❗️Desi "Ned Kelly" Freeman could possibly survive in bush for 'months'

Criminologist Vincent Hurley says it was possible Freeman could survive out in the bush for "months" - but he doesn't think it likely.

"If he's a bit of a prepper, as they say, he could have somewhere in a cave food, water, change of clothes, jacket, firearms and ammunition, so he could be out there for months," Hurley told Today.

Police previously described Freeman as skilled in bushcraft.

However, Hurley suspected it was more likely police had the area Freeman was in cordoned off and that he would be unable to slip past them.

Hurley also said the chilly, wet weather conditions around Porepunkah will help the police rather than the suspect.

"Once they find him, they may not rush in and arrest him, but they'll assess his physical condition because he's exposed to the elements," Hurley told Today.

Police remain at the property.

A source with knowledge of police special operation tactics, speaking anonymously to protect relationships, said officers had to assume Freeman had prepared for the attack.

That could mean he had various camps within the forest and had prepared further ambushes.

Freeman has allegedly already killed two police officers, and faces mandatory life in jail if convicted of those crimes, meaning he could have nothing left to lose other than his life.

❗️Police have admitted Freeman, who lives on the semi-rural property in Porepunkah where the shooting took place, knows the area "better than us".

Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Mike Bush said Freeman had a superior knowledge of the area, but emphasised "expert" police resources were pouring in to help find him.

"He knows that area. Even though we have experts in the area, he will know that area better than us," Bush said.

❗️Australian police battled wintry weather on Wednesday as they searched alpine bushland for a "heavily armed" gunman who allegedly shot dead two officers and injured another at a rural property in the state of Victoria.

Police said day two of the manhunt was "tough going" for officers, with the threat of snow and no sighting of the suspect, 56-year-old Dezi Freeman, who they said had expert bushcraft skills and multiple powerful firearms.

Freeman, previously known as Desmond Filby, is alleged to have fired on the group, killing two officers and injuring another before fleeing on foot into dense bushland, police said.

"I can confirm that the suspect for this horrific event is still at large," Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Mike Bush said at a news conference on Wednesday morning.

"The hunt will continue until we find him."
