1/ The European Central Bank announced an interest rate cut for the first time since 2019, lowering the deposit rate from 4% to 3.75%. ECB President Christine Lagarde stated the rate cut is based on strong economic forecasts and that further cuts would depend on continued downward inflation trends. May's been a chilly month for centralized crypto exchanges, folks! Trading volumes dipped by a whopping 20.1% to $5.27 trillion, turning up the heat for traders looking for some spark in volatility. The standout decline was seen both in spot markets, where trades plummeted by 21.6% to $1.57 trillion, and on the derivatives front, skidding by 19.4% to $3.69 trillion according to CCData. Imagine trying to catch big moves when Bitcoin decides to snooze post-halving, bringing down its volatility to near bedtime levels!
Now talking shop - Binance still holds the throne with 34.6% of global trade volume, yet even the king wasn't immune to May's trading tumble, dropping close to 20% to $545 billion. On the flip side, we've got Bybit, inching up in market share to 7.36%, despite a 12.7% dip in trading volumes to $116 billion. As for derivatives, Binance leads the pack dominating 45.5% of the market. Traders on OKX and Bitget are also in the game, clutching at straws with 21.3% and 14.5% market share respectively.
