❗️ABC NEWS: Russia expert Matthew Sussex from the Australian National University points out in The Conversation, Russia's long range military planes can "easily travel over 10,000 kilometres."

"From a base in Indonesia, this would give the Russian air force the ability to conduct intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions during Australian military exercises, gather data on military installations in the Northern Territory (which also host US Marines), and even conduct surveillance on US military activities in Guam," he said.

"Equally, given the closeness of ties between Beijing and Moscow, any Russian intelligence that was gathered could be shared with China," Mr Sussex said.

Some analysts argue that a permanent or rotating presence of Russian planes that could monitor (or in a worst case scenario, even strike) Australian and US military assets in this region would present Moscow with plenty of options and opportunities.

It would also present what one former senior Australian official called it a "nightmare scenario" for Australian defence planners who are already grappling with the full implications of China's unprecedented partial circumnavigation of the mainland earlier this year.

Former ASPI head and senior Defence bureaucrat Peter Jennings also sees evidence of collusion between Moscow and Beijing.

"It is very much in China's interests to see Russian strategic bombers an hour's flight from US military bases in Guam," he wrote.

❗️Former Kursk Governor Arrested Over Fraud Allegations

Former Governor of the Kursk Region, Alexey Smirnov, and his former first deputy, Alexey Dedov, have been detained on suspicion of large-scale fraud.

“A criminal case has been opened against Smirnov and Dedov under Part 4 of Article 159 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (fraud). They have been detained,” the source said.

Security services clarified that the case involves the embezzlement of budget funds allocated for the construction of defensive fortifications.

❗️Indonesian Foreign Ministry spokesman Rolliansyah Soemirat said in a statement Indonesia will permit foreign military aircraft or vessels on “peaceful missions” to visit the nation.

“1. Indonesia has never granted permission to any country to build or possess a military base in Indonesia,” the statement read.

“2. As a country with a longstanding tradition of a free and active foreign policy, Indonesia will receive and permit military aircraft or vessels from other nations on peaceful missions to visit Indonesia.”

Australia's opposition Leader Peter Dutton was later forced to concede he made a “mistake” after falsely claiming the Indonesian President announced plans to host a Russian air force base.

❗️Coalition frontbencher walks back claim that Russian defence minister and Chinese leader had said publicly they did not want Peter Dutton as prime minister.

Bridget McKenzie has admitted she was wrong to say Russia and China wanted Labor to win the election.

On Wednesday afternoon the Coalition frontbencher claimed China and Russia would prefer an Albanese victory on 3 May, citing statements by foreign politicians that could not be found online.

“The defence minister of Russia and the Chinese leader both have made very public comments they do not want to see Peter Dutton as the prime minister of our country,” McKenzie told the ABC. “There’s two world leaders who don’t want to see Peter Dutton become prime minister of our country that’s Russia and China.”

But several hours later McKenzie reversed her claim.

A spokesperson for the Nationals senator said “the statement she made on Afternoon Briefing was wrong”.

❗️Russian Ambassador in Jakarta Sergei Tolchenov responds to Australia's hysteria over alleged Russian military plans in Indonesia:

“Concerning the inquiries coming from Canberra to the Indonesian officials about the alleged plans to establish in Indonesia a base for long-range aircrafts of the Russian Air-Space Forces, we would like to draw the attention to the following,” Mr Tolchenov said.

“Military cooperation is an integral part of the intergovernmental relations between the Russian Federation and the Republic of Indonesia. It is solely of bilateral character and based on a relevant legal framework and the national legislation of each respective country.”

In remarks first reported by The Australian newspaper, he said that all interactions between Russian and Indonesian armed forces and Indonesia were aimed at strengthening the defensive capabilities of both sides, not at any third countries, and posed no security threat to the Asia-Pacific region.

“When it comes to any challenges to regional stability, they are more likely to arise from the rotational deployment of large military contingents from extra-regional states on Australian territory, including the provision of airfields for the landing of strategic bombers and port infrastructure for visits by nuclear-powered submarines,” the Russian envoy said.

“Particularly alarming are the currently discussed plans to deploy the US’ intermediate-range missiles in Australia, which would put ASEAN countries – including Indonesia – within its range, as well as the acquisition by the Royal Australian Navy of nuclear-powered submarines under the AUKUS trilateral partnership."
