▶️Work on Arctic ice floes is especially dangerous. In 1937, a Soviet drifting station opened in the Arctic. Four scientists lived in tents for almost a year and studied the climate of the North Pole. Upon their return, the polar explorers received the titles of Heroes of the USSR.

From that time on, a regular drifting station research program was maintained. However, in 2013, the ice floe on which the men landed began to rapidly deteriorate. They were evacuated by a nuclear-powered icebreaker, but decided not to take any more risks.

Six years later, the research was resumed. But the ice floe held only the research equipment - the scientists lived on a ship that drifted nearby. Find more on the expedition in ‘Going With the Floe’ (2019). This film was chosen in yesterday’s poll.

The Military in the Arctic. Across a frozen sea aboard Russian ATVs

The expedition members spare no effort to haul it from the ice hole. If they don’t, they risk losing a lot of vital fuel. Exposing these vehicles to the most extreme scenarios is exactly the purpose of the Arctic expedition. And the hardest part is yet to begin!

The journey now lies across Laptev and Sannikov Straits. The crew has to check the thickness of the ice constantly.

Tune in to Combat Approved and see how these mighty vehicles reach their destination, and then decide on a daring route back home: directly across the frozen Laptev Sea.

Rocket launch at Plesetsk Cosmodrome

Back in the hangar, Anna and Pavel observe their rocket being assembled. They learn some space industry jargon as well as the meaning behind the Russian Space Forces’ insignia. For the “bloom of the iron flower”, they visit the launch control centre. Anna becomes the first woman to hold one of the keys that launches a rocket.

It turns out that a successful rocket launch in Plesetsk requires a combination of science, religion and superstition. Not long after Anna finds out that a female name is written on all rockets as a lucky charm, a Russian Orthodox priest arrives. He recruits Pavel as a sexton and proceeds to bless the rocket, the mission, and everyone involved.

Fun fact: the spaceport was built in the city of Mirny because its skies are almost always overcast, making it very difficult to spy on the location by satellite. Today, however, Pavel and Anna get lucky: the skies clear for the launch of their rocket, and they are able to admire it in its full glory.

The racers often use old cars as their drifting machines. They invest significant amounts of money in the vehicles, and spare no expense for the pursuit of their passion.

How do their families feel about this dangerous sport? Find out in the film, ‘Come Drift With Me’ (2019).

Joining firefighters at Russia’s Plesetsk Cosmodrome

Opened in 1957, Russia's Plesetsk Cosmodrome has been in operation for 60 years. Unlike Baikanur in Kazakhstan, the Plesetsk site is on Russian territory. Its use has increased since the end of the Soviet Union despite still only launching unmanned rockets.

The neighbouring town of Mirny is a high security area requiring a permit to gain entry. Anna and Pavel are fortunate enough to be granted permission. They are even allowed to visit the rocket assembly hangar – but not before they learn the health and safety rules! While Pavel studiously reads a memo, Anna takes a more hands-on approach and joins the spaceport fire brigade. She takes part in a drill, learning to change into a firefighter’s uniform in just 20 seconds and extinguish fires using a hose and a water cannon.
