Borussia Dortmund v FC Bayern München - Bundesliga Photo by Stuart Franklin/Getty Images Musiala has a long future ahead Bayern Munich’s Jamal Musiala is known for his silky dribbling and passing abilities, traits he would share with, as the segue in the last part of the series suggests, Thiago. “When we got on the pitch, I remember seeing Thiago playing two-touch with somebody across the entire pitch”, Musiala recounted (via Player’s Tribune). “Half to half. No mistakes. Perfect touch. I had never seen anything like it. I was just thinking: Oh my God. If I saw it right now, today, I would still be thinking: Oh my God. It didn’t even make sense. It was a glitch. Thiago is a glitch.”During one of the training sessions, he made it his goal to not show that he was 17, that he was able to keep up with the pros. Fast-forward to end of training, everyone was walking back to their club-sponsored Audis, but Musiala couldn’t drive home: no license or car. What now?“OK, we’re done. Can you come pick me up?” FC Bayern Munich - Jamal Musiala Photo by Sven Hoppe/picture alliance via Getty Images This wasn’t a thing yet back in 2020 Mrs. Musiala rolls up to pick up her son like it’s his first day of school. The whole ride home he was just smiling like his mum. A lot of things went by in a blur since then: listening to Thomas Müller bark orders in an empty stadium, scoring his first goal (against Schalke in an 8-0 win), playing in a sold-out stadium for the first time, his first ever World Cup, winning Bayern the Bundesliga on the last day of the 2022/23 season, playing in the home Euros wearing the number 10 and Epic German Sax Guy. He’s seen it all, and he’s only 21.Basically, a single camera roll will have all the memories come flooding back. Funny enough, you could say that Musiala’s only getting started, and you’d be right. In 20 years, he’ll look back on a glittering career filled with trophies. Just you watch.

FC Bayern München v 1. FC Heidenheim 1846 - Bundesliga Photo by Sebastian Widmann/Getty Images Is Liverpool trying to sneak up on Bayern Munich? LFC to make sudden strike on Davies? (Anfield Watch)Liverpool FC could be positioning itself in the mix to land Bayern Munich left-back Alphonso Davies: Liverpool have got what they need in order to accelerate a move for Alphonso Davies. The Canadian is reportedly on the shortlist. The Athletic claims Liverpool are in fact in the mix for Alphonso Davies. The left-back is out of contract in the summer and his destination isn’t as clear as it once was.Everyone assumed that Real Madrid would sign Davies. It appears that’s nowhere near a certainty, however, and Madrid don’t hold the power over the transfer that they once did. And so Liverpool are there, seeing what can happen. The Athletic’s report makes it clear that if Davies were to move to England, Anfield would be the ‘most plausible’ destination. It feels unlikely that Liverpool would be the club that reels in Davies, but weirder things have happened. Anyway, after months of Real Madrid looking like the frontrunner to land Davies, a contract extension with Bayern Munich now looks like the most likely option. Will the Bavarians get a deal done? Will Pep be trump card for City in Wirtz pursuit? (Esteemed Kompany)Florian Wirtz appears to be on the cusp of signing a contract extension with Bayer Leverkusen, but if there is one club who might be able to blow away Die Werkself with a massive offer, it could be Manchester City.City is absolutely reeling at the moment under Pep Guardiola and could use a jolt of energy in the summer of 2025. Could Guardiola sway Wirtz to make the jump to England? Let’s see: Christian Falk has reported via his exclusive Daily Briefing column that he believes that Manchester City have every chance of signing Wirtz next summer. Falk believes that Pep Guardiola’s contract extension means that City have a big chance of landing their dream signing. Furthermore, Falk adds that Real Madrid and Bayern Munich are also keen to sign the German international. Lastly, Falk’s report gives the impression that it’s now a battle between three clubs to sign the Bayer Leverkusen star.To win a perceived transfer battle for Florian Wirtz. Manchester City would have to offer something that Bayern Munich or Real Madrid couldn’t. As per Falk’s report, it appears that those are City’s main rivals in the race for the German superstar. Bayern can offer Wirtz the opportunity to play at Germany’s biggest club. There is always an allure to that proposition for Germany’s finest talent. Real Madrid are Real Madrid. Generally, when they target one of the biggest talents, they usually get their man. But not always. Manchester City have one player who spurned Madrid’s advances to play at the Etihad. That is Erling Haaland. The hope is they can convince Wirtz to do the same. But how could they do it? As per Falk’s report playing under Pep Guardiola is an attractive proposition for any player. That is a well-established fact. There is an aura attached to playing under Guardiola. The hope is City can leverage that in any potential negotiations with Wirtz. There is also the offer of the German international leading a new era of dominance at Manchester City. Kevin De Bruyne, Ilkay Gundogan, Bernardo Silva and others are coming towards the end of their storied careers at Manchester City. So there is an opening there for a player like Wirtz to take over. He could possibly be the face of City’s new era alongside Erling Haaland, Phil Foden, Josko Gvardiol and others if he did choose to move to the Etihad next summer.Manchester City do hold their own trump cards in the perceived race for a player who would be their dream signing. If they are faced with a battle against Bayern Munich and Real Madrid for Florian Wirtz they must pull out all of the stops to secure his signature. He is that good and signing him could set up Manchester City’s next era of dominance in England and across Europe.Bavarian Podcast…

FC Bayern München v FC Augsburg - Bundesliga Photo by F. Noever/FC Bayern via Getty Images We’ll cross that bridge when we get there... Thomas Müller’s role at Bayern Munich has been drastically reduced, casting uncertainty over his future beyond his current contract. Like all players bound to their current contract, he’s focused on finishing the season first.“At the moment, my full focus is on being a player – that’s exhausting enough,” Müller said (BR24 as captured by Twitter account @iMiaSanMia). There are many options, be it in the coaching field, as a TV pundit or even outside of football - maybe even something with my stud farm. But I’ve always felt comfortable doing one thing at a time. My full focus now is on being a player. Let’s wait and see.”A club management role is also a suitable job for the Munich legend, but again won’t commit to anything. “There are a few roles in the world of football that suit me well, but one thing at a time. I can’t do all of them at the same time,” he quipped. “But at some point I will have to make a decision - but it’s not time for that yet.”

BundesligaBorussia Dortmund - 1.FC Heideheim 1846 Photo by ANP via Getty Images The Bayern Munich wonderkid is gaining serious interest from top clubs. Paul Wanner has been a revelation this season. On loan for Bayern Munich at Heidenehim, the 18-year-old burst onto the scene with an incredible start to the 2024/25 season scoring goals and providing assists in all competitions. Top clubs have started to gain interest in the young player such as Borussia Dortmund.Among Dortmund, Bayer Leverkusen, Eintracht Frankfurt, VfB Stuttgart, and and RB Leipzig are also interested. In other words, every top German club is looking to sign Wanner.Dortmund is looking to sign Wanner on a permanent transfer to load up on further young talent. Dortmund is considering a loan as an alternative but it is not their priority. No concrete talks have taken place but Wanner is aware of Dortmund’s interest and the prospect of regular match time could prove intriguing for Wanner.Borussia Dortmund are interested in Paul Wanner. BVB scouts have been closely monitoring the youngster for years, following every little step of his development. Recently, Wanner's name has been mentioned more and more frequently in the important meetings of the Dortmund… pic.twitter.com/UmWt0zmEIT— Bayern & Germany (@iMiaSanMia) December 17, 2024Certainly, Bayern have a plan for Wanner in future years but it is not certain that he would start for the club next season. It could benefit Bayern to loan out Wanner another year, but perhaps he is ready and wants to play for Bayern next season.Squad planning is certainly on all clubs’ radars at the moment but bigger pieces such as Jamal Musiala and Florian Wirtz need to be addressed at Bayern before these decisions can be made.Looking to catch up on all of the Bundesliga action from the weekend? FC Bayern Munich Training Session Photo by J. Fronzeck/FC Bayern via Getty Images Is anyone healthy at Bayern Munich? Well, Sacha Boey was not the only Bayern Munich option for right-back to suffer a setback. Konrad Laimer, a midfielder by trade who has been used at right-back to cover for the team’s injury situation, left practice after 50 minutes today after approaching head coach Vincent Kompany (per Bild via @iMiaSanMia): Konrad Laimer did not complete the entire session today. He went to Vincent Kompany after 50 minutes, signalled slight muscle problems and went into the dressing room.We can all hope that this is an Eric Dier-type situation, but Bild seems to think that is more serious than that. Tel continues workBayern Munich youngster Mathys Tel took part in today’s warm-up with the team, but then worked out individually rather than take part in the team session (per Bild Via @iMiaSanMia): Mathys Tel, who suffered an injury against Mainz, was able to warm up with the team today then worked individually for 30 minutes.More details on Kane, DaviesAccording to a report from Bild (via @iMiaSanMia), Harry Kane looks ready to go for the next game after completing the full team session. Meanwhile, Alphonso Davies went for 70 minutes of the session and looks like he could return on Friday against RB Leipzig: Harry Kane completed the entire training session today and should be able to start against Leipzig on Friday. TSG 1899 Hoffenheim v Sport-Club Freiburg - Bundesliga Photo by Alex Grimm/Getty Images Will Bayern Munich be able to acquire a top young German talent on a free transfer? Latest reports indicate that Bayern Munich are in concrete talks with Hoffenheim’s Tom Bischof. Die Roten are interested in signing the 19-year-old on a free in the summer. Sky reporter Florian Plettenberg has confirmed that the recent interest has taken the next step and talks are taking place, meaning the German midfielder could be announced in coming months. Is Bayern Munich looking to further rejuvenate their squad in 2025? Recent attempts at young talent such as Mathys Tel haven’t quite paid out expected dividends just yet, but Bayern have clearly learned the need for patience. It is reported that Bayern is looking to sign Bischof and then immediately loan the German to a top club to be brought back when ready to play. However, there are examples such as Alexander Nübel where these loaned players seemingly never return. At the moment, Bischof seems like a no-risk, no-brainer if the Bavarians can bring in the midfielder on a free transfer.Looking to catch up on all of the Bundesliga action from the weekend? FC Augsburg v Bayer 04 Leverkusen - Bundesliga Photo by Jörg Schüler/Bayer 04 Leverkusen via Getty Images All Leverkusen wants from Christmas...is Wirtz It seemed so very sure that Florian Wirtz was going to leave Bayer Leverkusen in the summer of 2025. With so many big clubs alerted to the young German star’s sky high potential, it seemed that the current season would be Wirtz’s last in a jersey with ‘Barmenia’ plastered all over it.But life likes to throw up a surprise or two. One of those happened when kicker announced Florian Wirtz had signed a new contract with Leverkusen. Florian Plettenberg, however, jumped in to offer a slightly different version of the story:The clear trend is that Florian Wirtz will extend his contract with Bayer 04 Leverkusen until 2028. However, the new contract has not yet been signed. Bayer have been in talks with him and his family for some time regarding a new deal, as previously reported. A summer move to [Bayern Munich], Real Madrid, or Manchester City is currently off the table. The next opportunity for a transfer would come after the 2026 World Cup. Bayern boss Max Eberl was determined to sign Wirtz next summer and had already initiated discussions. It seems a big shame for Bayern that what has been commonly reported to be their top target is set to renew their contract at their Bundesliga rivals, but this does not rule out a move. It simply pushes the issue back a year to 2026...Looking to catch up on all of the Bundesliga action from the weekend? FC Bayern München v SV Werder Bremen - Bundesliga Photo by Stefan Matzke - sampics/Corbis via Getty Images Role model for the next generation Although he is no longer a starting player for Bayern Munich, Thomas Müller has always put the club first, which is why he has no problem taking a backseat role to the current starting XI players. “At the moment I have the role of a back-up for one of the central players (Musiala & Kane). We can say thank God that the guys are always fit. I currently see myself in this role as far as my position is concerned”, (BR24 as captured by Twitter account @iMiaSanMia): “Every player also has a role in the dressing room, in the entourage of the team. During my entire career, I’ve always tried to do my best to make the team function as best as possible. It’s no different right now.”Vincent Kompany recently said that Jamal Musiala must look at everything that Müller does in training; the 21-year-old is after all considered the heir to Thomas’ throne. “Not in all situations,” Müller quipped. “I can also look up to him in a few things, even though implementing them would be tough. He has dribbling that’s rarely seen in football. But of course, it’s about the ‘easy’ goals, which are crucial in football. We can see that Jamal improved in that area. It’s nice for all of us.”

Poland v Germany - UEFA European Under-21 Championship 2025 Qualifier Photo by Adam Nurkiewicz/Getty Images Messi is a pretty good player to model oneself after, to be fair... Paul Wanner’s playstyle is a distinctive, quick, intelligent and nimble one, always thinking 5 steps ahead of the opponent and looking for the most dangerous pass through the opposition defense. Though it is distinctive, however, in the long history of football, it is not quite unique. In fact, there are two players who the Bayern Munich loanee admits particularly influence this style of play:“(Lionel) Messi. He was and is simply the best player. But I would also say Neymar,” Wanner mused, via Sky Sports. “What he did with the ball, his dribbling - that was really great. Especially his time at Barca. I followed him and Messi a lot back then.”The (now former) FC Barcelona duo are not the only influences on his life as a footballer, however. In fact, the former FV Ravensburg youth player comes from a family of footballers: “Well, my father used to play in the second Austrian league. According to what he said, he was pretty good (laughs). I don’t know if that’s true. My grandfather played too, but not as high. But from what I’ve heard, he didn’t do too badly either. Maybe I even learned something from them (laughs).”Though it is up in the air how much the FC Heidenheim player learned from them both, it is clear that his focus on football had to come from somewhere. Did that focus leave any space for a Plan B, if a career in football did not pan out? “No, it was always just about football. I started with football very early. To be honest, I didn’t think about my Plan B. It was just football.”

VfL Bochum 1848 v FC Bayern München - Bundesliga Photo by Mario Hommes/DeFodi Images via Getty Images Apparently, Bayern has received a considerable fine for being just two minutes late for their Bundesliga week 8 match against VfL Bochum. Everyone in their lifetime has had one of those toxic bosses and our middle managers that harps on every little detail in the office. Being one minute late for work, not being back from your lunch break at exactly the designated time, or straying from an already unrealistic project timeline. Most of corporate America has had to put up with that dynamic more time than they would want to admit, but this is apparently something that has affected Bayern Munich a la the DFB from a match against VfL Bochum earlier in the Bundesliga season.Per information from the governing body of German football (Deutscher Fussball Bund), the Rekordmeister had completed their equipment inspection ahead of their Bundesliga match week 8 match at VfL Bochum late (via @iMiaSanMia). The late completion of the equipment inspection led to the match officially kicking off two minutes later than it was supposed to. It kicked off at 10:32AM Eastern Standard Time when it was supposed to have kicked off at 10:30AM. This equated, at the time, to 3:30PM Central European Time or 3:32PM as it was the awkward period that occurs twice per season when North America and Europe are not aligned with their Daylight Savings Time schedules. VfL Bochum 1848 v FC Bayern München - Bundesliga Photo by Dean Mouhtaropoulos/Getty Images As a result of the late kickoff, the DFB decided to give Bayern a fine of €20k, which the club did appeal. The club’s appeal, however, was rejected by the DFB and they will have to pay the fine as a result of just two minutes of tardiness tied to that particular kickoff. Bayern proceeded to win that match 5-0 after the ever so slightly delayed kickoff, having five different goal scorers on the afternoon (Michael Olise, Jamal Musiala, Harry Kane, Leroy Sane and Kingsley Coman). For what it’s worth, this is certainly not the first time Bayern has been fined by the DFB and it likely won’t be the last, though two minutes resulting in €20k does seem rather egregious in the grand scheme of things. It is hard to imagine two minutes affecting local public transportation, hospitality, and infrastructure as well as the Bundesliga — but it seems that if you are on time, you’re late, and if you’re early, you’re on time. 1. FSV Mainz 05 v FC Bayern München - Bundesliga Photo by Alexander Hassenstein/Getty Images Kimmich still believes Bayern has the best squad in the Bundesliga and fully backs that sentiment. Within the span of just two weeks, there have been two more blips on Bayern Munich’s résumé for the season thus far, adding to the disappoint of the Champions League losses to both Aston Villa and Barcelona earlier on. They crashed out of the DFB-Pokal by virtue of a 1- loss to Bayer Leverkusen after Manuel Neuer was sent off in the first half, and more recently, that fell 2-1 at Mainz in the Bundesliga, perhaps really feeling the absence of both Neuer and the injured Harry Kane. Despite the loss to Mainz, Bayern is still four points clear of Leverkusen at the top of the Bundesliga table, and after their 5-1 win over Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League in Gelsenkirchen, they are in 10th the table for that competition — just two spots away from automatic qualification to the knockout stages. While it has been far from perfect in Vincent Kompany’s maiden season as manager of the Rekordmeister, there is no reason to panic or call for his removal, which is a sentiment shared by midfielder Joshua Kimmich. Speaking to Bild (via @iMiaSanMia), Kimmich reflected specifically on the Pokal loss to Leverkusen at the beginning of the month and felt that Bayern was perhaps unlucky to have come out on the losing side of that affair. Even with 10 men, Kimmich felt Bayern played quite well. “When we were eliminated against Leverkusen, it wasn’t a game where you would say that everything was bad, but rather that we have a great team and even with 10 players we are significantly better than the supposedly strongest team in Germany,” he ranted. 1. FSV Mainz 05 v FC Bayern München - Bundesliga Photo by Alexander Hassenstein/Getty Images For what it is worth, his point does sort of offer a zoomed-out view of some of Bayern’s draws and losses this season. Arguably, in the losses to Barcelona, Mainz, and perhaps even Villa, they did not play particularly well, but same cannot necessarily be said for the draws to Eintracht Frankfurt, Borussia Dortmund, Bayer Leverkusen, or as Kimmich alluded to, the Pokal loss to Leverkusen. On the surface, results can certainly be taken out of context, but it is rather more the combination of how Bayern played and the result that matters the most. Even for the Mainz loss, without the unlucky deflections for both of Lee Jae-sung’s goals, the result could have gone in Bayern’s favor or even have been a draw.

FC Shakhtar Donetsk v FC Bayern München - UEFA Champions League 2024/25 League Phase MD6 Photo by Sebastian Widmann - UEFA/UEFA via Getty Images It is safe to say that all of Bayern’s higher ups share the same opinion on the Belgian... Bayern Munich’s quest to redeem a rather poor 2023/24 campaign is well underway. Defined by a lack of trophies and a rather stodgy style of football, it was a desperately disappointing display from the Bavarians. But it also gave the club the burning motivation to do better, starting with the hiring of new head coach Vincent Kompany. Nearing the halfway stage of the season, Kompany’s Bayern is sitting 4 points clear at the top of the Bundesliga table, at the time of writing, contrasting nicely to the previous season, in which the Bavarians never led the table for a single match day.But it is not just this success that Bayern appreciate Kompany for: “Vincent Kompany is exactly the godsend that [former Bayern president] Karl-Heinz [Rummenigge] recently described him as. Vincent has shown us how important passion and meticulousness are. From day one, he has embodied identity and mentality and passed on his clear vision to the team. Vincent has brought the fun back to FC Bayern - on the pitch, in the dressing room and among the fans.”Of course, this fun has not translated to total success. Bayern are currently fighting to make it into the top 8 of the Champions League Swiss League, while the club’s journey in the DFB Pokal, for the upteenth time, ended prematurely. But if Kompany truly has identified with the club and brought fun back to the club, along with success in the Bundesliga, it is important that Bayern stick with the Belgian and give him the backing to elevate the team further.
