FC Shakhtar Donetsk v FC Bayern München - UEFA Champions League 2024/25 League Phase MD6 Photo by Joris Verwijst/BSR Agency/Getty Images Laimer’s goal spurred Bayern on to score four more unanswered goals to go on and win 5-1. Despite a scare early on with going 1-0 down to Shakhtar Donetsk inside of the first five minutes at the Veltins Arena in Gelsenkirchen, Bayern Munich went on to earn a 5-1 victory in what was technically an away match for the Rekordmeister despite its proximity to Bavaria. Brazilian winger Kevin Santos broke free down the left flank in the fifth minute to score the shock early goal on a wonderfully worked counterattack, but Konrad Laimer’s equalizer in the 11th minute sparked what would mostly be one way traffic for the remainder of the evening.Thomas Müller struck just before the stroke of halftime, seeing that Bayern went into the break with a 2-1 lead, which was no less than they deserved for all the dominance they showed throughout the first half. A second half brace from Michael Olise and a strike from Jamal Musiala got the job done for Vincent Kompany’s side, easing past the early scare to have provisionally positioned themselves in a direct qualification spot for the Champions League knockout stages.Laimer was the unlikely hero that sparked the Bayern comeback, and after the match he explained how he felt Bayern slowly grew into the match, with Kevin’s early goal almost galvanizing them into action. “We executed our chances better towards the end. We were still a bit untidy to begin with and weren’t as aggressive. After that we got into the game more and deserved to win by the margin we did. All in all it was a very convincing win for us. It’s always fun when you score goals. It was very important. We keep going, we’re on a good track, we have two games left and we want to win both. We want to finish among the top eight,” he explained after the final whistle (via FCBayern.com). Shakhtar Donetsk v Bayern Munchen - UEFA Champions League Photo by Marcel Bonte/Soccrates/Getty Images While Bayern might not need to wins from their last two matches in the competition, winning both would all but guarantee a place in the knockout stages and avoiding having to go through the playoff process in February of next year. With the new format this season, lots of movement can happen on any given Champions League match day, so wins against both Feyenoord and Slovan Bratislava is what Bayern will be hoping for — both of which come after the winter break. FC Shakhtar Donetsk v FC Bayern München - UEFA Champions League 2024/25 League Phase MD6 Photo by Christof Koepsel/Getty Images Old man’s still got it. What does the future bring for Bayern Munich and Thomas Müller? How about we enjoy the present first, says Bayern coach Vincent Kompany. The 35-year-old led the line for the Bavarians on Tuesday against Shakhtar Donetsk, with Harry Kane out injured, and made two decisive goal contributions — one a score, the other a save — that he celebrated equally.Good old Thomas.“Let’s talk about these 90 minutes,” Kompany said after the match in response to questions about Müller’s expiring contract (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “His goal was a quality he’s always had in his career, to be in the right place at the right time. His energy, passion, leadership, it’s very important for us to have a mix of experienced and young players. He has a very important role on and off the pitch. But I won’t talk about the future now.”One gets the sense that Müller does not have quite the stamina or verve that he used to. But watching him on the field, or celebrating his teammates from the sidelines, it is clear that the energy and the fire is not gone yet. FC Shakhtar Donetsk v FC Bayern München - UEFA Champions League 2024/25 League Phase MD6 Photo by Rene Nijhuis/MB Media/Getty Images The Bayern Munich coach is pushing the right buttons... Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany has seen his team play a dominant style many times of late, but too often the squad has not realized its attacking potential. Against Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League, things really fell into place. “We stayed calm after their early goal. We were already the better side in the first half, even though it was not our best half. We got better later on and it’s good how the game went today. Overall, we were dominant. We had more chances than the opponent. But of course, we can always do better,” Kompany said (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). With two games left before the Winterpause, Kompany will be looking for his boys to continue this stellar run of play. FBL-ENG-PR-CHELSEA-WIGAN Photo by CARL DE SOUZA/AFP via Getty Images This isn’t a game! When Musiala moved to Chelsea FC’s academy, the same season their men’s team did, uh...something to Bayern Munich, he remembered how he shared a pitch with the first team during training.“When we got to Chelsea, it was incredible just to be around all the legends — just to be within 100 meters of them, just to see them across the car park”, Musiala reminisced (via Players’ Tribune). “This was like 2012, so we were seeing Lampard, Drogba, Čech, Terry…. And they’re real. That’s actually Didier Drogba. Like, from FIFA. They were on a completely different side of the facility from us kids, but one day they came to train over on the youth pitch for some reason.Being the fanboy he was, he made a beeline for the players and went to the German on the team: André Schürrle. One by one, he began collecting selfies with the rest of the team. With John Terry, Musiala’s dad lent a hand for that picture. His parents would happily do some of the easy stuff like that, but that wasn’t always the case.To be continued.

Shakhtar Donetsk - FC Bayern Munich Photo by David Inderlied/picture alliance via Getty Images A second Champions League brace from Olise helped Bayern ease past Shakhtar Donetsk. Bayern Munich has found itself some winger in Michael Olise. The Crystal Palace transfer is starting off life in Munich fast. After Bayern’s 5-1 win over Shakhtar Donetsk on Tuesday, he already has two Champions League braces for the Bavarians. The Frenchman brings an undeniable energy to the Bayern attack and on this occasion, it was a matter of continuing to plug away until the results came.“We conceded early but reacted quickly and scored the equalizer. Then we carried on with our game plan and it was rewarded. We’re happy and we’ll continue taking it one game at a time,” said Olise in typical understated fashion (as captured by FCBayern.com) after the match.Olise was rewarded too, with official MOTM honors for a comprehensive performance punctuated by two filthy good goals. His penalty, cool as you like. And his maze-ing run through the whole of the Shakhtar defense, well: how fitting that it was punctuated with another 1-on-1 staredown with the keeper:— SCOUTED (@scoutedftbl.bsky.social) 2024-12-10T22:09:58.400ZLooking for more thoughts and analysis on Bayern Munich’s big 5-1 win over Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League? FC Bayern München v Paris Saint-Germain - UEFA Champions League 2024/25 League Phase MD5 Photo by Marco Steinbrenner/DeFodi Images via Getty Images Kompany doesn’t exactly agree with the claim made by Kroos in the context it was made. In a recent episode of the Einfach mal Luppen podcast, former Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, and German national team midfielder Toni Kroos made a remark about how he felt Bayern was far too reliant on Jamal Musiala, especially against the stronger opponents they face. To be exact, he said, “I think it’s extreme how dependent Bayern is on him. Especially against good opponents. You can be dependent on a player. But it’s surprising how dependent they are on Jamal to even create chances.” (via Magenta TV’s Victor Catalina). His words could easily be taken out of content, but Vincent Kompany offered a reply of his own when he was asked about the claim from Kroos. “Weren’t Real Madrid dependent on [Cristiano] Ronaldo? Weren’t Barcelona dependent on [Lionel] Messi? Jamal has so much quality, so it’s normal that a lot of things are being spoken about him. He’s definitely a special player and of course he’s important for us. But Michael Olise, for example, also has a lot of goals and assists. Of course there aren’t that many players with 15 goals, but the goals were shared between them,” he rationalized to the press (via @iMiaSanMia). On the surface, Kompany’s retort is entirely valid, given that Kroos played a large portion of his career at Real Madrid, where Ronaldo scored the overwhelming majority of the goals. After he left for Juventus and then for Manchester United and Al-Nassr, Karim Benzema took the reigns of the primary goal scorer for the club, and one could argue that now that reign has been handed over to Vinicius Jr, Jude Bellingham and Kylian Mbappe. Real Madrid v FC Bayern Muenchen: Semi-final Second Leg - UEFA Champions League 2023/24 It is incredibly difficult to understate Musiala’s value for both Bayern and Germany, but he certainly would not want to take on less responsibility just because a former player feels there is too much reliance on him. He might very well have already tallied a total of 10 goals and 4 assists from 18 appearances across all competitions and he has also scored twice and assist thrice for Germany in UEFA Nations League play from the last set of international breaks, but that is perhaps more of a call for other Bayern players needing to be more productive rather than a question of why the club is so reliant on him. With having players like Musiala and Harry Kane in the squad, it is always going to be difficult to not give off the perception that there is a bit of a reliance on them with how productive they are in the attacking third. There is reason why the world’s legends are a step above the greats in the game, and from a philosophical standpoint, wouldn’t that always give off at least a slight perception of reliance? Someone needs to stand up and be counted when the chips are stacked against you. Looking to keep up with everything happening at Bayern munich on — and off — the field? FC Bayern München v Bayer 04 Leverkusen - DFB Cup: Round of 16 Photo by Marco Steinbrenner/DeFodi Images via Getty Images Bayern Munich vs. Shakhtar Donetsk...are you ready? Pep dreaming of massive Moose, Kimmich swoop in 2025 (CityXtra)Right now, it looks like Bayern Munich is going to ink Joshua Kimmich and Jamal Musiala to contract extensions that will keep them in Bavaria for a lot longer.Until that happens, though, we are going to see stories like this one below, which indicates that Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola is going to attempt to bring both players to the Premier League:Pep Guardiola maintains a ‘good relationship’ with one of Bayern Munich’s poster players as Manchester City target a midfield revamp in the summer of 2025.The Premier League champions are believed to be eyeing a major rebuild of their entire squad ahead of what could be Pep Guardiola’s final two years at the Etihad Stadium following a recent contract extension through to the summer of 2027.And according to the information of Sky Germany’s Kerry Hau, City will look to strengthen their midfield during the next summer transfer window following Pep Guardiola’s two-year extension, and could potentially replace both Ilkay Gündogan and Kevin De Bruyne.t is further revealed that Guardiola himself ‘loves’ Jamal Musiala, but such a deal for the Bayern Munich attacking midfielder would be ‘very unlikely’ with the Germany international leaning towards a contract extension at the Allianz Arena. As such, the report claims that a potential move for Joshua Kimmich is ‘more realistic’, and should no agreement with Bayern Munich be reached over an extended stay, a Premier League or La Liga switch would be an option.Interestingly, and in a detail that could perhaps play a big role in the player’s future, the report reveals that Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola and Kimmich are maintaining contact and still have a ‘good relationship’.Bayern Munich is still the clear frontrunner for both players — and it is not even close. If there was one coach, who could even attempt to sway the duo, it is Guardiola. That said, it is very unlikely that either player leaves for England at this stage.Ten Hag could keep Raum in Leipzig (ESPN)This is putting the cart before the horse given that Marco Rose is still the head honcho with RB Leipzig, but Erik ten Hag — should he be hired by the club — would seek to keep David Raum rather than let him leave for Manchester United: Former manager Erik ten Hag could get in the way of Manchester United’s attempts to sign RB Leipzig left-back David Raum in January, reports The Sun. After a poor start to the season, Marco Rose’s position as Die Roten Bullen boss has come into question, and Ten Hag has been installed as the early favourite to take over at the Red Bull Arena. If Ten Hag does get the Leipzig job, the outlet says that the Dutchman would be loathe to lose the 26-year-old Germany international.Per kicker (as captured by Get German Football News), Rose’s future is in jeopardy and a decision is expected on it after next week. Considering that Bayern Munich plays RB Leipzig on Friday December 20th, the Bavarians could play a key role in Rose’s future. That cannot feel reassuring...Bavarian Podcast Works — Preview Show: Shakhtar Donetsk vs. Bayern Munich (Bavarian Football Works)Bayern Munich is looking to continue its winning form against Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League after a very odd 4-2 win over Heidenheim over the weekend. Shakhtar Donetsk - FC Bayern Munich Photo by David Inderlied/picture alliance via Getty Images The narrative has turned around since Bayern’s October shellacking at the hands of FC Barcelona. Bayern Munich executive board member for sport Max Eberl is delighted with the team’s Champions League win Tuesday night over Shakhtar Donetsk.Eberl is hard at work securing the future of the Bayern squad — via contract extensions and the next transfer window’s crop of incomings — but took some time to appreciate Bayern’s Champions League turnaround.“We fell 1-0 behind but the team reacted well,” Eberl remarked after the match (captured via FCBayern.com). “We had a touch of luck when Donetsk had the chance to go 2-1 in front, but after that we regained control of the game, got the goal for 2-1 and showed the dominance we wanted in the second half. “In the end, the margin of victory was deserved. I liked the team’s reaction, especially how they adapted to the game. In the second half, we felt that desire to score goals again, which for me is the crucial thing. In terms of the table, we’ve now put ourselves into a position where we can finish in the top eight with two wins.”Between veterans Manuel Neuer and Thomas Müller and younger or in-prime stars like Alphonso Davies, Joshua Kimmich, and Leroy Sané, the Bavarians have a lot of expiring contracts to handle this year. Eberl will have much to think about.Looking for more thoughts and analysis on Bayern Munich’s big 5-1 win over Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League? FC Bayern München v TSG Hoffenheim - Bundesliga Photo by Sebastian Widmann/Getty Images Der Kaiser’s memory lives on... Franz Beckenbauer is one of the most successful footballers of his generation. He was known for his stint with Bayern Munich and earned everything there was to win in football. Der Kaiser departed for the pearly gates at the start of this year, and German football officials will make sure his name is remembered by the new generation:In cooperation between the DFB and the DFL, the German Super Cup is set to be renamed ‘the Franz Beckenbauer Cup’. An agreement has been reached in principle. The remaining formalities are to be clarified soon. The first edition of the renamed cup will take place on August 16, 2025.– Bild as captured by Twitter account @iMiaSanMiaEarly efforts to immortalize Beckenbauer’s legacy include the motion to rename the Südkurve at Bayern’s Allianz Arena in his honor, but nothing concrete came from that. Instead, the first official trophy of the Bundesliga season will be named after him.Looking for more thoughts and analysis on Bayern Munich’s big 5-1 win over Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League? Bologna FC 1909 v FC Shakhtar Donetsk - UEFA Champions League 2024/25 League Phase MD1 Photo by Alessandro Sabattini/Getty Images Shakhtar Donetsk stood toe-to-toe with Bayern Munich (unlike some other clubs)... Shakhtar Donetsk coach Marino Pušić knew his team had a massive task in front of it as it prepared for Bayern Munich. While the Ukrainian side played with great heart and courage, Shakhtar Donetsk was ultimately worn down and forced into mistakes by a relentless Bayern Munich squad for a 5-1 loss in the Champions League. Afterward, Pušić said his players left it all out on the pitch. “We have young players without much experience but they played with courage. Obviously they’re going to make mistakes. I’m proud of their performance. It’s not easy to compete against the best teams in the world. I like to use young players – this is sometimes the price you pay. That’s how they develop and they’ll be able to help the team even more in the next match. We let the match slip at the end of the first half, but I can’t complain about how my players went about it,” said Pušić (via FCBayern.com). “They gave everything. Mistakes are punished very quickly at this level. When you concede five goals, that’s too many, but we played against an excellent team. We have an attacking mindset and we’re not going to change that even for these opponents.”Shakhtar Donetsk should feel good about its effort and likely learned a bit about itself from its mistakes. FC Bayern München v 1. FC Köln - Bundesliga Photo by Stefan Matzke - sampics/Corbis via Getty Images El Cashico Three Bayern Munich players, Jamal Musiala, Joshua Kimmich, and Alphonso Davies, all have contracts that run out soon. The club is currently in the process of negotiating deals with all three players. As per Sky Sports Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg (@Plettigoal), here is how things stand:Jamal Musiala, Joshua Kimmich and Alphonso Davies all have written contract offers from Bayern on the table. Leroy Sané still doesn’t have an offer, which is causing some irritation. Nevertheless, talks with Sané are being held. A decision is not expected before spring Joshua Kimmich: the tendency is towards an extension. Decision expected in January/February Jamal Musiala: very likely to extend his contract for around €25m/year. Decision also expected early 2025Alphonso Davies: advanced talks, numbers have been discussed, some agreed, some still need more talks. Not a done deal yet, but Bayern expect him to renewThe most surprising one there is Davies, who was for a time set on a move to another club (expected to be Real Madrid). But no one’s gonna want to divulge anything. The latest Bavarian Podcast Works Show has dropped! FC Dynamo Kyiv vs FC Shakhtar Donetsk - Ukrainian Premier League 2024-2025 Photo by Yurii Yuriev/Global Images Ukraine via Getty Images Shakhtar Donetsk is as ready as it ever will be to face Bayern Munich... For Shakhtar Donetsk coach Marino Pušić, Bayern Munich is one of those rare teams that he does not have to think about whether his team will be “up” for the match. “You don’t need to motivate your players for such matches. When you face one of the best clubs in the world, that in itself is motivation. Of course, I will tell them a couple of things about how to play this game and what to do, but I think everyone is already highly motivated when playing in the Champions League, especially against such opponents,” said Pušić (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “Therefore, the match itself is already motivation. I believe in my team. Everything good starts with believing in it. In my opinion, we played many matches in the Champions League – both in the previous format and in this one – where we showed qualities and a high level.“We are looking forward to the game and I’m very confident in my players, especially in their character and in the way they want to show themselves. We have to be at 100% tomorrow. We have to be perfect in everything, playing against such opponents, and everyone on the pitch has to be fantastic in all aspects. As I said, this is a great match, a great challenge for us. We are a team that has nothing to lose, we can only win in these matches. And we, of course, will try to do that.”Say what you will, but that is a hell of a good attitude to take into this Champions League contest. FC Bayern München v 1. FC Heidenheim 1846 - Bundesliga Photo by Harry Langer/DeFodi Images via Getty Images For a loan this would be a great spot, but VfB Stuttgart might want to fully acquire Paul Wanner... According to a report from Sky Sport journalist Dennis Bayer (as captured by @iMiaSanMia), VfB Stuttgart have a strong interest in Bayern Munich phenom Paul Wanner, who is on loan at FC Heidenheim. While no serious talks have taken place yet, Stuttgart already has an idea of how it could work: Stuttgart are interested in Paul Wanner as a potential replacement for Enzo Millot, who could leave the club in the summer via a €18-20m release clause. VfB are impressed with Wanner’s qualities and potential, his name was discussed internally. Still early stages, no concrete talks yet.The Wanner situation is the proverbial elephant in the room for Bayern Munich. Would another loan make sense? Should be come back and compete for a spot next season? Should he be sold? Bayern Munich has options and Wanner has been patient. At some point, though, the situation will hit a breaking point for one side or the other. The latest Bavarian Podcast Works Show has dropped!
