FC Bayern München v CA Boca Juniors: Group C - FIFA Club World Cup 2025 Photo by Pedro Monteverde/Eurasia Sport Images/Getty Images Hmmm... Bayern Munich was dominant for a half and shaky for another during a nervy 2-1 victory over a rugged Boca Juniors squad before a packed house in the hot and humid temperatures at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida. While the Bavarians were, indeed, very strong in the first half, the second left a lot to be desired. That said, the clutch goal from Michael Olise saved the day (and maybe took some heat off of Vincent Kompany in the process). How would you rate the victory? I’ve got it at 5.50/10.00 because of the second half meltdown, the persistent issues with gaps in the defense, the inefficiency in the final third, and the questionable usage of Jamal Musiala, who came on as a sub...then had to leave injured after less than a half hour of action. FC Bayern München v Auckland City FC: Group C - FIFA Club World Cup 2025 Photo by Stuart Franklin - FIFA/FIFA via Getty Images Time for some action? According to Sport1 journalist Stefan Kumberger (via @iMiaSanMia), Bayern Munich board member for sport Max Eberl has headed back to Germany to get some work done for the summer transfer window: Max Eberl flew back to Europe where he will continue to work on possible transfers there and meet his respective negotiating partners in person. There’s no fixed date for his return to the US – even if Bayern reach the round of 16 or quarter-finals. Over the past few days, Eberl had conducted various talks from the team hotel in Orlando. Phone calls, video calls, emails, and more—which wasn’t an easy task given the six-hour time difference to Europe. Now priorities are shifting, as some discussions have progressed to the point where in-person meetings are necessary. In this respect, the next transfer could soon be on the cards.Sky Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg confirmed the Sport1 report and added more context. Per Plettenberg, Eberl had a specific task in his return trip to Germany — a meeting with the supervisory board regarding another potential proposal to Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams: Max Eberl flew back to Munich to meet with Uli Hoeneß, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and other board members. It was decided that the club wouldn’t give up hope on Nico Williams yet. There’s even a consideration to make a new, improved offer to Williams to show him that Bayern want him and that they’re there in case the move to Barcelona fell through. As things stand, Williams is only waiting for Barcelona and is not speaking to other clubs. At the same time, Bayern continue to be in contact with the management of (Bradley) Barcola and (Rafael) Leão.However, Bayern Munich sporting director Christoph Freund told DAZN (via @iMiaSanMia) that eber’s return to germany was not motivated by any one issue or deal. “There was no particular reason. But we sat down and decided to split up. There are some talks to be had, he’ll be in European time. We think this is a good fit right now,” said Freund. Hmmm...Anyway, FC Barcelona will reportedly have some trouble making things work financially and could also have player registration issues. Maybe it is not a certainty that Barca can get the deal done, but it is also fair to question whether or not Bayern Munich is using its time efficiently on what appears to be a longshot. The same could be said about a move for PSG’s Barcola, who really could be just using Bayern Munich to get a raise from the Champions League winners. Hopefully, it will all end up being a gamble worth taking.Looking for some thoughts and analysis on the scrutiny and pressure that Max Eberl might be under this season at Bayern Munich? FC Bayern München v CA Boca Juniors: Group C - FIFA Club World Cup 2025 Photo by Hector Vivas - FIFA/FIFA via Getty Images Bayern Munich and Boca Juniors combined to produce a memorable night in a fully packed ground in Miami. Bayern Munich came away with a strong performance against Boca Juniors, the famous and historic Argentine club, 2-1, in the FIFA Club World Cup. This meant Bayern qualified for the Round of 16; this also meant Bayern became the first club to successfully defeat a South American club in the competition. The only downside was an injury to Jamal Musiala. Vincent Kompany set his team up to play with fluency, and for the most part, Bayern did so. In this podcast:We look at the lineup put out by Vincent Kompany and what it actually looked like during the game.We share some thoughts about Jamal Musiala’s injury as well as Vincent Kompany and Thomas Tuchel’s overuse of the player. We give some praise for Josip Stanišić.We give a lot of praise for Michael Olise and Harry Kane.We look at the events leading up to the goal which Bayern conceded from Miguel Merentiel of Boca Juniors.Be sure to stay tuned to Bavarian Podcast Works for all of your up to date coverage on Bayern Munich and Germany. FC Bayern München v CA Boca Juniors: Group C - FIFA Club World Cup 2025 Photo by Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images Are we sure that match wasn’t played in Argentina? After a casual 10-0 victory over Auckland City to open its Club World Cup campaign, Bayern Munich played what felt like its first real match of the tournament against Argentine heavyweights Boca Juniors. Despite playing stronger opposition, Bayern still looked the better side, managing to capture a 2-1 victory.Jersey Swap: The Boca Juniors FansIf you’re a match awards purist, you can pretend this award went to Miguel Merentiel, as the way he managed to break through the Bayern backline and beat Manuel Neuer one-on-one was seriously impressive. Kevin Zenon and Agustin Marchesín also deserve credit for their attacking work rate and goalkeeping performances, respectively. However, the Boca fans absolutely stole the show. The atmosphere in Miami was electric, and it’s 100% thanks to the Argentinian fans who made the match look like a home game. If it wasn’t impressive at kickoff alone, the scenes when Merentiel scored the equalizer were out of this world.Der Kaiser: Josip StanišićJosip Stanišić, for the most part, played an excellent game against Boca Juniors. The Croatian combined well with Konrad Laimer and Michael Olise on multiple occasions, showing an impetus to move the ball forward rather than just recycling possession. For the entirety of the first half and most of the second, Stanišić was defended well, was strong in the tackle, and efficient in playing his way out of trouble. The only blip in Stanišić’s game came in the second half, when the player overran Merentiel while attempting to make up for Jonathan Tah’s lack of pace, which led to the Uruguayan marksman netting Boca’s only goal on the night. Following the introduction of Dayot Upamecano, Stanišić showed the value of his versatility, putting in a solid showing at left-back.Fußballgott: Joshua KimmichOf Bayern’s midfielders, Kimmich easily stood out the most, pulling the strings from the center of the pitch. While his role does lend to him seeing a lot of the ball, it's worth giving him congratulations for how well he takes those opportunities to link up with teammates at the base of midfield, or play a gorgeous cross-field ball to the waiting feet of Michael Olise or Kingsley Coman. In fact, it was a quick free kick from deep in his own half that nearly put Coman clean through on goal midway through the first half. Linking attack and defense well, Kimmich played 23 balls into the final third and made 13 of his 14 attempted long-balls on his way to completing a match-high 97 passes with a pass completion rate of 93% (FotMob).Der Bomber: Michael OliseThere are a number of Bayern attackers who deserve a mention for their performances. Kingsley Coman was far more than the Boca defense could handle (the empty net, however, had him beat), Harry Kane worked hard all night and was rewarded with a goal and an assist for his troubles, and Thomas Müller looked good in his short cameo. Despite these strong showings, Michael Olise once again stole the show. Olise went on some mazy runs, although only 30% of his dribbles were successful (FotMob). Olise had almost too many standout moments to count, with his disallowed goal from the corner flag, ball into the box for the squandered Coman chance, and an excellent 34th-minute ball through to Kane summarizing only his first-half exploits. In the second period, Olise was a little quieter, but his game-winning strike from the edge of the box was enough to make permanent his mark on the game.Meister of the Match: Konrad LaimerLaimer has worked hard all season to make the right-back position his own, and this match is a perfect example of why he’s the right man for the job. He recovered from Goretzka losing the ball in a dangerous area in the first minute, did well to shield the ball out for a Bayern throw-in in the 17th minute, and ran onto the end of a Thomas Müller pass in the 87th minute to score a goal that was ruled offside…

FC Bayern Munchen v CA Boca Juniors: Group C - FIFA Club World Cup 2025 Photo by Robbie Jay Barratt - AMA/Getty Images That play...was a circus Bayern Munich was dominating Boca Juniors until a complete defensive breakdown temporarily gave the South American side a boost after Miguel Merentiel’s goal in the 66th minute. The Bavarians would strike back to take the lead and ultimately win the game behind a goal from Michael Olise. Still, the meltdown left a bad taste in the mouth of center-back Jonathan Tah, who played a big role in the tally from Merentiel.“I take responsibility for the fact that we didn’t organize the rest defense well enough beforehand and that’s how we got into this open situation. I have to organize it better — then it wouldn’t happen,” Tah told Sky Germany’s Kerry Hau (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). The play started with a turnover in the attacking end, followed by poor positioning and no ability to track back from Raphaël Guerreiro, who was just too far upfield. To complicate matters, Tah took a bad angle and got smoked in a sprint before Josip Stanišić overpursued Merentiel, and allowed the attacker to go in alone on Manuel Neuer. All the play needed was some Benny Hill “Yakety Sax” music, but at least the Bavarians fought back and got the win. Otherwise, the heat could have been worse than what the players were dealing with on the pitch in Miami. FC Bayern München v CA Boca Juniors: Group C - FIFA Club World Cup 2025 Photo by Heuler Andrey/Eurasia Sport Images/Getty Images Bayern Munich’s win was marred by what could be another injury for Jamal Musiala... Die Folgen: Bayern’s 2-1 win over Boca Juniors (Bavarian Football Works)On a hot and humid 2025 version of #MiamiNights, Bayern Munich took on a feisty Boca Juniors side in what really felt like a home game for the Argentinian powerhouse. The Bavarians would not be intimidated or fall victim to the physicality of their opponents and walked away with a hard-fought 2-1 victory in the Club World Cup. Here are some quick hitters on the match: As always, let’s begin with a look at the starting XI: Our XI for #FCBBOCA ⚪️#FIFACWC #TakeItToTheWorld pic.twitter.com/XJZGOZhpmn— FC Bayern US (@FCBayernUS) June 20, 2025Kompany taking a conservative approach with Jamal Musiala and Dayot Upamecano (likely induced by the sometimes overly aggressive opponent here) was a bit surprising, but the intent was clear — add some aggression (Konrad Laimer, Leon Goretzka) to offset Boca Juniors and rely on Bayern Munich’s overall quality to smack down the opposition. The results were mixed for a variety of reasons. The pro-Boca Juniors crowd was extremely loud and boisterous, which enhanced the atmosphere ten-fold. In the 8th minute, a bizarre corner attempt led to what looked like goal from Michael Olise, but it was ruled that Serge Gnabry made too much contact with Argentinian goalkeeper Agustín Marchesín. Tempers would flare after that a bit — which was to no one’s surprise. The disallowed goal was a fair call. Gnabry simply prevented Marchesín from making a play on the ball. The gulf in quality was very evident early on. Bayern Munich was just simply better everywhere on the pitch and had Boca Juniors looking very uncomfortable. In the 18th minute, Bayern Munich would breakthrough when Harry Kane took advantage of a poor clearance attempt from Boca Juniors and perfectly placed a shot to the far corner for the tally. Honestly, it is goals like this where Kane is truly at his best — creating panic among defenders in the box and preying on mistakes. Minutes later, Gnabry and Coman almost connected for another goal, but, well, it was Coman and Gnabry after all. I kid, I kid...You could tell that the heat and humidity were having an impact on both teams. I think I broke a sweat just watching it. Bayern Munich was thoroughly dominant in the first half. Boca Juniors had no answers and could not offer any challenge to the Bavarians. It was clear that the Argentinians were flummoxed. Olise had a really good chance in the 53rd minute, but might have rushed it a bit as it was saved easily. In the 69th minute, the unthinkable happened: a turnover resulted in a — you guessed it — quick counterattack, which left the left-side of the defense completely exposed because of poor positioning. Miguel Merentiel raced past Jonathan Tah, took a touch around a prone Josip Stanišić, who overcommitted to this recovery run, and made short work of Manuel Neuer.Stanišić is a good right-back and “just a guy” at center-back. Aside of Bayern Munich’s left-side-of-the-defense-meltdown, it was a marvelous individual effort from Merentiel. As for Tah, he looked tired and had zero burst to try and make play on Merentiel. The conditions being what they were, it is tough to know whether or not his lack of explosion was due to fatigue or just, well, a lack of explosion. Let’s just say that the jury is out. The play also showed once again the danger in Kompany’s system, where the outside-backs can push too far up and expose massive holes behind them. Guerreiro really cannot play left-back at a decent level any more, as it was his absence in the space what left the rest of the backline open to be picked apart. All of a sudden, Bayern Munich had lost complete control of the game against a team that it had completely outclassed for the previous 68 minutes. To make matters worse, Jamal Musiala left the game with an apparent injury…
Читать полностью…FC Bayern München v CA Boca Juniors: Group C - FIFA Club World Cup 2025 Photo by Megan Briggs/Getty Images This is not a final conclusion, but the early signs seem positive. Seeing Jamal Musiala on the ground, holding his hamstring and clearly signaling he was unable to keep going, was not a pleasant sight for Bayern Munich fans to see. Yet against FC Augsburg in April, that is exactly what happened. Bayern’s talismanic forward then missed multiple months, only being eased back to full fitness during the inaugural FIFA Club World Cup.And then he got hurt again, leaving Bayern fans to again fretfully watch Musiala on the ground, signaling he could not keep playing. But, according to Sky Germany reporter Kerry Hau, as captured by @iMiaSanMia, initial impressions indicate that Bayern fans will not have to wait three months this time to see the former Chelsea FC youngster play: Jamal Musiala is not expected to have suffered a bad injuryHopefully, this first impression turns out to be accurate. Losing Musiala to another muscle injury so soon after the last could be a really devastating blow to the youngster.

FC Bayern München v CA Boca Juniors: Group C - FIFA Club World Cup 2025 Infinite Aura | Photo by S. Mellar/FC Bayern via Getty Images We’ve won, but at what cost? Bayern Munich knew they were in for a rude awakening when they squared off against Argentine club Boca Juniors, and they got the full Superclasico treatment. The Rekordmeister managed to eke out a 2-1 win thanks to Harry Kane and Michael Olise, whose goals overcame a Miguel Merentiel equalizer just past the hour mark.Boca Juniors definitely lived up to the billingIt was widely established that Boca would play a rough game today, and they certainly followed through on that. Sliding tackles, pushes, rough challenges, off the ball fouls, the Argentine club had it all in their locker. The referee was unfortunately gullible enough to not call most of the fouls and produce enough yellow cards.Michael Olise is the best player in the worldIt’s not even a joke anymore. Bayern struggled throughout the match, and Michael Olise had a pretty average game which included a dispossession that led to Boca’s goal. Nevertheless, he managed to score from a corner (ruled out for a foul on the goalkeeper) and managed to pull a goal out of the bag and put the Bavarians ahead late into the game.Raphaël Guerreiro needs to goWhen the lineups were announced, there was concern surrounding the player selections. Raphaël Guerreiro was the worst player on the pitch tonight, with Leon Goretzka being the second worst. The Portuguese left-back was consistently exposed and was out of position in the build up to Boca’s goal. Just terrible from him and Goretzka who did nothing of note apart from get booked for dissent after being shoved down easily before a free kick.Vincent Kompany showing his faultsCircling back to the point about the lineups, Vincent Kompany has made some questionable calls in this match. Putting Jamal Musiala on in such a physical game just after he came back from injury is never a good idea. The 22-year-old ended up playing 25 minutes before being replaced by Thomas Müller. As much as people want to give the Belgian coach more time, such decisions should not be made.Finish your chances ladsBayern could have easily had up to five or six goals in this match, but poor finishing meant that they could only have two. Even in the 2025/26 season, a decent team will punish them for missing goal-scoring opportunities.

FC Bayern München v CA Boca Juniors: Group C - FIFA Club World Cup 2025 Photo by Megan Briggs/Getty Images Nothing is official, but the early exit was curious... With Bayern Munich tied with Boca Juniors 1-1 in the 80th minute, a situation arose that no one wants to see — potentially another injury for Jamal Musiala. After entering the game as a substitute in the 57th minute, Musiala was caught up in what was a very physical game. While it is unclear what might be hurt (if there is even an injury, to be clear, nothing has been officially reported) or even how it happened, the Bayern Munich players knew something was off with their burgeoning star and surrounded him before he left the pitch. Jamal Musiala is injured, replaced by Thomas Müller pic.twitter.com/KduQOBfFF6— Bayern & Germany (@iMiaSanMia) June 21, 2025Thankfully, seconds after Musiala exited, Michael Olise gave the Bavarians a 2-1 lead in what was a very tense situation. To be clear again no one knows exactly what happened yet. It could be as simple as a cramp, but Musiala face and tender walk off the field definitely have left fans concerned.
