🧐 How the 🇺🇸 S&P 500 Behaves During Wars — 85 Years of Data, the “Oil-War” Subset, and What It Means for Investors

1. Eight-plus Decades of Market Reactions

Analysts counted 45 armed conflicts since 1940 (WWII excluded). On average the index was:
➡️ +0.7 % one month after the shooting starts
➡️ +4–4.5 % six months later
➡️ +9 % twelve months later
As we can see, most war shocks are short-lived; six-to-twelve months on, the market usually trades higher than on day one of the crisis.

2. Zooming In on 🛢 Oil-Driven Wars

➡️ We isolated eight conflicts where oil was the key variable (Yom Kippur ’73, Gulf War ’90, Soleimani strike ’20, “Iron Swords” ’23, etc.).
➡️ The outlier is 1973: Yom Kippur + Arab oil embargo = roughly -35 % on the S&P in 12 months.😮
➡️ In the other seven oil wars the index was flat or positive a year later (six wins out of eight). Strip out 1973 and the average 12-month result hovers around +1 %.

3. Why 1973 ≠ 2024

➡️ Back then the U.S. was a net importer of oil — today it both pumps and exports.
➡️ OPEC held near-total pricing power in the ’70s; today OECD countries hold strategic reserves equal to several weeks of global demand.
➡️ The 1970s Fed was tightening into double-digit inflation; today CPI is falling and the Fed has room to cushion a shock if needed.

4. The Current Flashpoint: 🇮🇷 Iran — 🇮🇱 Israel

➡️ Shutting the Strait of Hormuz (20 % of global seaborne crude) would be dramatic, but a full-blown market meltdown would also require a prolonged blockade, strikes on 🇸🇦 Saudi infrastructure, and harsh secondary sanctions. Major banks see that cocktail as low probability.
➡️ Historically, the S&P 500 “forgets” most wars unless they trigger a lasting energy shock and recession.

5. Where Crypto (and TON) Fits In

➡️ Bitcoin sometimes trades like “digital gold” (rising on fear), but more often moves with risk assets — just with bigger swings.

➡️ Diversify: a dash of defensives (gold, energy ETFs) plus stocks/crypto. Sharp drops in one bucket often offset gains elsewhere.
➡️ News ≠ strategy. Headlines move prices for days; long-run trends are set by earnings and central-bank policy.
➡️ Crypto stack: core (BTC/ETH) + theme (TON). Expect 20-30 % draw-downs in alts — normal, not terminal.

Wars shock instantly, yet the S&P 500 usually “forgets” within six to twelve months. Oil magnifies the impact, but a 1973-style crash is far harder to replay today. Panic rarely pays; calm discipline and broad diversification still work even when missiles make the news.
