📖 An application of the theory of ecofeminism in EFL classes
✍️ Abdelhakim El Moene
By drawing on ecofeminist philosophy, this paper argues that education should challenge gender ideologies and address environmental problems as interconnected forms of oppression. Educational policy in patriarchal societies is at high rates tinted with male dominance in decision-making, policy discourse, and administrative management. A recurrent idea in the literature is that gender ideologies shape our worldviews, language, and social structures and determine the organization of social and educational institutions. This paper sketches a preliminary application of the theory of ecofeminism in classroom settings, specifically English as a Foreign Language (EFL henceforth) education, to stress the role of educators in creating equal opportunities for sustainable learning and life-preserving values as part of a social transformation that has its roots in education and educational policy and that extends to the environment. This application is based on an ecofeminist pedagogy as a promising approach to promoting social and ecological justice, and to resisting all forms of domination. In proposing to address social inequities by adhering to ecofeminist theory, this paper supports the view that social change is necessary for ecological survival.

📖 Ignored, yet important: An ecolinguistic analysis of oral narratives in the Western Grassfields of Cameroon
✍️ Modest Nuel C. Amb
Contemporary ecological challenges have resulted in an upsurge in research geared towards providing solutions to the crisis. According to previous research in the area, there is an urgent need for a conscious and contentious reaction to the ecological crisis which threatens human existence. The aim of this paper is to unearth the solutions to the global ecological crisis, through an ecolinguistic analysis of indigenous oral narratives. Using Stibbe’s (2015) Ecolinguistics as a framework of analysis, we investigated the language used by various indigenous groups in talking about the environment. The data consisted of six indigenous oral narratives on topics related to the environment. The results reveal that despite the realisation that these narratives and the languages through which they are expressed are apparently ignored, they remain very important, especially in contemporary society. An analysis of the narratives reveals various ecological philosophies which are important in resolving the ecological crisis. They also show various worldviews which are necessary in the fight against environmental crises. It is realised that through the use of oral narratives, indigenous people, consciously or unconsciously, engage in fighting against ecological catastrophes like climate change, depletion of species, pollution, destruction of farmlands through the use of chemicals, and extinction of protected species.

📖 An analysis of climate change discourses in the UK parliament (2006–2018)
✍️ Sarah Kirk-Browne
The political implications of addressing the climate emergency have come into an ever sharper focus over the past decade. As pressure mounts for a reassessment of environmental strategy, this paper examines the United Kingdom (UK) parliament’s position through an analysis of the language used in the debating chamber between 2006 and 2018. The study used corpus analysis and a narrative approach to consider how politicians’ choice of words and topics reveals underlying discourses and how these have shifted over time. Three major discourses related to climate change framed the study: gradualism, scepticism and catastrophism (Urry, 2015). The findings complemented research highlighting the dominance of the economic framing in UK politics in the mid-2000s (Willis, 2017). However, it also suggested that apparent consensus on this issue has grown less stable over time, and that a scepticism discourse has seen some resurgence. The findings highlighted that climate change in the UK parliament was viewed as an abstract challenge or threat, often considered solely on economic grounds, largely ignoring social impact and non-humans.

📖 Representing nonhuman animals as equals: An ecolinguistic analysis of vegan campaigns
✍️ Alena Zhdanava; Surinderpal Kaur; Kumaran Rajandran
Ecolinguistics studies the interactions between language and ecology. It investigates whether the stories created by language are destructive or beneficial to all the constituents of the environment. In search of positive stories for our environment, this article focuses on vegan campaigns which generally bring awareness about veganism that, in turn, advocates protection of nonhuman animals and abstention from their exploitation. Nonhuman animals are part of the ecosystem and the way they are portrayed in language may determine the relationship between human and nonhuman animals. As vegan campaigns refer to nonhuman animals as sentient living beings, it is important to analyze whether the language and image of these campaigns articulate their purposes and create beneficial stories for nonhuman species. This article explores the stories regarding nonhuman animals in 27 posters of the vegan campaign “Go Vegan World” and examines how these stories are shaped and whether they are aligned with vegan values. The study is approached from an ecolinguistic perspective with a focus on multimodality where the language was analyzed through van Leeuwen’s Social Actor and Social Action theory, and the image was analyzed with Kress and van Leeuwen’s Grammar of Visual Design. Further, the analysis involves the ecosophy defined as a personal ecological philosophy of relationships between human and nonhuman animals, plants, and the physical environment. The findings suggest that the campaign language and image shape three stories: salience where nonhuman animals are individuals with their own feelings and lives; conviction that nonhuman animals matter as much as humans; ideology where biocentrism is promoted. By comparing these stories with the article’s ecosophy, an ecolinguistic analysis showed that they are largely beneficial in representing nonhuman animals as sentient living beings who are equal to humans.
