✅ Banda recorded 48.2°C on May 19, the highest temperature in the district since 1951.
✅ It topped India’s temperature charts multiple times in April–May.

🔆 Inside the Heat Trap: Why Banda is Heating Up

📍 Record Heat in Banda (Uttar Pradesh)
✅ Banda recorded 48.2°C on May 19, the highest temperature in the district since 1951.
✅ It topped India’s temperature charts multiple times in April–May.

🔆 Major Causes Behind Extreme Heat

📍 Mining & Blasting
✅ Hills are blasted using explosives and excessive sand mining occurs in the Ken River.
✅ Ecological destruction weakens natural cooling systems.

📍 Dust & Debris Clouds
✅ Blasting activities create massive dust clouds.
✅ Suspended particles trap heat near the surface and reduce natural cooling.

📍 River Degradation
✅ Sand removal reduces river recharge capacity.
✅ Water runoff increases while groundwater recharge declines.
✅ Ken River’s depth has drastically reduced in many stretches.

📍 Groundwater Collapse
✅ Depleted aquifers and lack of recharge have pushed groundwater levels down significantly.
✅ Dry soil and rocks absorb and radiate more heat.

📍 Deforestation
✅ Rapid forest cover loss has reduced shade and moisture release.
✅ Trees help cool the atmosphere through evapotranspiration and wind regulation.

🔆 Impact of Heat Trap

✅ Increased heatwave frequency and intensity.
✅ Water scarcity and agricultural stress.
✅ Rising health risks like heatstroke and dehydration.
✅ Ecological imbalance and biodiversity loss.

🔆 Way Forward

✅ Strict regulation of illegal mining and blasting.
✅ River restoration and groundwater recharge measures.
✅ Large-scale afforestation and urban greening.
✅ Heat Action Plans and climate-resilient infrastructure.
✅ Sustainable land and water management practices.

🔆 AUGUST DECLARATION, 1917

📍 Background
🟢 The Lucknow Pact (1916) and the Home Rule Movement intensified the demand for self-government in India.
🟢 The British government felt the need to make political concessions in response to the growing nationalist movement.

📍 Key Provisions
🟢 On 20 August 1917, Edwin Montagu, Secretary of State for India, announced the British government’s new policy.
🟢 The policy aimed at the gradual development of self-governing institutions and the progressive realisation of responsible government in India as an integral part of the British Empire.

📍 Significance
🟢 Marked a shift towards the gradual introduction of responsible government in India.
🟢 Recognised self-government as a legitimate political objective rather than treating the demand itself as seditious.
🟢 Responsible government implied greater accountability of the executive to elected representatives.

📍 Indian Nationalist Reaction
🟢 The term “progressive realisation” implied gradual implementation without a definite timeline.
🟢 Nationalist leaders resented the assumption that the British government would determine the pace and extent of India’s self-government.
🟢 The declaration did not promise immediate self-government or establish a fixed deadline for its achievement.

📍 UPSC PRELIMS QUICK REVISION
🟢 Date: 20 August 1917
🟢 Announced by: Edwin Montagu
🟢 Position: Secretary of State for India
🟢 Core objective: Progressive realisation of responsible government in India.

🔆 TRIBAL REBELLIONS: REASONS & WEAKNESSES

📍 Impact of British Policies on Tribal Areas

🟢 Forest Laws and Restrictions

• Establishment of the Forest Department (1864) and Forest Act (1865) curtailed tribal customary rights and opened forests for commercial use.
• By 1900, around 20% of India’s land came under forest administration.
• Jhum (shifting cultivation) was banned or restricted in reserved forests from 1867.
• Restrictions were imposed on timber use, grazing and subsistence hunting.

🟢 Commercialisation of Forests

• Roads and commercial exploitation encouraged the entry of moneylenders, traders, contractors and land-grabbers.
• Demand for oak and timber for the Royal Navy and railway sleepers led to forest conservation measures and the creation of reserved forests.
• Commercial foresters preferred teak, pine and deodar, often replacing trees such as oak and Terminalia, which rural communities used for fuel, fodder, leaf manure and small timber.

🟢 Introduction of Private Property

• Tribal communities traditionally practised community ownership of land and resources.
• British policies introduced private property and required written records, facilitating the dispossession of tribals from jointly owned land.

🟢 Interference in Cultural Practices

• Bans on brewing local liquor affected a source of nutrition and livelihood.
• Leases were granted to outsiders to brew palm liquor.
• Christian missionaries and their activities interfered with traditional tribal customs.

📍 Nature of Tribal Resistance
🟢 These disruptions triggered acts of resistance, subversion and violent uprisings.
🟢 Religion often provided a rallying point, offering tribal peasants self-respect and hope for a better future.

📍 Weaknesses of Tribal Uprisings

🟢 Localised Nature: Uprisings were centred on local grievances and had limited geographical spread; they lacked pan-India characteristics.

🟢 Absence of National Consciousness: Despite shared enemies and grievances, the idea of India as a nation was largely absent. Many sought political autonomy within the Indian Union.

🟢 Limited Leadership: Leadership often came from local zamindars or clan chiefs with a backward-looking outlook, who failed to offer an alternative social order. Examples include the Raja of Vizianagaram’s revolt and the Ahom revolt.

🟢 Inferior Arms and Tactics: Tribal rebels often used bows, arrows and axes against the superior weapons and military tactics of the British.

🟢 British Conciliation: The British pacified sections of the population through concessions and conciliatory measures. For example, Santhal Parganas was created after the Santhal rebellion.

📍 UPSC MAINS QUESTION

Q. Examine how British forest, land and cultural policies contributed to tribal uprisings in colonial India. Discuss the major limitations of these rebellions. (250 words)
