Canfor transfers forest tenure in B.C. to 2 First Nations

Forestry giant Canfor has sold its logging license for B.C.'s Mackenzie Timber Supply Area, which covers about 64,000 square kilometers, to the McLeod Lake Indian Band and the Tsay Keh Dene Nation. Each First Nation will receive a share of the license, allowing them to harvest over 430,000 cubic meters of timber annually. This sale is seen as a significant step towards self-determination for the nations and is expected to boost local forestry operations, including a biomass energy project by the Tsay Keh Dene Nation. Canfor's sale, including the Mackenzie Sawmill, is valued at approximately $69 million. The District of Mackenzie’s mayor praised the transfer as a major advancement for the local forestry industry.

Asian sunscreens are all the rage, so why can't you buy them in Canada?

Nancy Le, 25, has been using facial sunscreens since she was a teenager. But unlike people who buy sunscreen from stores, the Vancouver nursing student is one of many who use online retailers.

That's because the sunscreen she uses, which is made in Asia, contains ingredients that aren't approved by Health Canada.

"The other sunscreens that I tend to like that are available here in Canada, they tend to be a little bit more expensive. So I find even drugstore brands ... it's going to be at least $30," she said.

These days, she uses a Korean-based brand that works as a moisturizer and sunscreen.

"When it's on sale, it costs me $10 a bottle," Le said. "And with sunscreen, you are recommended to reapply it every two hours, especially if you're in the sun. And with the amount that you're using, it can really add up."

She's not alone.

Asian sunscreens have become all the rage online — particularly among those interested in skin care — but Health Canada has not approved them, leaving consumers looking for those products to purchase them online or overseas.

How the NDP's deal with the Liberals died

Despite Liberal House Leader Karina Gould expressing confidence in the continuation of the supply-and-confidence agreement with the NDP until June 2025, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh announced its termination just a week later. The abrupt decision, which surprised the Liberals, could lead to the government being toppled before fall 2025 and adds uncertainty to the upcoming parliamentary session.

According to unnamed NDP and Liberal sources, the NDP had been planning their exit from the agreement for about a month before Singh's announcement. Concerns among NDP members included the negative impact of being associated with the Liberal brand, which was lagging behind the Conservatives in polls, and a belief that the NDP had maximized its gains from the deal. NDP House Leader Peter Julian confirmed that the caucus felt they had reached the limit of what the Liberals were willing to offer.

Canadian men's soccer team beats U.S. in away match for 1st time in 67 years

The Canadian men ended 67 years of failure against the U.S. on American soil with an impressive 2-1 win in a soccer friendly Saturday. Jacob Shaffelburg and Jonathan David scored for the 40th-ranked Canadians, who led 1-0 after a dominant first half. Substitute Luca de la Torre replied for the 16th-ranked Americans, who offered more resistance after the break.

Canada's last victory over the Americans on U.S. soil was in July 1957, a 3-2 World Cup qualifying victory in St. Louis. The Canadian men had gone winless in 23 consecutive games against the U.S. in America since then, but outclassed their opposition Saturday.

Jasper wildfire complex now under control: Parks Canada

The wildfire that burned a third of the buildings in Jasper, Alta., to the ground is now under control, Parks Canada officials announced Saturday.

"That means that the wildfire has received sufficient suppression action to ensure no further spread outside the defined perimeter of the fire," Landon Shepherd, a Parks Canada incident commander, told reporters.

The wildfire perimeter is an estimated 278 kilometres, while the area is estimated to be at 32,722 hectares.

Smoke and flames will still likely be visible inside the fire's perimeter into early winter, Parks Canada says.

"This announcement of getting us to being under control in under seven weeks from the fire starting is a significant achievement," Shepherd said.

"It wouldn't have been possible without the deliberate and joint efforts under our unified command with the Municipality of Jasper."

Ottawa police secretly wiretapped 5 Black officers, lawsuit alleges

The Ottawa police secretly wiretapped five of its Somali officers and their family members for months, never laid any charges, and refuses to tell them why, alleges a $2.5-million lawsuit filed by the officers. In the suit against the Ottawa Police Services Board, filed last year and reported now for the first time exclusively by CBC, the officers allege they were subjected to racial discrimination.

The officers, some of whom have loose family connections to alleged criminals, say their relationships led to the illegal search and seizure of their most private communications. The officers allege the investigation left a lingering target on their backs, keeping them under a veil of suspicion by other officers.

Norval Morrisseau's legacy 'irrevocably damaged' due to art fraud, says judge giving man 5 years in prison

The man who oversaw the creation of thousands of forged artworks in Thunder Bay, Ont., falsely attributed to Anishinaabe artist Norval Morrisseau faces a five-year penitentiary sentence.

David John Voss pleaded guilty on June 4 to counts of forgery and uttering forged documents for operating an art fraud ring out of Thunder Bay between 1996 and 2019.

Investigators have called the case Canada's largest art fraud investigation, resulting in more than 1,000 paintings seized.

The sentence for Voss, 52, was handed down on Thursday by Superior Court Justice Bonnie Warkentin.

"The purpose of the creation of these fake paintings was to gain an economic benefit, but in the course of creating and selling these fakes, the legacy of Norval Morrisseau has been irrevocably damaged," Warkentin told the court.

"His spirituality has been undermined and tarnished, so today, we have one small opportunity to address this wrong."

RBC customers outraged over partial refund after unauthorized withdrawals

A B.C. couple is expressing anger over what they say is a banking error at one of Canada’s largest banks. Jason and Susan Lyne say money was being withdrawn monthly from a joint RBC account they share with their daughter without their authorization.

The Lynes say their frustration with RBC started when their daughter noticed payments to Telus exiting their joint account. They say those payments had no association with them or their daughter. “It was basically $130 per time coming out that was not her payment. She’s never had a Telus account,” Susan said.

Liberal MP says her constituents are 'very adamant' Justin Trudeau needs to go

Quebec Liberal MP Alexandra Mendes publicly stated that many of her constituents believe Prime Minister Justin Trudeau should step down after nearly nine years in office. Speaking to Radio-Canada, Mendes revealed that numerous constituents have expressed dissatisfaction with Trudeau's leadership, urging that he not lead the party into the next election. Although Mendes personally respects Trudeau, she acknowledged that the feedback from her constituents suggests a leadership change could be beneficial for the party.

Mendes, a long-time Liberal who has served both as an MP and in a senior party role, expressed sadness over the criticism of Trudeau but emphasized that the party needs to better communicate its accomplishments if Trudeau remains in office. She noted that despite the government's achievements, such as the Canada Child Benefit and various social programs, many Canadians are unaware of these successes. Mendes is not confident about the party's chances in the next general election unless communication improves.

She plans to convey her constituents' concerns to Trudeau and the cabinet at the upcoming Liberal caucus meeting. Some MPs had previously requested such a meeting, but scheduling conflicts delayed it.

Protesters get 6½-year sentences for roles in border blockade at Coutts, Alta.

Two men have been sentenced to 6½ years in prison for their roles in the blockade of the Canada-U.S. border crossing at Coutts, Alta.

Anthony Olienick showed no emotion while Chris Carbert appeared glum and folded his arms, as the sentence was read out in Court of King's Bench on Monday.

Neither are to serve their full sentences, as Justice David Labrenz gave them nearly four years credit for time they have already spent in custody.

Olienick and Carbert were convicted last month of public mischief over $5,000 and possessing a firearm dangerous to the public peace. Olienick was also convicted of possessing a pipe bomb.

A jury found them not guilty of the most serious charge they faced — conspiracy to murder police officers at the blockade.

The blockade halted traffic at the border crossing for two weeks in 2022 in a protest of COVID-19 rules and vaccine mandates.

Edmonton police commission seeks to replace city councillor members with civilians

City council could lose its two seats on the Edmonton police commission if councillors accept a change the commission argues would lead to better governance. In a report going to council Tuesday, the police commission recommends removing the two existing councillor seats and replacing them with members of the public "at a time established by council."

The report outlines disadvantages to having city councillors sit on the 12-member commission. The police commission oversees the Edmonton Police Service, allocating funds provided by council and setting policies for effective policing.

One of the military's simplest procurement projects is being tied down by red tape

Despite facing heavy pressure to ramp up military spending, the Department of National Defence (DND) has slow-rolled one of the least complex of its vehicle replacement programs.

The light utility vehicle program has been on the books for several years. Its purpose is to update the military's fleet of two-decade-old Afghan war-era Mercedes G-Wagons and civilian-grade utility vehicles, such as pickups and SUVs.

Under the original plan, the terms for the purchase of more than 1,600 vehicles were supposed to be set by this year, putting the program on the road toward a signed contract.

But DND recently told CBC News that it has decided to split the program into two phases — beginning with the acquisition next year of commercial off-the-shelf vehicles, and leaving the purchase of lightly armoured vehicles to later years.

More significantly, the estimated cost of the program has risen to somewhere between $750 million and $1 billion, from an initial projection of $499 million.

Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs Grand Chief Cathy Merrick dies after collapsing outside Winnipeg court

Cathy Merrick, the first female grand chief of the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs and a prominent voice on many First Nations issues, has died after collapsing outside the law courts building in Winnipeg on Friday.

Merrick was speaking to media about a court case when she collapsed. She was given CPR before being rushed away in an ambulance.

Winnipeg Mayor Scott Gillingham said in a news release Friday afternoon he was deeply saddened to learn of Merrick's passing.

Merrick, the former chief of Pimicikamak Cree Nation (also known as Cross Lake) in northern Manitoba, was elected as Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs grand chief in October 2022, becoming the first woman to lead the advocacy group in its nearly 35-year history. She was re-elected to the post in July 2024.

On Friday, an emotional Merrick collapsed shortly after speaking to media about what she called "a gross miscarriage of justice" following the acquittal of a Manitoba corrections officer charged in the 2021 death of William Ahmo, a First Nations man who was an inmate at the Headingley Correctional Centre.
