<!-- SC_OFF -->Whenever I discuss bitcoin with nocoiners there is always one concept that they always find hard to understand: technology by its nature is deflationary, every technological advancement either allows us to do something we could not do before, or do something more efficiently. Therefore all things over time becomes easier to produce. The cost of producing a loaf of bread today is a fraction of what it used to be. This is true of all things that are easy to produce (phones, clothes, food, everything) while things that are hard to produce (land, Picasso paintings, gold, bitcoin) are not affected the same way. Meanwhile there is inflation in the fiat monetary system that makes the currency we use worth less and less every year. Now, the thing people find hard to understand is the way these inflationary and deflationary forces interact. People do not "feel" the inflation because TVs, iPhones, H&M shirts, and all other easily produced goods remain relatively cheap in fiat terms. Inflation only crosses their mind when talking about things like the housing market. But they still have a misguided view of inflation because they can still afford "luxury goods" like new iPhones. So as the cost of production falls and the value of fiat currency falls with it, it acts like a masking mechanism to hide just how bad inflation actually is. It is a race to the bottom that tricks people into accepting the fact that in real terms they are far poorer than previous generations, but since they have nicer toys and access to abundant cheap to produce food they accept it. This concept is difficult to understand, especially for people who have not done their homework. Bitcoiners often understand this once they begin to understand Austrian economis, but the average nocoiner has never thought about this before. Jeff Booth describes this perfectly in his book The price of tomorrow, but his explanation is thorough and accurate, and as a result takes a whole book to describe. Therefore I feel like we need a term to describe this concept. Giving it a name will make it easier to spread and refer to. But I don't know what that name should be. The inflation/deflation paradox?
