🇺🇸🤝🇺🇦 Halted military aid for Ukraine may start flowing again — POLITICO
Halted shipments of some American military aid to Ukraine could resume after a series of high-level meetings in Italy and Ukraine over the coming week, according to two people familiar with the planning.
President Donald Trump’s Ukraine envoy Keith Kellogg will meet with Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov in Rome at an international aid conference followed by a meeting in Kyiv this week and next, with the issue of aid sure to be at the top of the agenda. The Ukrainian government sees the resumption of air defense and precision munitions as critical to its war effort,
The U.S. has indicated to Kyiv that deliveries of engineering equipment and some armored vehicles will resume soon, though no timeline has been given yet,
The Kyiv meeting between Kellogg and Umerov was not originally intended to address U.S. military aid, and was “set up before news of the arms pause came to light last week,” Kellogg spokesperson Morgan Murphy said in response to a request for comment about the meetings.
Trump discussed the aid pause on a call Friday with Zelenskyy, and also addressed a potential ceasefire agreement with Russia. The Ukrainian president said it was “probably the best conversation we have had during this whole time, the most productive.”
That call came a day after Trump spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin, a conversation the president indicated did not go well.
On Monday, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt indicated that the aid stoppage wasn’t permanent, portraying it as “a pause, to review, to ensure that everything the Pentagon is pushing out there is in the best interests of our military and our men and women in uniform.”
Some of the weapons denied to Ukraine included 8,400 155mm artillery rounds, 142 Hellfire missiles, and 252 Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System missiles, which can precisely hit targets up to 50 miles away.
Most significantly, the halted shipment also included 30 Patriot missiles used for shooting down Russian missiles and drones, which have been pounding apartment buildings and other civilian infrastructure in Kyiv.

🇪🇹 Ethiopia's Monumental Milestone: GERD Completion
Ethiopia has marked a historic achievement with the completion of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), a project that has redefined energy and development dynamics in Africa. Standing tall on the Blue Nile, GERD is now the largest hydroelectric dam on the continent, boasting an impressive capacity of 5,000 megawatts. The promising output is set to more than double the nation’s energy production, paving the way for Ethiopia to become a powerhouse in Africa's energy sector.
While heralded as a triumph for Ethiopian aspirations, the GERD completion brings critical considerations for regional water security. Neighboring nations Egypt and Sudan have expressed concerns regarding Nile water flow reductions, underlying the importance of diplomacy in forging lasting agreements. Ethiopia's leadership underscores a vision of shared growth and cooperation across the Nile Basin, a testament to potential unified progress in the region.

🇪🇺❌🇪🇺🇪🇺🇪🇺 The European People's Party (EPP) condemns the motion of no-confidence against Ursula von der Leyen calling it "irresponsible".
Two weeks ago, the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) started a motion of no-confidence against Ursula von der Leyen over her refusal to publish her text messages with Albert Bourla, the CEO of Pfizer where she negotiated the COVID-19 vaccine acquisition.
AUR considered this refusal by von der Leyen "criminal" especially after the European Court of Justice said that von der Leyen must publish those text messages, with allegations that Ursula accepted a deal where the EU and member states would pay 19.5 EURs/COVID vaccine shot instead of the market price 15.5 EURs/shot
AUR collected 72 signatures (10% of the European Parliament) and would need 361 MEPs to vote for the motion which is unlikely to happen.
The EPP's leftist allies, the S&D group, Renew Europe and the Greens have already said they will vote against the motion, on principle as they refuse to collaborate with the "far-right", although some MEPs from these leftist parties expressed dissatisfaction with von der Leyen's recent concessions to the "far-right" over migration and environmental policies.
The EPP condemns the motion as "irresponsible in a time of growing geopolitical tension". If the motion passes by some miracle, it would topple the 2nd von der Leyen Commission, a premiere in the history of the European Union.
Ursula will have an opportunity to defend her refusal to reveal the text messages with Pfizer this week when the motion will be discussed by the European Parliament.

Are Tolkien’s dwarves an allegory for the Jews?
More than three decades after publishing “The Hobbit,” Tolkien spoke about the Jewish-dwarvish connection during a BBC interview.
“I didn’t intend it, but when you’ve got these people on your hands, you’ve got to make them different, haven’t you?” said Tolkien during the 1971 interview. “The dwarves of course are quite obviously, wouldn’t you say that in many ways they remind you of the Jews? Their words are Semitic, obviously, constructed to be Semitic. The hobbits are just rustic English people,” he said.
As with the Old Testament’s later Jewish kings, the dwarf kings of Erebor prove to be highly corruptible, not to mention gold-obsessed. Their ceaseless accumulation of wealth – Tolkien makes clear – stoked the resentment of neighbors, and eventually brought on the marauding dragon.

🇺🇸🇵🇸🇮🇱 US contractors say their colleagues are firing live ammo as Palestinians seek food in Gaza
American contractors guarding aid distribution sites in Gaza are using live ammunition and stun grenades as hungry Palestinians scramble for food, according to accounts and videos obtained by The Associated Press.
Two U.S. contractors, speaking to the AP on condition of anonymity because they were revealing their employers’ internal operations, said they were coming forward because they were disturbed by what they considered dangerous and irresponsible practices. They said the security staff hired were often unqualified, unvetted, heavily armed and seemed to have an open license to do whatever they wished.
They said their colleagues regularly lobbed stun grenades and pepper spray in the direction of the Palestinians. One contractor said bullets were fired in all directions — in the air, into the ground and at times toward the Palestinians, recalling at least one instance where he thought someone had been hit.

🚨THROWBACK THURSDAY: Spy bros – Mossad and Turkish spooks’ dirty decades of deceit
Turkish and Israeli intelligence agents were once buddies, spying on Arabs and Soviets across the Middle East and beyond.
Trident
🔴 In 1958, Israel, Turkiye, and Iran formed a trilateral intelligence network known as Trident, linking Mossad, Turkiye's National Security Service (TNSS, later MIT), and Iran’s SAVAK.
🔴 Their first meeting launched subversion projects targeting Egypt and the USSR, according to Israeli author Yossi Alpher.
🔴 Mossad trained Turkish agents in counterintelligence and technical surveillance, per Israeli intelligence historian Yossi Melman.
🔴 Trident held semiannual meetings where intel chiefs shared information on common enemies: Egypt, Syria, and Iraq.
Currying favor with the West
🔴 The alliance also maintained close ties with the CIA.
🔴 Then-Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion pitched Trident to Washington as a Western bulwark against Soviet influence and Arab nationalism.
🔴 Turkiye recognized Jewish influence in US politics and viewed its relationship with Israel as a conduit to Washington through the Jewish lobby.
Iran drops out, Turkiye and Israel carry on
🔶 Despite Trident’s sophistication, neither it nor the CIA foresaw the 1979 Iranian Revolution that brought an end to the pro-Western regime in Tehran.
🔶 After Tehran’s exit, Turkiye and Israel maintained cooperation, spying on shared adversaries:
➡️Turkiye provided intel on Syria, Iraq, and Iran via US-built listening posts.
➡️ In return, Ankara received Israeli intelligence on Kurdish groups, especially the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK).
🔶 Turkiye became a key base for Mossad operations against Iran.
🔶 In 1996, Turkish-Israeli ties deepened with a defense pact that included bolstered intel ties, officer exchanges, joint training, port visits, counterterrorism, border security, and defense industry cooperation.
The split under Erdogan
♦️ Relations soured after the 2010 Mavi Marmara incident, when Israeli commandos killed nine Turkish activists bringing aid to Gaza.
♦️ In 2013, the Jerusalem Post reported that Ankara had allegedly leaked the identities of 10 Iranian spies meeting Mossad handlers in Turkiye to Tehran — calling it an “unprecedented act of betrayal.” In April 2012, Tehran announced it exposed a Mossad spy ring in Iran.

🇺🇸🍼 Judge blocks Trump from cutting off Planned Parenthood funding under "big, beautiful bill"
A judge on Monday temporarily barred the Trump administration from revoking Medicaid funding for Planned Parenthood, partially freezing a provision of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act just days after President Trump signed it into law.
The temporary restraining order by U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani lasts 14 days and directs the Department of Health and Human Services to "take all steps necessary to ensure that Medicaid funding continues to be disbursed" to Planned Parenthood. The ruling, which came after a lawsuit from Planned Parenthood, doesn't apply to any other health care providers.
The lawsuit takes aim at a portion of Mr. Trump's signature domestic policy bill that would cut off any federal Medicaid funding to groups "primarily engaged in family planning services, reproductive health, and related medical care" that provide abortions.

🇪🇺💉🦠 Von der Leyen — finally — defends herself over ‘Pfizergate’
“The implication that these contracts were somehow inappropriate against the European interests is, by any measure, simply wrong,” von der Leyen says
While the Commission had argued that the texts were too boring to warrant being released, the case became a flashpoint for transparency activists and right-wing groups. They argued that it demonstrated von der Leyen’s Commission was a particularly unaccountable one.
von der Leyen was unrepentant, sticking to the Commission's previous line and without giving any additional information on what was actually included within texts ― which we still may never see.
“Contract negotiations were conducted by the Commission and member states together,” she said. “Every single contract negotiated was examined in detail in the capitals before being signed by each of the 27 member states.
“There were no secrets, no hidden clauses, no obligation to buy for member states.”
She told lawmakers that “all 27 member states decided to buy vaccines on their own will, so any claims that any member state did not know about the contracts, about the prices or the amounts, is dishonest.
“In fact, let’s call it by its name. It is simply a lie.”

📝 Admin Note:
Proposed FY26 Budget released last week also increases NWS discretionary funding by $91M.
This area of Texas gets frequent flash flood warnings, almost none of which are as severe as this storm. The time of the flooding (4:35am) along with being used to flood warnings with no danger likely desensitized residents of the area to the real danger of this storm, and many were likely asleep when the advanced severe flood warnings were issued.
There is brewing resentment in Texas against their state government from both Democrats and Republicans for their lack of emergency management at the state level, and the incompetence in planning and building disaster mitigation projects. (Things like the L.A. River to divert flood waters, levies, etc.)
A candidate who acknowledged these issues and partnered with the current admin to get federal infrastructure dollars into Texas would likely have a shot at unseating incumbent zio-slaves like Cruz and Abbot.
