Great white shark found dead on Haida Gwaii
A great white shark has been found dead on the coast of Haida Gwaii in northern B.C..
It was discovered by Mike Miles, who says he saw it while boating just south of Tlell, B.C., off Haida Gwaii's east coast.
"I thought I was seeing a young orca, then thought it was a beaked whale," he told CBC News via text message. "Then, a great white shark! Cool and a bit sad."
He reported it to the federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO), which has confirmed the species, saying it was a male measuring about 13.5 feet or four metres in length. They also found a seal in its gut, "a common prey for this species," according to spokesperson Athina Vazeos.
Vazeos said samples have been collected for research purposes, including cause of death, and beyond that, they are "letting nature take its course" on what happens to the body.

Toronto mom acquitted in daughter's death sues police, city
A Toronto mother who was convicted and later acquitted of murder in the death of her disabled daughter after four years in prison has filed a multimillion dollar lawsuit, alleging police were negligent in their investigation and caused her to be falsely imprisoned.
Cindy Ali and her husband Allan are seeking more than $10 million in damages, according to a statement of claim filed at the Ontario Superior Court of Justice in August.
The lawsuit, first reported on by the Toronto Star, names as defendants the Toronto Police Service Board, the City of Toronto, the lead investigator in Ali's teenage daughter's death and a firefighter who testified at both her trials.
The claim argues the defendants were negligent and failed to meet a duty of care they owed the couple following the February 2011 death of their 16-year-old daughter Cynara, who had cerebral palsy and was unable to walk, talk or feed herself.
The allegations haven't been proven in court and none of the defendants have filed a statement of defence. The city and police board both declined to comment while the matter is before the courts.

Aging fleet, e-bus challenges push Ottawa back to diesel
OC Transpo staff are seriously considering purchasing more diesel buses — something the city had never intended to do again — as it gives up on plans for high-capacity electric buses and struggles to maintain its aging conventional fleet.
The capital's public transit agency is set to provide an update on Thursday for its e-bus procurement. It includes information about the latest round of delays and the city's decision to give up on purchasing any of the longer, 18-metre (60-foot) electric buses.

B.C. party leaders trade jabs at televised debate
In the lead-up to the B.C. provincial election on October 19, party leaders David Eby (NDP), Sonia Furstenau (Green Party), and John Rustad (Conservative) engaged in a heated televised debate, their first major face-off of the campaign. Eby emphasized the need for continued government support, proposing measures like tax cuts and affordable childcare. Rustad defended his controversial views on education, climate change, and COVID-19, asserting that his party focuses on cost savings for families by cutting the carbon tax.
Furstenau criticized both Eby and Rustad for offering either a continuation of the current government or a return to past policies, highlighting the need for change after years of leadership from both parties. Throughout the debate, Eby labeled Rustad a conspiracy theorist, while Rustad accused Eby of weak leadership contributing to unaffordability and insecurity in the province. Furstenau pointed out both leaders' alignments on privatizing healthcare and subsidizing the fossil fuel industry. Advance voting begins on October 10, with further dates leading up to election day.

Quebec coroner orders public inquiry into Old Montreal fire that killed mother, daughter
Quebec's chief coroner has ordered a public inquiry into the deaths of two people who died in a major fire in Old Montreal last week.
Coroner Reno Bernier ordered the inquiry at the request of Public Security Minister François Bonnardel.
Léonor Geraudie, 43, and her seven-year-old daughter Vérane Reynaud-Geraudie, who were French nationals, died inside a three-storey, 100-year-old building on Notre-Dame Street when a suspicious fire broke out early Friday morning.
The building housed a restaurant on the main floor and a hostel upstairs.
This is the second coroner's inquiry into a suspicious fire at an Old Montreal building in just over a year and a half. In March 2023, a fire in a building on Place D'Youville killed seven people. Both buildings at the heart of the inquiries are owned by Émile-Haim Benamor.

Canadian doctors warned to be on the lookout for scurvy
Scurvy is a disease that likely conjures up images of sickly sailors from hundreds of years ago, but doctors in Canada are being warned to look out for the condition now, as a result of growing food insecurity.
A report published Monday in the Canadian Medical Association Journal (CMAJ) details the case study of a 65-year-old woman diagnosed with scurvy at a Toronto hospital last year. The authors say the case points to the need for physicians to consider the possibility of scurvy, particularly among patients at higher risk for nutrient deficiencies, including people with low socioeconomic status and isolated older adults.

New footage of deadly Old Montreal fire shows masked person leaving the scene
As police continue to investigate Friday's deadly fire in Old Montreal, more security footage showing its immediate aftermath has surfaced.
Friday's five-alarm fire in a 100-year-old three storey building at the corner of Notre-Dame and Bonsecours streets killed two people. On Saturday, Montreal police confirmed the victims were 43-year-old Léonor Geraudie and her seven-year-old daughter Vérane Reynaud-Geraudie, who were French nationals.
The building housed a restaurant on the main floor and a hostel upstairs.
Since the deadly fire, Radio-Canada has obtained two videos from a security camera overlooking the front of the restaurant. The first one showed a person breaking into the building through its main floor, minutes before the fire broke out.

Updated COVID-19 vaccines roll out at pharmacies
Health officials are urging those at higher risk for COVID-19 complications to get updated vaccines as new Health Canada-approved doses from Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech arrive at pharmacies. These updated mRNA vaccines target the Omicron subvariant KP.2, which is currently dominant in Canada.
Dr. Don Sheppard from the Public Health Agency of Canada emphasizes that these vaccines can significantly reduce the risk of severe disease, particularly for individuals over 65, the immunocompromised, and those with limited access to healthcare, including First Nations, Inuit, and Métis people.
While prior vaccinations and infections offer some protection, the ongoing contagiousness of the virus and waning immunity mean all adults should consider the updated vaccine. Vaccine uptake has been low, partly due to messaging challenges and misinformation. The updated vaccines will be available to everyone aged six months and older, regardless of their vaccination history. National COVID-19 indicators remain stable but elevated compared to the spring.

The pharmacare bill central to a political agreement between the Liberals and NDP received royal assent, becoming law. This legislation, which passed the Senate without amendments, will guide the development of a future national pharmacare plan and enable the government to make agreements with provinces and territories to include diabetes and birth-control medications in public health coverage. British Columbia has already initiated a partnership with Ottawa for the program, and Health Minister Mark Holland aims to involve all provinces and territories by next spring.

Parents say Quebec standing in the way of daughter's recovery with transfer to French-speaking hospital
A family from Quebec's Lower North Shore is concerned that their 10-year-old daughter, McKenna Jones Griffin, is not receiving adequate care for her recovery from a traumatic brain injury due to language barriers. After a serious off-road vehicle accident, McKenna was airlifted to the Janeway Children's Health and Rehabilitation Centre in Newfoundland, where she stabilized.
Her family, who only speaks English, was advised by her neurosurgeon that the Montreal Children's Hospital is better suited for her rehabilitation. However, Quebec's Health Ministry decided to transfer her to the CHU de Québec-Université Laval, stating it meets her needs and offers English services. The family argues this decision undermines McKenna's right to receive care in English and is pushing to have her transferred to Montreal. Despite the province's reassurances, they are determined to continue advocating for her preferred treatment.

Identifying battlegrounds tough as B.C. election race heats up
Analysts are struggling to predict the October 19 British Columbia election due to significant changes in the political landscape. Key factors include the addition of six new ridings and the emergence of the B.C. Conservatives as the main challenger to the governing B.C. NDP, following the decline of the B.C. United party.
Former Vancouver Mayor Kennedy Stewart and ex-B.C. Liberal chief of staff Mike McDonald highlight that these changes create uncertainty, particularly in battleground areas that swung to the NDP in 2020. McDonald points out that a tighter popular vote could put those NDP seats at risk, especially in the Fraser Valley.
Stewart notes that traditionally safe NDP urban ridings may also become competitive due to recent policy shifts that could lower enthusiasm among the party's base. Overall, both analysts emphasize the unpredictability of the election given these dynamics.

String of bike, scooter crashes has advocates sounding the alarm
A recent spate of road incidents that have left Ottawa cyclists and other commuters injured — or dead, in two cases — has advocates of safe and active transportation concerned. The five incidents span from Sept. 24 to this past Friday and took place at different times of day and in disparate corners of the city.
They coincide with the start of fall and, as some councillors note, the fact that more people are using the roads since the federal government upped its employees' weekly in-office attendance requirement to three days.
