Venezuela could transfer oil development rights to BRICS — Maduro

Venezuela could transfer the development rights to its vast oil and gas fields that are currently operated by American energy companies to entities from BRICS nations, President Nicolas Maduro warned on Friday during a press conference in Caracas. 

“If these people up north and their partners in the world make the mistake of their lives, then those oil blocks and those gas blocks that were already signed up [for US companies] will go to our BRICS allies,”  Maduro said, adding that Washington was at the forefront of plans to destabilize his country.

With an estimated 303 billion barrels, Venezuela accounts for approximately 17% of global reserves of crude oil, according to the International Energy Agency, which lists the Bolivarian republic as having the world’s largest proven oil reserves.

In Israel, there is heightened alertness for a potential Hezbollah and Iranian attack, with officials considering preemptive strikes but stressing there is no cause for panic. Prime Minister Netanyahu and Defense Minister Gallant conducted a security assessment. Iran is determined to respond, and President Biden will hold a security discussion in the White House Situation Room.

Israel continues to prepare for a possible Iranian, Hezbollah, and proxy attack in the Middle East with high vigilance, also planning an Israeli response in case of an attack on its territory. Prime Minister Netanyahu held a security assessment in Tel Aviv with Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi, Mossad Chief Dedi Barnea, and Shin Bet Head Ronen Bar. President Joe Biden will hold a security meeting in the Situation Room tonight.

Israel assumes an inevitable attack in response to the eliminations of senior Hezbollah official Fouad Shuker and Hamas Political Bureau Chief Ismail Haniyeh. However, Israeli officials believe Israel can withstand such an attack and dismiss doomsday scenarios. They also think neither side desires a regional war.

Officials acknowledge communication challenges and the difficulty of conveying reality to the public. The concern is not the initial response but subsequent reactions. One possibility is a preemptive strike if Israel has prior knowledge of an attack, comparing it to the intelligence before the April 13 Iranian attack. Israel emphasizes preemptive strikes if there is certain intelligence of an impending attack, stressing that whether it happens depends on shared intelligence with the US.

Regarding an Israeli response to an attack, officials in Jerusalem say it mainly depends on early interception. An Israeli source involved in escalation preparations says, “If Israel conducts a preemptive strike, it covers the event. If it intercepts in the air, it depends on the threat and timing.” There are many variables, including potential Iranian threats versus Lebanese threats.

The second phase of interception includes intelligence and home front preparations. “Expect impressive home front readiness,” say officials in Jerusalem.

Jerusalem clarifies that Israeli and American strength and support are at their peak, highlighting the significant US presence in the region. The US has brought ships and has bases in the area, both in Arab countries and at sea, capable of intercepting and warning.

The last time Iran launched missiles at Israel, some interceptions were made from a US base in Qatar. When asked if the coalition would cooperate again, the Israeli source says it depends on the attack type. Prime Minister Netanyahu stated at a memorial for Ze’ev Jabotinsky, “Iran and its proxies’ aggression is insatiable. They seek to encircle us with terror on seven fronts. Our long arm strikes in Gaza, Yemen, Beirut – wherever needed. We will face them in any arena, near or far. Anyone who harms our citizens will pay a heavy price.”

Defense Minister Gallant, visiting the Ground Technology Unit responsible for operational technological responses, issued a warning to Iran and Hezbollah: “I reviewed the IDF’s readiness in defense and offense. We are very strong in defense – on land and in the air, ready to quickly transition to offense or response. We will exact a price, as we have recently from the enemy.
