❗️Penny Wong has just accused Russia of conducting a “sham trial” of Oscar Jenkins, a 33-year-old mercenary from Melbourne.

Jenkins was convicted of being a “mercenary in an armed conflict” and sentenced on Friday to 13 years “in a strict regime penal colony” by a Russian court.

“The Australian government is appalled at the sham trial and 13-year sentence given to Australian man Oscar Jenkins,” Wong said in a statement.

❗️Sydney Morning Herald: There is speculation that Jenkins could become part of a prisoner exchange between Russia and Australia.

⚡️The Russian branch of the International Committee for the Protection of Human Rights has previously said that Jenkins might be released as part of a swap involving Russian spies Kira and Igor Korolev, as well as pro-Putin activist Simeon Boikov – also known as the “Aussie Cossack” – who’s been hiding in Sydney’s Russian consulate since seeking refuge there two years ago to avoid an assault charge for which he was convicted in absentia.
