Die Folgen: Germany’s 2-0 loss to France (Bavarian Football Works)Germany and France hit the pitch to battle it out in a game that neither really wanted to be in — the third place match of the UEFA Nations League. For Germany, to make this stage was an achievement of sorts (considering how low it had been in recent years), but for France, it was more of a necessary evil. That said, Germany did not exactly light the world on fire with its performances and was outplayed by France during a 2-0 defeat for the Germans. There is much to discuss, so let’s get to it. The Tinker Man is back, baby! Anyway, Nagelsmann started Niclas Füllkrug and Nick Woltemade as a tandem uptop with Leon Goretzka and Pascal Groß as central midfielders, who were tasked with trying to clog up the middle and to provide more support in front of the backline. Florian Wirtz and Karim Adeyemi started as the outside midfielders, while Jonathan Tah, Robin Koch, David Raum, and Joshua Kimmich formed the defense in front of Marc-André ter Stegen.The thought process was sound for the formation and the personnel, but France is...crazy. They just play at a furious pace.France transitions so damn quickly and fearlessly. It must be so uneasy to play against them as a defender. Woltemade has a ton of potential, but it was evident — again — that he was not on the same page as his teammates and not efficient enough in front of the goal.In the 21st minute Rayan Cherki ripped a shot that went through the legs of Raum and tested Ter Stegen mightily. The ensuing corner also saw a header for Ter Stegen to come up big. If there is anything to take out of these past two games, it is that Ter Stegen looks “back.”In the 24th minute — under extreme duress — Woltemade and Adeyemi hooked up for a great chance that was turned aside by Mike Maignan.At the time, it felt like Germany was reluctant to take many chances going forward because the possession allowed them to stay off their heels for a bit. Adrien Rabiot’s career arc from petulant youngster to key player for France is kind of wild. He always had talent, but attitude, work ethic, bad career advice, etc. always seemed to plague him. The two biggest “stars” in this game — Florian Wirtz and Kylian Mbappé — did not do much to assert themselves early on.Adeyemi was a big problem for France times and almost drew a PK (VAR would rule against it and earn Adeyemi a yellow card for diving) when Maignan closed down on him after contact from Lucas Hernandez. Adeyemi was finding the space behind France’s backline, which was not always ample. The issue for Adeyemi was when he got his foot on the ball (which often resulted in too big of a touch). That is probably why he is normally a sub. The first half, while fast-paced and sometimes fun, had to be nerve wracking for both teams. France, though, would break through when a diagonal cross from Aurélien Tchouaméni evaded a leaping Joshua Kimmich, landed on the foot of Mbappé, who took a touch inside from the left-side, ripped a shot that got around Kimmich, and was hit with a glancing blow from Ter Stegen before finding its way into the net. Just minutes earlier, Mbappé flubbed a good chance, so you could say he made up for it.That is how the frenetic first half would end. France juist has a way of wearing down its opponents. Germany striker Niclas Füllkrug did not focus on the negatives or what might have been after his squad’s loss to France. Instead, the West Ham United striker thought it was a pretty solid performance. “I think we had good energy in the game. We played against a team that brings extreme quality to the pitch. It’s incredibly unfortunate that we didn’t take the lead – that would have certainly changed the direction of the game,” Füllkrug remarked afterwards in comments captured by DFB.de. “Nevertheless, it was a decent performance overall. Germany’s 2-0 loss to France sees them close off the international break with two losses as they fail to finish on the podium in the latest iteration of the Nations League. Head coach Julian Nagelsmann talked about the team’s improvement following the semi-final loss to Portugal and what is in store for the national team in the upcoming games.”I saw much more of our team today than on Wednesday,” Nagelsmann said after the match in comments captured by @iMiaSanMia. “In the end, you have to win against a top team when you create so many chances. We played very attractively and created many chances. “But part of football is also taking advantage of those chances. Both results are bitter, but today’s game was much better than on Wednesday. If we perform like we did today in the [World Cup] qualifiers, then we have to qualify. But we can’t slow down a step; we have to be aggressive and take advantage of every game.”The team created plenty of chances, but Nagelsmann will need to work with the squad to ensure the chances turn into goals. After a humbling loss at the Allianz Arena that saw the German national team out of the Nations League, they faced the French National Team for the Third Place. In what was slated to be a difficult game, Germany still dominated in ways, but found themselves on the losing end in Stuttgart. Here are the match awards from the game, Jersey Swap: The referee Ryan CherkiWhile Michael Olise is a strong contender for the Jersey Swap, we should pay attention to Cherki’s phenomenal performance. The French #25 was a solid threat and constantly found ways to bypass the German midfield and feed his teammates Kylian Mbappe and Marcus Thuram. Der Kaiser: Robin KochIn what was a disappointing evening, Koch put up a decent game. It might not have been enough and he was often overrun but playing against a mostly in-form FranceDer Fußballgott: Joshua KimmichKimmich was perhaps the only remotely competent player in the defensive side. While Germany was arguably the better team in terms of chances, they were clearly overrun by France on multiple occasions. He continues to prove his merit for the team and clearly deserves the captaincy too but perhaps, all that would hold some value in a better team. Der Bomber: Deniz UndavFlorian Wirtz had a much better game than the mid-week fixture but Deniz Undav steals the spotlight. The youngster from the moment of his substitution was constantly looking for chances and continues at a high level. Adding to his already established skills as seen last year, Undav’s future with the national team is assured and he will certainly start over Nick Woltemade whose woes continue. Meister of the Match: Karim AdeyemiWhile the end-product was taken away from him, Adeyemi had the best attacking chances and was the most threatening player in the attack. Wirtz came a close second but tonight it is the Dortmund star who takes the MOTM. The poor refereeing aside, he could have truly been something if it weren’t for the complete and utter lack of clinicality this German side has shown so far.

There still has not been a final decision reached on Leroy Sané’s future either at Bayern Munich, or elsewhere. The winger has not accepted any of the offers put forth by the club to extend his contract and he also has not accepted any offers that have come from other clubs thus far.Per information from kicker’s Frank Linkesch (via @iMiaSanMia), Sané is still set to travel with the rest of the Bayern squad to the United States for the FIFA Club World Cup. Bayern’s tournament opens with a group stage match against Auckland City in Cincinnati, Ohio at the TQL Stadium. As things currently stand, though, Sané’s contract with Bayern is still set to expire on the 30th of this month, which comes before potential knockout stage matches for the German Rekordmeister should they progress out of their group. If he does not accept an offer from another club either before then or before the official summer transfer window opens, it is not entirely ruled out that he will finally agree to an extension with Bayern. After all, he did just recently hire agent Pini Zahavi, which could be seen as a posturing tactic, let alone trying to broker a financially suitable deal with another club if he does not stay at Bayern.There was previously interest from Premier League clubs in Sané, but the latest bids have come from the Turkish SüperLig. Fenerbahçe have very recently submitted an offer to the winger that was slightly better than the offer that Galatasaray had put forward that would see him early roughly 13 to 14 million euros per year. At Bayern, he currently earns roughly 15 million euros per year plus performance-based bonuses and it was well understood by the player months ago that, in order to stay at Bayern, he would likely have to take a wage cut and go on a performance-based contract, which he had seemed open to doing prior to hiring Zahavi. Now, negotiations have stalled up to this point and it seems that Bayern is essentially playing the waiting game up until the end of this month.

According to a report from kicker, Bayern Munich is set to pay €300,000 to bring Tom Bischof in early from Hoffenheim, so he can play in the Club World Cup: TSG Hoffenheim, with whom Tom Bischof is officially under contract until June 30, 2025, and FC Bayern have apparently reached an agreement regarding the technician’s immediate transfer to Säbener Straße. This will allow Bischof to be transferred in the additional transfer window created by FIFA especially for the Club World Cup and to take part in the tournament for the record champions.On Sunday afternoon, during Germany’s 2-0 defeat to France in the Nations League third-place play-off, record international Lothar Matthäus explained in his role as RTL commentator that he was aware of an agreement between FCB and TSG. Accordingly, Bischof, who came on as a substitute for Leon Goretzka after just over an hour against the Equipe Tricolore and thus made his DFB debut, could travel to the USA.In fact, according to kicker, the people involved are said to have reached an agreement, which will be confirmed later on Monday. Paramedics and stadium stewards attended an incident in the final minutes of the game at the Allianz Arena when a supporter fell from the second tier of the main stand onto the seating area below.The game continued while the spectator was being treated, but in a statement, UEFA has said that the supporter could not be revived following medical treatment. A UEFA statement said: “There was a medical emergency at the Munich arena, and despite the best efforts of the medical team, the person sadly passed away at 00:06 (CET). Our thoughts are with their loved ones at this difficult time.”This can really only be described as a horrible and unfortunate accident. No further information was available at the time of this post. Germany recorded their second loss in a row this international break after losing 2-0 to France in the Nations League third-place playoffs following their loss to Portugal in the semi-finals earlier this week. This is the first time Germany has seen such results since 2023 in a run of friendlies.But not everything is the same.“The opponents are not comparable,” Bayern Munich and Germany midfielder Joshua Kimmich said after the France game Sunday (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “Back then, we lost to Austria and Turkey — with all due respect. We wanted to show a reaction today after Wednesday. We have to take the lead early with the chances we had, it would’ve been a different game if we did.”Kimmich does have a point about the quality of opponents, but that is no excuse for the Germans’ performance, as he rightly points out. The hosts played a game worthy of defeat and were rightfully rewarded by their second consecutive loss. Fans will hope the team turns a leaf soon as the World Cup looms. Germany lost the Nations League third-place playoff against France after a performance worthy of criticism. Goals from Kylian Mbappé and Michael Olise downed the hosts 2-0, as Germany recorded their second loss in a row. Captain Joshua Kimmich was clearly unhappy following the defeat, and he made his thoughts on the game clear as day.Speaking post-game, Kimmich said (via @iMiaSanMia), “Especially if you look at the first half, we should be leading 3-0 after six minutes. Then we went into the break a goal behind. We lost patience too early and lost our structure in the second half. We were caught one counterattack after another. We made too many mistakes.” He didn’t hold back when talking about today’s opponents either, as he felt Germany had a very winnable game on their hands. “We gave them what they wanted. If you look at the first half and you’re honest: The French had no desire to win at the beginning – and then they won anyway,” said Kimmich. You can’t help but agree with Kimmich — Germany wasted far too many chances. Julian Nagelsmann and his side will be disappointed to only be taking away fourth spot in the UEFA Nations League after a mostly successful group stage. Here are four observations from a disappointing week for German football.A truly disastrous international break Ahead of Germany’s UEFA Nations League semi-final against Portugal, Julian Nagelsmann emphasised the importance of building confidence ahead of his side’s World Cup Qualifiers kicking off in September. Yet, following Germany’s losses against Portugal and France, Germany’s 37-year-old manager might be wondering if his side will even qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Compared to Europe’s elite, Germany is still way off the mark. The only consolation is that Nagelsmann still has one whole year to whip his team into shape, if they actually make it to the World Cup that is. Does Nagelsmann actually fit international management?Nagelsmann is a very innovative and tactical manager, who is able to adapt on the fly in order to overcome his opposition.These traits are all good on paper, but in order to execute it, you need a well drilled team who are on the exact same page as you, and in international football, that is much more difficult to accomplish. In club football you spend a significant amount of time coaching, tweaking and fine tuning your team. In international football, you only get a small window to work with your side before they are off to their club sides once again, thus making it extremely important for the players to know exactly what the game plan is. This is where the potential issue lies with Nagelsmann. Being the innovator and tactician that he is, he is always looking to change the system in order to gain an advantage over the opposition, which again is a fantastic trait to have. However, given the limited coaching time Nagelsmann has, the constant chopping and changing of systems makes it difficult for the players to learn and execute. A good example is Germany utilising a back three system against Portugal, then using a 4-4-2 against France. Two vastly different systems in two games.Perhaps the former Bayern Munich coach just needs more time with his squad or perhaps he should just simplify. Either way, Germany have a long road ahead if they want to challenge at the forefront of international football again. Germany couldn’t finish a two piece puzzle After the first fifteen minutes, you would have bet your house on Germany, at the very least, scoring a goal.In the first half, Florian Wirtz, Nick Woltemade and Karim Adeyemi all had fantastic chances to score but all three players managed to squander their opportunity, either shooting directly at France’s shot-stopper, Mike Maignan, or putting the ball wide of the mark.Ultimately, Germany had a lot of shots against France, it’s just a shame the only one that hit hit themselves in the foot. Germany VARy unlucky to come away goalless?As controversial and polarising as VAR has been since it’s introduction, there have been many cases in which the video technology has helped the referee rectify incorrect decisions, leaving one side relieved and another frustrated.Germany, unfortunately, were left the frustrated ones after VAR disallowed a heroic goal from second half substitute and Stuttgart local, Deniz Undav, as well as overturning a 33rd minute penalty awarded to Adeyemi.Both decisions were in fact correct, but that doesn’t make it any less frustrating for the Germans.

No matter what Bayern Munich sporting director Christoph Freund does in the future, his work during the 2024 winter transfer window will always be called into question. While the Austrian did a terrific job of getting Eric Dier on a loan that would eventually become a permanent transfer, his deals for Bryan Zaragoza and Sacha Boey will always be looked at massive risks that did not work out. While Boey might still have a chance to buck the odds and prove himself, it appears Zaragoza will not get that opportunity per AS journalist Jorge García (via @iMiaSanMia): Bayern and Bryan Zaragoza’s agent have recently held talks and it was agreed that the player would look for a future elsewhere. Zaragoza has acknowledged that he was unable to adapt to German football and that the best solution is to part ways. Bayern expressed the same sentiment, understanding that the situation calls for a separation, if possible permanently. Bryan will not return to Bayern, not even for training ahead of the Club World Cup. He’s training individually with a personal trainer while awaiting his future to be resolved. His priority is to stay in Spain, but that’s not simple. Bayern want to recoup part of the fee they paid for him, and his salary is too high for most Spanish clubs. Only teams playing in European competitions can afford a deal. There’s also interest from England and Italy.In retrospect, it appears that neither side of this deal appears to be happy with the arrangement. Zaragoza likely would not have decided to sign with the Bavarians, while Bayern Munich absolutely would have passed on the chance to ink the Spaniard.
