May 8 is the day several European countries celebrate their liberation from Nazi occupation and the defeat of fascism. Even though most of Eastern and Central Europe was liberated by Soviet troops, lies, myths, and misconceptions about the Red Army remain prevalent, especially in the West. What is less known, however, is that many of those myths stem from Nazi and anti-communist propaganda. Here are some of the most common myths debunked.

“They’ve taken everything away from me.” – In the Occupied West Bank, Israel has denied thousands of students access to education. The ongoing Israeli military operation, “Iron Wall,” has caused the largest displacement of Palestinians since 1967. Schools have been shut down, and children forced from their communities. red. media spoke with displaced students and school staff about the impact on learning.
Israel is targeting education in the West Bank just as it has in Gaza. In the besieged enclave, the UN has accused Israel of committing “scholasticide”—the deliberate and systematic destruction of the Palestinian education system. Teachers, students, and school staff are being arrested, detained, or killed. Schools are being destroyed.

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has backed India’s military strikes on Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir that killed civilians, including a child. Calling the assault “measured” and “non-escalatory,” the party aligns itself with the interests of India’s ruling far-right BJP–supporting a dangerous military escalation between nuclear-armed states.
CPI (Marxist) has long been criticized by CPI (Maoist)—an armed revolutionary communist movement—for abandoning class struggle in favor of electoral politics and state alignment. The CPI (Marxist) endorses the government’s claim that Pakistan was behind the Pahalgam attack, which killed 26 civilians, despite no public evidence being presented.

Today marks 71 years since Vietnam’s historic victory over French colonial forces at the Battle of Dien Bien Phu. The battle is considered one of the greatest of the 20th century, precipitating the end of French colonial rule in Southeast Asia.
At the time, the Vietnamese liberation forces, led by communist revolutionary Ho Chi Minh, spearheaded the Anti-French Resistance War, opposing French colonial rule following attempts to reinstate it after World War II. After a 56-day-long bloody battle and a final assault on May 7, the French-held garrison at Dien Bien Phu fell to Viet Minh forces led by Vo Nguyen Giap.
General Giap was the mastermind behind the Viet Minh’s victory at Dien Bien Phu. His strategic acumen, organizational skills, and innovative tactics played a critical role not only in this battle but also in shaping future tactics used by the North Vietnamese Army during the Vietnam War.

Merz pushes tax cuts for the ultra-wealthy and longer workweeks. The CDU ideolog follows a corporate-first neoliberal agenda. Germany’s left often calls him the “chancellor of the rich.” Merz wants Germany to lead a new European military bloc as US-EU tensions rise. He approved hundreds of millions in military spending and flirted with ideas of a post-NATO future with a German-led EU army.
His campaign marked a race to the bottom, mirroring the far-right talking points of the AfD. Merz blamed migrants for nearly every problem in the country. The CDU-led coalition now plans harsh anti-migration crackdowns, criminalization of migrants, and mass deportations. Merz broke an unofficial parliamentary taboo in January by cooperating with the AfD, normalizing far-right influence in national politics.

On Sunday, George Simion, founder and leader of Romania’s ultra-nationalist AUR party and self-declared MAGA disciple, won 40.5% of the vote in Romania’s first-round election. By Monday, Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu had resigned, marking the collapse of the ruling government.
Simion vows to ban same-sex marriage, eliminate Holocaust education, cut military aid to Ukraine, and purge Europe of what he calls “neo-Marxist madness.” His nominee for prime minister, Călin Georgescu, is under investigation for building fascist networks and has described Romania’s wartime Nazi collaborators as “martyrs.”
Simion wants to reunite Romania with its pre–World War Two territories and has traveled to the US to build ties with Trump-aligned Republicans. In 2023, he met with Likud officials in Israel, endorsing West Bank settlements. He brands his political project simply: “family, nation, faith, and freedom.”
The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has dismissed Sudan’s genocide case against the UAE.
In April, Sudan accused the UAE of being “complicit in the genocide in West Darfur” through its military, financial, and political support to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Although UN experts have considered the allegations credible, the ICJ dismissed the case due to lack of jurisdiction. While both Sudan and the UAE are signatories to the Genocide Convention, the UAE made a reservation upon accession, explicitly rejecting the Court’s jurisdiction.
The Court also rejected Sudan’s request for emergency measures and has removed the case from its docket. UN reports have documented the UAE’s funneling of weapons to the RSF, highlighting the deep and long-standing ties between the UAE and the paramilitary group. The UAE praised the ICJ ruling as a legal victory.
Meanwhile, the civil war in Sudan continues to rage. In recent days, several RSF drone attacks have struck multiple locations in Port Sudan.
🟡 BREAKING: Massive fires rage in Hodeidah, Yemen, following heavy US and Israeli bombings.
According to Israeli media, 30 Israeli warplanes are participating in the ongoing US-led assault on Yemen.
Israel's involvement follows a missile strike by Yemeni armed forces that targeted the area near Ben Gurion Airport.
In a statement issued yesterday, Yemeni Armed Forces (YAF) spokesperson Yahya Saree announced: “In response to Israel's escalating aggression and its expanded military operations in Gaza, the YAF have declared a full air blockade on Israel.”
Yemen is being targeted due to its unwavering support for the people of Gaza. Despite the ongoing heavy bombardments, the YAF have declared that the attacks on Israel and the naval blockade will only cease once a ceasefire is guaranteed.
HTS-affiliated armed groups raided two nightclubs in Damascus, Syria, violently assaulting people and killing two women.
A recently released CCTV video documents the assault on the Layali Al-Sharq nightclub on April 29. Armed men stormed the club, forced patrons outside, and beat and whipped them at the exit.
Following widespread condemnation on social media, the Syrian Ministry of Interior issued a statement confirming the arrest of those involved.
Another attack took place last night at the Al-Karawan nightclub, using similar tactics. Armed men stormed the facility, opened fire, and killed two women, injuring several others.
Meanwhile, sectarian violence against minorities persists, along with the ongoing abduction and disappearance of individuals, particularly women.

🟡 NEW: Berlin police banned the display of Soviet symbols on May 8, the day marking the defeat over fascism in 1945. Explicitly banned are the display of USSR flags and WWII Red Army songs, which called for the fight against Nazi Germany. In doing so, Germany censors the representation of those who, on this day in 1945, officially defeated Nazi Germany in Berlin. The Berlin police imposed similar bans on May 8 in recent years, since the beginning of the Ukraine war.

At least 25 people have been killed as Israeli occupation forces commit a new massacre in Gaza City, bombing a restaurant and a crowded market. The death toll includes many children, bringing the total number of people killed today to over 63.
Israel has been accused of using food as a weapon of war. On one hand, it enforces a total blockade, condemning Palestinians to starvation; on the other, it bombs restaurants and markets, killing those seeking food.

“Destroy Tel Aviv airport!” — A firefighter reacts to Israel’s massive bombing of Sana’a civilian airport in Yemen, calling on the Yemeni resistance to respond to the attack.
The head of Yemen’s Supreme Political Council, Mahdi al-Mashat, promised that Yemen’s response to the US-Israeli attack would be “devastating and painful, beyond what the Israeli and American enemies can endure.”
He also addressed the Israeli public, saying: “From now on, stay in your shelters or leave for your countries immediately. Your failed government will no longer be able to protect you.”

🟡 BREAKING: Footage allegedly shows Indian airstrikes inside Pakistan. Just minutes ago, India’s armed forces launched “Operation Sindoor” targeting sites in Pakistan. A Pakistani military spokesperson says India struck three locations.
The strikes follow rising tensions after last month’s attack in Kashmir, where suspected militants opened fire at a popular tourist spot, killing 26 Indian nationals and injuring 10.
“We know Israel is an occupier, and we know it’s trading with our blood.” Druze Syrian women held a protest in Suwayda, Syria, to denounce the ongoing sectarian violence targeting the Druze community.
Recently, HTS-affiliated armed groups have attacked Druze communities in several locations across Syria. Videos have surfaced online documenting the humiliations and torture they have endured.
Despite an agreement between state officials and Druze leaders, the sectarian violence continues. In Suwayda, according to interviews with local communities, they are organizing themselves to protect the city and prevent “experiencing the same massacres as in the Syrian Coast.”
Israel is exploiting sectarian violence to divide Syria. On Saturday, the Israeli army announced the distribution of “humanitarian aid” to people in Suwayda. There are also reports of wounded Syrians being transported to hospitals, possibly in Israeli-occupied territories — a tactic reminiscent of those used during the Syrian war.
“My daughter died because of the siege.” – People in Gaza continue to starve to death as the Israeli blockade on humanitarian aid remains uninterrupted for over two months.
According to the latest statement released by Gaza’s Media Office, at least 57 Palestinians — mostly children — have died due to malnutrition. The statement also condemned the “continued use of food by the Israeli occupation as a weapon of war,” and urged the international community to intervene.
This is the longest continuous total siege Israel has imposed since its genocidal war on Gaza began. According to UNRWA, more than 66,000 children in the Gaza Strip are suffering from severe malnutrition “due to the starvation policy that Israel continues to implement.”
Israel is blocking the entry of humanitarian aid into the Strip, including food, water, medicine, and other essential supplies. Despite international condemnation, no country has chosen to airdrop humanitarian aid into the Strip, as happened during the first blockade in 2024.
🟡 BREAKING: Israel has issued displacement orders for Yemeni people near Sana'a International Airport in preparation for airstrikes. This marks the first time Israel has issued such orders for Yemen.
After joining the US-led assault on Yemen last night, Israel has reaffirmed its intention to continue participating in the offensive today.
Anti-communist erasure of history is working at full speed in Eastern Europe. A few days before the 80th anniversary of the Red Army’s victory over the Wehrmacht in Berlin, we look back at the escalation of destruction of Soviet monuments under “de-communization” laws.
Around 4,000 such monuments were erected in European countries after World War II to commemorate the sacrifice of the Red Army soldiers — while 3,000 have been pulled down to date — according to the Russia-based “Never Forget” project.

Fascist football hooligans from Club Brugge came to Brussels to terrorize a working-class, migrant neighborhood but got run off the streets. On Sunday, around 800 far-right supporters stormed metro stations, looted stores, chanted racist slurs, and attacked residents in Molenbeek and Jette ahead of the Belgian Cup final, targeting people of foreign origin. But the neighborhood fought back. Videos show local youths confronting, chasing, and beating the invaders, driving them out of the streets they tried to claim.
Despite knowing these supporters are widely associated with racism and violence, two Molenbeek residents, both Muslim women and one a Syrian asylum seeker, stopped to assist an injured Bruges supporter. They called an ambulance, offered water, and stayed with him until help arrived.

Mexico’s president has confirmed that Trump tried to launch a military intervention under the guise of “fighting drug trafficking.” However, he backed down after she stated that Mexico’s sovereignty is non-negotiable.
Trump has attempted to portray a tough image in which US plans are imposed on others without discussion, though behind closed doors he has backtracked when faced with a strong opponent.
