Even with that, Bayern Munich turned in a warrior’s effort against Los Blancos and came very close to putting Real Madrid in a hole heading back to Spain for the return leg. As of now, this is anyone’s tie, so let’s get down to it — here are some quick hitters on the match: As always, let’s start with a look at Thomas Tuchel’s starting XI: ⭐ - - - - - - - ⭐

So gehen wir's an gegen @realmadrid! #packmas #FCBRMA #UCL pic.twitter.com/uZ0BzOojoW— FC Bayern München (@FCBayern) April 30, 2024The surprise inclusion to the XI was Thomas Müller, who not many folks expected to start. Raphaël Guerreiro, Aleksandar Pavlović, Alphonso Davies, and Serge Gnabry all started on the bench with Leroy Sané and Konrad Laimer deemed healthy enough to start. Noussair Mazraoui over Davies was not wholly unexpected, but a bad look for the Canadian, who has been closely linked to a transfer to Real Madrid. Finally, Kim Min-jae (yikes!) got the start over Matthijs de Ligt, who did not even dress for the match due to an injury. As expected, the teams took some time to feel each other out, but Bayern Munich was the early aggressor of the two sides. Harry Kane had a decent look in the 6th minute, but just could not get a good enough piece of it to be a serious threat to Andriy Lunin.Minutes later, Sané airmailed a good attempt, while Kane sent a long-range (thing not far inside midfield) over the crossbar as well. It was clear, Bayern Munich had the energy and the power of the crowd on its side. Real Madrid was like a boxer just trying to withstand a flurry of punches in the early stages of a fight. The big question was really just if the Bavarians were going to be able to maintain the high level of urgency and intensity that is normally required to fend off Los Blancos. As far as the start goes, it was the most Bayern-like opening to a match that we have seen all season. If the Bayern Munich attackers could hit the broad side of a barn in the first 16 minutes or so, it really could have been 3-0.Interestingly, Müller appeared to be functioning as a striker, with Kane as the No. 10. Kane had resumed his role sitting deeper in the buildup. It was not always like that during the match, but it was an interesting look. Then it happened…Kim Min-jae got caught woefully out of position and Toni Kroos (you knew it would be him), slid a perfect ball into Vinicius Jr., who had ample time and space to beat a helpless Manuel Neuer.Unfortunately for Min-jae, that was not the only blunder he would make. You could feel some of the collective energy zap out of the crowd and the team, but both would rebound.Tuchel made a couple of changes, including taking Goretzka out after halftime. It is unclear why Goretzka was removed, as he was having a solid showing, but it could…

Sepp Maier’s 80th Birthday Special Exhibition Opening Photo by Alexander Hassenstein/Getty Images Bayern Munich vs. Real Madrid is going to be wild. Bayern Munich president Herbert Hainer is among the people, who are genuinely thrilled to see the Bavarians set to engage in a Champions League showdown with Real Madrid later today. “I would describe the game as a Clásico at the European level. There was no encounter that happened more often in the history of the Champions than this one. I think it’s already 26 times if you include the European Cup. We’ve won 12 times, Real 11 times. So it’s always exciting. Real have won all of the last three games. So we have to make sure we change things today,” Hainer told Bild (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).Bayern Munich and Real Madrid represent the “old guard” of sorts for world football. There are not oligarchs or oil-funded countries running either club, but they both continue to produce top-level squads. “That shows how well both clubs have worked in recent years, so that on the one hand they are incredibly successful in terms of sports, but on the other hand they are also very stable financially. Everything we have built like Real – such as the stadium or the campus – we have generated through our own efforts. For that, both clubs enjoy the highest recognition throughout the football world,” Hainer remarked. “Our team played excellently in their last games – both against Arsenal and in the league. Despite the injuries we keep having, the team has developed well in the last few weeks, which gives me confidence for the games against Real.”Looking for more thoughts and analysis on Bayern Munich’s massive Champions League showdown with Real Madrid? FC Bayern München v Eintracht Frankfurt - Bundesliga Photo by Alexander Hassenstein/Getty Images Will La Bestia Negra show its fangs? In the seventy years that the UEFA Champions League (previously known as the European Cup) has existed, no two teams have met each other more often than Bayern Munich and Real Madrid. In terms of titles and games played, Madrid are clear top dogs — but if there was ever a team that consistently challenged them on the international stage, it was Bayern. That’s the reason why a German team has an iconic Spanish nickname — La Bestia Negra — the Black Beast. For a long time, Bayern Munich had the edge over Madrid in European competitions, much to the chagrin of Los Blancos. Recent results, however, have fallen short of the mythos, with Bayern Munich being knocked out by Madrid in their last three meetings. Now, a very different Bayern team takes on this edition of Real Madrid. Coach Thomas Tuchel, armed with such names as Harry Kane, Jamal Musiala, Leroy Sané, and more — has one job. It’s a chance for the team to erase the disappointment of a terribly mediocre season. All they have to do is win. It’s Bayern time. Bayern Muenchen v Bayer 04 Leverkusen - Bundesliga Photo by Johannes Simon/Bundesliga/Bundesliga Collection via Getty Images Joshua Kimmich and Carlo Ancelotti have a history... Bayern Munich star Joshua Kimmich worked under Carlo AncelottiClearly, Kimmich is not shocked by the success Ancelotti has had since his return to Real Madrid. “No, of course not. He was also really successful before his time at Bayern. Unfortunately with us, we were not that successful. But I know him as a coach. I know the team that they have a lot of individual quality, a lot of mentality. And I think he is the perfect coach for this team,” Kimmich said during an interview with Diario AS (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). During Ancelotti’s tenure at Bayern Munich, Kimmich had actually considered a transfer, but it has nothing to do with the coach. “It was nothing personal. We had a really strong squad, especially in my position. There were Arturo Vidal, Xabi Alonso, Thiago, Javi Martínez...there were a lot of exceptional players. it was not easy for me to play, especially in the first season,” Kimmich said. “When you’re young, like I was, you always want to play and compete. And, fortunately, in the second season I played and, of course, I didn’t want to move in the end. But in the first season, when you don’t play a lot, you think about what is the best for your development and your career.”Of course, before Ancelotti took over at Bayern Munich, Kimmich cut his teeth under Pep Guardiola. Now the head coach of Manchester City (eliminated by Real Madrid in the Champions League quarterfinals), Kimmich said he does not keep in close contact with his former coach, despite transfer rumors linking him to a move to England this summer. “We don’t have regular contact to each other, just when we meet for friendly games or last season in the Champions League. Of course we talked about football, families and all the normal stuff then. He was key for my career because I was a second division player in Leipzig and he was the coach who said: ‘Ok. I want to have him, I trust him, I think he can play Bundesliga and Champions League.’ He trusted me,” Kimmich said. “And this was the key for me to also become a player for the national team. So I’m really proud that I had him as a coach. I’m proud that he trusted me during this time and that I could prove that I could perform. It was a kickstart for my career. He maybe was the most important coach for my career and for sure one of the best coaches in the world.”Looking for more thoughts and analysis on Bayern Munich’s massive Champions League showdown with Real Madrid? FC Bayern München v Real Madrid: Semi-final First Leg - UEFA Champions League 2023/24 Bayern Munich manager, Thomas Tuchel, gobsmacked during UEFA Champions League semi-final first leg against Real Madrid. | Photo by Alexander Hassenstein/Getty Images A strong performance from Bayern Munich, ultimately hindered by individual mistakes. Bayern Munich versus Real Madrid, arguably football’s biggest clash, lived up to its reputation. A four-goal thriller saw Bayern trailing, winning and ultimately drawing against 14-time Champions League winners, Real Madrid. In a game that had all the twists and turns to satisfy the neutral supporters’ appetites, Prime Video DE (as captured by @iMiaSanMia) cites Thomas Tuchel as feeling quite the opposite. “We started very well and could have taken the lead in the first minute. Then we stopped sticking to our plan. I don’t even know why. We conceded the goal and things got difficult,” said Tuchel. The Bayern coach was satisfied with his sides second half performance, however, lamented missed chances that cost Bayern a third goal. “We made it 2-1 and still had a lot of chances - we had to score the third goal. It feels strange. They turned two chances into two goals,” Tuchel remarked.Tuchel went on to stress the importance of winning in Madrid, thereafter mirroring what he said before the first leg encounter, thus labelling the game a “50-50” as things stand (via @iMiaSanMia).“The situation is now clear. A win in Madrid and on to Wembley. It’s still a 50-50 game for me. Let’s see what happens,” Tuchel stated. Ultimately, Tuchel is right about the situation. A win at the Santiago Bernabéu in Madrid and nothing less is going to be enough to take Bayern to Wembley. Real Madrid Training Session And Press Conference - UEFA Champions League 2023/24 Photo by Alexander Hassenstein/Getty Images Bayern Munich and Real Madrid are about to square off. Former Real Madrid president Ramón Calderón can look on at the tie between his former club and Bayern Munich and soak in the excitement. “Bayern are one of the big teams in Europe and their opponents still respect them. Real Madrid are aware that Bayern are always a difficult team to beat and that they need to play two good games if they want to reach the final. They (Bayern) don’t seem to be at their best. At least that’s what we think, since they haven’t won the Bundesliga like they usually do. But one thing is also clear: no fan thinks it will be an easy game for Real,” Ramón Calderón told Tz’s Philipp Kessler (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “Real are playing very well. They are a very balanced team, combining experienced players like (Toni) Kroos or Modric with young players like Vinicius, Rodrygo or (Jude) Bellingham in all areas of the team. They also have a great coach in Carlo Ancelotti. They are going to win La Liga and are already in the semi-finals of the Champions League, which means that the morale of the players is very high. They are very confident that they can win their 15th CL trophy.”Calderón also noted that he had good a relationship with former Bayern Munich greats Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and Franz Beckenbauer. “I didn’t know (Uli) Hoeneß very well. I had more of a relationship with Rummenigge, whom I admired as a player and of whom I have a very high opinion as an official. I had the best relationship with Franz Beckenbauer. We often met at FIFA meetings and I met him several times in the ski resort of Kitzbühel, where he had a very nice house,” Calderón remarked. “We spent many hours having very interesting conversations about life, football, the history of our teams and the clashes between them. He was not only one of the greatest footballers in history, but also a very intelligent and entertaining conversation partner. I was very sad when I heard of his passing.”Looking for more thoughts and analysis on Bayern Munich’s massive Champions League showdown with Real Madrid? FC Bayern München v Eintracht Frankfurt - Bundesliga Photo by Alexander Hassenstein/Getty Images Bayern Munich will have its hands full with Real Madrid. Bayern Munich star Joshua Kimmich has grown up as a player right before the eyes of fans. Back in in the 2017/18 season, Kimmich was just a spry, young lad looking to cement himself as a first team player at Bayern Munich. During that campaign, the Bavarians also found themselves in a Champions League duel against Real Madrid and Kimmich remembers it well. “Both teams are completely different now. The games will be different. Real Madrid will probably go into the game as favorites because the season was a bit turbulent for us. Nevertheless, I definitely see chances for us,” Kimmich told Tz’s Philipp Kessler and Mano Bonke (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). As for the game plan against Los Blancos, Kimmich would not reveal much, but did indicate that it could look familiar to those who have followed Bayern Munich this summer. “We’ve recently been relying on transition a lot, both with the national team and the club. Especially under Thomas Tuchel, we had good games where we defended a bit deeper and launched quick attacks. We’re moving more purposefully and are trying to finish the attacks quickly,” said Kimmich. FC Union Berlin v FC Bayern München - Bundesliga Photo by Ulrik Pedersen/DeFodi Images via Getty Images The Spaniard is hardly getting a look under Thomas Tuchel... Bryan Zaragoza’s tenure at Bayern Munich thus far has not exactly lived up to what his expectations might have been. The club advanced his transfer from Granada in La Liga to the January transfer window after it had initially been agreed by both clubs that he would joining the Rekordmeister during this summer’s transfer window. When all is said and done, Bayern will have paid roughly €13 million to make that happen after an injury to Kingsley Coman prompted the club to get him on a half season loan before his Bayern contract technically begins on July 1st.So far, Bryan has only made a total of four appearances across all competitions, all of which have come in the Bundesliga as a substitute. His longest shift came in Bayern’s 3-2 loss to VfL Bochum back in February, during which he was given a 20-minute cameo by Thomas Tuchel.Per information from Bild, the Spaniard winger is growing restless of his lack of opportunities under Tuchel, especially now that Bayer Leverkusen has already wrapped up the Bundesliga title. By now, Bayern has already secured Champions League qualification for next season after their 2-1 win over Eintracht Frankfurt, but even before doing so, it would have taken a complete meltdown to have missed out on qualification for Europe’s most prestigious club competition for next season. Bryan is worried that his involvement for the Spanish national team at this summer’s Euros is in serious jeopardy. He was particularly displeased with the fact that youngster Lovro Zvonarek was given an appearance by Tuchel in the win over Eintracht Frankfurt instead of him. He had been called to warmup, but was then told to sit back down. This was Lovro Zvonarek’s second consecutive league match with an appearance, having also come on in the 5-1 win over Union Berlin. FC Bayern München v Borussia Mönchengladbach - Bundesliga Photo by Marcel Engelbrecht - firo sportphoto/Getty Images Tensions could be mounting behind the scenes between Bryan and Tuchel, but the remaining Bundesliga matches against VfB Stuttgart, VfL Wolfsburg and TSG Hoffenheim remain to be the last realistic opportunities he will have form minutes. Tuchel has not used in once in the Champions League and likely won’t in either semifinals leg against Real Madrid or the final at Wembley if Bayern get there. Hopefully for Bryan’s sake he is still able to make the Spain squad for this summer and subsequently have a more integral role at Bayern under Tuchel’s replacement. He needs to playing more regularly, especially for a player that was so integral in getting Granada back into La Liga two seasons ago. Looking for thoughts and analysis on Bayern Munich’s coaching search, the reality of hiring Ralf Rangnick, the club’s transfer possibilities, and some reasons to be excited ahead of the Champions League showdown vs. Real Madrid?
