Итак, разберемся сегодня, когда употреблять в речи Pass Time, а когда Spend Time.
Мы используем Spend time, когда говорим о времени, потраченном на какую-либо активность.

Выражение Pass the time имеет немного другое значение - мы делаем что-то, чтобы заставить время идти быстрее. Например, когда ждем что-то:

📃 Carrot and Stick
A system in which you are rewarded for some actions and threatened with punishment for others.
Дословно это сочетание переводится «морковь и палка», то есть метод поощрения — морковь, и наказания — палка. В нашем языке эта идиома звучит — «метод кнута и пряника». В данном случае на первом месте идёт наказание — кнут, а затем поощрение — пряник.

✏️ The verb give refers to transferring something to someone else:

✏️ The phrasal verb give away means to give for free something that would probably cost money in a normal situation:

▪️ When I bought a new computer, I gave away the old one. = I gave it to someone for free instead of selling it
▪️ The radio station is giving away two tickets to the rock concert.

a metaphor for a that prevents people, typically women or minorities, from ascending to high positions.

📄 Use it correctly
INCORRECT: I DIDN’T SAVE MONEY ENOUGH.
CORRECT: I DIDN’T SAVE ENOUGH MONEY.
The word enough comes before a noun, but after an adjective:
Используйте enough ПЕРЕД существительным, но ПОСЛЕ прилагательного
▫️We have enough food. (food = noun )
▫️You’re not tall enough to go on the ride. (tall = adjective )
❕❕❕ Use it correctly
❌INCORRECT: HE LOVES TEAM SPORTS AS SOCCER.
✅CORRECT: HE LOVES TEAM SPORTS SUCH AS SOCCER.
✅CORRECT: HE LOVES TEAM SPORTS LIKE SOCCER.
When you want to give an example, use such as or like. Don’t use only “as.”
Such as is more formal than like.

📃 GROW VS. GROW UP
The verb grow is used when things increase in size and development:
(расти в прямом смысле)
▪️ The country’s economy is growing.
▪️ Many different kinds of flowers grow in my garden.
The phrasal verb grow up is used specifically for children becoming older and more mature (вырасти = повзрослеть):
▪️ My 5-year-old son wants to be a firefighter when he grows up.
▪️ I’m very thankful that I grew up in a loving family.
If you say an adult “needs to grow up,” it means he/she is acting immature (like a child) and should act more mature, like an adult.

👎🏻Don’t Say: "Actually, I Work At The University."
👍🏻 Say: "Currently, I Work At The University."
Currently means “now, at the present moment.” - сейчас, на данный момент
Actually means “in reality,” - на самом деле - and it is often used to make corrections:
▪️“You’re from Brazil so you speak Spanish, right?”
▪️“Actually, Portuguese is spoken in Brazil.”
📃 NEVER USE “TO” AFTER “ARRIVE”
Don’t say: We arrived to the airport.
Don’t say: When will you arrive to Rome?
The correct sentences are:
◾️We arrived at the airport.
◾️We got to the airport. (more informal)
◾️When will you arrive in Rome?
“Get to” is an informal way to say “arrive”… but don’t use “to” with the previous exceptions:
◾️I got home at midnight.
◾️What time did you get there?
◾️The dog got outside again.
