🟡NOW: Police cracked down hard in Istanbul as protesters attempted to storm the heavily barricaded Taksim Square. Protesters repeatedly pushed against police lines but were met with relentless tear gas barrages.
If protesters break through, it will mark the first time in over a decade that protest crowds have reached Taksim Square—a site of historic political significance in Turkey. The government banned all protests there following the 2013 Gezi Park uprising, and police have maintained a 24/7 presence ever since.
Taksim Square was the epicenter of the 2013 protests, the largest anti-government revolt in modern Turkish history. That uprising led to a total ban on demonstrations in the area.
The latest wave of unrest erupted after the arrest of CHP politician Ekrem İmamoğlu, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s top political rival. But the protests have outgrown party lines, fueled by years of Erdoğan’s systematic crackdown on opposition politicians.
On this day in 1947, US Cold War paranoia reached a new height when President Harry Truman signed Executive Order 9835 to tackle alleged communist infiltration. Also known as the “Loyalty Order,” it paved the way for 3 million government employees to come under investigation and was the prelude to the anti-communist witch hunts known as McCarthyism led by Republican Senator Joseph McCarthy.
The order enabled the FBI to research the associations and beliefs of federal employees. If “derogatory information” was found, the FBI could launch investigations using confidential witnesses. Employees could be fired if “reasonable doubts” existed about their loyalty to the US. There was no right to appeal decisions made by loyalty boards.
300 government employees were dismissed for allegedly being a security risk, while 5,000 offered voluntary resignations following investigations, many of which took place during humiliating public congressional hearings.

“We are living a second Nakba” – Palestinians in the West Bank are facing mass displacement as Israel’s ongoing military aggression and siege continue.
While Israel resumes its genocidal war on the Gaza Strip, its military operation “Iron Wall” in the West Bank has entered its 60th consecutive day. The Israeli army is expanding its targets daily, from Jenin to Tulkarem, Nur Shams, and Nablus.
Just yesterday, Israeli forces ordered around 50 families in Tulkarem to evacuate their homes and announced plans to demolish 95 houses in the Jenin refugee camp. In the Jenin camp, 100% of the roads have been bulldozed, along with 80% of the roads in the city.
More than 50 Palestinians have been killed in the operation, among them eight children, and more than 40,000 Palestinians remain displaced. According to a UN press release, Palestinians face a serious risk of mass ethnic cleansing as Israel moves forward with its long-standing plan to seize Palestinian lands.

🟡 NEW: Israel blows up an entire hospital in Gaza.
Israel’s “most moral army in the world” has destroyed the Turkish-Palestinian Friendship Hospital in Gaza. The hospital was Gaza’s only specialized cancer hospital and was considered one of the largest hospitals in the besieged strip. In July 2024, the hospital was turned into a military base by the Israeli army after being forced to shut down due to a lack of fuel caused by Israel’s total siege.

Haitian police repressed a mass protest against insecurity yesterday in Port-au-Prince. Residents of working-class neighborhoods came out with machetes, expressing their readiness to defend themselves against criminal organizations (Viv Ansanm) that have occupied much of the capital.
The US-funded intervention, led by Kenyan troops, has been ongoing for months, yet Haiti’s security and humanitarian situation has only worsened. Now, residents have grown weary of both the authorities and the gangs.

🟡 NOW: Tensions exploded in Türkiye’s parliament as AKP and CHP lawmakers clashed over the arrest of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu. The heated exchange led to the suspension of the session.
İmamoğlu, a key rival to Erdoğan, was detained on corruption and terrorism charges, which critics say are politically driven. The government claims to have evidence of a corruption case worth billions of dollars but has yet to present any.
Thousands have taken to the streets in protest, fearing he will be replaced by a government-appointed trustee. This tactic has been used before against elected Kurdish mayors, who were removed from office and replaced by state officials.
İmamoğlu is widely seen as the strongest challenger to Erdoğan in the 2028 presidential elections.

M23 rebels have seized Walikale, a strategic mining town in eastern DR Congo. This is the furthest west the group has pushed in its ongoing offensive. The attack began after the presidents of Rwanda and DR Congo met in Qatar, where they made public claims of supporting a ceasefire. Within hours, heavy fighting broke out, forcing Congolese forces to retreat and allowing M23 to take control. The town’s capture gives them access to key roads leading toward Kisangani and Kindu, strengthening their hold over the region’s lucrative mineral trade.
The offensive is part of a broader campaign that has already claimed Goma and Bukavu. With over 7 million people displaced, the humanitarian crisis deepens as violence spreads. Local militias fighting alongside the Congolese army have tried to resist, but M23’s advance remains largely unchecked. The UN has accused Rwanda of backing the group. Meanwhile, reports of executions and atrocities continue to surface.

🟡 NOW: Mass protests have erupted in Istanbul after authorities arrested Ekrem İmamoğlu, the main opposition leader from the CHP.
Despite a multi-day protest ban, the sheer size of the crowds has overwhelmed the government’s crackdown.
Critics call it a political coup—Erdoğan’s AKP is tightening its grip by silencing the opposition. İmamoğlu faces charges of corruption and aiding the Kurdish PKK.

Türkiye braces for a third night of mass protests, the potentially most intense one yet. Opposition parties vowed to mobilize “millions”—despite a government-imposed ban on public gatherings and an expected police crackdown.
The unrest erupted after the arrest of CHP politician İmamoğlu, the top political rival of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. But the protests have spiraled beyond party lines, fueled by years of Erdoğan’s systematic legal assault on opposition politicians.
In 2020 and 2021 alone, the government has removed 66 mayors from the pro-Kurdish HDP. The HDP, facing a closure case, transferred its political activities to the DEM party, which secured control of 10 provinces in the 2024 local elections. The CHP won 35 provinces, making İmamoğlu’s arrest a dramatic escalation in Erdoğan’s grip on power.
Labeling the protests as “street terrorism,” Erdoğan vowed “not to give in.” Some speculate that the unrest could swell into a full-scale uprising akin to the 2013 Gezi Park protests.
“Where is the world?” – Palestinians in Gaza are currently under massive bombardment by the Israeli army across the entire besieged strip.
Since Tuesday, over 710 Palestinians have been killed in a military assault that Israeli leaders promise will be “unprecedented.” UNICEF denounced the killing of more than 200 children, with numbers expected to rise as many bodies remain trapped under the rubble.
The Israeli army has issued multiple displacement orders and expanded its ground invasion from both the north and south of the besieged Gaza Strip. Defense Minister Katz has announced plans to permanently occupy and annex parts of the territory. Meanwhile, for the second time since Israel broke the truce, Palestinian resistance groups have fired rockets toward Israeli settlements.

Turkish police launched an excessive crackdown, trying to suffocate the mass protests before they could eventually turn into a full-blown uprising. The protests spread to at least 32 of Türkiye’s 81 provinces. Police arrested 150 people—those involved in the protests or for posts on social media.
The arrest of opposition leader Ekrem İmamoğlu, President Erdoğan’s primary political rival, sparked a wave of protests across the country. İmamoğlu’s CHP party called the arrest a “coup attempt.”
While the CHP backs the protests, they are also fueled by a broad, non-partisan movement. The pro-Kurdish DEM party has also mobilized for the demonstrations. Students, youths, and women, standing firm against police repression dominate the frontlines.

On this day in 1968, Israel suffered its first major military defeat against the Palestinian resistance movement.
Just a few hundred Palestinian guerrilla fighters, together with the Jordanian Armed Forces, fended off an Israeli army attempting to invade the east bank of the Jordan River.
The Battle of Karameh not only marks a major symbolic victory for the Palestinian resistance but also serves as a stark reminder that the state of Israel can be forced to recalculate its assumptions.

Clashes escalate as mass protests sweep across Türkiye in response to the arrest of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, the country’s main opposition leader. Protests erupted against President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s ruling AKP government, with the largest protests concentrated in Istanbul and the capital, Ankara.
University students are leading some of the most intense confrontations. At Ankara’s Middle East Technical University (ODTÜ), protesters attempted to break through police barricades.
Police forces responded with rubber bullets, water cannons, and tear gas. In Izmir, authorities have banned all protests, gatherings, and press statements calling for protests between March 21 and 25.
İmamoğlu, a politician from Türkiye's second-largest party, the CHP, was arrested on charges of terrorism and corruption. Critics call the move a political coup by the AKP, which has long been locked in a head-to-head battle with the CHP in presidential elections.

Germany has reopened its Damascus embassy after 13 years, just as Syria’s HTS-led government tightens its grip through sectarian pogroms against Alawites. After years of sanctions, Berlin is now engaging with and funding Syria’s new rulers.
The move comes days after Germany announced €300 million in aid to the HTS-led government, effectively stabilizing its rule. Syria’s new government has become a Western favorite due to its collaboration with Israel and attacks on Lebanon, with its backers eager to whitewash their repression.
Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock traveled to Syria to officiate the reopening of Germany’s embassy, marking her second visit since HTS seized power. Her trip highlights Berlin’s deepening engagement with Syria’s new rulers, reinforcing an aggressive regional policy that includes unwavering support for Israel’s genocide in Gaza and the normalization of HTS rule.
Germany is even pushing for her to become the next head of the United Nations General Assembly.
