❗️A former Australian diplomat who served at the embassy in Washington DC has been accused of sexually abusing three young children who visited his home for playdates with his kids.

Thomas Austin Mahony has been charged with first and second degree child abuse in the United States and if convicted, faces a maximum penalty of life imprisonment.

The DC Metropolitan Police Department alleged Mahony targeted the children of close family friends, including two seven-year-old girls and a boy aged eight over a period from 2023 up until his arrest in July.

The 43-year-old married father-of-three, who volunteered at kids swimming groups in DC, had previously worked at the Australian embassy in the US capital and at the time of his arrest, was working as a consultant for the World Bank.

Mahony has been charged with two counts of first degree child sex abuse and one count of second degree child sex abuse and will face court again next month.

Alexander Stubb said security guarantees for Ukraine, being discussed by a “coalition of the willing,” would oblige signatory European countries to fight Russia if it attacked Ukraine.

He said the guarantees are meant as a strong deterrent, would take effect only after a Ukraine–Russia deal, and that Moscow has no say in Ukraine’s sovereign decisions.
