Zelensky vows to ‘hold’ occupied Russian territory
Ukraine intends to occupy part of Russia’s Kursk Region indefinitely, Vladimir Zelensky has said. Officials in Kiev earlier signaled that they plan to use this as a bargaining chip in potential negotiations with Moscow.
In an interview with NBC News released on Tuesday, the Ukrainian leader was asked what he plans to do with the internationally recognized Russian territory Kiev has captured as a result of a large-scale cross-border incursion that began last month.
While Zelensky stressed that Ukraine “does not need [Russian] land” and “[does not] want to bring our Ukrainian way of life there,” it intends to “hold” the territory because it is crucial to Kiev’s “victory plan” to end the conflict. “For now, we need it,” he said.
Trump accuses Ukraine of lying about death toll
US Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has accused Ukraine of intentionally covering up the true number of deaths in the conflict with Russia. In an interview on the Lex Fridman podcast published on Tuesday, Trump claimed that “the death numbers are going to be a lot higher than people think” when the time comes to “iron out” the casualties.
“They lie about the numbers,” Trump claimed in the podcast. He did not explain why he believes Kiev is doing so, though it is considered standard practice for countries to overestimate enemy losses and underestimate their own during wars.
“They try and keep [the numbers] low. They knock down a building that’s two blocks long, and they say one person was mildly injured. No, no, a lot of people were killed… millions of people,” Trump said.

The US lacks the resources to develop its own space force to the extent needed, the second vice chief of space operations revealed
“We are definitely sacrificing some because there’s not enough resources to go around,” he said. “We know we can’t buy everything we need, so we are ruthlessly prioritizing all the kit that we’re buying to make sure that it’s the biggest bang for the buck, if you will, during times of crisis or conflict,” Gen. Michael Guetlein said Wednesday at the annual Defense News Conference in Arlington, Virginia.
The US risks devastating consequences for everything Americans hold dear in the absence of increased investment in space force development, the military commander added.
Russian Disinformation... (Wait for it)... That Backfired or Turned Out to be True?! Part One
When inconvenient truths are revealed, a good diversion tactic is to simply blame it on Russia! It's quick, easy and way too many people still fall for it. Until they don't...
Here's a look back at some of our favourite "Russia did it" moments:
Hunter Biden's Laptop
When Joe Biden's not very reliable son forgets his computer in a Delaware store, the shop owner comes forward with its treasure trove of incriminating evidence - from bribery, drugs, pay offs, shady foreigners and... way worse.
Cue former intel officials crawling out the walls to call it "Russian disinformation." Social media bans links to the New York Post story and people are branded conspiracy theorists for thinking it might be true.
It's much more than true, though, it's evidence being filed in Hunter Biden's illegal weapons trial.
Pokrovsk pincer: Why Russia’s advance on strategic city could doom Ukraine’s Donbass defenses
Fierce battles are underway between the Russian and Ukrainian armies for the approaches to Pokrovsk (formerly Krasnoarmeysk), a key city in the Ukrainian-occupied Donbass about 60 km northwest of Donetsk.
Russian troops have approached the city’s outskirts, testing Ukrainian defensive lines. The Ukrainian General Staff said Wednesday that the Pokrovsk area was one of the “hottest” along the entire front.
◻️ Situated near the administrative border of Dnepropetrovsk region, Pokrovsk and its environs are a strategic transport hub and economic center in Ukrainian-occupied Donbass. Defense observers say Russia’s liberation of the city would cut supply lines of Ukrainian forces in Chasov Yar, and give Russian troops a chance to flank the enemy in Kramatorsk and Slavyansk.
◻️ That’s because Pokrovsk is a key railway and highway junction, situated at the intersection of rail lines leading to Pavlograd and Dnepr (formerly Dnepropetrovsk). The M30 (E50) Pokrovsk-Karlovka-Donetsk highway passes through the city, as do three other major roads.
◻️ Roughly 15 km southwest of Pokrovsk is Krasnoarmeyskaya-Zapadnaya Mine №1, one of the only coking coal mines left in Ukraine’s possession, with its estimated reserves of over 200 million tons of coal crucial to Ukraine’s waning metallurgy sector. Economists say losing the mine could strike a crushing blow to Ukraine’s economy and energy sector.
◻️ Western media and officials have sounded the alarm about the dire situation in Pokrovsk. Forbes warned that “hundreds of Ukrainian troops” from four separate brigades could be encircled if local defenses crack, and said that “a Ukrainian retreat may already be underway.”
◻️ Former German MoD chief of staff Nico Lange told Newsweek that “what we see in Pokrovsk is the result of the very late and insufficient mobilization effort that was delayed politically in Ukraine.” “Not having mobilized enough, defense around Pokrovsk is now a big problem,” with “many units” unable to hold the line or having to retreat “because they are just staffed by 10 or 20 or 30 percent,” Lange said.

Journalists from Australia's ABC broadcaster illegally visit Russia's Kursk region
Journalists from the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) have illegally visited Russia's Kursk Region and published a report about the trip on Wednesday.
The journalists, accompanied by the Ukrainian military, crossed the Russian border without authorization and visited the town of Sudzha and nearby villages, the ABC's report said. They admitted that their trip had come with risks, not just from being in a combat zone, but also because they were unlikely to ever be able to set foot in Russia as individuals.
The authors of the report and photos taken on Russian territory are ABC correspondents Kathryn Diss and Fletcher Yeung.
This is not the first time that foreign journalists have accessed Russian territory illegally.
Last month, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova warned that each case of illegal entry by Western journalists into the Kursk Region would be reviewed individually, and this applied to journalists from all countries.

Rothschild helped Ukraine clinch debt restructuring – Reuters
Ukraine reached its recent agreement with bondholders on a debt restructuring as a result of efforts by Rothschild & Co, Reuters reported, citing sources involved in the talks. Kiev appointed Rothschild as an advisor to its Finance Ministry in 2017.
Kiev announced last week that it had reached an agreement with a group of foreign investors to restructure its $20 billion debt. Bondholders – including US financial giants BlackRock and Pimco, as well as French asset manager Amundi – granted Ukraine a two-year debt freeze in February 2022 when the conflict with Russia broke out.
The bondholders’ committee, which represents the holders of 25% of the bonds, has agreed to accept losses of 37%, or $8.7 billion, on the nominal value of their debt.

🇦🇷 Milei will eliminate more than 120,000 disability pensions
The president of Argentina, Javier Milei, justified the measure by claiming that only 7% of the beneficiaries met all the necessary requirements.
The National Directorate of Economic Support and Allocations of the National Disability Agency (Andis) reported that between 30% and 40% of the 400,000 pensioners did not qualify to receive these subsidies.
The requirements are not to receive other assistance from the State, not have a formal job, not have sufficient income, be an Argentine citizen or resident with more than 10 years of residence and not be in prison.
Those affected were people who could not work for reasons of health or social vulnerability.
The presidential spokesperson of Argentina, Manuel Adorni, stated that between 2003 and 2015 the number of non-contributory pensions for work disability rose from 79,000 to more than one million, and between 2019 and 2023 it rose from 1.02 million to 1.2 million beneficiaries.
