Training FC Bayern Munich Photo by Sven Hoppe/picture alliance via Getty Images Someone giving you a nickname means they’re comfortable around you Jamal Musiala was introduced to Bayern Munich’s first team as this little gangly boy plucked from Chelsea FC reserves and was almost immediately christened “Bambi” by Leroy Sané. Although Musiala claims he won’t forgive the former Manchester City winger for the nickname, the familial atmosphere overrode that.“The entire culture of Bayern — Mia san Mia — that’s not just something that we say”, Musiala said (via Player’s Tribune). “It’s hard to explain until you’re in the dressing room, but it’s more like a family atmosphere. I don’t think I would’ve believed it until I was actually in there experiencing it. That first day was so important for me. Not as a footballer, but as a person, honestly.” Soccer: Pele Photo by/picture alliance via Getty Images Pele didn’t like his nickname, but slowly warmed up to it. Musiala “not forgiving” someone for a nickname was similar to Pelé during his youth. The difference was that Pelé would literally fight with anyone who used that name, but both players would eventually embrace their nicknames.Another (indirect) link between the two is that Musiala was teammates with someone who shared Pelé’s surname…and a bit of his nationality. Someone whom he would admire a lot, and possibly derive his skillset from.To be continued.

FC Bayern München v 1. FC Köln - Bundesliga Photo by Stefan Matzke - sampics/Corbis via Getty Images That...might be a hard sell. In 2021, a group of some of the biggest clubs in the world such as Liverpool, Real Madrid and FC Barcelona announced their intention of creating a breakaway league of their own: The Super League. For decades, the Super League was just a theoretical concept the biggest clubs used to intimidate UEFA, used as a bargaining chip in order for UEFA to cater to the bigger teams. And though the Super League initiative failed, it still seems to cater to the richest clubs in the world. So it is not surprising that many theorize that the new format is still a compromise for these clubs. However, former UEFA executive committee member and member of Bayern Munich’s supervisory board Karl-Heinz Rummenigge disagrees:“UEFA never had any intention of creating a balance or a rival event to the Super League,” Rummenigge explains, via @iMiaSanMia. “When I was still on the Executive Committee, we often discussed how we could make the group stage more interesting. A chess pro from Dortmund presented this format to me in Lisbon - and I thought: That could work, that could make things more exciting. The group stage was predictable. Just like the old small FIFA Club World Cup. You knew that the Champions League winner would win. And the worst thing in football is boredom.”This new format is certainly less predictable, with this Champions League season subject to many twists and turns. The change is certainly rooted in greed and the desire to earn more money, that much is undeniable. But perhaps a genuine desire to see a more interesting group stage format also played a role. FC Bayern München v 1. FC Heidenheim 1846 - Bundesliga Photo by Alexander Hassenstein/Getty Images You learn nothing from success. You learn everything from failure. Bayern Munich’s Dayot Upamecano has a well known reputation for mistakes. Time and again, the narrative is that he makes crucial mistakes that sabotage his club. Whether in the Champions League against Manchester City or in the Bundesliga against Bayer Leverkusen, these high profile mistakes seem to follow him. But he keeps picking himself back up and going again. Despite these mistakes, Upamecano is an undroppable part of the starting 11 in his fourth season in Munich. How did this happen?“Last season was a bad season for us - it wasn’t good for me either,” Dayot Upamecano explained, via @iMiaSanMia. “But the most important thing is that we are where we are today. And we have a very, very good coach [in Bayern head coach Vincent Kompany]. I’ve talked a lot with him, he’s helping me and I’m very, very happy with him. We do a lot of video analysis - also with the assistant coach. He helps me a lot and I think he helps the team too. I’m very happy because I can develop further with him. And I don’t think I’m at the end of my development yet. The most important thing is that when you make a mistake, you have to fix it and focus quickly. That’s what I did. The coach said he was happy - and that’s very good for me and the whole team.”Is it too cliché to suggest Upamecano had to make those mistakes for his personal development? While it may be hyperbole to suggest all the mistakes were necessary, one never learns from success. It has taken mistake after mistake for the Frenchman to improve and become the kind of center back Kompany, a legendary former center back himself, trusts so totally. Now he needs to show that he can finally deliver those top class performances the entire season long.Looking to listen to the latest chatter on Bayern Munich’s contract news? What about why Vincent Kompany might be making his first real mistake as Bayern Munich’s head coach? FC Shakhtar Donetsk v FC Bayern München - UEFA Champions League 2024/25 League Phase MD6 Photo by Sebastian El-Saqqa - firo sportphoto/Getty Images Waiting game or oblivious to the issues? The time to say goodbye to Manuel Neuer is fast approaching and Bayern Munich need another goalkeeper to fill in for him. Sven Ulreich and Daniel Peretz, despite being capable understudies to Neuer, still lack in some areas that Neuer exceeded in. Despite this, Bayern sporting director Max Eberl says the club will have to stick with who they have for now:No [when asked if a GK will be signed in the winter]. In Daniel Peretz we have an outstanding backup. He played really well in the Pokal, and against Heidenheim as well. Today he has the Champions League stage to prove himself there. He made outstanding saves in the international matches against Belgium and France. We have no concerns about that for now. Manu will come back. He’s still one of the best goalkeepers in the world. That’s why we have no need in the position.– Amazon Prime Germany as captured by Twitter account @iMiaSanMiaHaving faith in your players is commendable, but you can’t ignore the signs that he needs to be replaced.

UEFA European Under-17 Championship 2026 Round 1 Draw Photo by Kristian Skeie - UEFA/UEFA via Getty Images FIFA continued its trend of selecting new and exotic options. In an elaborate ceremony in his home country of Switzerland, FIFA president Gianni Infantino confirmed the host countries for the upcoming 2030 and 2034 World Cup venues. Like the 2026 tournament hosted by USA, Mexico, and Canada, FIFA will utilize another tri-country World Cup in 2030. However, FIFA will spread the tournament across three continents. Portugal and Spain will be the primary hosts in Europe, while Morocco in Africa and Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay will be used for additional matches. Despite competitive and logistical concerns regarding travel between the various continents, FIFA decided to move forward. The 2034 World Cup was awarded to Saudi Arabia, a highly controversial choice. The 2022 World Cup in Qatar was met with similar issues, including human rights, infrastructure, working conditions, and a general lack of soccer culture. Upon the announcement, social media was lit ablaze with backlash, especially the typical complaint about bribery and corruption within FIFA.Introducing the hosts for the next two editions of the @FIFAWorldCup!

Germany v Italy - Quarter Final: UEFA Euro 2016 Photo by Laurence Griffiths/Getty Images Just starting off with a bang, eh? After failing time and time again in the Nations League, former Bayern Munich coach Julian Nagelsmann’s arrival as head coach has turned things around for Germany and the 2014 World Cup winners find themselves in the knockout rounds of the Nations League for the very first time. It may be a dubious honor in a competition with little history to some, but Germany’s first knockout round match will be against an opponent Germany has plenty of history against, not much of it good. @iMiaSanMia captures the result: Official: The first leg of the Nations League quarterfinal between Italy and Germany will be played in Milan’s San Siro.Italy, of course, infamously retained an unbeaten record against Germany until the 2016 European Championship, when Jonas Hector converted the final penalty in a dramatic penalty shootout win for the Germans. Germany will be hoping to build off their one win against Italy in the coming Nations League clash.Looking to listen to the latest chatter on Bayern Munich’s contract news? FC Viktoria Plzen v Manchester United - UEFA Europa League 2024/25 League Phase MD6 Photo by Ash Donelon/Manchester United via Getty Images Bayern Munich might have to re-think its summer plans... Madrid, Bayern to spar over Rashford? (The Hard Tackle)Bayern Munich’s offseason plans could be hitting a wall given the rumors of Florian Wirtz’s potential contract extension with Bayer Leverkusen. Could Marcus Rashford enter the picture for the Bavarians? Per at least one report, Bayern Munich will battle with Real Madrid for the Manchester United attacker: Manchester United striker Marcus Rashford has been linked with a move away from the Premier League club of late. Marcus Rashford is reportedly on the radar of Barcelona. According to Fichajes, the English international is valued at £40 million, and it will be interesting to see where he ends up. Meanwhile, Barcelona will face stiff competition from Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain.Manchester United could be open to selling the player in the coming months, and it remains to be seen whether Bayern Munich and Barcelona come forward with an official offer to sign him. They have the resources to pay the £40 million asking price for the England international, and he could prove to be a quality addition for them. He is well-settled in the Premier League, and he is a proven performer at the highest level.Signing him for £40 million could prove to be a major bargain in the long run. The player is at the peak of his powers right now, and he could be tempted to join either of the two clubs. They could help him push for major trophies in the coming seasons. The Englishman could be an asset for most top clubs, and it will be interesting to see if Bayern Munich and Barcelona can help him regain his sharpness. Meanwhile, Manchester United are already lacking in quality when it comes to their attacking unit, and it will be interesting to see if they can replace Rashford adequately. This does not feel like it would be a massive upgrade over the current Bayern Munich wingers, but if the club becomes hellbent on change, there could be a sentiment to make this kind of move. Kolo Muani, Škriniar on the block? (@FabrizioRomano)Paris Saint-Germain could be looking to offload Randal Kolo Muani and Milan Škriniar: ⚠️ Randal Kolo-Muani can leave PSG in January, same situation as Milan Škriniar.

Both have been left out of PSG squad and it was Luis Enrique’s decision, as @FabriceHawkins reports.

Let’s talk about all of that and more on the latest edition of the Bavarian Podcast Works Show. 1. FSV Mainz 05 v FC Bayern München - Bundesliga Photo by Alex Grimm/Getty Images Wanner has an up and down week across two competitions It was another strange week for Bayern Munich loanees. After holding Wanner scoreless last week, Bayern faced another loanee this week that contributed to their downfall, as Armindo Sieb assisted the winning goal for Mainz against Bayern. Alexander Nübel only made one save across two matches this week but won both by an aggregate of 8-2. Paul Wanner was benched after 30 minutes in the Conference League, but then still started and scored against on Nübel and Stuttgart. FC Bayern MunichThere are nine players on loan from the first team.Germany – BundesligaThere are five players on loan in the German Bundesliga: Alexander Nübel, Franz Krätzig, Paul Wanner, Armindo Sieb, and Gabriel Vidovic.Alexander Nübel – VfB StuttgartNübel started for Stuttgart against Young Boys in the Champions League. By halftime, he had conceded a goal, recorded zero saves, and the match was level at 1-1. In the second half, he did not record another save, nor did he concede another goal, but Stuttgart ran away to a 5-1 win. Nübel was back in the starting lineup against Heidenheim and fellow loanee, Wanner on the road Sunday. This time he also conceded one goal, but also recorded one save. This was enough to keep his team to win 3-1.Franz Krätzig – VfB Stuttgart Krätzig was on the bench for the Champions league victory, but did not make it onto the pitch. He was not in the squad for the Bundesliga win.Stuttgart will host St Pauli on Saturday.Paul Wanner – 1.FC Heidenheim Wanner started for Heidenheim against Başakşehir in Turkey in the Conference League, but that was about it. He completed 92% of his passes, but he was credited with an error that led to a goal — which was a bit harsh, seeing as he was dispossessed at midfield before the ball was dribbled to the 18-yard box where a pass was put, and then directed into goal. Wanner had no shots, nor chances created and was subbed out in the 30th minute with his team down 2-0. There were no injuries nor red cards that forced the substitution. Both teams traded goals in the second half and Heidenheim fell 3-1.Wanner’s status as a starter was not affected by the Conference league debacle. He started against Nübel and got a goal against his fellow loanee. The goal came after a great run from midfield, when his teammate found him 15 yards away the box. He shot from long distance into the top right corner. Nübel got a hand on it, but it still found the back of the net. Wanner played the full 90 minutes, but could not help his team find any more goals and they lost 3-1. 1. FSV Mainz 05Sieb was on the bench against his parent club to start, but came on just 15 minutes in due to an injury to Mainz’ captain, Burkhardt. Though Sieb recorded two shots and a chance created for his teammates to shoot, his greatest contribution to the match came on an assist in the second goal. He took a backheel from a teammate out on the wing and dribbled towards the baseline before firing it in towards Lee, who doubled the lead and finished his brace. Sieb was pulled off in the 77th minute, still up 2-0. As we know Sané pulled one back to make it interesting at the end, but Mainz gave Bayern their first loss, 2-1.
