Christmas Day Tragedy: Dozens feared d£ad as plane crashes in Kazakhstan
Dozens of people have died following the crash of a passenger plane carrying 67 people in Kazakhstan on Christmas Day, December 25, 2024.
The Central Asian country’s Emergencies Ministry reported that 25 people, including three children, survived the crash.
The plane was flying from Azerbaijan to Russia when it crashed and caught fire near the city of Aktau. The cause of the accident remains unknown.
Reports suggest the plane was diverted due to heavy fog and was forced to make an emergency landing about 3km (1.8 miles) from Aktau.
Verified footage shows the plane descending rapidly with its landing gear deployed. Moments later, it appears to attempt a landing before a massive fireball erupts.
The plane had 62 passengers and 5 crew members on board, mostly Azerbaijani nationals, along with some passengers from Russia, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan, according to the transport ministry.

The EFCC on Monday, December 24, 2024, arraigned a businessman, Akindele Akintoye before Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court, Maitama, Abuja, on charges bordering on money laundering and contract fraud.
Akintoye, a Managing Director of Atlantic International Refinery and Petrochemical Limited, allegedly collected $35million from the Nigeria Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB) to build a 2000 barrel-per-day refinery, jetty, gas plant, data centre & tank farm at Brass Free Trade Zone, Okpoama community in Brass LGA of Bayelsa State.
He allegedly received the funds through the bank account of Atlantic International Refinery & Petrochemical Limited & channeled the money into personal businesses & bureau de change outlets.
The defendant is facing a four-count charge filed on November 19, 2024. He pleaded “not guilty” after the charges were read to him & Justice Nwite ordered his remand at the Kuje Correctional Centre.
The judge subsequently adjourned the matter till December 31, 2024.
