⚡ Despite Tensions, Neither India Nor Pakistan Want Nuclear War
Neither side wants to be the first to break the nuclear taboo. Analysts say the mutual understanding of catastrophic retaliation acts as a deterrent — for now.
But the buildup of arsenals continues: Pakistan could possess 200 warheads by the end of the decade, while India has enough plutonium for up to 210.
According to Stanford’s Sumit Ganguly, “Any side that uses nuclear weapons would face massive retaliation and suffer unacceptable losses.”
Still, as history shows, the risk — even if low — is always there.

No Retrial, But New Hope: Menendez Brothers Face Resentencing Hearing
The infamous Menendez brothers, imprisoned since the 1990s for killing their parents, may have a shot at a reduced sentence.
A two-day hearing has begun in Los Angeles that will explore whether they deserve parole. The focus is not on their original crime, but on their conduct since and their claims of abuse.
Supporters argue that key evidence of sexual abuse was excluded from the original trial. Critics counter that the murders were premeditated and the brothers have never fully owned up.
As part of the defense, their attorney may call experts and family to testify, while prosecutors prepare to push back forcefully. Whether the brothers themselves will testify remains unclear.

⚡️ No punctures allowed: reinventing tyres for the Moon and Mars
Tyres that work on Earth won’t survive the Moon or Mars. Too cold, too sharp, too punishing.
NASA needs space-proof wheels that won't tear, freeze, or deform. That’s why Michelin is building airless tyres from futuristic materials.
One favourite is nitinol — a memory metal that acts like rubber, ideal for bouncing over craters and back. Bridgestone, meanwhile, is copying camel feet to avoid lunar sand traps.
NASA’s Artemis missions could use them starting 2030. Earth’s benefit? Ultra-durable bike and motorcycle tyres, already in development.
Because if it works on the Moon, it’ll definitely survive your commute.

⚡ Poland: Russian agents set Warsaw shopping centre on fire
Poland has blamed Russia’s secret services for a major fire at a Warsaw shopping centre last year that destroyed over 1,400 businesses.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk said the arson was ordered from Russia, with suspects now in custody or under search.
Authorities believe the operation was directed by someone inside Russia, and tied to similar sabotage in Lithuania.
NATO accuses Moscow of "hybrid warfare" aimed at undermining European support for Ukraine.

⚡ Soviet-era Kosmos 482 likely re-entered Earth's atmosphere after 52 years in orbit
The European Space Agency (ESA) has announced that a fragment of the Soviet-era spacecraft Kosmos 482 has "most likely" re-entered Earth's atmosphere after spending over five decades in orbit.
Kosmos 482 was launched in 1972 with the aim of reaching Venus but failed to escape Earth’s gravity and broke into four pieces, which continued orbiting the planet. According to the EU Space Surveillance and Tracking (SST) centre, the lander segment of the spacecraft is believed to have re-entered at around 06:16 GMT on Saturday (07:16 BST).
The exact re-entry location remains unknown, and it is unclear whether the object burned up entirely or partially survived the descent. However, experts say it’s improbable any debris hit land, given that 70% of Earth is covered by water.
ESA analyst Stijn Lemmens said the lander had a durable heat shield meant for Venus' harsh conditions, which could have helped it survive re-entry. Still, its parachute system likely deteriorated during its 50+ years in space.
Kosmos 482 joins the list of spacecraft returning uncontrolled to Earth, such as China's Long March 5B rocket booster (2022) and the Tiangong-1 space station (2018). Lemmens urged that future missions include controlled re-entry mechanisms to avoid risks.

⚡️ Zelensky reacts cautiously as Putin calls for Istanbul talks
President Zelensky has called Putin’s surprise proposal for direct talks in Istanbul a “positive sign” — but stressed that Ukraine still expects Russia to confirm a 30-day ceasefire starting Monday. His measured response contrasts with growing concern that Moscow is simply stalling.
Meanwhile, President Trump hailed the news on Truth Social, calling it “a potentially great day for Russia and Ukraine”. Trump’s next move could determine whether the talks lead to real peace or more delay.
Analysts warn Moscow could use negotiations to weaken Ukraine’s defense — while ramping up drone and missile strikes.

⚡️Mexico vs Google: The ‘Gulf of America’ fight escalates
Mexico has sued Google for changing “Gulf of Mexico” to “Gulf of America” on maps shown in the U.S. The update came after Trump signed an executive order renaming the body of water — because, in his words, “it’s ours.”
Google says it just follows official naming guidelines. Mexico’s President says it’s overreach and demanded a reversal. So far, Google hasn’t responded.
Next on Trump’s agenda? Calling the Persian Gulf the “Arabian Gulf.” Iran’s reaction: furious.

⚡️Robert Prevost becomes Pope Leo XIV — America’s first pope makes history
Chicago-born Robert Prevost has been elected as Pope Leo XIV, becoming the first American pope in Catholic history. Known for his work in Peru and progressive stance on reform, the 69-year-old was met with thunderous applause at St Peter’s Square.
“May peace be with all of you,” he said from the Vatican balcony — his first message as pontiff. The Vatican’s decision marks a geographical and ideological shift.
Donald Trump celebrated the election, calling it a “great honour” and a milestone for American Catholics.

⚡️ Merz fails in first chancellor vote — shock setback for German conservatives
Friedrich Merz, leader of Germany’s CDU, has failed to secure the 316 votes needed to become chancellor, despite his coalition holding a majority in the Bundestag. Merz received only 310 votes, with 18 expected backers — likely from coalition partner SPD — breaking ranks.
It marks the first failed chancellor vote since the post-war founding of the Federal Republic in 1949. The Bundestag now enters a 14-day window to elect a chancellor by absolute majority, or potentially proceed with a relative majority vote.
Merz’s defeat is seen as a humiliation, undermining his attempt to offer stable leadership after last year’s government collapse. The far-right AfD, which came second in the February election, capitalised immediately. Leader Alice Weidel called the result proof of a "weak and rejected coalition".

⚡️ Trump wants to reopen Alcatraz – experts call it symbolic, costly, and impossible
President Donald Trump has reignited debate around America's most infamous prison — Alcatraz — by calling for its reopening as a maximum-security facility for “vicious and repeat criminals.” Once home to gangsters like Al Capone, the San Francisco Bay island closed in 1963 due to sky-high operational costs and poor infrastructure. Trump now frames it as a potential symbol of "law and order" amid rising crime concerns.
But experts — including former Bureau of Prisons officials — call the idea unworkable. The island lacks basic modern prison infrastructure: no sewage system, no reliable electricity, crumbling concrete, and cells too small for today’s standards. The estimated cost per inmate could exceed $500/day, compared to $120–$160 in federal prisons today.
Justice Department officials said they’re “reviewing options,” but even Trump himself admitted the place is “rotting.” Critics argue this is more political theater than practical policy.

Trump Plans 100% Tariffs on Foreign-Made Films
Donald Trump has proposed a 100% tariff on films made outside the United States, claiming the domestic film industry is in sharp decline. The president said he would meet with Hollywood executives before finalizing the plan, which could affect major productions filmed abroad.
The measure is intended to revive U.S.-based filmmaking but has raised global concerns, especially in the UK, Canada, and Australia, where many U.S. studios currently shoot to save costs. It remains unclear if the tariffs would apply to streaming content or U.S. productions filmed overseas.

⚡️ Polish Government Pushes Civilian Training Amid Russian Threat
With Russia’s war in Ukraine ongoing and NATO's future under question, Poland is preparing its citizens for worst-case scenarios. Weekly training sessions led by the Polish army are teaching civilians how to fight, survive gas attacks, and administer first aid.
The government is also spending nearly 5% of GDP on defence and expanding its military forces significantly. Some Poles express readiness to defend their homeland, but surveys show widespread anxiety and reluctance to engage in conflict. Rising concern over US troop withdrawals and Trump’s foreign policy has prompted Poland to seek new alliances in Europe.

Trump highlighted declines in illegal border crossings and falling inflation, while dismissing poor approval ratings as "fake polls". Despite economic concerns and a wave of legal challenges to his immigration policies, Trump’s core base remains loyal.

⚡️ Paris: Crypto Mogul’s Family Attacked in Failed Daylight Abduction
A failed kidnapping attempt in eastern Paris has again spotlighted threats facing crypto figures in France.
On Tuesday, three masked men attacked the daughter and young grandson of a cryptocurrency company executive — reportedly Paymium’s co-founder — but fled after a violent struggle. The woman’s husband was assaulted while defending his family.
Bystanders were initially hesitant to help, but soon intervened, prompting the gang to abandon the attempt and flee in a van. A replica firearm was recovered from the scene.
The attack follows a recent rise in crypto-related abductions, including one where a victim had a finger cut off. French police are treating the latest incident as part of a wider pattern of organized crypto-targeted crime.

Kremlin Bombs While Talking Peace — Turkey Talks Set for Thursday
While pushing for talks “without preconditions,” the Kremlin continues bombing Ukrainian territory. European leaders had demanded a ceasefire by midnight as a prerequisite for negotiations. Instead, Russia launched dozens of drone and air strikes, notably 50 near Pokrovsk. Despite this, Ukraine and Russia are still planning a summit in Turkey this Thursday.
Donald Trump has stated he may attend, and Zelenskyy has confirmed his presence. Russia, however, has not confirmed if Putin will show up.

Tariff ceasefire: US and China pull back in trade war
The US and China have agreed to drastically reduce import tariffs after a high-level meeting in Switzerland, marking the first major de-escalation in their long trade feud.
US tariffs on Chinese goods drop from 145% to 30%, while China’s duties fall from 125% to 10%.
China will also resume critical exports to the US. The US maintains a 20% fentanyl-related surcharge.
If no new deal is struck, tariffs could rise again in 90 days — but both sides say they want cooperation, not decoupling.

⚡ Zelensky invites Putin to Istanbul after Trump demands talks
President Zelensky says he's ready to meet Putin “personally” in Istanbul on Thursday, responding to Donald Trump's call for immediate Ukraine-Russia talks.
“There is no point in prolonging the killings,” Zelensky posted on X. “I will be waiting for Putin in Türkiye.”
The post followed Trump’s message urging Ukraine to accept Putin’s offer of direct talks. Western leaders had earlier called for a 30-day ceasefire, starting Monday.
Putin said he’s open to “serious negotiations” but didn’t confirm support for a truce. Zelensky insists talks can only begin after a full ceasefire.
Leaders from the UK, France, Germany, and Poland warned Russia of new sanctions if it rejects the ceasefire.

⚡ Alcatraz inmate speaks out on Trump’s plan to reopen infamous prison
Charlie Hopkins, now 93, is believed to be the last surviving inmate of Alcatraz. He spent three years there in the 1950s after a kidnapping and robbery conviction and recalls its silence and isolation as “deathly.”
Hopkins reacted skeptically to President Trump’s recent call to reopen the notorious island prison, calling it symbolic. “He don’t really want to open that place,” Hopkins said. “He’s just making a point about being tough on crime.”
Trump’s idea, experts say, would cost billions and face logistical challenges. Alcatraz now functions as a museum generating $60 million a year.

⚡️Europe backs Trump's 30-day Ukraine truce push
European leaders joined Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv to call for an unconditional 30-day ceasefire with Russia — starting Monday. France, Germany, Poland and the UK backed the move after a joint call with President Trump, who originally proposed the idea.
UK PM Starmer said the ceasefire would be key to rebuilding Ukraine and reuniting families. Macron warned of “massive sanctions” if Russia refuses.
Russia says it won’t consider a truce unless the West halts military aid. Zelensky: “Any preconditions mean prolonging the war.”

⚡️ Putin hosts drone-studded Victory Day as ceasefire crumbles
Amid drone flybys and Xi Jinping’s visit, Putin used Victory Day to blend WWII memory with the ongoing war in Ukraine. He again labeled Kyiv’s leadership as Nazis and declared Russia a “barrier to Russophobia.”
While Moscow pushed its ceasefire narrative, Ukraine reported over 190 frontline clashes and multiple civilian deaths. Zelensky offered peace talks and a real 30-day truce — if Russia is serious.
Donald Trump voiced support for Zelensky’s plan and warned of new sanctions if hostilities continue.

⚡️ Mattel and Ford warn of steep tariff costs under Trump’s trade push
Major US firms Mattel and Ford have sounded alarms over rising costs due to Donald Trump’s aggressive tariff policies. Toy maker Mattel will hike prices on some products and cut Chinese imports from 20% to below 15%, citing uncertainty ahead of the holiday season. Ford expects to absorb $1.5–2.5 billion in added costs this year alone, largely from tariffs on Chinese and Mexican imports.
Since retaking office, Trump has reimposed and expanded tariffs on goods from China (up to 245%) and hit Southeast Asia (Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia) in April — though those were temporarily paused. China responded with a 125% levy on US products.
Trump, however, played it down: “Kids might have 2 dolls instead of 30. China loses more.” Meanwhile, companies like Intel, Adidas, and Procter & Gamble are warning of price hikes, reduced forecasts, and a rising risk of recession.

Born in rural Nigeria and given up to an orphanage, Lucy was unlawfully brought to the UK in 2023. The High Court found signs of emotional trauma and neglect. Despite the couple's emotional pleas, the court ruled Lucy must be placed for adoption to ensure her future security.
