❗️A pro-Russian influence operation has been targeting Australia in the lead-up to this weekend's federal election, the ABC can reveal, attempting to "poison" AI chatbots with propaganda.

Pravda Australia presents itself as a news site, but analysts allege it's part of an ongoing plan to retrain Western chatbots such as ChatGPT, Google's Gemini and Microsoft's Copilot on "the Russian perspective" and increase division amongst Australians in the long-term.

It's one of roughly 180 largely automated websites in the global Pravda Network allegedly designed to "launder" disinformation and pro-Kremlin propaganda for AI models to consume and repeat back to Western users.

❗️A Soviet-era spacecraft that never made it to Venus more than 50 years ago is finally about to plunge back to Earth.

Alice Gorman, a space archaeologist at Flinders University, said that if bits of it do make it to Earth and land in Australia, there are some things to be aware of.

"Don't touch it, because sometimes there are toxic elements," she said.

"Report it immediately to the Australian Space Agency, and they will then enter negotiations with the Russian government."

De-orbited space objects that make it back to Earth are owned by the country that sent them up into orbit, under the Outer Space Treaty.

The first two parts of Kosmos 482 landed in New Zealand just a few days after it launched, but the Russians refused to claim them.

"They can't pretend it's not theirs this time," Dr Gorman said.

❗️NSW Police will visit polling booths across the state on Saturday in a bid to ensure tensions do not boil over after threatening and aggressive behaviour at early voting centres prompted the electoral commission to warn that bad behaviour would not be tolerated.

On Tuesday, a high-profile extreme right-wing figure used the messaging app Telegram to call for recruits to turn up en masse to help independent candidate Matthew Camenzuli in the western Sydney seat of McMahon on election day. The electorate has been a Labor seat for more than 50 years and is held by the Minister for Climate Change and Energy, Chris Bowen.

The message, sent by Simeon Boikov, who uses the online alias “@AussieCossack”, included a list of all the polling booths in McMahon. Boikov has been staying in the Russian consulate in Sydney to evade arrest warrants after allegedly assaulting a man at a pro-Ukrainian rally in 2022.
