The Little Thief in the Pantry

A Little Thief in the Pantry is in the collection A Christmas Hamper: A Volume of Pictures and Stories for Little Folks, published in 1889 by T. Nelson and Sons by various unattributed authors. It's a lesson about perspective, and a little girl's compassion for a mouse who learns the difference between stealing and giving. Most importantly, obey your mother!
"MOTHER dear,” said a little mouse one day, “I think the people in our house must be very kind; don’t you? They leave such nice things for us in the larder.”

There was a twinkle in the mother’s eye as she replied,—

“Well, my child, no doubt they are very well in their way, but I don’t think they are quite as fond of us as you seem to think. Now remember, Greywhiskers, I have absolutely forbidden you to put your nose above the ground unless I am with you, for kind as the people are, I shouldn’t be at all surprised if they tried to catch you.”

Greywhiskers twitched his tail with scorn; he was quite sure he knew how to take care of himself, and he didn’t mean to trot meekly after his mother’s tail all his life. So as soon as she had curled herself up for an afternoon nap he stole away, and scampered across the pantry shelves.

Ah! here was something particularly good to-day. A large iced cake stood far back upon the shelf, and Greywhiskers licked his lips as he sniffed it. Across the top of the cake there were words written in pink sugar; but as Greywhiskers could not read, he did not know that he was nibbling at little Miss Ethel’s birthday cake. But he did feel a little guilty when he heard his mother calling. Off he ran, and was back in the nest again by the time his mother had finished rubbing her eyes after her nap.

She took Greywhiskers up to the pantry then, and when she saw the hole in the cake she seemed a little annoyed.

“Some mouse has evidently been here before us,” she said, but of course she never guessed that it was her own little son.

The next day the naughty little mouse again popped up to the pantry when his mother was asleep; but at first he could find nothing at all to eat, though there was a most delicious smell of toasted cheese.

Presently he found a dear little wooden house, and there hung the cheese, just inside it.

In ran Greywhiskers, but, oh! “click” went the little wooden house, and mousie was caught fast in a trap.

When the morning came, the cook, who had set the trap, lifted it from the shelf, and then called a pretty little girl to come and see the thief who had eaten her cake.

“What are you going to do with him?” asked Ethel.
“Why, drown him, my dear, to be sure.”
The tears came into the little girl’s pretty blue eyes.
“You didn’t know it was stealing, did you, mousie dear?” she said.
“No,” squeaked Greywhiskers sadly; “indeed I didn’t.”

Cook’s back was turned for a moment, and in that moment tender-hearted little Ethel lifted the lid of the trap, and out popped mousie.

Oh! how quickly he ran home to his mother, and how she comforted and petted him until he began to forget his fright; and then she made him promise never to disobey her again, and you may be sure he never did.

The Purpose by Gorchev
Translated by Andrey Summers

When a person is all but ready to emerge into the world, God appears to him with a giant, fur hat in His hands.

"Draw," says God, and the person pulls from the hat a paper with his Purpose written on it. Then, off the person goes into the world. Here, he looks to see what his Purpose might be, but the paper's gone- it didn't follow him here. He didn't even have time to read it.

For some time, the person remains hopeful that the Purpose might eventually drop out after him, and so he crawls around monitoring his mother, tirelessly, but no- nothing of the sort seems to fall out of her. So, apparently, he has to use his own round head. Ears and everything. That's why he's a person anyway, and not a six-legged piece of shit, say.

What's life to shit on legs? Its Purpose is imprinted square and certain, like the program inside your washing machine, for doing colored laundry. A person, meanwhile, has to figure it all out himself. All himself. The poor bastard.

It's good when his Purpose is simple- to have a son, plant a tree, or what have you. Or, let's say, get sick as a kid, and die. Easy. But what if he's predestined to axe down an old lady in the Sennaya Square, so that later someone can write a novel about it? And what if he's not, but he axed her anyway?

Really, figuring out your Purpose in life isn't that difficult: if a person continually does something for no reason, if he doesn't get paid for it, and fuck if anyone even needs it, that means that this, in fact, is his Purpose. It's different with people that refuse to do anything for no reason, of course, it's more complicated for them.

Achievement of your Purpose differs from other pass-times in that the reward for success does not exist on this Earth. You'll either get it after Death, or never maybe, it's not even that important.

But to Achieve his Purpose, a person needs to live somehow- eat things, and so forth. Thus, he's forced to fuck around with all the other nonsense, the reward for which is, conversely, given right now or, worst case, on Monday. But a person can't even do this right, because there he is fucking around with his other nonsense, and suddenly he feels that it's time to Fulfill his Purpose for a while. In this case, he's forced to immediately drop everything, send everyone to hell, disconnect the phone, and Fulfill. Because this, right here, is the only reason he even exists. There are no others, and never will be.

Yet people keep hammering on the door, tearing apart the phone, yelling, banging their fists on the desk at him, and not giving him money. This is because they, themselves, aren't Fulfilling their own Purpose properly, but half-assed-ly: they have a family, kids, business, evil mother-in-law, work, no time. And if they see a person Achieving his Purpose effectively, they turn green. Because they know well what happens to a person who Doesn't Achieve his Purpose. Or at least they can guess.

People die for only two reasons: Either they've Achieved their Purpose in life, or Creation had understood, that they don't even intend to Achieve it. Nobody fucks with Creation.

Story. Рассказы на английском

An Arrest by Ambrose Bierce

Having murdered his brother-in-law, Orrin Brower of Kentucky was a fugitive from justice. From the county jail where he had been confined to await his trial he had escaped by knocking down his jailer with an iron bar, robbing him of his keys and, opening the outer door, walking out into the night. The jailer being unarmed, Brower got no weapon with which to defend his recovered liberty. As soon as he was out of the town he had the folly to enter a forest; this was many years ago, when that region was wilder than it is now.

The night was pretty dark, with neither moon nor stars visible, and as Brower had never dwelt thereabout, and knew nothing of the lay of the land, he was, naturally, not long in losing himself. He could not have said if he were getting farther away from the town or going back to it--a most important matter to Orrin Brower. He knew that in either case a posse of citizens with a pack of bloodhounds would soon be on his track and his chance of escape was very slender; but he did not wish to assist in his own pursuit. Even an added hour of freedom was worth having.

Suddenly he emerged from the forest into an old road, and there before him saw, indistinctly, the figure of a man, motionless in the gloom. It was too late to retreat: the fugitive felt that at the first movement back toward the wood he would be, as he afterward explained, "filled with buckshot." So the two stood there like trees, Brower nearly suffocated by the activity of his own heart; the other--the emotions of the other are not recorded.

A moment later--it may have been an hour--the moon sailed into a patch of unclouded sky and the hunted man saw that visible embodiment of Law lift an arm and point significantly toward and beyond him. He understood. Turning his back to his captor, he walked submissively away in the direction indicated, looking to neither the right nor the left; hardly daring to breathe, his head and back actually aching with a prophecy of buckshot.

Brower was as courageous a criminal as ever lived to be hanged; that was shown by the conditions of awful personal peril in which he had coolly killed his brother-in-law. It is needless to relate them here; they came out at his trial, and the revelation of his calmness in confronting them came near to saving his neck. But what would you have?--when a brave man is beaten, he submits.

So they pursued their journey jailward along the old road through the woods. Only once did Brower venture a turn of the head: just once, when he was in deep shadow and he knew that the other was in moonlight, he looked backward. His captor was Burton Duff, the jailer, as white as death and bearing upon his brow the livid mark of the iron bar. Orrin Brower had no further curiosity.

Eventually they entered the town, which was all alight, but deserted; only the women and children remained, and they were off the streets. Straight toward the jail the criminal held his way. Straight up to the main entrance he walked, laid his hand upon the knob of the heavy iron door, pushed it open without command, entered and found himself in the presence of a half-dozen armed men. Then he turned. Nobody else entered.

On a table in the corridor lay the dead body of Burton Duff.
