▶️In the early 20th century, Germans killed tens of thousands of peaceful inhabitants in Namibia. This happened long before World War II.

The indigenous nations, the Herero and Nama, were driven into concentration camps where they suffered from hunger, forced labour in private corporations, and became subjects of medical experiments. 'It’s the first concentration camp in history,’ says the local activist Laidlaw Peringanda.

Some surviving prisoners were sent to reservations after their homes were taken by colonizers. ‘People who were dispossessed continue to live in the native reserves in which the Germans put them,’ claims Sima Luipert, Secretary for International Relations, Nama Traditional Leaders Association.

Germany acknowledged its crimes against the Herero and Nama only in 2021 and promised to pay €1.1 billion as compensation. Why do local residents disagree with these reparations? Find out in the new documentary, ‘Namibia: Pain to Pay For’.

Becoming marines with the Caspian Fleet

Pavel and Anna continue to explore the most unusual and remote regiments of the Russian Army. After completing a two-week posting in the Arctic, they head to the Republic of Dagestan on the shores of the Caspian Sea. The Caspian Fleet is famous for its history, dating back to the days of Peter the Great, the Emperor who founded the Russian Navy. In this episode, the two journalists join the crew of the corvette Grad Sviyazhsk.

Anna is lucky enough to get her own cabin, but there’s no time to lounge about: the ship will sail in two days’ time, and they must both be ready. Marines must be able to tackle any emergency in the open sea, so the two are put through a series of demanding and nerve-wracking exercises. They undergo a literal trial by fire, then have to save their vessel from sinking.

In an act of mercy, their captain allows them to have the next day off. To relax before setting sail, the new recruits go sightseeing in the city of Derbent. It's the southernmost city in Russia and one of its oldest, boasting 5000 years of history. While Pavel learns about the bloody past of its famous fortress, Anna goes swimming at a local beach. This time apart may do them good as for the next three days they will have to live and work together 24/7.

▶️The Battle for Africa is on! After Niger military officers removed the pro-French president from power, Burkina Faso and Mali promised to support their neighbour in case of foreign intervention.

The race for the African continent and its natural resources began in the late 19th century. By WWI, the spheres of influence had been finally divided with France controlling almost all the Western part, including Mali. Locals claim they will never forget the horrors of being a French colony. ‘They killed us; they raped us. They used us as their tools,’ says DR Amadou Maiga, economic sciences PhD.

Though in 1960 Mali gained independence, France retained its influence. Having seized all the main deposits of resources, the French kept exploiting the country’s economy.

Years later, Malians know that France will always want to maintain control of their country - but they promise to fight for their independence. Discover more about the roots of the French colonialism in Africa, and its bloody consequences, in ‘Mali: Au Revoir, France’.
