by many'

In 1937, a statue of Father Francis Duffy was unveiled in Times Square in New York

Anne de Gaulle was the youngest daughter of General Charles de Gaulle.

She was born in Trier, Germany, where her father was stationed with the Army of Occupation in the Rhineland.

She was born with Down Syndrome and in a time where disabled children were sent to institutions, she lived with her family until her death. There was one sacred rule in the de Gaulle household: Anne was never to be made to feel different or less than anyone else. Charles de Gaulle was noted for his reserve and even with family members he was usually not very demonstrative. Not so with his daughter Anne, who received a warmth that he had seemed to be storing for his entire life just for her. He would entertain her with songs, dances, and pantomimes, he would often act as a child himself for her joy. One Colombey resident recalled how he used to walk with her hand-in-hand around the property, caressing her and talking quietly about the things she understood. She was, he said simply, "My joy. She helped me overcome the failings in all men, and to look beyond them".

In 1948, Anne succumbed to pneumonia, a month after her 20th birthday and died in her father's arms. Upon her death, weeping, her father said: "Now, she's like the others."

On 22 August 1962, Charles de Gaulle was the victim of an attempted assassination at Petit-Clamart. He later said that the potentially fatal bullet had been stopped by the frame of the photograph of Anne that he always carried with him, placed this particular day on the rear shelf of his car.

When he died on November 9th 1970, he was buried in the cemetery of Colombey beside his beloved daughter.

She could only utter one word clearly in her entire life: "Papa"
